PSL franchises urge PCB to revisit revenue-share model

One of their main demands is to be exempted from government taxes, at least until they break even on their investments

Umar Farooq28-Nov-2018Three years into its existence and with none of the teams close to making profits, PSL franchises are urging the PCB to revisit its revenue-share model ahead of the fourth season. One of their main demands is to be exempted from government taxes, at least until they break even on their investments.Five franchises – the sixth one, formerly Multan Sultans, is currently without ownership – met with the PCB a day after the draft in Islamabad, where they were unanimous in their concerns about the league’s financial model. A three-member committee including Javed Afridi, owner of Peshawar Zalmi, Salman Iqbal of Karachi Kings and Ehsan Mani, the PCB chairman, has been formed to find ways to make the PSL more “sustainable” and gain tax breaks. The federal government as well the provincial government of Punjab have asked the PCB to make an official request for exemption in writing, one which will be put in front of the cabinet for a decision. Should they decide not to offer any relief, ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB could register the PSL in Gilgit-Baltistan, a northern province where they could take advantage of laxer taxation. Afridi revealed that registering the league as an offshore company is also an option.Over the last couple of seasons, franchises have raised concerns about the amount of tax they have paid on top of their franchise fees and other operational expenses. The first set of commercial and sponsorship rights deals the PSL signed up when it launched have now ended, and with enhanced deals now being inked in, as well as the scare caused by Multan Sultans’s financial meltdown, the remaining five have sensed this is the time to push for a greater slice of the pie.”Especially after Multan Sultans, we all are concerned about the league’s sustainability,” Afridi told ESPNcricinfo. “All eyes are on the PSL because this league is going to pave the way for other sports in the country. But with this model we are afraid we cannot go any further.”All five franchises came in together in the national spirit and spent a lot of money for the best interest of the country but for how long are we going to bear the losses? We are actually sucking money from our parent companies and are not even close to breaking even. We need a roadmap with a model which is more sustainable.”There should be parameters that should be laid down with tax exemption for sports because in future we will also have a hockey league and there should be a national sports policy to encourage investors to come forward. We have been paying 16% sales tax to the provincial government and 10% as witholding tax to the federal government without making profits. We met with finance minister Asad Umar last week and he seems to be very passionate about the game. They sought some time to revert back to us and we are hopeful this year there should be a permanent resolution to our problems.”The financial model adopted by the PCB in 2016 offers equal shares from a central revenue pool to all franchises, despite the difference in franchise fees. The two most expensive franchises – Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars, sold for USD 2.6 million and USD 2.5 million respectively per year – have argued that the revenue shares should be on a pro rata model, reflecting the expense of the franchise fee. Quetta Gladiators pay USD 1.1 million per year as their franchise fee, as comparison. In theory, however, both Karachi and Lahore should have greater commercial opportunities, based as they are in the two biggest cities in the country. The five franchises have also asked for an increase in their revenue shares. Afridi confirmed that each of the five franchises are operating at losses since the inaugural edition in 2016. For the first three years, the PCB put 85% of the PSL’s media rights revenue, 50% of the title sponsorship rights money, and 50-60% of the gate money into a central pool, which was then shared out equally among the franchises.Another bone of contention is tied to the falling value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. According to the agreements signed in 2016, franchise fees have to be paid in dollars – at the time it was signed, the exhange rate was PKR 105 to the dollar. Over the last year, as Pakistan’s economy has slowed down, it has shot up to PKR 134. The franchises want to peg the rate or pay in Pakistani rupees at the same rate when the contracts were signed. In 2015, the PCB had sold the first five PSL franchises for USD 93 million for a ten-year period. Karachi was the most expensive, with the ARY media group shelling out USD 26 million for ownership. Lahore was sold for USD 25 million, Peshawar for USD 16 million, Islamabad for USD 15 million and Quetta for USD 11 million.PCB’s new title rights deal with HBL, at USD 14.3 million, is nearly three times bigger than the last deal in 2015. But the renewal is pegged at the same dollar rate signed three years ago, an option not offered to franchises.

