Jack White, Ben Coad bowl Yorkshire to 10-wicket victory over Essex

Matthew Revis and Ben Coad turned the tide for Yorkshire

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay02-Jul-2025Yorkshire 459 (Revis 150, Coad 89, Lyth 84) and 41 for 0 (Bean 18*, Lyth 15*) beat Essex 368 (Westley 107, Elgar 97, Thain 50) and 131 (Cox 55, White 4-37, Coad 3-33) by 10 wicketsYorkshire completed a notable victory over fellow Rothesay County Championship strugglers Essex after tea on day four at York to leapfrog them in the Division One table at the end of the ninth round.Essex are now second-bottom in the table, three points behind their hosts, who chased a nominal target of 41 to win by 10 wickets and secure their second win of the summer.Essex’s third defeat came as they were bowled out for 131 in their second innings, which had started with them 91 behind. They will be mightily frustrated at letting things slip on day three when Yorkshire were 273 for 8 in reply to a first-innings 368.While Matthew Revis and Ben Coad were the ones who turned the tide for Yorkshire, new-ball seamer Jack White supplemented their good work with an excellent four for 37 from 20.1 overs in the second innings and seven wickets in the match.All-rounder Revis hit a first-innings 150 and struck once with the ball today, removing England fringe batter Jordan Cox for 55. Seamer Coad hit a career best 89 and completed an excellent 3 for 33 from 17 overs.Yorkshire struck three times during a 55-minute morning session which was bookended by rain. Coad and new-ball partner White did the damage as Essex slipped to 48 for six in 28 overs. The visitors had started on 33 for 3.Nightwatcher Simon Harmer sliced a low catch to Abdullah Shafique diving forwards at gully, handing Coad a third wicket of the innings, before White trapped Matt Critchley lbw pushing forwards and sent Charlie Allison’s off-stump cartwheeling.Critchley was one of the protagonists in denying Yorkshire a fourth-day victory at Chelmsford in May with a rearguard 75. Here, he failed to score as the visitors came under increasing pressure.Play was due to restart following an early lunch at 1.25pm, though more rain briefly delayed things as the players scuttled back in when ready to go.When play did get underway, with a minimum of 68 overs remaining and Essex 48 for 6, Cox and Michael Pepper frustrated the hosts by sharing 59 to take their county into the lead.Wicketkeeper-batter Pepper had combined with Critchley in that aforementioned May fixture to bat through the vast majority of the first two sessions of day four, contributing a dogged 68.And similar determination was required in the Minster City for an Essex side who, when all was said and done, were hurt badly by the absence of bowling spearheads Sam Cook (England Test duty) and Jamie Porter (paternity leave). It was somewhat of a surprise to see Cox drive expansively against Revis’s seam, getting an under-edge behind shortly after reaching his fifty off 89 balls. That left Essex at 107 for 7, leading by 16.And it was bordering on shock when Pepper edged behind a similarly aggressive cut against White almost seven overs later, leaving Essex at 114 for 8 with a lead of 23.Dom Bess’s off-spin bowled Noah Thain shortly afterwards before White wrapped things up by getting Khaleel Ahmed caught at second slip by Adam Lyth, signalling tea. After the break, Yorkshire dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s on a 20-point haul to jump up to eighth in the table.Openers Lyth and Fin Bean, the latter on his home ground, reached the target in nine overs. Lyth finished with 15 and Bean 18.

Ibrox chiefs eye "amazing" Championship gem as first signing for new Rangers manager

As they continue their search for a new manager, Rangers have reportedly set their sights on bringing the next boss’ first new face to Ibrox when the transfer window swings open.

Latest on Rangers' manager search

The main focus for Rangers right now is finding their next manager and if recent reports are anything to go by, that’s likely to be a returning Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool legend has reportedly held “positive” initial talks with those at Ibrox and will be discussing further details about a potential return for the first time since leaving for Aston Villa in 2021.

The 49ers have turned towards the last manager to win the Scottish Premiership with the Gers following the failure of their Russell Martin appointment. The summer appointment lasted just 123 days after winning just once in seven league games.

