Been class this season: Leeds fans are excited by Mallik Wilks ahead of new season

[ad_pod ]

A number of Leeds United fans are excited by what Mallik Wilks could potentially bring to the first team from next season onwards.

Wilks came through the youth system at Leeds but has only made one first-team appearance for the club, which came against Sutton United in the FA Cup in January 2017.

However, the attacker has picked up valuable first-team experience during loan spells with Accrington Stanley, Grimsby Town and Doncaster Rovers.

During the 2018-19 season, Wilks scored 16 times in 55 appearances for Doncaster – including 14 in League One.

As it stands, the 20-year-old will return to the Whites for pre-season with the view to earning a spot in the first team during the 2018-19 campaign.

It remains to be seen whether Wilks has the ability to contribute at Championship level.

But a whole host of Leeds supporters are excited by the winger’s potential.

Man United fans suggest Lukaku swap deal

[ad_pod ]

Romelu Lukaku’s troubled time at Manchester United could be nearing an end with Inter Milan interested in the Belgian’s services, although United fans on Twitter think the club should use Inter’s interest to negotiate a deal that would see Mauro Icardi head the other way.

Inter Milan are preparing to embark on a new era with Antonio Conte at the helm and according to Sky Sports, the ex-Chelsea manager has set his sights on Lukaku.

A promising debut season at Old Trafford gave way to a frustrating second campaign as Lukaku found the net just 12 times in 32 Premier League appearances, while the striker saw his place in the team questioned at points in the season.

Icardi, meanwhile, endured a troubled season of his own as he was stripped of the Inter captaincy for disciplinary and behavioural reasons.

The Argentine marksman scored 11 Serie A goals in 28 appearances just one season after notching 29 league goals and reports have stated that he has no interest in signing a new contract at the San Siro.

With both strikers struggling for form and popularity a swap could benefit both sides and many United fans are eager for a deal that would send Lukaku to Italy and Icardi the other way.

Sheffield Wednesday must look to keep Lucas Joao rather than selling

It was bound to happen at some point right? After their first loss since January, Wednesday fans must not be saddened but, instead, think of how good their side has been in recent weeks.

Losses are inevitable whoever you are and although Steve Bruce has done a terrific job convincing fans otherwise, even the Owls must lose at some point.

With a loss against Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday must now focus on finishing the season strong, whether that’s somehow sneaking into the play-offs or getting better prepared for next season. By which that means that Wednesday could look to give game-time to those who are deserving and are set to stay beyond the campaign, rather than others.

Although Lucas Joao hasn’t played since February and historically has a history suffering injuries, Wednesday should still look to keep the forward who is a nuisance on his day.

Joao, (who is valued at £1.8 million on Transfermarkt) is reportedly (according to the Sun via HITC) a player who Sheffield Wednesday may look to get rid of this summer and understandably so due to his injury record.

Yet putting that to one side, you will also discover that Lucas Joao has nine goals this season and it has to be said that when fit, Joao is a player you would want in your team. Unlike their current striking options like Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu, Joao on his day is a goalscorer that can be relied upon and is a great option in the Championship.

The Owls need to ensure they improve rather than decline this summer and selling Lucas Joao would be a bad move considering how good he can be.

Do you agree that Lucas Joao deserves to stay at Sheffield Wednesday? If not, why not? Let us know!

Manchester United fans on Twitter unhappy after Sergio Busquets avoids red card

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Manchester United fans on Twitter have been raging about a refereeing decision made during their team’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Barcelona on Wednesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils fell to a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford after Luke Shaw’s early own-goal but things could have turned out differently had the man in the middle, Gianluca Rocchi, made the right decision in the first half.

Despite the Barca midfielder seemingly committing a total of four offences before the break, all of which would have been punished with a yellow card by most referees, Sergio Busquets got away with just one booking.

The seemingly bookable incidents included a series of cynical fouls and even a totally unpunished handball in his own team’s penalty area, Rocchi not deciding on any occasion to send the 30-year-old for an early shower.

