A 2023 move to the Middle East did not play out as planned for Neymar, as he suffered knee ligament damage within weeks of committing to a lucrative contract at Al-Hilal. He worked his way back from that ailment, only to then pick up muscle complaints.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With Neymar unable to make a telling contribution on the field in Riyadh, the decision was taken to rip up his deal and release the Brazil international as a free agent. He has retraced steps to where it all began for him at Santos.

Neymar, at 33 years of age, has taken in three appearances for Santos since penning an initial six-month deal. He is still waiting on a first victory in familiar surroundings, with two draws and a defeat taken in so far. His latest outing came in a clash with derby rivals Corinthians.

    WHAT NEYMAR SAID

The ex-Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain playmaker is still searching for a spark, but has told reporters on when he expects to be back to something resembling his best: “Physically, I'm getting better and better. Today I felt better than in the last game, so it's little by little. I won't be able to get back into shape all of a sudden. But in two or three games, I'll be 100%.”

POSTURA NO MERCADO

Ponting: Depth around Australian cricket not where it needs to be

Former captain still insists that team can win the T20 World Cup if all first-choice picks are fit and healthy

Andrew McGlashan14-Aug-2021Ricky Ponting has questioned the depth in Australian cricket after the poor T20 results on the recent tours of West Indies and Bangladesh but believes the team can still challenge for the World Cup if their strongest side is available.Australia ended the twin tours with an 2-8 scoreline across the two T20 contests which was capped off by being skittled for 62, their lowest T20 total, in the final match in Dhaka. While Ponting acknowledged the challenging conditions in Bangladesh he was concerned that performances got worse as the matches went on. Only Mitchell Marsh emerged with an enhanced reputation with the bat although the bowling attack largely performed creditably.”The lack of knowhow and skill in those conditions brought us undone again,” Ponting told Tim Paine on the Test captain’s radio show. “It’s been the achilles heel for Australian cricket for as long as I can remember – more so in Test cricket, but we’ve always found a way to be very competitive in Sri Lanka and India in white-ball cricket. Just goes to show the depth around Australia cricket is not where it needs to be so there’s some work to do there.”The T20 World Cup is not far away so hopefully we get all the boys fit and healthy, because I still think with everyone fit and healthy in the UAE that Australian team can push really hard to win the title. Let’s keep our fingers crossed we can put our strongest XI on the field.”Captain Aaron Finch was ruled out of the Bangladesh series with a knee injury which meant Australia were missing up to eight players who could be considered among first picks including David Warner, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis from the batting order.”There were a lot of names not there…but it almost seemed they got worse during that series,” Ponting said. “There’s no doubt those conditions were really difficult, but that’s the worry for me. They’ve been there long enough and done some training on wickets you’d have thought were quite similar to what they played on yet the further the series went, whether a lack of confidence or skill or game awareness, I’m sure they would have been shattered.”It now seems likely that a number of the Australia players will prepare for the World Cup by returning to the IPL for its resumption next month although Pat Cummins is not expected to be available due to the birth of his first child.Ponting, the head coach of Delhi Capitals, said he was still waiting for confirmation on whether he would have Smith, who is recovering from an elbow injury, and Stoinis available but sees it as their best opportunity to be tuned up for the World Cup.”There’s no doubt it’s their best preparation, in those exact conditions playing probably the strongest domestic T20 tournament in the world,” he said. “I’m not saying it just because I want some of the Australian players there with Delhi, but it sounds like our domestic season will be pushed back so they’ll be no domestic cricket here before the T20 World Cup, so preparation wise it’s spot on.”Not sure if they’ll be any restrictions on the bowlers going there, there may well be, but certainly the guys like Smith, Davey, Maxi, Stoinis who have been out of cricket for three or fourth months they need to get back into the groove.”

Friedkin Group hold talks over "unbelievable" 54 y/o Everton manager target

The Friedkin Group have reportedly held internal talks over the appointment of an “unbelievable” manager to replace Sean Dyche at Everton if they complete their takeover in the coming days and weeks.

Everton manager latest

Last Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to Leicester City has done little to quieten the rumours surrounding Dyche’s future, following such a poor start to the season in the Premier League. The Blues have accumulated just one point from five matches, with a fourth relegation battle in a row increasingly looking on the cards.

Unsurprisingly, some names have been thrown into the hat when it comes to possible replacements for the Englishman, with a David Moyes reunion mooted in one report. The Scot spent 11 years at Goodison Park between 2002 and 2013 and could be a popular appointment among a chunk of the fanbase, given his history.

David Moyes

He was most recently in charge of West Ham, departing at the end of last season, and his knowledge of the Blues could make him a strong choice to come in and stave off the threat of relegation, taking the club into a new era at their Bramley Moore Dock stadium.