To say that it’s not the start that the new owners would have hoped for is an understatement, but they’ve now got the chance to start afresh if Gerrard makes his return.

That’s not to say talks will be simple, though. Recent reports have indicated that Gerrard wants more control over transfers and a budget to operate with when the January transfer window arrives if he is to join Rangers again.

The 49ers already welcomed more than 10 fresh faces in the summer, with many yet to make their mark, but may need to spend once again in January to let Gerrard mark his stamp on the side. What that could also see is a return for summer targets that Kevin Thelwell missed out on, including one Championship star.

Rangers targeting Pierce Charles

As reported by Ibrox News, Rangers chiefs are now targeting a move to sign Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday in 2026 after missing out on the shot-stopper’s signature in the summer. The Gers reportedly saw a £1m offer turned down by Sheffield Wednesday, despite the fact that money would have been enough for owner Dejphon Chansiri to pay players and staff on time.

Now, having maintained an interest in the goalkeeper, Thelwell could reignite Rangers’ interest in 2026. Gerrard could yet play an unexpected role in any deal too, after initial reports suggested that Charles was not keen to join the Gers if ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl was handed the vacant managerial role.

ByTom Cunningham Oct 9, 2025

With Gerrard the likeliest to arrive at this stage and Charles’ former goalkeeper coach Sal Bibbo keen to secure a reunion at Ibrox, the 20-year-old is still one to keep an eye on.

Described as an “amazing” prospect by Newcastle United star Anthony Elanga, Charles could bring Jack Butland’s tenure as Rangers’ No.1 to an end and provide the Gers’ next manager with an instant boost next year. Whether it’s Gerrard or another option who benefits from that boost is the big question.

'Irreplaceable!' – Jamie Redknapp lauds new Bukayo Saka attribute on display after Arsenal forced to grind out tough win at Fulham

Jamie Redknapp hailed Bukayo Saka after the winger inspired Arsenal to a gritty 1-0 win over Fulham that took them back to the top of the Premier League. On a day when Mikel Arteta's men struggled for fluency, Saka's leadership and composure shone through, underlining once again why the England star is so crucial to the Gunners' title ambitions.

Saka excels in Arsenal's gritty Fulham win

Arsenal had to work hard to overcome a resilient Fulham side at Craven Cottage, with Leandro Trossard's second-half strike ultimately proving decisive. The Gunners laboured through a sluggish first half in which Fulham created the better chances, forcing David Raya into two important saves. But after the interval, Arsenal improved their tempo, and Saka's pinpoint corner created the breakthrough moment that sealed the win.

Fulham briefly thought they had a lifeline when a VAR review prompted a penalty awarded for a challnge on Saka to be overturned by referee Anthony Taylor. But the result lifted Arsenal back above Manchester City, maintaining their excellent away form with just one defeat in their last 18 Premier League away games. Although Saka didn't get on the scoresheet, his performance – full of drive and determination – set the tone for Arsenal's resilience. Arteta's side once again showcased their defensive solidity, as Fulham failed to register a single shot on target.

The Gunners have now conceded only three goals in eight league matches this season, highlighting their growing maturity. For Saka, who captained the side in Martin Odegaard's absence, the afternoon further cemented his role as Arsenal’s heartbeat in moments of adversity.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportNo one else can fill Saka's boots

Redknapp was full of praise for Saka's all-round influence, telling : "Don't get me wrong, of course, they've got players who can play on that side but he is the man. And that's what I'm talking about when I talk about being a leader today."

The pundit: "He's not a Tony Adams as a captain, but he took the game by the scruff of the neck when the team was struggling and they didn't quite have that flow, and he grew into the game."

Redknapp concluded: "As the game went on, he just started to win his individual battle. He was fabulous. I feel that if they can keep him fit then that's going to be a massive key for them. Obviously, there are other players – [William] Saliba, Gabriel – but Saka just feels irreplaceable."