This was much to the disdain of unhappy United supporters on Twitter as they cried out for Busquets’ sending off, calling VAR “a shambles,” musing that the deep-lying central man was now on “3 yellows,” and using the phrase “Uefalona” to suggest bias towards the European giants by the footballing governing body on the continent.

Opinion: Rangers should use Southampton’s Arfield interest to land Charlie Austin

[ad_pod ]

Reports claim Southampton want to sign Scott Arfield this summer, so could Rangers work it to their advantage?

What’s the story?

Well, according to The Daily Mail, Saints have been impressed by Arfield’s form this season and hold a “concrete interest” in the Gers ace.

Saints have already had success bringing the likes of Steven Davis to the Premier League from Scotland, and the report claims they see Arfield as a risk-free investment around the £3m mark.

However, while £3m would provide a big boost to Steven Gerrard’s transfer kitty, the Gers should change course and request a swap deal for none other than Charlie Austin.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Goals goals goals

From the outside looking in, it seems baffling that Austin doesn’t start every game for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. The 29 year-old recorded an epic 18 goals and five assists in his first season in the Premier League back in 2013-14, and even despite being hampered by injuries has managed around a one-in-two ratio ever since.

And yet, the ex-QPR man is staring at a summer exit from St. Mary’s, having started just 11 league matches this season and The Telegraph reporting back in January that he has no future with the club.

With just one year left on his contract and a pretty poor injury history, the goal machine’s value will not be much higher than Arfield’s, so could the Gers work a swap deal?

Landing Austin would mean the club could survive without Alfredo Morelos if he is sold, or even use the two together in what would surely be a deadly partnership.

Rangers fans, what do you think? Would you give up Arfield to land Austin? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Lee Bowyer reveals key to Joe Aribo signing permanently

[ad_pod ]

Charlton’s consecutive wins over Portsmouth then Burton have ensured they are in a good place heading into the final stretch of the season in terms of securing promotion to the Championship and Joe Aribo has been crucial to that.

The midfielder scored – brilliantly – in the victory over Pompey while also scooping the man of the match award for his all-round display. Then, just three days later, he put in another solid 90 minutes as his team ran out winners again.

The Addicks are surely keen to keep the 22-year-old tied down for the foreseeable future, with him showing he’s clearly ready to play the second tier or higher, although they will have to get him to sign new terms – the Londoner’s current contract expires in the summer.

Lee Bowyer has spoken about the talented midfielder’s future at The Valley this week, saying:

“Myself and Steve Gallen [head of recruitment] had a good chat with Joe on Thursday. Joe [Aribo] wants to sign and stay.

“It’s just a matter of coming to an agreement with his agent, that’s what it is going to come down to.

“Joe knows this is a good place for him to be. He knows this is a good club. That’s what he said to us – and that he wants to keep learning from us. It’s obvious Joe’s agent has got a job to do, but we just have to keep letting Joe know how important he is to us. It’s also about telling him how important it is for his career that he keeps playing games.

“We need to make an agreement with his agent and we’re trying – we’re trying so hard. If you are asking me, I think he will sign.”

Clearly Aribo is very close to putting pen to paper on a new deal at SE7 but, as is often the case in the modern game, his agent’s demands could prove to be a sticking point.

After the performance the Addicks star put in at the weekend, Charlton fans will be thrilled to learn that everything is being done to retain Aribo’s services beyond the summer.

Injury News: Mamadou Sakho set to miss Crystal Palace’s clash with Man United

[ad_pod ]

On Tuesday Roy Hodgson provided an injury update on his squad and revealed that Mamadou Sakho will miss the clash against Manchester United on Wednesday as his struggles continue – the Frenchman limped off in the first half of the win over Leicester at the weekend.

What’s the update?

Hodgson had been hopeful of the 29-year-old’s availability for the midweek battle with the Red Devils, saying after their emphatic 4-1 victory on Saturday:

“He [Sakho] missed a lot of training and didn’t play against Doncaster Rovers as a result of feeling the knee in the West Ham game so he was out for a week having treatment, but he trained all of this week in the lead up to this game.

