Bopara's wait is almost over

Ravi Bopara’s return to England’s Test team will be confirmed on Sunday when he is slotted in for the No. 6 role against South Africa

Ravi Bopara’s return to England’s Test team will be confirmed on Sunday when he is slotted in for the No. 6 role against South Africa. He will be the one significant change from the team which took on West Indies earlier this season by replacing Jonny Bairstow in the middle order.Bopara’s form in the ODI series against Australia, where he scored 182 runs and claimed four useful wickets, confirmed he is primed for a return to the Test side after a frustrating period where injuries have curtailed his opportunities. He was set to make a comeback in Sri Lanka after Eoin Morgan was dropped but picked up a side strain which prevented him from bowling and so Samit Patel was preferred over him. Then, at the start of this season, he injured his thigh which ruled him out of the series against West Indies. That opened the door for Yorkshire’s Bairstow, but he struggled in the three Tests and made just 38 runs and has not had a huge amount of batting since. He returned to Championship action this week and collected a first-ball duck against Hampshire. The other area of debate for the selectors will be who takes the role of third fast bowler behind James Anderson and Stuart Broad. England’s new-ball pair missed the last Test against West Indies when they were both rested but will return to spearhead the attack for the main event of the season. In the first two Tests against West Indies they were accompanied by Tim Bresnan who was Man of the Match at Trent Bridge after a destructive spell of reverse swing on the third evening sealed the series for England. He currently has a Test bowling average of 26.09 (alongside his batting figure of 40.22) and will be tough to dislodge, but Steven Finn’s performances in the recent one-day matches have made a very strong case.In the four completed matches against Australia, Finn took eight wickets at 19.37 including 4 for 37 at Chester-le-Street. He played the final Test against West Indies when Broad and Anderson were rested but was out-bowled on that occasion by Graham Onions who is the other fast bowler in contention. However, it may be that Onions does not even find a place in this squad such are England’s resources. There are a couple of lingering injury concerns with Bresnan and Graeme Swann having both recently been rested due to elbow problems. Swann missed the last two ODIs against Australia, and did not play for Nottinghamshire against Middlesex, while Bresnan has not played since the fourth ODI at Chester-le-Street.Earlier this week Andy Flower said: “Swann and Bresnan have ongoing elbow problems. Our medical staff believe they will be fit and available for selection for the first Test but it’s a strenuous exercise being a bowler playing international cricket.”They play all three forms of the game so that’s why Swann missed a big part of the one-day series and why we rested Bresnan for the last match at Old Trafford.”The impact of an injury to Swann is one area where this England side have yet to be tested. His absence would leave a vast hole to fill as he provides both attacking and defensive skills, which have been key to England being able to employ a four-man attack with such success.Should cover – or even a replacement – be needed at any stage it would probably come from either Monty Panesar or James Tredwell instead of any of the young spinners in county cricket such as Danny Briggs, Scott Borthwick or Simon Kerrigan who are still some way short of Test quality.Panesar made a successful return against Pakistan in the UAE earlier this year, but did himself no favours with a poor fielding display at Galle and Tredwell, who took 2 for 23 in the last ODI against Australia, may well be the preferred option. This, though, is not the series where England want to test that theory.Probable squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Matt Prior, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Steven Finn

Malinga signs for Middlesex

Middlesex have signed Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lanka fast bowler, as their second overseas player for this season’s Friends Life t20

ESPNcricinfo staff10-May-2012Middlesex have signed Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lanka fast bowler, as their second overseas player for this season’s Friends Life t20. The move, which was first reported by ESPNcricinfo, means one of the world’s premier Twenty20 bowlers will be performing in England’s domestic competition.Malinga, 28, currently has the second-highest wickets tally in the 2012 IPL, with 20 from nine appearances for Mumbai Indians. He is due to join up with Middlesex after playing for Sri Lanka in their one-day international and T20I series against Pakistan in June, meaning he will miss the opening three games of the FLt20.In 106 T20 matches, Malinga has taken 151 wickets at an average of 16.40, with an economy of 6.53 runs per over. He has previously played in England for Kent.Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said: “We are all naturally thrilled about the prospect of a player of Lasith’s talent coming to the club. In T20 cricket every county is looking for a bowler that provides their attack with variety, the ability to bowl during Powerplays and at the death, basically something different from the norm and in Lasith we will have the best in the world.”In 2011 we had a disappointing T20 campaign and we are looking for the players to react positively and improve on last season’s performances this summer. The addition of Lasith can only help us achieve this goal.”Edited by Alan Gardner

Bresnan injury opens door for Finn

Tim Bresnan has been ruled out of England’s first tour match which will mean a chance to impress for either Steven Finn or Chris Tremlett