Saka's Premier League season so far

Saka's numbers this season highlight exactly why Redknapp labelled him "irreplaceable". So far, he has three goals across all competitions and ranks among Arsenal's top players for chance creation and expected assists (xAG). He's averaged over 2.5 key passes per game in the Premier League and continues to be the most fouled Arsenal player, proof of how central he is to the team's attack.

Against Fulham, Saka led the team in completed dribbles and final-third entries, dictating the rhythm of Arsenal's play even when others struggled. His assist for Trossard's winner was his fourth goal contribution of the season, marking his direct involvement in more than 30 per cent of Arsenal's league goals at this stage of the campaign.

Those figures, paired with his relentless work rate, show a player who routinely influences matches. Having missed a brief spell earlier in the campaign through a hamstring issue, after a much longer absence last season, Saka's return to action has been seamless. His sharpness, creativity, and tactical intelligence have made him indispensable on the right flank.

Saka crucial for Arsenal on multiple fronts

With Arsenal back on top of the Premier League table, the challenge now is to sustain momentum heading into a congested schedule. Saka's fitness will be a major focus, particularly given his importance to both Arsenal and the England national team.

Arteta has already spoken about managing the player's workload carefully to avoid burnout. The Gunners' next test will come in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid, where Saka's ability could prove vital as Arsenal seek to progress from the league phase.

Can Parag's Royals rein in sixy Sunrisers?

Big Picture: Samson to start as batter

In a video uploaded by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday, Heinrich Klaasen, batting in the nets, belts every ball he faces out of sight. Travis Head, his equally big-hitting team-mate, keeps swinging his his head around to try and follow the ball into the distance. Leading into IPL 2025, it was a throwback to Klaasen, Head and Abhishek Sharma’s merciless six-hitting last season. The three combined to smash 112 sixes out of SRH’s 178 in 2024 – the most by any side in any IPL season.Related

  • 'We have to let go of the past' – Samson keen to work out strengths of new-look Royals

  • Vettori: 'Whatever ground we go to, our batting is going to be aggressive'

  • Parag to lead Royals for first three games, Samson to play as batter

  • IPL to allow one ball change on demand to counter dew

  • Stats – All the records that can be broken in IPL 2025

Ahead of IPL 2025, SRH retained the explosive trio with no questions asked, alongside their captain Pat Cummins and emerging allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. SRH now begin their new season by facing the team they had knocked out in last year’s Qualifier 2.Rajasthan Royals (RR), like their opposition on Sunday, have retained their core group of Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag (alongside Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel and Sandeep Sharma). Samson has been RR’s go-to batter – he has 300-plus runs for them in seven successive seasons – but he will begin this season as an Impact Player, giving up keeping and captaining duties as he recovers from an injured finger. Parag will be lead RR in their first three games, a clear sign that at only 23 he’s already part of their leadership group.Hetmyer is RR’s only overseas batting option, and that leaves them with a potentially all-Indian top five of Jaiswal, Samson, Parag, Nitish Rana and Jurel. With Hetmyer to follow, the batting still looks formidable, but RR are short on Indian bowling options. They will hope Jofra Archer (who is back with RR after five years), new imports Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana and Sandeep can challenge SRH’s ultra-aggressive approach.

New loyalties

Last year, both Hasaranga and Fazalhaq Farooqi were with SRH. But while Hasaranga pulled out due to injury, Farooqi didn’t get a game. Now they are both with RR, and have been in great form since the last IPL. While Hasaranga has 64 wickets at an average of 16.15 in all T20s since then, Farooqi has 62 at 15.17. Farooqi’s run included being the joint-highest wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup 2024. So, this time, SRH could get to see what they missed last season.Adam Zampa, meanwhile, withdrew late from the IPL last year after being retained by RR. This time, he’s at SRH, and heads into the IPL on the back of 62 wickets in 39 T20s since the last IPL. SRH have some consolation after all.

