Strauss runs help stifle Nottinghamshire

ScorecardSteven Mullaney steered Nottinghamshire away from trouble before Andrew Strauss ensured there would be no hiccups for Middlesex•Getty Images

Regardless of the merits or otherwise of his playing county cricket during a wet English spring, Middlesex were grateful for the steady hand of Andrew Strauss to guide them to a draw at Trent Bridge, where the England Test captain completed his competitive preparations for the series against West Indies by compiling an unbeaten 43.Like the four innings for his county that preceded it, this one was not without flaws. It should have ended on 26, when he was dropped at the wicket off his international team-mate Stuart Broad, but otherwise demonstrated that he is timing his shots well enough. He hit seven boundaries, two off Broad, who bowled better than previously in the two matches he has played since returning from injury, four off the left-armer Harry Gurney, who dismissed him in the first innings, and one off Adams, all from authentic strokes. He did not save the game for Middlesex – that honour remains with Ollie Rayner, the heroic nightwatchman of their first innings – but he and Sam Robson for the most part ensured that Nottinghamshire’s optimistic visions of a match-winning clutch of wickets from Broad or Graeme Swann were quickly stifled. In fact, on a flat and relatively dry surface that did not deteriorate to any significant degree, Nottinghamshire’s prospects of taking 10 wickets in 51 overs were not particularly realistic. Middlesex, who had been set a target of 298 to win, were not even interested, deciding reasonably enough that having avoided the follow-on on the back of Rayner’s unbeaten 143 they would not risk letting their offspinner’s finest hour go to waste. It is not something Rayner will forget, not least because it happened on a day when he confidently expected to have been performing best-man duties at a cousin’s wedding in Middlesbrough.”I was originally in a second-team game against Warwickshire that was rained off, after which it was agreed that I would do two days here as 12th man and then go up to Middlesbrough for the wedding on Friday,” he said. “But then we turned up here and it was dry and I got the go-ahead to play. I was not going to turn down the opportunity. When Finny and Strauss came back into the team I looked down the team-sheet and I couldn’t see anyone that was going to be dropped except me.”So when I am selected I want to make myself as prominent as possible. I was not too happy about going in as nightwatchman to be honest. I think I’m a bit better than that now. But when I was out there I thought I’d better make the most of it and Friday was just top drawer.”Not surprisingly, he was a willing interviewee, which could not be said for Strauss, who declined the opportunity to discuss the 100 runs he has made in his five innings over the last three weeks or so. Not that there is a lot he could have said, other than the obvious. He was unfortunate to run into two identically excellent deliveries when Graham Onions dismissed him cheaply twice in the first of his three outings and was undone by another good one when Gurney removed him in the first innings here. It can happen.Perhaps Michael Vaughan was right to suggest he would have been better off in the nets, although this outing did at least enable him to reacquaint himself with conditions that did not excessively favour the ball. It was too good a surface, in the end, failing to deliver the help Nottinghamshire had hoped might have been there for Swann, the England offspinner, as they sought to secure a fourth win from six matches and cement their lead in Division One.But at least there were signs of improvement from Broad, who looked as out of sorts in the first innings here as he did at Old Trafford last week. “He bowled as well as he has so far,” Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said afterwards.”He is a bowler who needs overs under his belt to find his rhythm. Whereas someone like [James] Anderson is able to get it back right away, which comes with experience and age, Stuart needs to bowl. He has been a bit rusty but he felt he bowled better today and that can only hold him in good stead for next week.”Nottinghamshire sit out the next round of county matches, giving Warwickshire the chance to regain top place when they play Lancashire at Edgbaston from Wednesday onwards, and Newell recognises that he will have a selection dilemma when his side meets Sussex, starting on May 25, after Steven Mullaney scored half-centuries in both innings after taking one of the places vacated when James Taylor and Samit Patel were called up for England Lions.”I expect to have those two back and will have Adam Voges available for the first time, so there will be eight batsman vying for six places,” Newell said. “It is a difficult one. Steven lost a bit of confidence last season after being hit on the head but he played very well in this match and made a good case for himself.”

Edwards on the front foot for girls' cricket

Charlotte Edwards, the England Women’s captain, has said that a new initiative launched to increase opportunities for girls to take up cricket in school can help to provide the next generation of players for the national side.

Alan Gardner26-Apr-2012Charlotte Edwards, the England Women’s captain, has said that a new initiative launched to increase opportunities for girls to take up cricket in school can help to provide the next generation of players for the national side.Edwards is involved as a coach and mentor with Chance to Shine, the programme set up in 2005 by the Cricket Foundation charity to increase participation in cricket among children, and was at Lord’s on Wednesday for the launch of Girls on the Front Foot, which aims to raise £250,000 in support of coaching and awareness for girls’ cricket.”Definitely, the game needs girls coming through and it would be great to have someone who got into cricket that way reach the England team,” Edwards said. “It’s really good for the girls to meet England players at coaching sessions and then they can go and look us up on scorecards afterwards.”Edwards said that the initiative was important to help raise awareness of the game among girls, with several members of the England team combining coaching in schools with their training schedules. The Girls on the Front Foot board features women from business and sport, including Edwards, the ECB’s head of women’s cricket, Clare Connor, Tesco executive director Lucy Neville-Rolfe and Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar.Since its foundation, over 620,000 girls have participated in clubs run by Chance to Shine, with the number of girls playing cricket in school rising from 25,049 in 2006 to 156,577 in 2011.”I am delighted to be involved with the Chance to Shine girls’ board,” Edwards said. “It is amazing to see this collection of high-powered women come together for such a worthy cause. In my dual role as England captain and Chance to Shine coaching ambassador it is fantastic to go into schools around the country and see girls playing cricket.””I grew up on a potato farm and I’d probably still be there picking potatoes if it wasn’t for cricket. Now it’s so accessible for girls, you don’t have to stumble across a women’s pathway, there’s a very clear pathway for girls wanting to play cricket. But it’s more than that, we’re developing young people here and that’s just as important.”Despite her increased involvement with Chance to Shine, Edwards, 32, has not yet turned her thoughts to retirement and hopes to lead England in regaining the World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka later this year. England are also the Women’s World Cup holders, with the next tournament to be held in India next year. “While I’m still happy with my game, I will definitely continue playing,” Edwards said.