Moyes isn’t the only figure being linked with the potentially soon-to-be-vacant manager’s role at Everton, however, with ex-Borussia Dortmund boss also Edin Terzic backed to come in. He guided the Bundesliga giants into last season’s Champions League final against Real Madrid, losing 2-0 at Wembley.

Friedkin Group keen on "unbelievable" manager

Now, Give Me Sport report that Everton are interested in making Gareth Southgate their next manager, should they become the club’s new owners and decide to sack Dyche. On X, the reliable Paul Joyce has claimed that an agreement is in place to buy Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1% stake in the Blues, and the update on Southgate says Dan Friedkin has spoken internally about hiring Southgate once a deal goes through.

Southgate left his role in charge of the England after Euro 2024, feeling he had taken the team as far as he could, following their 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final. He could be a divisive appointment at Everton, with the 54-year-old gaining plenty of admirers with England but also having a lot of detractors at the same time.

To some, he did a fantastic job in charge of the national team, guiding them to two major finals, but to others, he was a defence-minded manager who didn’t get the best out of the most talented group of English players in years. For that reason, Southgate would be a risk, especially as his only managerial experience at club level came at Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009, during which time he suffered relegation from the Premier League to the Championship.

That being said, his record for England does speak for itself – only Sir Alf Ramsey had got them into a major final in the country’s history before him, but he did it twice – while Jude Bellingham has said of him: “It was a privilege being lead by someone who is so dedicated and passionate, not only is Gareth easily one of the best coaches in the history of the national team but also an unbelievable human being.”

Everton takeover "very close" and they're eyeing a "fantastic" new manager

He won at Goodison Park last season.

ByHenry Jackson Sep 23, 2024

Southgate has arguably done enough at international level to show that he deserves another crack at the Premier League, so despite the risk element, Friedkin should be trusted to go with his gut if his takeover goes through.

Will Young, Alex Lees tons leave Warwickshire ferreting for answers

Durham extend lead between showers as signs of low bounce warn of trials ahead

Paul Edwards30-Apr-2021

Will Young was the first of Durham’s openers to record a hundred•Getty Images

Boiled cannabis or Viagra? These were the bizarre alternatives that came to mind as one watched Durham strengthen their grip on this match to a point close to invulnerability. It should be pointed out at once that one is not referring to the lunch menu offered to the media at the Riverside; understandably enough in these straitened times, that consists of nothing at all. Rather, one is alluding to two of the apparent stimuli to failure and success in this rich, wonderful and endlessly diverse part of England. For in his quite brilliant book Matthew Engel notes that a man appeared in Hartlepool magistrates court a few years ago accused of ill-treating his greyhounds by feeding them steaming ganja if he wanted them to lose and blue pills if he wanted them to win. The first had the desired effect and the second made them “run like mad”.It need hardly be stated in the strongest terms possible that the cricketers in this match were fuelled in entirely conventional fashion. Nevertheless, sport’s polarities of outcome were illustrated with extreme clarity when Alex Lees and Will Young were sharing an opening partnership of 208, thus setting a new first-wicket record for Durham against Warwickshire and thereby overtaking by six runs the mark set by Graeme Fowler and Wayne Larkins at Darlington in 1993, one of the summers in which the then-peripatetic county played on half-a-dozen grounds. The home side’s advantage was therefore over 100 before Warwickshire enjoyed their first success and it could be argued the portents were even worse for Will Rhodes’ team. The care with which the openers built their stand was quite fitting on a pitch that does not accommodate fast scoring and at least two of the wickets that fell suggested the surface’s eccentricities were becoming more marked. Given that the visitors may have to bat something like five sessions to save this game, signs of low bounce were hardly what they wished to see and one can understand why their celebrations at each success were hardly riotous. All of which makes Young and Lees’ patience in defying Warwickshire’s bowlers particularly praiseworthy. Young played the more attractive strokes and was slightly the more aggressive but the fact that he took exactly five hours to reach three figures perfectly reflects the New Zealander’s diligence in what may well be his final innings for Durham. Lees complemented his opening partner perfectly and batted through a greatly rain-shortened day for his unbeaten 126 with the care of a man who understands the self-denial required of a sheet-anchor. Gritting it out cannot have been easy against an attack which was led in determined fashion by Liam Norwell, who took two wickets, and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, who deserved better than a blank day. The one consolation for all the bowlers was that at least they were able to keep warm when called into the attack. The fielders had no such luck on a cold afternoon. The umpires, Michael Gough and Russell Warren, even wore black gloves, which made their fingers even more deathly when they had to raise them. As it was, Gough’s decision to send Young on his way for 124 was the first of three leg-before verdicts that went in the visitors’ favour during the afternoon. Scott Borthwick was lbw for 21 to a ball that kept low from Craig Miles and David Bedingham was bowled for 2 by an absolute shooter, thus giving Norwell his second success. However, since this reduced Bedingham’s average for the season to a shade over 113 and his team were hardly in dire need of his runs, one doubts he will argue the world is treating him cruelly.Next over Jack Burnham played inside Danny Briggs’ arm ball and the home side had thus lost three wickets for 13 runs in six overs. However, any further action was prevented by a prolonged heavy shower that delayed play for over two hours. The players returned for 9.3 overs late in the evening session and the calmness with which Lees and Ned Eckersley played the Warwickshire seamers boded well for Durham’s hopes of batting once in this gameBut readers may be wondering what happened to the miscreant mentioned at the start of this piece. He was banned for life from keeping greyhounds but a similar stricture was not applied to his ownership of 20 ferrets. One wonders what mood the poor animals were in as dinner-time approached? And what manner of man, unaware of their precise diet, would then follow the Northern custom of ferret-legging and risk putting one of them down his trousers?