Team news & likely XIIs

Joining the SRH batting party this time is Abhinav Manohar. He was the second-highest run-getter in last year’s Maharaja T20 Trophy, the Karnataka-based T20 league, where he slammed 52 sixes, 22 higher than the next batter on the list. As for SRH’s fourth overseas player, they have options in Zampa, Kamindu Mendis, Wiaan Mulder and Eshan Malinga. They could opt for Mendis if they choose to lengthen their batting line-up, or Zampa if they want to include a second frontline spinner alongside Rahul Chahar.Sunrisers Hyderabad (probable): 1 Travis Head, 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Ishan Kishan (wk), 4 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 Aniket Verma, 7 Abhinav Manohar, 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Rahul Chahar, 11 Mohammed Shami, 12 Adam ZampaIn Samson’s absence from the field, Jurel will likely that over the wicketkeeping gloves. Depending on the pitch and the conditions, RR might have to choose between Theekshana and Farooqi. They have only Hasaranga in the allrounder bracket in a squad otherwise full of specialist batters and bowlers.Rajasthan Royals (probable): 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Sanju Samson, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Riyan Parag (capt), 5 Dhruv Jurel (wk), 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Shubham Dubey/Akash Madhwal, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Maheesh Theekshana/Fazalhaq Farooqi, 11 Sandeep Sharma, 12 Tushar Deshpande

Big question

Two quicks who have had injury issues will be in action in Hyderabad on Sunday.Cummins is set to return after missing the Tests in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy due to the birth of his second child and an ongoing ankle issue. He will be leading SRH for the second season running.Archer, on the other hand, had an injury-free 2024 for England after chronic elbow and back problems. But given his history of injuries, and England’s big Test series against India and Australia to follow later this year, he might have to manage his workload a bit.

In the spotlight: Nitish Reddy and Yashasvi Jaiswal

One of IPL 2024’s big finds was Nitish Kumar Reddy. His captain Cummins called him “awesome”, and Reddy, a rare pace-bowling allrounder in India, so impressed the national team’s management that he was handed a T20I later in the year and then flew to Australia to face Cummins’ side in Test cricket. A Test century in Melbourne brought tears to his father’s eyes, and he will be hoping to keep making him proud this IPL.Yashasvi Jaiswal took the IPL by storm in 2023, when he cracked its fastest fifty – off 13 balls. He tallied 625 runs at a strike rate of 163.61, including a century. The next year, although he scored 435 runs, that number still seemed to have fallen short of expectations. Jaiswal was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad just after that, but didn’t get a game. He has remained on the fringes of India’s T20I side, and with immense competition from Abhishek and Samson, he will need an impactful IPL to change that.3:14

Cricinformed – SRH’s six-hitters set for a new IPL high?

Key stats

  • The SRH vs RR rivalry is nowhere near as popular as CSK vs RCB, or CSK vs MI. But the cricket, of late at least, has been tight and exciting; SRH lead the faceoff against RR 11-9, with two of the last three games between them being high-scoring, last-ball thrillers.
  • Thirty-two batters faced at least 200 balls last season, of which Abhishek (204.21) and Head (191.55) led charts for strike rate. Klaasen was seventh with 171.07.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar was a major part of SRH’s line-up from 2014 to 2024. Sunday will be the first time since October 2021 that SRH will be playing a match without him in the side.

Pitch and conditions

The average run rate in Hyderabad last year was 10.54, the second-highest among the 13 grounds. SRH’s ultra-aggressive attitude with the bat – they even chased down 166 against LSG within ten overs – took the pitch out of the equation.Hyderabad is expected to be hot on Sunday afternoon, with hardly any chance of rain. So expect big scores again, and the ball flying to all parts of the ground.

Quotes

“I think it’s a pragmatic answer to a difficult problem, [dew] doesn’t affect every ground. Don’t think we experience dew here [in Hyderabad] at all, Chennai and Mumbai [are affected with dew] in particular. It’s a nice solution for everyone to come up with, I think it’ll work really well.”