“But obviously he felt the knee again today.

“So we will have to reassess it on Monday and hope for the best.”

However, far from ‘the best’ news awaited the Premier League’s oldest-ever manager, who has now confirmed that assessment of the defender’s knee is ongoing and that he will not be in contention for the visit of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co.

Sakho isn’t the only one

Fortunately for the Selhurst Park outfit, United’s injury woes are far greater than theirs and the 13-time Premier League champions will be without up to ten players for the game, including Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

The lightning-quick duo have become crucial to Norwegian Solskjaer’s style of play but he will likely be forced, now, to deploy the considerably less mobile Romelu Lukaku up front – this will surely be of huge relief to Scott Dann, who would have been totally mismatched against the aforementioned duo’s pace.

The veteran centre-back replaced 29-year-old Sakho at the heart of defence against Leicester and will likely continue to deputise next time out.  The former Blackburn man will fancy himself far more in a physical battle than one of speed – he is surely one of the division’s slowest players.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

The 32-year-old might not be as quality a defender as Sakho, but he is a force to be reckoned with in the air – United have scored 11 goals from set-pieces this season and Palace have conceded 10, so Dann’s heading ability in defence of corners will be crucial.

Sakho’s injury is hardly a blessing in disguise for Palace but there is at least one positive to be taken from Dann replacing the former Liverpool man at centre-half.

Tottenham fans react to fresh update on Vedat Muriqi

Having missed out on signing a back-up striker to step up in Harry Kane’s absence, Tottenham’s number one priority in this summer transfer window will surely be bringing in a new centre-forward.

Reports in recent days and weeks had suggested the north London side had earmarked Fenerbache marksman Vedat Muriqi as a potential transfer target, and now, according to Turkish publication, Fanatik (via Sport Witness), the Kosovo international dreams of playing under Jose Mourinho.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Muriqi has enjoyed a stellar season for Fenerbahce this season, netting 15 goals in just 28 games across all competitions, as well as providing six assists too.

And after hearing about the latest update on their potential swoop for the 26-year-old, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

One Spurs fan in particular suggested that Muriqi could finally be the man to replace Fernando Llorente.

Given his style of play and profile, there’s no doubting signing Muriqi would be a piece of smart business from Spurs this summer.

All the north London side need is a reliable back-up to Kane, who can step-in to his shoes when needed and offer something different to their current attack.

Muriqi fits that bill to an absolute tee.

Mark Harrison is expecting Aston Villa’s Louie Barry to become an outstanding No.9

Aston Villa confirmed the signing of the young starlet Louie Barry, who joined the Premier League side from Barcelona of all places, during the January transfer window.

The 16-year-old spent six months with the Catalan giants, following his transfer from West Bromwich Albion in July 2019.

[ad_pod ]

Unfortunately for him, he never managed to settle down in Spain, making just ten appearances for the club’s youth teams before moving to Villa.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the young prodigy will be given any first-team chances in the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign as he is currently registered with their U18 squad.

Still, the expectations are clearly very as Barry has already received a glowing endorsement from academy manager Mark Harrison, who spoke to Villa TV following his transfer from the Blaugrana, as quoted by Goal:

“He can be an outstanding No.9 for this football club.”

11 words which underline just how high he is expected to rise.

Of course, that is not the only thing Harrison highlighted in his interview but it’s enough to show that Villa view him as a future star of the forward line.

The young centre-forward definitely has a lot to boast in his repertoire, as Harrison also mentioned in the same interview, once again relayed by Goal:

“He is still a very young man but as he’s developed, he’s always been one player that you always recognise as having outstanding attributes. He’s got a fantastic mentality, he’s desperate to do well for this football club. He’s really driven.”

It remains to be seen whether he can live up to the hype but one thing is for sure – the Midlands outfit were certainly wise to snap him up at this stage in his development.
