According to the sources of the investigation team, various aspects of the murder case were discussed in Jamaica. The most important among them was the involvement of bookies in Woolmer’s murder, often cited as the prime reason behind his murder.

Asia storm back to thrash Africa

Scorecard and ball-by-balldetailsDefending just 105, Asia stamped their authority on the Twenty20 match against Africa by dismissing the opposition for a paltry 45. Smarting from a top-order collapse inflicted by Ashlyn Kilowan, as well as from some inopportune run-outs, the Asian side stormed back to ruthlessly shred the African batting order.Though the game finished with five overs still remaining, the action in the preceding 35 gave no one a chance to complain that they were short-changed. While good fielding dominated in the first half, impressive bowling dominated the second. Rumeli Dhar had impressive figures of 4 for 8, while her opening partner, Jhulan Goswami, was not required to bowl her last over.Goswami had, however, struck the first blows when she dismissed Margaret Banja and Julie Chibhabha for ducks in the first over. In her next one, she dismissed Trisha Chetty for one – all her dismissals were lbw. Dhar, meanwhile, trapped one in front of the stumps, and bowled the rest.Eight ducks in the match indicate that the women reversed the trend of Twenty20 cricket – usually associated with fours and sixes – yet they managed to keep the buzz in the game. A spunky partnership between Urooj Mumtaz and Chamari Polgampola for the ninth wicket ensured that Asia got to a competitive total after being 47 for 6 at the half-way mark.Bad calling by Sulakshana Naik had Jaya Sharma run out at the non-striker’s end without facing a ball and Kilowan then struck twice in consecutive balls, trapping Mithali Raj leg before with her first ball and bowling Dedunu Silva off the next.Cri-Zelda Brits, the Africa captain, would be disappointed that her side allowed Asia to set them a target of 106. It has to be said here that there are only four players from among ICC’s top-ten-ranked countries in the Africa side. Asia were always to be favoured – with six players from India, who are ranked No. 2 – but the manner in which they wrapped up the match was still impressive. Alicia Smith top-scored for Africa with 23, their only double-digit score.Spectators trickled into the ground as the hour drew closer to the men’s game and were not disappointed by what they got to see while they waited. Music accompanied every bit of action on the field and it looked like Indian crowds were getting attuned to Twenty20 cricket. The curtain-raiser was meant to whet the crowd’s appetite – excite them without stealing the show. But if the women ended up stealing the show, it would only reflect poorly on the men.

India physiotherapist breaks hand

John Gloster, the Indian team physiotherapist, has broken his wrist in Belfast and may miss the remainder of India’s tour to Ireland and England.Gloster broke his right hand on Thursday, apparently tripping on the boundary line, during a team training session.Ratnakar Shetty, BCCI’s chief administrative officer, received a call from Gloster informing him of the injury. “He may need to go in for a surgery. It could take at least one or two months for him to recover,” Shetty told . “We are looking for a replacement,” he added.India are travelling without an official coach as well, the board having failed in their efforts to wrap up the appointment of Graham Ford, currently with Kent just before the team departed for Ireland. Former Test cricketer Chandu Borde has been appointed for the tour as manager.