Next three fixtures

SRH host Lucknow Super Giants four days after hosting RR. They then have back-to-back away games against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders.Three days after playing SRH, RR host Kolkata Knight Riders, and three days later they have a home game against Chennai Super Kings – both in Guwahati. With a five-day gap after that, RR fly to Mullanpur to play Punjab Kings.

VIDEO: Kylian Mbappe risks the wrath of PSG fans as Real Madrid star is spotted going wild in the stands after brother Ethan scored late equalising goal for Lille & hit famous celebration against former club

Kylian Mbappe has risked incurring the wrath of Paris Saint-Germain supporters after celebrating wildly when seeing a goal scored against them. That effort was, however, recorded by the Real Madrid superstar’s brother, Ethan, which can be forgiven. Mbappe was among those in the stands as PSG were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by Lille – with his iconic celebration being broken out against the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

Mbappe's iconic celebration broken out by brother

Mbappe junior, who is 18 years of age, scored in the 85th minute to earn Lille a share of the points in a 1-1 draw. He displayed impressive poise when picking up possession just inside the penalty area, shifting the ball onto his left foot and firing into the bottom corner. Kylian was caught on camera celebrating in the stands.

Ethan, aware that his sibling was in the crowd, took to striking Kylian’s iconic folded arms pose after hitting the net. He now has two goals to his name this season, having opened his account at senior level against Toulouse in September.

Celtic could unlock Idah's full potential with swoop for "exciting" £5m gem

It is fair to say that the opening game of the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season did not go exactly how reigning champions Celtic wanted it to.

The Hoops had to battle hard to break the deadlock against a stubborn St Mirren side that sat in and defended well in a low block for the majority of the game.

However, substitute Luke McCowan was able to finally break through by firing in a shot from the edge of the box that deflected into the bottom corner in the 87th minute.

They were a fortunate deflection away from dropping two points on the opening day of the season, though, which Brendan Rodgers will not have been pleased with.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

The summer transfer window is still open for a few more weeks and there could be further incoming business for the Hoops, who appear to need attacking reinforcements.

One player whose future in the starting XI remains uncertain, due to potential transfer activity, is Adam Idah, after his dismal showing against St Mirren.

Why Adam Idah's starting spot is in danger

The slow nature of Celtic’s recruitment work this summer has provided the Ireland international with a big opportunity to show the manager that he has what it takes to be the main number nine this season.

Unfortunately, though, he failed to step up against St Mirren on Sunday, as the former Norwich City attacker put in an incredibly wasteful showing, as you can see in the graphic below.

It is fair to say that the Irish number nine has not done enough to prove that he has the clinical finishing to be a reliable goalscorer for the Hoops this season, as further evidenced by his 19 ‘big chances’ missed in 19 Premiership starts last season.

This is why Idah’s starting spot in the team is in danger because he needs to show that he can be ruthless with the chances that come his way in games.

However, as you can see in the table above, the Ireland international also has a lot of creative qualities that sometimes go under the radar because of his finishing struggles and a few touches that go awry.

Idah is not perfect, that is obvious, but he is also not useless for Rodgers. His creative statistics from the 2024/25 league season suggest that the Hoops need to surround him with clinical finishers who can make the most of the chances that he creates.

The former Canaries star still needs to improve his finishing and show that he can be relied upon by Rodgers in front of goal, but the manager can do his bit to help the forward unlock his true potential by bringing in goalscoring midfielders around him.

This is why the Northern Irish boss should be pushing the board to get a deal done for Go Ahead Eagles star Jakob Breum before the end of the summer transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Celtic have had multiple offers turned down for the Danish midfielder, who is valued at £5m by the Eredivisie side, and they should stump up the cash required to bring him to Parkhead to unlock Idah’s creative potential.

Why Celtic should sign Jakob Breum

One of the many reasons why the Hoops should pay up to bring Breum to Glasgow before September’s transfer deadline is that he is a versatile star who could be used in a host of different positions by Rodgers.

The Denmark U21 international has started 11 matches or more as a central midfielder, a right winger, an attacking midfielder, and as a left winger in his club career to date, which means that he can play across the frontline behind Idah or another striker.