Leeds struck gold on "special" star who’s worth more than Ramazani

Leeds United will hope the amount of outgoings that have happened already this hectic transfer window doesn't derail their Championship season completely, after a less-than-ideal opening few games back in the testing division.

Largie Ramazani's recent arrival onto the scene in West Yorkshire will have raised spirits, away from the doom and gloom mood that had engulfed proceedings after the quick fire departures of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, as Daniel Farke attempts to steer the Whites to another promotion charge with what he has at his disposal.

Wilfried Gnonto will be important to Leeds' chances of winning promotion, if he stays put between now and the imminent close of the transfer window, away from any more new faces joining.

Gnonto's time at Leeds

Gnonto has had an up-and-down relationship with the hardened Leeds masses, with the Italian attacker once handing in a transfer request to try and push through a move back up to the Premier League, after the Whites suffered a disastrous relegation.

There are new murmurs in the air that the former FC Zurich man is clamouring for a top-flight return now, but with the amount of high-profile departures that have already taken place this summer irritating the agitated Whites fanbase, it feels unlikely another star would be allowed to walk away.

Wilfried Gnonto

Last season, despite the start of it centring in on Gnonto's refusal to play, the electric 20-year-old very much played his part in Farke's men making the playoffs, with the diminutive forward picking up eight goals and two assists across the regular campaign.

Those ten goal contributions followed on from the youngster acting as a bright spark in the top-flight for Leeds, even as relegation started to stare the West Yorkshire outfit in the face, with two goals and four assists managed from 34 Premier League games.

Gnonto already has more goals donning Leeds white this season, even in its relative infancy, with this solo strike trickling in against Portsmouth opening his 2024/25 account, as the Italian continues to live up to his billing as being a "special" talent that was once handed out to him by former Whites coach Michael Skubala.

Farke and Co will pray that their new recruit Ramazani can become their next Gnonto for the Championship promotion candidates over time, with a high reported fee of £9.3m to win his services making him an expensive buy from Spain.

The standout Whites number 29 would only cost a meagre £3.8m back in 2022, in contrast, with his valuation now above that of the ex-Almeria winger's, according to Football Transfers, showcasing how the club truly won the lottery on that bargain capture two years ago.

Gnonto's value in 2024

As per the site, the 5 foot 8 attacker is now worth a bumper £18.4m, which is nearly double the reported fee Leeds have paid to snap up Ramazani.

Gnonto was once an unknown entity when it came to the English game, but the £3.8m once spent by Leeds now looks to be an absolute bargain, especially when you consider his increased importance as a livewire in an entertaining Whites group that used to boast the likes of Summerville and Rutter.

2. Brenden Aaronson

£17.3m

3. Ethan Ampadu

£17.3m

4. Ilian Meslier

£16.3m

5. Maximilian Wober

£14.2m

With that sumptuous duo now both at West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion respectively, Gnonto is actually the most valuable asset at Elland Road currently, when looking at the table above, with the powers that be at Leeds anxious that he could try and push through a last-minute move before the close of August to ditch the Championship side.

Ramazani will have been purchased to give Leeds some needed firepower, having fired in three goals last season for Almeria in La Liga, but it would be an extreme ask for him to be the main man if Gnonto does depart.

Largie Ramazani

The former Manchester United youngster already has that high £9.3m price tag above his head that could work against him, but everyone at Leeds will hope he can shine this season alongside Gnonto remaining put.

Imagine him & Ramazani: Leeds ready next big move for "pocket rocket"

Leeds United could now sign this entertaining star after snapping up Largie Ramazani.