Chandimal doubtful for Asia Cup; Dananjaya to miss at least two games

Dananjaya is awaiting the birth of his child, while Chandimal suffered a finger fracture during Sri Lanka’s domestic T20s

Madushka Balasuriya 04-Sep-2018Akila Dananjaya is set to miss at least the first two games of the Asia Cup as he awaits the birth of his first child. Dinesh Chandimal meanwhile is in doubt after sustaining a hairline fracture on the middle finger of his right hand during Sri Lanka’s recently-concluded domestic T20 tournament.Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in the tournament opener on September 15, with their next game set for September 17 against Afghanistan. The absence of Dananjaya is particularly a blow, with the offspinner being among Sri Lanka’s main threats in the shorter formats of the game, having also regularly taken up new-ball duties in the crucial Powerplay period. With the top two teams from each groups of three making it through to the Super Four stage, the truncated nature of the tournament leaves little margin for error and Sri Lanka will be hoping the offspin of Dilruwan Perera and the return of Lasith Malinga will help offset Dananjaya’s unavailability.Chandimal will likely be replaced by Niroshan Dickwella who is on standby after missing out on the initial squad. Dickwella was also dropped for the one-off T20 against South Africa at home last month when Chandimal had returned from the ICC-imposed spirit-of-cricket suspension.Dickwella’s omission had in fact come as a surprise, having been one of the few Sri Lankan batsmen to consistently trouble South Africa’s bowlers in that series. He had opened the innings throughout the ODIs, scoring 158 runs at an average of 31.60 and a strike rate of 82.72 – only Kusal Perera and Angelo Mathews had performed better. However, he put up a sub-par display in Sri Lanka’s domestic T20 tournament post the South Africa series, where he scored just 24 runs in four outings. The selectors expect to know more about Chandimal’s injury in the coming week.

Howe Is A Fan: Newcastle On Alert As Target’s Contract Talks Continue

Back among Europe's elite, Newcastle United's need for squad depth is arguably greater than ever as they look to cause shocks in the Champions League whilst balancing a push for consecutive top-four finishes in the Premier League. They did well in the summer to welcome the likes of Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali to bolster their side, but the Magpies could yet turn their attention towards future additions.

From Eddie Howe's perspective, it may be a case of the more talent, the better when it comes to his Newcastle squad. He will know that, with the right players, the sky is the limit at St James' Park. And, with that said, reports suggest that Newcastle are on alert regarding a particular Premier League star.

What's the latest Newcastle United transfer news?

During the summer transfer window, Newcastle spent a reported €153m (£133m) on reinforcements, and have reaped the rewards for splashing the cash ever since, maintaining a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions, including the recent 4-1 thrashing of Paris Saint-Germain. The only way is up for the Magpies, who look better than ever under Howe.

Things could yet get even better, too, with TalkSport's Alex Crook recently providing a Jarrod Bowen transfer update. According to Crook, the West Ham United winger's contract talks are moving slowly, and as a result, Newcastle are on alert. Howe is reportedly a "long-term admirer" of the England international, who has also been linked with Liverpool.

As things stand, Bowen's current West Ham contract comes to an end in the summer of 2025, meaning that he will be entering the final year of his deal as of next season. If the Hammers fail to negotiate an extension, they may be forced to cash in sooner rather than later in a situation similar to that of Declan Rice, who completed a move to Arsenal for a reported £105m in the summer just gone.

How has Jarrod Bowen performed this season?

West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen has once again been the main man for West Ham this season, finding the back of the net five times in eight games in all competitions and assisting a further two goals. His impressive form makes Newcastle and Liverpool's reported interest of little surprise, especially given that he has outperformed some of Howe's current options at St James' Park in certain areas in the Premier League, as per FBref:

His performances throughout the last year or so have resulted in deserved praise, including from West Ham manager David Moyes, who said via the club's official website back in April: "Look, I think Jarrod in recent weeks has been the one who has been providing the assists for us. He makes the goal last week against Fulham and even midweek he made the goal. Overall, I think he seems to be the one who's making chances. What we’ve missed a little bit is his goals.

“(Against Arsenal) he gets on the end of one and finishes it, which was great. It's what he wants to do, and hopefully, if he can add another half a dozen goals between now and the end of the season, it would be great.”

Massive problem for Erik ten Hag! Man Utd boss opens up on his 'biggest frustrations' as Red Devils are without a left-back for the rest of the season

Erik ten Hag has described Manchester United being without a recognised left-back for the rest of the season as one of his "biggest frustrations".

