BCB to investigate BPL fixing allegations

BCB president Nazmul Hassan has confirmed that a Bangladesh player was questioned by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) officers last week. There will be a meeting between the BCB and the ACSU on Monday, which will be the first meeting between the two to discuss suspected match-fixing and spot-fixing allegations in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).According to reports, the ACSU have been investigating a number of BPL matches involving Dhaka Gladiators, in particular three games which they lost. The Gladiators went on to win the 2013 tournament.Hassan said he had talked to the Bangladesh batsman Mohammed Ashraful. “He (Ashraful) told me that the ACSU talked to him and he told them everything,” Hassan said. “Whatever he knew, whatever’s the truth, he can’t disclose these things because of the ACSU’S bindings. I think what Ashraful has said is not the bigger matter. The bigger deal is the ACSU’s report and what kind of decision we take [in light of the investigation].”On Monday, we will have our first sitting with them [ACSU] after the investigation. I will come to know then what’s going on. Regarding the BPL, spot-fixing or match-fixing, everything depends on their investigation. Because we haven’t done any investigation of our own we gave the responsibility to them. Saying anything before that is difficult.”Hassan also stressed on punishing the parties that are found guilty of corruption, but he doubted one clause in the ICC’s anti-corruption policy which he said states that a team that loses a game for strategic reasons can escape punishment.”We have to know what grade of offence this is. The ICC has its grading. I heard that if a team throws the match for strategic reasons that won’t be a fault. So after listening to this I was shocked. In my opinion that’s match-fixing, but the ACSU doesn’t consider it. I need to know the laws properly. We will consult our legal advisors after finding out what the report is. We will give a stern decision.”If franchises are responsible obviously they will get punished. If I run a team then the team is mine, I take my players, I train them so I have a big influence on the team. Whether the players agree or not [with the franchise’s decision], they might have to agree. So what happened and who is responsible, we need to figure that out. So did I do the wrongdoing out of no hope or was it out of my own wish? We need to find this out. But obviously everybody will get punished.”Hassan, however, said he did not believe the BPL would “close down because of this incident.” He said if the BCB could “handle this situation this time and punish the ones who deserve to be punished then I am sure that BPL won’t face this problem in the future.”

Champions Trophy is crunch time for Cardiff

Alan Hamer, Glamorgan’s chief executive, has admitted that Cardiff’s role as one of the host venues for the Champions Trophy “raises the stakes” for county and country

Alan Gardner07-Apr-2013

Cardiff is one of three venues for the Champions Trophy•Glamorgan CCC

Alan Hamer, Glamorgan’s chief executive, has admitted that Cardiff’s role as one of the host venues for the Champions Trophy “raises the stakes” for county and country and that their success or otherwise will have a direct impact on the SWALEC Stadium’s prospects as a venue for international cricket in Wales.Cardiff is up against Birmingham and London as one of three grounds hosting the June 6-23 event. While three of the five games at each of The Oval and Edgbaston sold out in the first round of ticketing, only one of Cardiff’s – the opening fixture between India and South Africa – did so, with sales in the other matches, which include England’s group game against New Zealand, described as average. A second, limited batch of tickets for all Champions Trophy matches, including India v Pakistan at Edgbaston, will go on sale on Monday morning at 10.30am BST (09.30 GMT).With the next four-year cycle of international match allocations in England to include the World Cup and Ashes in 2019, as well as the proposed World Test Championship in 2017, Hamer believes an impressive Champions Trophy showing will help state Cardiff’s case. While not a ground as storied as the likes of Lord’s or Headingley, Hamer emphasised the importance of continuing to create that history and wants a “sports hungry” Welsh public to play their part, with the eyes of the cricket world watching. Welsh cricket is on a charm offensive.”This is the first time we’ve had a global event here so it raises the stakes, not just for us but for the country as a whole because the TV audience isn’t just UK-based, it’s worldwide,” Hamer said. “And it gives an opportunity for people overseas to understand a bit more about Wales and Welsh cricket. It is important to us because if this tournament goes well then it puts us in a strong position when it comes to staging future global events.”We’re still a relatively new ground in terms of history of international matches. The only way we’re going to increase our ‘database’ is by staging more games. Other grounds have a lot more history and a lot more games than us. We’ve only got one Test match in the current four-year cycle, the 2015 Ashes, which is probably right, and at the end of the cycle we’ll be in a far stronger position in terms of support base.”While Cardiff may well be judged in comparison with attendances in London and Birmingham when measuring success, Hamer said that any rivalry was friendly. “All the venues are trying to work together to support their respective matches, so as well as us doing well here, we need The Oval and Edgbaston to do well as well. It’s good competition,” he said.Tickets for the Champions Trophy – which is being held for the final time – are priced as low as £20 for adults sitting in the family sections, with the most expensive being the £60 “Gold” seats for the final at Edgbaston. Strategies for Cardiff include targeting the city’s student population and invoking the successful sporting events held in Wales in recent years, from the Ryder Cup to multiple FA Cup finals and the 2009 Ashes Test.Although there is the perennial competition from rugby and football for attention, there is a sense that the impending arrival of the world’s best cricketers in Wales will catch the public’s imagination. The tournament will open in Cardiff, with a ceremony at the medieval castle in the city centre, while teams preparing between matches will be based in nearby Newport, using local facilities.Glamorgan will hand over control of their SWALEC Stadium – which will be rebranded as the Cardiff Wales Stadium – to the ICC for the duration of the tournament, meaning ticket revenue goes back to the governing body, but thronging crowds are likely to increase the “secondary spend” on food and drink, to go with the venue hire fee. “It is very much financially in our interest to do well,” Hamer said. “We’re incentivised to get as many bums on seats as possible.”