de Villiers and Bodi take South Africa to five-wicket win

A lower-order fightback from Gary Brent and Elton Chigumbura wasn’t enough to prevent South Africa from coasting to a five-wicket victory in the first one-dayer at Bulawayo. Zimbabwe recovered from a disastrous 72 for 7 to post 206 but the target was hardly challenging for the South Africans as Gulam Bodi, Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers helped themselves to half-centuries, polishing off the target with nearly three overs to spare. After losing Loots Bosman in the first over to Christopher Mpofu, Bodi and Smith added 72, ensuring Zimbabwe could take no advantage of the early dismissal. To their credit, the Zimbabwean bowlers didn’t allow the batsmen to blitz away to the modest target, and the fielders too impressed with their commitment, plugging the gaps in the infield.Smith, playing his first match since the World Cup semi-final, got into his groove with boundaries on either side of the pitch. He used his feet against the gentle medium-pace of Elton Chigumbura and brought up his fifty with a boundary, an uppish drive off the same bowler. However, Chigumbura won the battle two balls later when he held on to a one-handed return catch. At this stage, the South Africans upped the tempo and pushed the run-rate above four.Bodi had the most to gain, impressing in his debut game. He fetched his first boundary with an innovative flick across the line from off stump and kept the runs coming. He impressed with his range of strokes, caressing half-volleys past mid-off and then took on the spinners, sweeping and stepping down the track. Zimbabwe used as many as six bowlers by the 25th over but none looked like troubling the batsmen as Bodi and de Villiers milked the attack with minimum fuss.Bodi eventually fell just after reaching his fifty, beaten for turn from the Prosper Utseya and edging to Tatenda Taibu, in his first match since 2005. de Villiers then took charge of the chase, stating his intent with three boundaries in an over off Mpofu, and even the loss of two more wickets – that of Jean-Paul Duminy and de Villiers – couldn’t bring the home side back into the game.Earlier, the Zimbabwe top and middle order were exposed in their inept display, after Utseya chose to bat under sunny skies. Vusi Sibanda set the pace with some confident boundaries off the front and back foot but he was unable to convert his breezy start courtesy a brilliant catch at slip by Smith in the fifth over with the score at 21.Reckless running contributed to five of their dismissals and Hamilton Masakadza was the first victim, following a mix-up with Brendan Taylor. The arrival of Taibu spiced things up and his urgency to get off the blocks was evident as he took on the short stuff from the seamers. Taibu, perhaps the only world-class batsman in the line-up, sized up Makhaya Ntini with a fierce pull over square leg and in the company of Taylor, settled into a good rhythm, flicking anything drifting on the pads from Johan van der Wath and Morne Morkel.

Like Sibanda, Taibu too failed to sustain the momentum, edging to the keeper for 22. The introduction of Vernon Philander left the home side in further disarray, as he picked up two wickets off successive balls. An astounding one-handed pluck by Shaun Pollock at slip sent Sean Williams packing and Stuart Matsikenyeri was all at sea to an offcutter that sent his off stump for a mid-morning jog.Two more run-outs followed; that of Taylor and Utseya, adding to the embarrassment for the home side. With all the regular batsmen back in the pavilion, Brent and Chigumbura set about the repair work with nothing to lose. They buckled down and picked up singles and twos. After nearly ten overs of nudging and grafting, Chigumbura broke the shackles with cover drives off Thandi Tshabalala, while Brent used the long handle to good effect each time the bowlers, especially Ntini, erred in length. The confidence in his strokeplay rubbed off on Chigumbura. A six by Brent brought up the 150 in style and soon after, Chigumbura took control, outscoring Brent.A couple of spanking drives through the off side brought up Chigumbura’s seventh half-century in ODIs and following it, he proceeded to cart the bowlers over midwicket. A run-out, courtesy de Villiers, ended Chigumbura’s knock at 59 but Brent stayed on till the end, reaching his maiden international half-century in 78 balls. Zimbabwe posted a more respectable 206 but it was hardly a match-winning one.

Bouncy pitch greets teams as India A seek series win

After their crushing victory by an innings and 242 runs in the previousmatch, India A will guard against complacency as they seek to wrapup the series against South Africa A in their second and final Test beginning in Dharamsala tomorrow. The Indians will be aware that the South Africans, boasting of a host of Test players, are capable of leveling the series at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium. The team, led by the experienced Boeta Dippenaar, also includes Test players Ashwell Prince, Charl Langeveldt, Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn and Robin Peterson.”They [South Africa] have many good players in the side, we cannot forget that,” said Indian captain Mohmmad Kaif.Besides, the bouncy wicket may also aid the visitors, who had collapsed against the spinners in the previous match in Delhi. Commenting on the pitch, curator Anuj Paldas said, “This is green a top and it will offer bounce. But it will also assist the spinners in the last two days.”Kaif, however, did not think a bouncy pitch against the South African bowling line-up would be a problem for his team. “I’m not sure if this South African bowling attack is that good,” he said.Batsman Suresh Raina, who missed out to Bengal’s Manoj Tiwary in Delhi, is likely to be in the playing XI for this match as the team management tries to rotate its players. Raina, who just recovered from a knee injury, last played for India in January and the match would beparticularly significant for him and other fringe players ahead of the busy international season.Seamer Ishant Sharma, keen to retain his berth in the Test squad, would be looking to exploit the conditions while fellow fast bowler Pankaj Singh would also be relied upon by the team.South Africa would be under pressure after being battered in all departments of the game in the last match. However, Dippenaar was optimistic of his team’s chances in the seamer-friendly conditions. He added that seamer Dale Steyn will play, after missing the Delhi match.”The Indians played a better quality of cricket in Delhi and more than their spinners, we have to look at our fielding,” he said. “We dropped almost everyone before 30, which we won’t like to repeat here. But the seaming track can definitely benefit us.”