Reguilon had loan spell cut shortLeft-backs Malacia and Shaw injuredTen Hag opens up on injury frustrationsGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils cut short Sergio Reguilon's loan spell from Tottenham in January after Ten Hag said his medical staff assured him left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia would both be fit and available in January. While the former returned, the England international then suffered a muscle injury five games into his comeback and is set to miss the rest of the season. With Malacia also sidelined, Ten Hag hinted United would have kept Reguilon had he known he would have been short of defenders.

AdvertisementGetty WHAT ERIK TEN HAG SAID

He told reporters: “In December I had talks, internally, with the medical and performance [staff]. They assured me they will both be fit in January and so you will have two left full-backs. Then you have a third one, so I would have to always disappoint one full-back [Reguilon]. We're talking about one of the biggest frustrations. You can accept in one position that a player is not available, but when two players are not available over the course of the season, that's very frustrating. It's very difficult to catch up as a team, but we've dealt with it in the best way, but of course it's a disadvantage.”

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

United have had a lengthy injury list this season but they have still been out of sorts throughout much of the campaign. However, Ten Hag, who has won 60 matches as United boss, feels they would have won a lot more games with a fully fit squad and the team's future is bright.

“Imagine if we had many more players available and not setbacks and injuries. It could easily have been 75 wins and that tells the bright future of this team. When you compare it with other managers, other teams, or previous managers in this big club, you can see there is a bright future. No team can deal with so many injuries. We missed so many key players over the part of the season. We've had big setbacks, but we keep going and have a strong mentality. We keep fighting and keep pushing the team in the right direction," he added.

Liverpool: Reds dud was once compared to Suarez, now he’s worth just £2.5m

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has enjoyed a number of huge successes in the transfer market over the years throughout his time at Anfield.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Alisson were all signed by the German head coach and went on to become influential players for the club, with some of them remaining key figures to date.

Who are Klopp's most expensive Liverpool signings?

Klopp has not been afraid to splash the cash when provided the chance to do so by FSG and has struck gold a number of times since his move to the club in 2015.

Whilst it is easy to focus on the big-money signings who caught the eye and became stars for the club, Klopp also played a blinder with the bargain signing and then sale of winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

He was a solid and reliable performer for the Reds during his spell at Anfield and the German boss went on to sell him at the perfect time before his market value plummeted.

How much did Liverpool pay for Shaqiri?

The Reds reportedly splashed out a fee of £13.5m to sign the Switzerland international from Stoke City in the summer of 2018 after they activated a relegation clause in his contract with the Potters, who dropped down to the Championship that year.

Klopp described it as a "perfect" move and a no-brainer for the club as the talented forward had already proven his quality at Premier League level. Coincidentally, he'd also proven himself to be a little like one former Red. After scoring at Euro 2018, just a month before his move, one football writer Andrew Beasley said: "That Shaqiri goal reeks of Suárez against Everton at the Kop end in 2014."

Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Swiss joined Stoke from Italian giants Inter in the summer of 2015 and enjoyed an impressive few years at the club with 15 goals and 15 assists in 92 appearances in all competitions.

His most productive season in a Potters shirt came during the 2017/18 campaign as he contributed with eight goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League starts.

The Switzerland forward averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.24 which happened to be the highest score within the squad, ahead of second-placed Kurt Zouma's 7.07.

Shaqiri was unfortunate to end the season with only seven assists as the left-footed winger created a whopping 14 'big chances' for his teammates and provided 2.1 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, 1.2 more per match than any other Stoke player with more than one league appearance.

That sublime form came after the ex-Bayern Munich prospect produced four goals and two assists in 21 Premier League starts during the 2016/17 campaign. In that time, he created five 'big chances' and delivered two key passes per outing.

These statistics show that Liverpool were bringing in a player who had already proven himself to be an effective forward in the top-flight of English football for a relatively low fee.

How many goals did Shaqiri score for Liverpool?

The Switzerland star racked up eight goals in 63 appearances in all competitions for the Reds in three seasons with the club before his exit in 2021.

Former Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri, who joined as a back-up to the likes of Mane and Salah, caught the eye when called upon by the ex-Dortmund head coach throughout his first season on Merseyside.

The talented attacker scored six goals and provided three assists in 11 Premier League starts for the Reds, which worked out as an average of one goal contribution every 1.2 starts. Evidently, he was a reliable option for Liverpool to bring in when one of the frontline options needed a rest or missed a game through injury or suspension.

