Sem Alex Santana, Eduardo Barroca realiza treino tático no Botafogo

Best, Malik fined for on-field spat

Tino Best and Shoaib Malik were slapped with fines for an on-field altercation during the match between Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Zouks on July 23. While Best was charged with 10% and 50% of his match fee for breaching two clauses, Malik was charged with 50% of his match fee. The incident happened in the 15th over of Tridents’ innings after Best had Malik out bowled for 49. The two players argued mid-pitch, with Malik placing his hands on the bowler’s shoulder.Best’s offences included “conduct that either (a) is contrary to the spirit of the game; or (b) brings the game into disrepute”, a level- one offence and “using language or a gesture(s) that is seriously obscene, seriously offensive or of a seriously insulting nature to another player”, a level-two offence. Shoaib Malik’s offence related to “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players”. Both players pleaded guilty. The CPL management is also investigating another incident after the match at the team hotel involving the same players. The incident, a tournament release said, was “minor and no one was injured”.

Stirling will become the home of Scottish cricket after an agreement between Cricket Scotland and Stirling council. The development will see a new pavilion and indoor training facility built at New Williamfield, the home of Stirling County Cricket Club, with Cricket Scotland relocating its headquarters from the National Cricket Academy at Ravelston, Edinburgh. It is hoped that the redevelopment of the ground will start later this year, with the intention being to upgrade it to international match standards. Scotland will play the majority of their home international games at the ground, starting with the World T20 qualifiers in the summer of 2015.”This is an exciting year for cricket in Scotland, with the national team qualifying for the 2015 World Cup and more and more people participating in the sport every year,” Keith Oliver, Chairman of Cricket Scotland, said. “We very much look forward to moving into a new world-class centre for cricket in the heart of Scotland, with excellent facilities and an upgraded ground.”The new facility, which will be of one-day international standard, will serve as the perfect training centre for Scotland’s players at all levels and international teams seeking a training base out of their own season. It will provide a world-class facility for players, members of the club, the local cricket community and visitors to watch matches at all levels and to truly engage with our increasingly popular sport.”The hope is that the facility will also form part of Stirling’s planned Sports Village at Forthbank, which is set to be the home of Scotland’s National Centre for Curling.”We’re thrilled at the prospect of welcoming Cricket Scotland to Stirling and very much look forward to progressing this project with them,” said councillor Corrie McChord, convenor of Stirling council’s community planning and regeneration committee, which has given approval to the agreement in principle. “As Scotland’s city for sport, Cricket Scotland couldn’t find a better home.”

'Had no idea about the world record' – Muktar

Muktar Ali said he would have slammed a few more big hits had someone told him that he had equaled the record for most sixes in a first-class innings

Mohammad Isam15-Apr-2014Muktar Ali said he would have slammed a few more big hits had someone told him that he had equaled the record for most sixes in a first-class innings, during his 168 that helped Rajshahi Division beat Chittagong Divison by 403 runs in an NCL match. Only three other batsmen – Andrew Symonds, Jesse Ryder and Graham Napier – have hit 16 sixes in a first-class innings.Despite the regret, however, Muktar said he was happy to finally hit a first-class century after missing an opportunity in a previous game. Against Chittagong, he batted for less than three hours and took 148 balls to make 168 runs before he was finally dismissed by Ali Akbar, caught behind by Irfan Sukkur in the 136th over.”I am regretting my dismissal because I had no idea about the world record,” Muktar said. “Why won’t I feel sad about it? If I had known that 16 sixes equals a world record, I would have hit at least five-six more sixes. I could do anything I wanted at that stage.”There were two reasons for going after a century in this innings. I had missed out in a previous game when I got out for 96. I was so sad, I couldn’t sleep for three nights. I just wanted to score the century as soon as possible. The other reason was Sanjamul Islam, my good friend and roommate. He was teasing me after he made 172 the previous day, but I never realised I would make such a big score.”Muktar’s main role in the team is that of a fast bowler and, with the new ball in hand, he dismissed Chittagong captain Nafees Iqbal and Mahbubul Karim off his first two deliveries in the game. Mominul Haque avoided the hat-trick, but was caught behind in Muktar’s next over.He wasn’t the only star for Rajshahi, however. While batting, Muktar shared a 224-run partnership with Farhad Reza, who won Player of the Match for his career-best 259. His stand of 347 with Sanjamul was the catalyst for Rajshahi’s revival in the game and also equaled the record for the second-highest partnership for the seventh wicket in first-class cricket. shared by West Indies’ Denis Atkinson and Clairmonte Depeiza, against Australia in the 1955 Bridgetown Test.Records, though, were the last thing on Farhad’s mind as he prepared to get his side out of a hole at 77 for 6.”There was no thought about scoring a double-hundred or setting a partnership record. I just wanted to stay at the wicket, and keep Sanjamul along for company. We tried to minimise our mistakes and not give away a wicket at that stage,” Farhad said.