Success in sport is often attributed to discipline, dedication and determination but, so often, it’s blind luck that makes the crucial contribution. So it could prove for Steven Finn or Chris Tremlett. Both travelled to the UAE knowing they could well spend several weeks doing little more than providing net bowling for their colleagues. Yet, after Tim Bresnan was ruled out of the warm-up match against ICC Combined Associate and Affiliate XI, one of Finn or Tremlett has an excellent opportunity to stake a persuasive claim for a Test place. It would be premature to completely discount Bresnan as a possibility for the first Test. Andrew Strauss declared himself “hopeful” that the Yorkshireman would be “ready for the second warm-up [match].” But, with only one three-day game to come before three back-to-back Tests, it would something of a gamble to select Bresnan as one of England’s three pace bowlers. That could well leave Finn and Tremlett competing for one place. While Tremlett has a fine record since his return to the Test side, there is a sense that Finn is the rising power within English cricket. Not only did he provide a rare beacon of joy amid England’s limited-overs thrashing in India but, aged just 22, he’s already the quickest bowler in the squad. He’s raw, certainly, but has all the attributes to carve out a fine career at the top level.Tremlett, meanwhile, is struggling with a sore eye. While Strauss dismissed that of “no great concern”, it would be typical of Tremlett’s ill-fortune if such an unavoidable incident should thwart him. He’s previously been sidelined by a tendon cut in a freak washing-up accident and a lung punctured by a misplaced acupuncture needle. While the cynics have long criticised Tremlett’s attitude and commitment, the truth is he’s simply enjoyed little luck. There’s also an interesting sub-plot to this match. Among the opposition is the Ireland and Warwickshire fast bowler Boyd Rankin. After a domestic season in which Marcus Trescothick rated him the best fast bowler he faced, Rankin has forced his way into the England Lions squad and knows that a strong performance here will take him even closer to the Test squad. It’s a prospect that will be viewed with bitter-sweet phlegmatism by Irish cricket lovers. In the longer-term, George Dockrell, a 19-year-old left-arm spinner with Somerset, is another who could follow the same route. They are not the only ones with special incentive, however. The ICC side are itching to show the strength of Associate and Affiliate cricket and feel that a good game will maintain pressure on the ICC to provide greater opportunities for the non-Test nations. Rankin, for example, has argued this current experiment could be continued. “There is room for an Associate team playing Test cricket. A Combined ICC team is more than capable of playing against the best sides in the world,” he said. It’s an intriguing thought.England, meanwhile, will be happy to return to competitive cricket after an unusually long break. With just two three-day games in which to prepare for the Test series – a far cry from the preparation they enjoyed going into the Ashes – they know they need to hit the ground running. In this match, each first innings will be limited to a maximum 100 overs and there will not be an opportunity to utilise batsmen or bowlers from outside the selected XI as is sometimes the case with these warm-up matches.Much as England and Pakistan may wish to move on from the spot-fixing debacle, its shadow will linger over this tour. The trial of the former Essex seamer, Mervyn Westfield, who is accused of offences related to spot-fixing, begins on January 12 and will, inevitably, turn the focus of the cricketing world back towards the sport’s grubby underbelly. The trial of Allen Stanford, currently scheduled to begin on January 23, may also revive memories some would rather forget.Yet there will also be much to savour during this tour. It says much for the abundance of talent in Pakistan that, barely months after losing some of their brightest talents to the spot-fixing debacle, the team are seen as providing a serious threat to England’s winning streak. Pakistan have won their last three series and lost just one of their last 12 Tests. World cricket needs a strong Pakistan and their recent progress is heartening.Perhaps their record flatters to deceive, however. Two of those series wins have come against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe – currently the weakest Test sides – while the other came against a Sri Lankan side in a transitional state. England will provide a far stiffer challenge. It is sometimes blithely stated that all England’s success has come on green pitches favouring seam bowlers. It’s not so, however. While England are certainly a daunting proposition in archetypal English conditions, they’ve also had success on run-filled surfaces. Think of Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Edgbaston and The Oval. With the likes of Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Graeme Swann in the team, England can ‘do attrition’ as well as anyone. Their opponents underestimate them at their peril.Pakistan are progressing, but their fragile recovery could well be crushed under the heel of a very impressive England.England XI (from) Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior (wk), Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, James Anderson, Ravi Bopara, Steven Davies (wk), Chris Tremlett, Monty PanesarCombined AM XI (from) William Porterfield (capt), George Dockrell, Boyd Rankin, Paul Stirling (all Ireland), Saqib Ali (UAE), Kyle Coetzer, Majid Haq (both Scotland), Hamid Hassan, Mohammed Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad+ (all Afghanistan), Christi Viljoen, Craig Williams (both Namibia)

Mustafa Kamal formally nominated for ICC president

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has approved its president Mustafa Kamal as its nomination for the ICC presidency

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Dec-2011The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has approved the nomination of its president Mustafa Kamal to the ICC presidency. The issue now moves to the ICC, which is expected to formally accept the nomination that will see Kamal assume office as vice-president at the end of the ICC annual conference in 2012 and ascend to the presidency in 2014.The BCB announced the nomination following an emergency board meeting after the PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf had said that the Pakistan board had backed Kamal for the ICC presidency. Under the ICC’s rotation policy, it was the turn of the PCB and the BCB turn to nominate a joint candidate. At the time of Ashraf’s comments, however, Kamal’s nomination was not certain. He had not yet been approved by a majority of BCB directors.