Only Roberto Firmino, Mane, and Salah scored more league goals for Liverpool than Shaqiri during the 2018/18 campaign, illustrating how impactful he was in spite of his limited game time on the pitch.

He also provided two assists in two Champions League starts for the club that season as Klopp's side went on to win the competition with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

However, Shaqiri then struggled even more for minutes on the pitch over the next two years as he managed seven Premier League starts in his final two campaigns at Anfield, in which time he chipped in with one goal and two assists.

Where is Xherdan Shaqiri now?

Liverpool ended up playing a blinder with the Swiss gem as they opted to sell him to Lyon in the summer of 2021 after his lack of game time. Since then, his value has plummeted, suggesting a sale was made at precisely the right time.

Football Transfers rated his Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at €11.2m (£9.8m) in December of 2021, shortly after his move to France.

Shaqiri only played 16 matches for the Ligue 1 outfit and contributed with two goals and three assists before a move to MLS side Chicago Fire in 2022.

He has racked up 12 goals and 11 assists in 59 appearances for the American team to date and has scored three goals and produced three assists in 26 MLS outings in 2023 so far.

Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri.

At the time of writing (25/09/2023), FootballTransfers has his xTV at €2.9m (£2.5m), meaning that his market value has dropped by a staggering 74% in just two years since his move from Liverpool.

Klopp clearly made a terrific decision to cash in on Shaqiri when he did as the 31-year-old has struggled to get back to his best and currently finds himself playing outside of Europe's major leagues with a decreasing market value.

Liverpool picked him up for a fairly cheap price and enjoyed his talents throughout the 2018/19 season and, although they may be disappointed with how the next two years went, have now been able to watch on as he has struggled since moving on from Anfield.

Celtic: £1.6m signing saw his value soar by 338% under Rodgers

Celtic have been unable to unearth a number of stars in recent years as they have plucked out talented young prospects for modest fees before selling them for a significant profit.

Who are Celtic's most expensive sales?

The Hoops have raked in millions from player sales having proven to be an excellent landing spot for promising talents to come and showcase their ability as part of a dominant side in Scotland.

The club's five-most expensive sales in their history highlight their ability to develop signings as only one of the five – Kieran Tierney – came through the academy system at Parkhead.

Another player whom the club, and manager at the time Ronny Deila, played a blinder with was Scottish central midfielder Stuart Armstrong, whose value soared during his time with the Hoops.

Deila, who won two Scottish Premiership titles and one League Cup in Scotland, snapped up the talented gem from Dundee United and it turned out to be an outstanding piece of business by the Norwegian tactician.

How much did Celtic pay for Stuart Armstrong?

The Hoops reportedly splashed out a fee of £1.6m to sign the technically-gifted ace from the fellow Scottish side during the January transfer window in 2015.

They had two bids rejected by Dundee United earlier that window and faced competition from Premier League team Burnley but were ultimately able to secure his services for the aforementioned figure, which was said to be too expensive for the Clarets as they backed away from a possible deal.

Celtic signed the 22-year-old after he had proven himself to be a reliable attacking outlet at Premiership level with United.

Former Dundee United midfielder Stuart Armstrong.

Armstrong racked up 21 goals and 31 assists in 150 appearances for his former club and provided a regular threat at the top end of the pitch during his final two league campaigns.

The versatile gem, who was deployed out wide or in the middle of the park, produced eight goals and seven assists in 36 Premiership matches throughout the 2013/14 season. He also managed an outstanding three goals and three assists in five SFA Cup clashes that term.

Celtic's attention was then caught by his performances during the first half of the following campaign as the central midfielder scored six goals and assisted six in 20 league matches for United, which was an average of one goal contribution every 1.67 matches – better than his average of one every 2.4 outings in 2013/14.

This convinced the Hoops to splash out £1.6m to secure his signature and it turned out to be a fantastic decision as Armstrong enjoyed a brilliant spell with the Scottish giants.

How many goals did Armstrong score for Celtic?

The Scotland international, who has been capped 43 times by his country to date, went on to score 28 goals in 144 appearances for the Bhoys during his three-and-a-half-year stint at the club.

Armstrong, however, did not enjoy the best of starts to his career with Celtic as he managed just one goal and four assists in 15 Premiership matches over the second half of the 2014/15 campaign.