Jaiswal 101, Sarfaraz 64 for MumbaiAfter losing to Hyderabad in their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League opener on Friday, defending champions Mumbai bounced back to hunt down 235 against Haryana in Pune.Yashasvi Jaiswal led the steep chase with a 48-ball century – his fourth in T20 cricket – with 16 fours and a six. He eventually holed out with Mumbai seven away from victory. Atharva Ankolekar wrapped it up for Mumbai with a six and a four, in the company of allrounder Sairaj Patil. After Ajinkya Rahane fell for 21 off ten balls, Jaiswal combined with Sarfaraz Khan for an 88-run second-wicket partnership off just 37 balls. Sarfaraz, who is part of capped batters up for bidding in the first set of the IPL 2026 auction, boosted his chances with 64 off 25 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. After winning the Player-of-the-Match award, Jaiswal called up Sarfaraz and shared it with him. Though Mumbai suffered a late wobble, they cruised to victory with 15 balls and four wickets to spare.Earlier in the day, after Mumbai had opted to bowl, Patil emerged as their only wicket-taker, coming away with 2 for 44. Shardul Thakur also kept things tight on a small ground, prompting Haryana to retire Samant Jakhar out on 31 off 14 after the batter had struggled to get the Mumbai captain away in the 19th over. Haryana’s captain Ankit Kumar hit 89 off 42 balls, his joint-highest T20 score, but it went in vain.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Hemanth Reddy, Prasad stun PunjabAndhra handed Punjab their second successive defeat in the Super League, at the MCA Stadium in Pune. M Hemanth Reddy, 23, was the hero for Andhra, clattering a 48-ball hundred – his first in only his second T20. He finished unbeaten on 109 off 53 balls as Andhra chased 206 from 56 for 5 for their first win in the Super League.Reddy was well supported by No. 7 SDNV Prasad, who scored an unbeaten 53 off 35 balls, after Andhra were reduced to 56 for 5 in the ninth over. Their unbroken 155-run partnership is the highest for any wicket for Andhra in men’s T20 cricket. It is also the second-highest partnership for the sixth wicket or lower in men’s T20 cricket behind Andre Russell and Kennar Lewis’s 161-run stand for the sixth wicket for Jamaica Tallawahs in CPL 2018.After being asked to bat first, Punjab had posted 205 for 5 on the back of forty-somethings from Harnoor Singh Pannu (42), Anmolpreet Singh (47), Salil Arora (42*) and Ramandeep Singh (43). After bagging a hat-trick in the previous game, India international Nitish Kumar Reddy returned 1 for 39 in his four overs.File photo – Ishan Kishan’s 63 set up Jharkhand’s thrilling win•PTI

Jharkhand prevail in last-over finish vs MPVenkatesh Iyer took 3 for 17 from his three overs for Madhya Pradesh, but they fell short by just one run against Jharkhand after requiring 13 runs to win off the final over, bowled by Sushant Mishra.Earlier, Ishan Kishan was the architect of Jharkhand’s innings, making another quick start at the top after his 47 against Punjab in their previous game. He scored even quicker against MP, getting to 63 off 30 deliveries, including four fours and five sixes, before Iyer snared him up.Iyer’s two more wickets slowed down a Jharkhand innings where no other batter managed to cross 30. However, Iyer did not have much luck with the bat in hand himself as he fell for 8 at the top of the order. Harpreet Singh (77*) and Harsh Gawli (61) put up a 122-run partnership afterwards. By the time Gawli fell, MP needed just 41 more runs from 25 balls. The required rate rose thereafter, and the equation eventually became too steep as Jharkhand solidified their spot at the top of their Super Group table.File photo – Tanmay Agarwal’s 73 helped Hyderabad breeze through their chase•PTI

By the time he was dismissed in the 17th over, the scores were level, and they eventually won with six wickets and 17 balls to spare. Agarwal played most of innings in the company of Rahul Buddhi – who made 55 off 36 – during a 95-run partnership for the third wicket.Earlier, No. 4 Mahipal Lomror led Rajasthan’s comeback after they had slipped to 17 for 2, then 85 for 5. His 48 was the highest score of a stop-start innings where four of the top seven got into the 20s but no one could kick on.Manav Suthar (2-20) and Kamlesh Nagarkoti (2-35) were the only wicket-takers for Rajasthan as they struggled to keep up in the chase. Hyderabad now sit at the top of their own Super League table, as the only unbeaten side in Group B after two matches.

O time pouco sofre, vale lembrar. Uma equipe bem sólida defensivamente com ações bem definidas de jogo, mas que, diante do Uruguai, precisará fazer mais. Fazer pelos 14 mil torcedores que estarão nas arquibancadas.