'England outplayed us' – Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, has blamed his side’s poor batting for the series loss to England after conceding an unbeatable 3-1 lead with one match to play. A comfortable five-wicket win at the Premadasa Stadium sealed England’s first ODI triumph in the subcontinent since 1987.”I don’t think we’ve batted well for the last three games,” said Jayawardene. “One or two individuals have been having good days but we’ve not been batting as a unit to put runs on the board for the bowlers to bowl at.”He admitted England were the better side and that they deserved to win the series. “Losing matches is not easy for us, especially at home, but credit should go to England because they’ve played some really good cricket. Some of their players have performed really well and they’ve basically outplayed us in the last few games.”Paul Collingwood, the England captain, termed his side’s comeback “unbelievable” after they won their first one-day series in Sri Lanka despite losing the series opener.”Before we came here a lot of people wrote us off. We lost that first game and the way the lads have bounced back has been unbelievable. They’ve learnt and adapted new skills and showed a lot of character.”I am very, very proud and it was a very proud moment when we knocked those runs off. I’m proud of all the players that have been involved and the management have been fantastic.”He said the series victory against India had given the team a lot of confidence.”We knew the areas we needed to improve and the key has been the belief we have built up over the last few weeks, especially the India series which was a big thing for us – that belief was not going to go after one game.”Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen scored half-centuries to help England coast to victory after the bowlers had restricted Sri Lanka to 211.

Imran Khan gives Pakistan police the slip

Former Pakistan captain turned politician Imran Khan, who gave authorities the slip over the weekend as a state of emergency was imposed through the country, has vowed to oppose President Pervez Musharraf from hiding.Imran, leader of the (The Justice Party) opposed to Musharraf, escaped from his family home while it was being searched by police as part of a government crackdown on the legal fraternity and opposition politicians. In a message passed to Reuters by his ex-wife Jemima, Imran said: “The police have ransacked my house and ill treated my family members.” He went on to accuse the USA of being complicit in Musharraf’s actions.”Our aim is to continue the struggle and mobilise the youth of the country from underground.”Jemima told the Daily Mail: “The police ransacked his house and roughed up his family. He managed to escape just before they returned with an arrest warrant to cart him off to Kot Lakpat jail. He is now in hiding along with most of his party and thousands of others who fear reprisals for criticising the government.”Imran turned to politics soon after retiring from international cricket in 1992. Though his party has limited grassroots support and has enjoyed scant electoral success, Imran has been among the most vociferous critics of the Musharraf regime.

MCC batsmen sink South Australia

MCC won by an innings and 128 runs – ScorecardSutcliffe and Leyland gave MCC a splendid start by putting up 223 for the first wicket – a record partnership for English teams against South Australia, and when stumps were drawn the score stood at 341 for five. Leyland, who might have been caught and bowled at 93, reached his hundred out of a total of 166, and when he was caught at point had hit 14 fours, mostly beautiful stroke through the covers. Sutcliffe hit out freely when he had reached three figures, and altogether claimed two sixes and thirteen fours. He gave no chance. On the second day an admirably placed field kept Jardine from scoring quickly, but the MCC captain scored a magnificent century, the only blemish being a chance in the slips when 105. Larwood hit with terrific force, his innings which included two 6’s and ten 4’s only lasting 42 minutes. Wyatt, after a shaky start, made some powerful hooks. He and Jardine established a record for the seventh wicket for an English team v. South Australia by adding 135. Jardine and Larwood also established a record by adding 106 for the eighth wicket, the previous best for a visiting English team against this State being 102 by J. T. Hearne and W. Storer in 1897-98. Grimmett gave the impression that he was taking things easily, and did not wish to put too severe a strain on his damaged ankle.Richardson and Nitschke gave South Australia a splendid start, the latter falling to Verity after he had twice hit the Yorkshireman to square leg for 6. Richardson was very severe on Bowes, his leg strokes being extremely powerful. He was not so successful against the slow bowlers. The remaining Australian batsmen did little against some very steady bowling by Brown and Verity, and, following on, they never appeared likely to save an innings defeat. In his second innings, Catchlove, a last-minute selection, batted very stolidly for four hours for his 65. Verity was the outstanding MCC bowler, and it was noticeable that he bowled a little shorter than in England. Bowes howled medium-pace most of the time and Larwood only sent down a few overs as he was suffering from a damaged toe. The English fielding on the whole was very disappointing.