The attack-minded midfield wizard got his feet under the table ahead of the 2015/16 season and went on to produce four goals and seven assists in 25 league outings for the Scottish giants.

Former Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong.

His best form in a Hoops shirt came during the following campaign as Brendan Rodgers arrived at the helm in 2016 and got the former Dundee United star firing.

Armstrong ended the 2016/17 term with an outstanding 15 goals and seven assists in 31 league matches for the club, which worked out as an average of one goal involvement every 1.41 outings.

In 2017, Rodgers lavished praise on the central midfielder and described him as a "powerful" player who has "everything" to his game. The Northern Irish tactician said that he was impressed by Armstrong's raw materials and went as far as to say that he was a "joy" to work with in Glasgow.

He did not hit quite the same levels the following year, as Armstrong scored three goals and provided five assists in 27 Premiership games, but that did not stop Premier League side Southampton from making a move for him.

How much did Celtic sell Armstrong for?

The Hoops eventually cashed in on Scotland international during the summer transfer window in 2018 as the Saints snapped him up for a reported fee of £7m.

Sky Sports claimed that talks over an improved contract at Parkhead had stalled with the goalscoring midfielder and that opened the door for the English club to secure his services.

The £7m fee that they received for him did, however, mean that the player's market value soared by a whopping 338% from the initial £1.6m they paid Dundee United for him during his time in Glasgow.

This shows that Deila struck gold for Celtic with his deal back in 2015 as Armstrong went on to become an excellent performer under Rodgers and earned the club a big payday just over three years later.

Where is Armstrong now?

The 31-year-old is still with Southampton and is currently playing Championship football at St. Mary's after he made 149 Premier League appearances for the club.

Armstrong produced 16 goals and 12 assists at the top level of English football and has played 175 games for the Saints in total since his move in 2018.

Football Transfers now rates his current Expected Transfer Value at €4.8m (£4.1m) with his market price having plummeted towards the twilight of his playing career.

Overall, Deila's decision to sign Armstrong from Dundee United was a shrewd one that resulted in Celtic enjoying his talents on the pitch for a number of years before raking in a big fee for his services before his value started to drop.

It also showed that there is value to be had in picking up young Scottish players from fellow Premiership teams and that the club does not always need to look abroad to find up and coming talents.

Will try to improve Bangladesh's away record – Shakib

Shakib Al Hasan has said leading Bangladesh’s Test team should be easier now than it was in his first stint, given how settled the current group of players is

Mohammad Isam11-Dec-2017

AFP

Shakib Al Hasan has said leading Bangladesh’s Test team should be easier now than it was in his first stint, given how settled the current group of players is. The BCB reappointed Shakib on Sunday to replace Mushfiqur Rahim following a difficult tour of South Africa. When Shakib was captain in all formats from 2009 to 2011, Bangladesh won 23 out of 60 international matches, but only won one Test, against a second-string West Indies side in 2009. Shakib was the second-highest run-scorer and highest wicket-taker during that phase of his captaincy. This time around, Shakib feels there are more performers in the team.”The job will be easier this time, definitely,” Shakib said. “Most of our cricketers are performing almost every time. The captain doesn’t have to do much when they are doing well. I hope everyone does well together, which will only do good to the team’s cause.”Notwithstanding the criticism he faced as captain, Mushfiqur is Bangladesh’s most successful Test captain with seven wins, and led them to notable victories over England, Sri Lanka and Australia. Shakib said he was looking forward to taking a developing team to the next level, and hoped to improve Bangladesh’s dismal record away from home.”It is a new responsibility,” Shakib said. “We have been doing well in Tests in the last few years, winning against England, Sri Lanka and Australia. I will try to improve upon this. It is hard to say how different this stint is going to be, but it will be important to get accustomed to the situation.”I think we feel slightly more comfortable playing at home and since we don’t have much success outside, maybe it becomes harder. But this is also an opportunity to do well. If we can start this, why not? Someone has to do it. Although it is not going to be easy. But a lot of things are possible with the way our team has shaped up.”Shakib said he would bank on the senior players, particularly the new vice-captain Mahmudullah whom he said has grown as a captain on his own stead.”We have a number of team leaders, who take a collective decision,” Shakib said. “It doesn’t matter who the captain is, when we go out in the middle. We help each other out.”[Mahmudullah] Riyad has been captaining quite well in the last few years in the BPL. He always had that leadership skill. I think it will be easier for me.”