PBKS openers Prabhsimran and Arya rise on IPL 2025 Orange Cap table after fifties against DC

Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya are not in the top five on the IPL 2025 Orange Cap leaderboard yet, but are closing in on the top run-scorers of the season

Orange Cap table

Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, who have formed such a potent opening combination for PBKS, were the only batters in action on Thursday, putting together a 122-run stand before Arya fell. The game ended immediately after that. But Prabhsimran’s unbeaten 50 from 28 balls took him up to No. 6, while Arya’s 70 in 34 balls lifted him to No. 8.Not much changed around them, with Suryakumar Yadav (MI, 510 runs), B Sai Sudharsan (GT, 509 runs), Shubman Gill (GT, 508 runs), Virat Kohli (RCB, 505 runs) and Jos Buttler (GT, 500 runs) making up the top five. Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR, 473 runs) is between the two PBKS openers at No. 7.Noor Ahmad now has two four-wicket hauls in IPL 2025•BCCI

Purple Cap table

T Natarajan, playing his second match of the season for DC – both abandoned; the first, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), for rain – picked up the only wicket to fall, that of Arya.Obviously no change on the Purple Cap list then.CSK’s left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad, who picked up hos second four-wicket haul on Wednesday, is level with GT’s Prasidh Krishna at the top of the Purple Cap table. Both have 20 wickets, but Prasidh retains the Purple Cap thanks to his better economy rate – (7.65 vs 8.02) and average (16.45 vs 17.25).RCB’s Josh Hazlewood is third with 18 wickets, the same as MI’s Trent Boult. Again, Hazlewood has a better economy rate and average.KKR’s Varun Chakravarthy has jumped to fifth place after his 2 for 18 against CSK. He now has 17 wickets from 12 matches now.You can also take a look at what the ESPNcricinfo MVP table looks like at this stage. Here are some other IPL 2025 tables.

Borthwick boosts Durham hopes

Durham have given themselves the opportunity of claiming their first County Championship win of the season after their seamers led a fightback on the second day against Sussex at Arundel.

19-Jul-2012
ScorecardScott Borthwick made a vital half-century in the middle order•Getty ImagesDurham have given themselves the opportunity of claiming their first County Championship win of the season after their seamers led a fightback on the second day against Sussex at Arundel. After a half-century from Scott Borthwick had helped them to 231 and only their ninth batting bonus point of the season. They then reduced Sussex to 59 for 3 when Calum Thorp claimed two wickets in 12 balls. But Mike Yardy and Murray Goodwin used all their experience to steady Sussex who closed on 100 for 3.A subtle shift in the contest came after an unlikely ninth-wicket stand between Borthwick and Mitch Claydon of 55 in 10 overs. Borthwick, who was named in England’s provisional squad for the World Twenty20 on Wednesday, scored his first Championship half-century of the season off 68 balls with eight fours and timed his strokes well on a two-paced surface.Chris Nash, bowling his occasional off-breaks, made the breakthrough when Borthwick was leg before playing back and Claydon followed three balls later for 15.A combination of accurate Sussex bowling and a sluggish pitch meant Durham’s run rate never climbed above three an over with Steve Magoffin the outstanding bowler on show with 3 for 28 from 22 overs, including nine maidens. He struck in the fifth over of the day when Durham captain Paul Collingwood was caught behind nibbling at a ball which left him but Phil Mustard joined Dale Benkenstein in a stand of 60 in 26 overs which frustrated the Sussex attack.Monty Panesar broke the partnership just before lunch when Mustard clipped the ball into the hands of short leg and shortly after the resumption Benkenstein’s 200 minute vigil ended on 43 when he mis-timed a pull at Magoffin and was caught at mid-wicket. That made Durham 170 for 7 and they added just five runs before Luke Wright returned to the attack and immediately had Thorp taken at extra cover off a mis-timed drive. However, Sussex’s hopes of wrapping up the innings quickly were frustrated in particular by Borthwick who eased to his first Championship half-century of the season with six boundaries. Chris Rushworth, making only his third Championship appearance of the season, began with four maidens and also picked up the wicket of Nash who was leg-before to a ball that nipped back.Thorp then struck twice after tea, defeating Joe Gatting’s push before producing a beauty which left Luke Wells off the pitch and clipped his off stump after the left-hander had struck seven fours in his 41.