At the age of 21, Breum would also come in as a young player with the potential to grow and develop throughout his time in Glasgow. This means that he would be a signing for the here and now as well as for the future, given his scope to improve further.

His performances for Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie during the 2024/25 season also suggest that he has the quality to come in as an ideal signing for Idah.

Breum, who was nominated for the young player of the season award in the Netherlands, is a ruthless finisher who has the potential to make the most of the Irish forward’s creativity.

As you can see in the table above, the Danish forward ranked incredibly highly in a host of goalscoring metrics in the Dutch top-flight, as he outperformed his xG with both the quality of his shots and his goal tally.

These statistics suggest that the 21-year-old star, who was described as an “exciting” talent by Sport Republic video scout RDF Tactics, would be the perfect attacking midfielder to unlock Idah’s potential as a creator.

As aforementioned, the Irish striker was one of the most creative forwards in the Premiership last season, but was not rewarded with the assists that he deserved. Breum is a player who could finish off the chances that Idah creates, based on his form last term.

Along with being able to provide quality as a finisher, the £5m-rated star also ranked highly for his own creative output, and could create high-quality opportunities for Idah, to help him overcome his finishing woes.

Celtic could repeat Hooper masterclass by signing "extraordinary" £7m star

Celtic could find their next Gary Hooper with a swoop to sign this target from the lower league in England.

Overall, Celtic should be pushing to sign the Go Ahead Eagles star because he has the potential to be an attacking signing that could complement Idah’s style of play, potentially helping the Irishman to keep his place in the XI.

Their new Gordon: Everton set to hold talks over signing big-money PL star

Everton are entering a critical summer window, one that could define their ambitions under David Moyes and the Friedkin Group.

With creativity in short supply, the Merseyside club are looking for value in unexpected places.

Everton manager DavidMoyesreacts

Despite finishing the season with some of the league’s most resolute defending, their blunt edge going forward left much to be desired.

That’s why they’re targeting a player of rare pedigree, someone who can unlock defences, drag teams up the pitch single-handedly, and take the burden off the rest of the team.

It’s the same logic that saw them put their faith in a young Anthony Gordon, before his big-money and somewhat acrimonious departure to Newcastle.

Anthony Gordon

Now, they could be about to bring in someone Gordon himself has long looked up to.

Everton in talks to sign big-money player

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Everton are set to hold further talks with Manchester City over a sensational loan deal for Jack Grealish.

Manchester City's Jack Grealish

With the England international struggling for game time under Pep Guardiola last season, the Toffees see an opportunity to revitalise both their squad and the player.

Discussions have already begun over a potential temporary switch, with Everton making it clear they cannot accommodate Grealish’s current wages unless City cover a significant portion.

A permanent move has not been ruled out, but it would depend on the player agreeing to a steep salary reduction.

England manager, Thomas Tuchel, has already made it clear to Grealish that regular minutes will be essential if he wants to make England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Left out of City’s Club World Cup squad and featuring in just 20 Premier League matches last season, the message is clear: find football or fall further from contention.

For Everton, it would be a high-profile coup. Ashley Cole once described Grealish as having “that Eden Hazard quality. When you talk about little magicians who can win you games, he’s one of them.”

While Jamie Redknapp claimed he was “the real deal. He’s got everything if we play him in the right positions.”

Why Grealish could be Everton's next Gordon

While Grealish may be approaching 30 and Gordon only just 24, the stylistic parallels between the two are striking, particularly when comparing their best seasons.

According to data from FBref, the City outcast averaged 6.27 progressive carries per 90 minutes, compared to Gordon’s 4.30 in 2023/24.

Both players thrived as ball-carriers, routinely dragging their team forward. However, in terms of creative output, the margins are tighter than expected. Grealish posted 4.55 shot-creating actions per 90, with Gordon just behind on 4.45.

The former Villa man had the superior pass completion rate (84.1% vs Gordon’s 76.1%) and slightly more progressive passes (4.39 to 3.15 per 90), but Gordon’s energy without the ball stands out.