Dilshan demands batting improvement

Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has demanded more from his batsmen following their first-innings surrender for 174 in the second Test against Australia in Pallekele

Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has demanded more from his batsmen following their first-innings surrender for 174 in the second Test against Australia in Pallekele. He threatened numerous changes to the team if performances did not improve.Dilshan was one of a series of batsmen dismissed cheaply as Sri Lanka lurched to 76 for 5 at lunch on the first day, a position from which they never recovered despite an excellent batting pitch. The start seemed to reflect the chaotic nature of the hosts’ lead-in to the Test, with Rangana Herath (finger) and Ajantha Mendis (back) ruled out on the morning of the match due to injuries.”Definitely there is something wrong in the batting,” Dilshan said. “We are talking, discussing, we are doing a lot of hard work in the training and we are discussing a lot of things, but now is the time to deliver.”We can’t say the wicket is bad. They’ve bowled really well but we’ve played the last series in England, where there was a better attack, and on a difficult wicket we batted really well. Now the players should put their hands up and deliver, they have to deliver, now is the time, we can’t wait anymore.”This is the third time we’ve got out cheaply [including 82 on the final day against England in Cardiff]. They bowled really well in the start but our batsmen didn’t bat well, that is why we got out. It is a good wicket, we are playing seven batsmen, we can’t expect 174 all out.”Several ideas have been tossed about in Sri Lanka’s dressing room, including the employment of the sports psychologist Rudi Webster at the conclusion of the series. Dilshan also said the older batsmen, including himself and Thilan Samaraweera, had to take more responsibility or risk being dropped. Their struggles contrasted with the success of Angelo Mathews, who followed a second-innings 95 in Galle with 58 here.”He’s batted really well in the No. 7 position,” Dilshan said. “We have problems with the middle order and the top order. We don’t want to change someone batting really well at No. 7, but we have to think about the second innings. Maybe change the batting line-up and send someone in top.”Dilshan described the changes to the side minutes before play as “unfortunate”. They necessitated the inclusion of the offspinner Suraj Randiv, who was going to be dropped, and the legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna, making his debut.Herath was struck on the finger during a fielding drill on the eve of the Test, while Mendis had a back problem that worsened in the lead-up to the game. “We thought he [Herath] would be okay but today he tried to grip the ball and he couldn’t, his finger was very sore,” Dilshan said. “Ajantha had a back injury in last one-dayer but he managed to play, but today morning he talked to the physio, he was worse than the last few weeks. I don’t want to take a chance and play him, so that is why we gave a youngster a chance. Unfortunately we had to make two changes in the morning.”

Mithun aims to prove himself

Abhimanyu Mithun, the India fast bowler, is back in the Test squad after injuries ruled Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth out of the tour of the West Indies, and is hoping that this latest opportunity will give him the chance to establish himself in the squad. Mithun made his Test debut against Sri Lanka last July – he replaced Zaheer who missed that series with an injury as well – but was then overlooked in favour of Jaidev Unadkat for India’s tour of South Africa at end of 2010.”It feels good to be picked again,” the 21-year-old Mithun told the after a practice stint on Saturday. “I did expect to go to South Africa but … I am hoping to get a chance and prove myself again, like I did on my debut in Sri Lanka.”Mithun took six wickets at an average of 62 in three Tests against Sri Lanka, similar figures to Ishant Sharma, who took seven wickets at 61.71. He was initially disappointed about not going to South Africa, but said he was lucky to have received good advice from a number of people who told him to concentrate on playing for the love of the game rather than obsess over not playing for India. In particular, he gave credit to Sanath Kumar, the Karnataka coach over the past two seasons, according to the newspaper.”Initially I felt sad and at the net sessions that followed I did lose some concentration, focus and so on. Fortunately for me, a lot of people spoke to me and advised me well. Everyone encouraged me, told me I am a good bowler.”But the best advice I got was when I was told that when I started playing cricket I did so as I loved the game. At that point I wasn’t thinking of playing for India and so why think about it now, I was asked. That set me thinking and slowly I regained my confidence and got back to normal.”When asked whether Test cricket was too much pressure to handle, Mithun said he actually found it easier than playing domestic cricket as it wasn’t his job to lead the attack. “I found it easier in the Tests. There I was a rookie, I only had to look after my bowling, for which to the seniors were very much around to help. I was freer in a way. But when I got back to first class cricket, it was very different. The expectations had gone up and I was looked upon as someone who will get wickets whenever I bowled.”That was something I found it tough to deal with initially but slowly got used to that as well and started to enjoy my bowling once again.”