Lack of runs 'frustrating' – Strauss

Andrew Strauss retains the belief he can return to being a force in Test cricket despite again failing to convert two starts in Galle

Andrew McGlashan29-Mar-2012

Andrew Strauss: “My job is to score runs and I haven’t done that as much as I would have liked over the last 12 months”•AFP

Andrew Strauss retains the belief he can return to being a force in Test cricket despite again failing to convert two starts in Galle as England slumped to a fourth straight defeat.Strauss contributed 26 and 27 in England’s two innings during their 75-run loss but insisted he feels in good form. He hasn’t scored a Test hundred since Brisbane at the start of the 2010-11 Ashes – now 16 Tests ago – and the pressure has been increased by the manner of his dismissals. In the first innings he tried to sweep a delivery that was too full and in the second whipped Rangana Herath to short midwicket when trying to go over the top.”At the moment it is frustrating me as much as anyone,” he said. “I’m hitting the ball nicely and feel in good form but you’re judged on your performances and I’ve not performed well enough. Hopefully I will put it right next week.”Sometimes it goes with the territory and you go through periods where you can’t kick on for whatever reason and then you get through it, release a barrier and you get some big scores in a row.”Strauss is now 35 but strongly resisted suggestions that time was catching up with his batting. “If you keep getting to 30 then I don’t think it is a terminal decline, unless you’re very unfit, which I don’t think is the case with me,” he said. “My job in the side is to score runs and I haven’t done that as much as I would have liked over the last 12 months or so, but I want to put it right next week.”He has only been dropped once during his Test career and that was when he missed the previous tour of Sri Lanka in 2007, having failed to recover from a difficult 2006-07 Ashes series. This time his position comes with the added weight of the captaincy but, understandably midway through a series, talk of his future was off the agenda.”Questions about my position are just not something I’m going to answer in the middle of the series. My focus is very much on winning the next game and it would be wrong to think of anything else.”Collectively, too, England continue to struggle and have posted 300 just once in four Tests this year. Again it was the first innings that proved really costly, slumping to 192 and conceding a 125-run lead to Sri Lanka. Strauss wanted to offer up something positive after Jonathan Trott’s second-innings hundred gave the team hope, but it wasn’t an easy task.”It is hard to say we’re making progress having lost four in a row,” he said. “I think individually people’s gameplans against spin have come on but we haven’t showed it out in the middle. If you want to win Test matches you need to get runs on the board and we haven’t done that. In the fourth innings you can understand the odd dismissal but we had less of an excuse in our first innings.”Another potential headache is an injury to Stuart Broad who was suffering from a tight right calf on the fourth day. He was clearly limping during his brief second innings but England are waiting to do a further assessment.Broad entered the Test having picked up an injury to his left ankle slipping on the boundary rope before the first warm-up match. He was passed as fully fit for the match but was slightly below his best, bowling eight no-balls – one of which cost England the wicket of Prasanna Jayawardene on the third day when Sri Lanka’s lead was a slightly more manageable 292.Edited by Alan Gardner

Goa player says Asnodkar did not want to chase target

The pressure on suspended Goa batsman Swapnil Asnodkar to explain his actions after aborting a fourth-innings run chase against Maharashtra intensified on Thursday after a team-mate, Abhishek Raut, submitted a letter stating that Asnodkar had asked him not to go for the potentially gettable target in their Ranji Trophy Plate group match played at Porvorim last week.”Raut has said that he was told not to chase by Asnodkar immediately into the chase of the small target,” Goa Cricket Association secretary, Prasad Phaterpekar, told ESPNcricinfo.Asnodkar, Goa’s stand-in captain for the match, was suspended for two games for his unilateral decision to call off the chase as team management had explicitly decided they would go for the win during the change of innings. On Thurday, Asnodkar submitted a letter to the association explaining his actions, but Phaterpekar said it had not been opened yet.”We have started our internal investigations. Swapnil has sent his apology-cum-explanation on his act on November 9. We have not opened his letter yet. “We are taking the matter seriously and will place all our finding in front of the managing committee once the papers are ready and the investigations are complete.”Asnodkar’s troubles began on the final day of Goa’s opening round game against Maharashtra. After debutant Ganeshraj Narvekar claimed a five-wicket haul to bundle Maharashtra out for for 91 in their second innings, Goa were left needing 130 runs to get from 19 overs. Before starting their innings, the hosts decided that they would go for the win. Asnodkar walked out with a new opening partner in Amit Yadav, a hard-hitting batsman who was pushed up ahead of the regular opener Vaibhav Naik to help kickstart the chase. But when Raut walked in after the early fall of Yadav, Asnodkar informed him to go slow. He then played out the sixth over, eventually the final over the match, as a maiden before telling Maharashtra that Goa were not going for the target and the teams agreed to call off the game.In the first response from the BCCI about the case, Rajeev Shukla, currently IPL governing council chairman and member on BCCI’s marketing committee, said, “The BCCI has not come to know of any match-fixing (during Goa–Maharasthra game).” Shukla, an MP, spoke to reporters outside Parliament on Thursday and said, “There are no cases of match-fixing here as we have adopted strict measures to curb the menace. All the Indian players are clean.”