Auckland edged out by Duckworth-Lewis

A round-up of the latest matches from New Zealand’s Ford Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Dec-2011Rain affected all the three games, ensuring that two were decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method while the third was washed out. Canterbury handed Auckland their first loss of the tournament as the hosts ended just six runs short of the par score when rain forced an early finish at Colin Maiden Park.Gareth Hopkins and Colin Munro had brought Auckland’s chase back on track after they had been reduced to 49 for 4. After a brisk 82-run stand, though, Munro was stumped off Rob Nicol for 53 with the score on 131 in the 26th over. Not only did his dismissal increase the par score, it also tied Auckland down, with only seven coming off the next 16 deliveries before the rain came down. Auckland ended on 138 for 5 with the par score being 144 at that stage.Brendon Diamanti had earlier smashed an unbeaten 102 from 79 balls to lift Canterbury to 238 for 9 after they lost regular wickets throughout their innings. Diamanti hammered seven sixes and four fours while the expensive Michael Bates finished with four wickets.Northern Districts won their first game of the tournament, beating Wellington by 27 runs at the Basin Reserve. James Marshall anchored the Northern Districts’ innings with his unbeaten 110 and added 103 for the second wicket with his twin brother Hamish Marshall (64). Scott Styris added an aggressive fifty as well before Corey Anderson took the game away from Wellington with a late assault. Coming in at the fall of the fifth wicket at 222 in the 42nd over, Anderson clubbed six sixes and four fours in surging to an unbeaten 74 off only 31 balls. Northern Districts ended on a stiff 327 despite the efforts of Andy McKay and Luke Woodcock who took five wickets between them at four an over. Michael Papps got Wellington going with a fifty but they lost too many wickets at the other end. They were 221 for 6 after 38 overs, 27 short of the par score, when rain ended the game. The match between Central Districts and Otago in Nelson was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Tanto Marlos quanto Dourado ainda devem atuações convincentes.

Childhood dream comes true for Khawaja

As a boy Usman Khawaja waited for the SCG gates to open so he could watch his heroes for free. On Monday he will have another priceless experience there when he plays his first Test as the injured Ricky Ponting’s replacement at No 3.Khawaja, who will become the first Muslim to receive a baggy green, moved to Australia from Pakistan when he was three and as he grew up, his family couldn’t afford match tickets. So he would hang around at the entrance until the gatemen let him in for a peek at Steve Waugh and Co.When he enters the ground over the next week he will be treated like royalty by the home fans and as a target by England. “It’s been a childhood dream for me,” he said at the SCG. “Ever since I can remember I wanted to play for Australia.”Khawaja, 24, is a graceful, wristy left-hander who has impressed team-mates with his calm maturity. He is already a qualified pilot and is now in charge of navigating Australia from first-drop in an Ashes Test. Not since Justin Langer in 1992-93 has a debutant stepped out at No.3.”Ricky is a legend of a cricketer, a legend of a bloke,” Khawaja said. “I’ve only met him a few times, but he’s made me feel like I’ve been part of the team when I really haven’t.”He’s the kind of guy that if he told me to jump off a bridge I probably would, I’d follow him anywhere. I’m not here to fill Ricky Ponting’s shoes, I’m going to go out there and try and do the best I can. To replace 12,000 runs is a big feat and I still haven’t scored any.”Khawaja was on standby for Ponting in Melbourne and was also called late into the squad for the opening game in Brisbane when Michael Clarke had a bad back. He started the season well for New South Wales, scoring a double-century, and leads the Sheffield Shield run list with 598 at 74.75.Despite his attractive overall record – he averages 51.70 in 27 first-class games – he hasn’t posted a first-class hundred since his 214, although he has produced some useful half-centuries. The past four Tests have shown that Australia need big scores from their top six to survive against England and it is a tough ask for a debutant to provide such leadership in an ailing outfit. Whatever Khawaja does, it will be another memorable visit to the SCG.

World Cup or bust, says Jacob Oram

Jacob Oram has said that participating in the 2011 World Cup is motivating him to continue his injury-ridden career but failure to make the squad for the tournament could prompt him to retire

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Dec-2010Jacob Oram, the New Zealand allrounder, has said that the hope of participating in the 2011 World Cup is motivating him to continue his injury-ridden career but failure to make the squad for the tournament could prompt him to retire. Oram is presently recovering from a knee surgery he had in September.”I remember talking to Shane Bond prior to his retirement, when he had that abdominal strain, and he told me that, for him, that was the one injury too many,” Oram told the . “I think I’m at that point and in that mindset right now.”I’m very highly motivated to go to the World Cup and if it wasn’t on I may have already hung the boots up by now. It’s a very big carrot for me and it may also be the swan song of my career. If that’s to be the case, I’d like to give it everything to try and make it.”Oram’s career has been interrupted by injuries to his knee, back, calf and Achilles tendon. In August, he suffered a recurrence of a patella-tendon injury during the tri-series in Sri Lanka and had surgery for it on September 2. He will not be fully fit in time for New Zealand’s Twenty20 matches against Pakistan before the year ends though he hoped to ease back into action around Christmas for Central Districts during the HRV Cup, New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition.