Younis, Misbah hold up Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were a wicket away from breaking Pakistan after lunch on the third day of the second Test in Dubai, but they could not take it

The Report by George Binoy10-Jan-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSri Lanka were a wicket away from breaking Pakistan after lunch on the third day of the second Test in Dubai, but they could not take it. Having conceded a first-innings lead of 223, and then slumped to 19 for 3 in the second, Pakistan were on the brink. Their old guard dragged them back from it. Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq batted with focus and not flash to whittle the deficit below 100 but because of the spectacular top-order failure their job was far from done. Their 113-run association spanned 41.1 overs, but Sri Lanka were still a wicket away from breaking Pakistan. The events that unfolded on the morning of the third day showed Pakistan what could have been had their wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed not dropped Angelo Mathews off Rahat Ali the previous evening. The Sri Lanka captain was on 5 at the time, his partnership with Mahela Jayawardene was 12 and their lead was 74. Rahat drew a similar edge from Mathews this morning, before the batsman had added to his overnight score, and Sarfaraz dived to his right to successfully take the catch.Pakistan went on to dismiss Sri Lanka by taking six wickets for 70 runs in the first session. Between those edges from Mathews, however, he had moved to 42 and his partnership with Mahela had grown to 93, swelling Sri Lanka’s lead towards 200. By the time the visitors were out for 388, 20 minutes before lunch in an extended session, their advantage was such that Pakistan required an escape act similar to what Sri Lanka pulled off to save the Abu Dhabi Test. Those prospects took a hit in the three overs Sri Lanka bowled before the break, when Rangana Herath got the new ball to rip and bounce sharply away from Ahmed Shehzad’s front-foot prod, grazing the outside edge on its way into Prasanna Jayawardene’s gloves. They trooped off the field a merry bunch, their bowlers beginning to drive home the advantage earned by Mahela’s century. After lunch Nuwan Pradeep continued the trend of the Sri Lankan quicks gaining more assistance from the pitch than Pakistan’s did, by bowling two deliveries that seamed away just enough to draw edges from Mohammad Hafeez and Khurram Manzoor, giving Prasanna two more catches.Perhaps it was the change of ball in the 13th over, but there were few alarms thereafter. Misbah joined Younis and the pair went about restoring stability by playing percentage shots. Younis was extremely careful at the start, scoring 2 off 20 balls before playing several fluent off and cover drives against the seamers. Misbah, on 3 off 16, planted his front foot forward and hit Herath with the turn over the long-off boundary, and then went past 3000 runs in Test cricket.Despite his experience, though, Misbah had a brain fade off the last ball before tea and was lucky to survive. He ran after pushing close on the off side but the bowler Suranga Lakmal had got to the ball quickly and Younis did not respond. Misbah’s sprint to safety would have been in vain had Lakmal directly hit the stumps. He was on 41 at the time.Misbah-ul-Haq was left with the responsibility of rescuing his side•AFPYounis and Misbah had scored at more than three runs an over before tea, but they added only 47 runs in 21 overs in a final session curtailed by bad light. A feature of their innings was how they played Herath, lunging forward to sweep and driving with the turn through the off side. The batting and its pace appeared homogenous, with Younis reaching his half-century off 109 balls and Misbah getting his off 108. They were the only reason Pakistan were not lost.Sri Lanka’s position of comfort in this match was largely due to Mahela’s century, during the course of which he passed Steve Waugh to move to No. 8 on the list of highest run-scorers in Tests. He added only 23 to his overnight score of 106 though. With Sri Lanka losing three quick wickets in the morning, Mahela began to pull and chip over the infield and also farm strike. He welcomed Saeed Ajmal with a sweep to the boundary but when he tried to play the reverse in the offspinner’s second over, he missed and was bowled. The dismissal ended a 77.2-over wicket drought for Ajmal.Pakistan lost Bilawal Bhatti to a hamstring niggle shortly after he bowled Shaminda Eranga, who scored 14 after being dropped on 8 by Hafeez at slip, but the rest of the attack gradually worked its way through the Sri Lankan tail. Pakistan desperately needed to eat into the deficit with most of their wickets intact but their top order failed them, leaving Misbah and Younis to toil for a great escape.