The Newcastle winger completed more tackles (1.71 vs 1.10) and blocks (0.84 vs 0.75) per 90, showcasing his suitability for Eddie Howe’s intense defensive structure.

One clear gap lies in the volume of involvement. Grealish averaged 42 carries and 33.9 touches in the attacking third per 90 minutes, both significantly higher than Gordon’s 29.8 carries and 22.8 touches.

But, context matters: Grealish’s City role demanded high possession involvement, whereas Gordon often thrived in a transitional system at Newcastle.

The most important takeaway is their shared strength as vertical threats. Both players can resist pressure, draw fouls, and win territory with the ball at their feet.

In Grealish, Everton would be gaining a player who can link play in tight areas, relieve pressure under a high press, and hold onto the ball in the final third.

Crucially, they’d also be securing a player with something to prove.

A steep drop in market value, from £86m in October 2021 to £24m today as per Transfermarkt, reflects both his limited minutes and age.

For Everton, this may be an opportunity to borrow a £100m-calibre player at a fraction of the price.

He could be the ideal short-term antidote to their creative drought and a mentor for the club’s emerging wide options.

With Gordon now thriving at Newcastle, this would be a compelling full-circle moment. Grealish, too, once broke through as the crown jewel of a relegation-threatened club.

A loan to Everton could see him return to those roots: carrying a team on his shoulders, delighting fans with flair, and reigniting his England ambitions.

For Everton, it’s a gamble – but one worth taking.

£22m player very keen to join Chelsea, talks once held, he's a top target

Chelsea are set for a short pre-season after winning the Club World Cup final, with just five weeks separating their 3-0 win over PSG in New Jersey and their first Premier League game of 2025/2026 against Crystal Palace.

They have scheduled just two pre-season matches as a result of their CWC triumph, needing to fit a holiday in for both players and staff after what was a successful but very long campaign.

Chelsea will take on both Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan on August 8 and August 10 respectively, but as things stand, these are the only friendlies they’ll play before facing Palace in the top flight a week later.

It remains to be seen how Enzo Maresca’s side will fare given their minimal preparation, but the Italian did get a chance to try out new tactics during their CWC campaign in the US.

He also managed to give some of his major summer signings a run-out. Joao Pedro seriously impressed at the tournament in particular, scoring three goals in three CWC games, including a brace in their semi-final against Fluminense and a goal in the final against PSG.

Despite Chelsea’s need to sell players and balance out the squad due to a pact with UEFA (Kaveh Solhekol), Maresca could still add more fresh faces before their new season kicks off against Palace.

This will be dependent on departures (Simon Phillips), but perhaps Djordje Petrovic’s £25 million move to Bournemouth has freed up space for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan to come in.

The France number one was a serious target for Chelsea earlier in the window, and they tried to complete a deal for him before competing in the CWC. However, Milan and Chelsea failed to find an agreement, despite Maignan’s eagerness to join.

Despite reports to the contrary, Chelsea could go back in for Maignan before deadline day on September 1, with Robert Sanchez also told he’s free to find a new club away from Stamford Bridge (Graeme Bailey).

Mike Maignan very keen to join Chelsea, he's a top target

TEAMtalk have another update on the situation this week, claiming Maignan remains a top target for Chelsea.

The 30-year-old is also “enthusiastic” about joining Maresca’s side this summer, even if negotiations previously failed, with the main roadblock being Milan’s £22 million asking price – a figure deemed too high by Chelsea considering both his age and his contract situation.

However, given Maignan’s pedigree as one of world football’s most commanding shot-stoppers, £22 million is surely a price worth paying – especially if they sell Sanchez.

Every title-winning side in history have one thing in common – the presence of a world-class keeper. Maignan, who’s been lavished with praise by his fellow top-level players, arguably stands out as the best option by far this summer.

“He is physical, quick, he has clean technique. He is very strong. He is one of the best in the world,” said Liverpool keeper Alisson about Maignan’s quality.

“The quality of goalkeepers has really increased – Mike Maignan is within this elite.”