Ashington's Wood returns with success

ScorecardMark Wood has played all his Championship matches at Trent Bridge•Getty Images

There was a time when a match-turning contribution from an Ashington fast bowler was commonplace at Durham. Though with Steve Harmison’s decline, such days have been had been consigned to the past. But here Mark Wood, playing only his third Championship match – coincidentally, all have been at Trent Bridge – followed a career-best performance with the bat with a spell of 3 for 11 in 22, with all of his scalps a Test batsman. Describing himself as “a family friend” of Harmison and a product of the same Ashington club, Wood has the rare gift of pace that earmark him as a cricketer of rich potential. He can bat, too. He defines himself as a bowling allrounder but, earlier in the day, reached his maiden Championship 50 with a pulled six and dominated a last-wicket stand of 71 in only 12.2 overs with Graham Onions. It was a partnership that not only extended Durham’s lead to 151 but may well have had a deflating effect on Nottinghamshire’s morale. But on a wicket that has, at times, appeared painfully flat – the return of the heavy roller is far from universally popular among county spectators – it was Wood’s incisive bowling that may have had the greatest impact. Wood, by some distance the sharpest bowler on display in this match, belied the easy-paced surface to persuade Ed Cowan to nibble one angled across him, trap James Taylor attempting to play a straight one through square leg, and then, most impressively, have Samit Patel caught off the glove as he tried to deal with a bouncer. It was a spell that cut through the Nottinghamshire top order and provided Durham with an excellent opportunity to claim their second win of the season. Nottinghamshire resume on the final day with half their second-innings batting dismissed and still trailing by six runs.Such was Wood’s contribution, he could well be forgiven for questioning why he has not played more regularly. On his last appearance, here last August, he claimed 5 for 78 to help his team to a 16-run victory, but then found himself dropped for the next game.”I’m pleased to be here,” Wood said afterwards with a smile. “It seems to be the only place a get a game. Of course I was disappointed to be dropped last year. But I understood the reasons. We have a good attack who had done really well so when Ben Stokes came back I missed out. Hopefully this time, if I get a couple more wickets, I can make my case even stronger.”Wood was quick to admit he was building on foundations laid by Will Smith. Smith, who batted for 505 minutes for his 153, blunted the attack at their freshest and the pitch at its most helpful to establish a platform from which the lower-order could build. It paid a higher dividend than even he can have hoped, though, when the last five Durham wickets added 323 runs to the total. He finally fell, caught at mid-on, after he attempted to whip Patel’s left-arm spin through midwicket.”Smith has been the difference between the sides,” Wood said. “And he’s the reason we’re the favourites in this game. He showed great concentration and the work he did made it much easier for me.”While Wood led the way in the last-wicket stand, punching Patel for one lovely four through mid-on and carving Graeme Swann over extra cover for another, Onions also played his part. He thumped one back past Stuart Broad and drove Swann square as Durham kept Nottinghamshire in the field for 157.3 energy-sapping overs. But it is Wood’s bowling that may, in time, be of interest to the national selectors. He is not particularly tall or strong-looking but, from a short, straight run with an unusual start – a pronounced push off his back leg which, he says, is a technique learned from sprinters – he generates impressive, skiddy pace. He can reverse swing the ball, too, and showed an encouraging cricketing brain when talking about his wickets.”We had just got the ball reversing when Cowan edged that one that left him,” he explained. “With Taylor, we put the man behind square for the pull and, when we had him expecting the short ball, I pitched it up. And then with Samit, I hid the ball so he couldn’t tell which way it was going to swing and then surprised him by bowling a bouncer.”Gareth Breese, who had already contributed a useful 44, followed up with the wicket of Steven Mullaney – surely the only cricketer with Hooters as a bat sponsor – sharply caught off a fine arm ball, while earlier Alex Hales, back when he should have been forward, lost his middle stump.Michael Lumb, timing his drives sweetly on either side of the wicket, remains and looks in good touch, but he has a great deal of work ahead of him if Nottinghamshire are to salvage a draw from this game.At least Nottinghamshire had encouraging news of their England players. Broad bowled with increased pace and purpose on the third day. He finished with his third successive four-wicket haul in successive innings and would not have been flattered by a fifth. Just as importantly, he reported no adverse reaction to his 31 overs and confirmed that he would take a full part, with bat, with ball and in the field, in the remainder of the game.Swann came through unscathed, too. While he finished without a wicket, he did see two chances go down off his bowling – he was the guilty party on one occasion – and was the most economical of the Nottinghamshire bowlers. Perhaps there were a couple more full tosses than we are used to but, bearing in mind it was his first bowl in competitive cricket since the elbow operation, this was a pleasing return.

Allenby frustrated but committed at Glamorgan

Jim Allenby remains committed to Glamorgan after considering leaving the county having been stripped of the T20 captaincy for 2013 in favour of Marcus North.

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2013Jim Allenby, the Glamorgan allrounder, remains committed to the club after considering leaving the county.Allenby, 30, was stripped of the T20 captaincy for 2013 in favour of Australian overseas player Marcus North after leading the side in just five matches last season. He and Mark Wallace, the four-day captain, had shared the one-day captaincy in 2012 but now North will take on the role in both T20 and YB40 cricket.”Initially I was extremely disappointed,” Allenby told the “I felt after only captaining for five games I was not given a proper run at it. I would be lying if I said I had not considered my future and whether my ambitions might be met elsewhere.”But these things happen in sport where decisions are made which you don’t agree with. I have accepted the decision and completely moved on and I am 100% behind Mark and Marcus. I am absolutely committed to Glamorgan.”In a campaign ruined by the weather, Allenby only had five matches to make his mark as captain. Glamorgan lost three matches but did manage to do the double over Warwickshire. But he is keen for another crack at leadership.”It has been an ambition of mine for a long time to captain sides because I enjoy the role and feel I am good at it,” Allenby said, having missed the club’s preseason tour to Potchefstroom with an ongoing medical condition. “Whether I am a future Glamorgan captain we will have to wait and see who is making the decisions. But I still have those ambitions and feel the experiences I have had over the last couple of years will stand me in good stead.”Allenby was the leading allrounder in first-class cricket last season and was named Glamorgan’s player of the year. But he is is out of contract at the end of the season and a move away from Cardiff could be his next step.Since joining from Leicestershire, initially on loan in August 2009, only in 2010 – when Glamorgan missed out on Championship promotion by five points – have Glamorgan been challenging for honours.”I have a mortgage and only one career which I am in the middle of,” Allenby said. “I have spoken with the club this year and last year and told them my ambitions are to win trophies and play at the highest level I can. This has not changed and I would love for at least one of those things to happen here and all problems would be solved.”I will be playing my cricket where I think I can achieve those goals. I have made no secret of that and will tell anyone who asks me. I want to fulfil my goals here but if it is not we will look at things again. We will see how the next few months go.”
