Gers fans rage at Gerrard claim

Glasgow Rangers fans were far from happy with Charles Green’s claim he tried to sign Steven Gerrard for the Gers in 2013.

Green was Rangers owner for just over a year after the Ibrox outfit went into administration (BBC) after entering financial difficulties. His ownership was far from settled, and doubts were cast over the assets of Green’s consortium by Craig Whyte, who was originally in charge when administration fell.

As such, Green is not the most popular man amongst Rangers supporters, and his latest comments have not gone down too well either. He told talkSPORT he tried to sign Steven Gerrard in 2013, even though the Gers were in the lower leagues at the time while Gerrard was fighting for the Premier League title with Liverpool. It is clear the Gers supporters do not believe the claim.

A video of the comments was shared on Twitter by talkSPORT’s official account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Gers supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the comments from Green below

“Why does this guy still get air time when talking about rangers. It’s in the past. Leave it now”

“Can’t believe you are still giving this man airtime . Did you ask him where the arsenal shares are please no more , im sure all rangers fans would agree”

“Can we add talksport to the banned list? Constantly giving this old cretin airtime.”

“Aye, Gerrards wife gets home late and drunk. Pulls out a business card from her gucci handbag and tells Stevie we are off to Glasgow now. Stop giving this guy airtime.”

“Aye part of a midfield team with Nicky law, Ian black and dean sheils? I’m sure you did Charles, I’m sure you did.”

“As a proud @RangersFC supporter, this is the biggest load of tripe I’ve heard yet. In 2013 we were in the lower leagues and Gerrard was the captain of a side that just recently missed out on the league title. Can’t see him trading LA for away days at Arbroath.”

Everton linked to Harry Souttar

Everton are reportedly eyeing up a move for Stoke City defender Harry Souttar as new manager Rafael Benitez looks to freshen up his backline.

What’s the story?

According to reports, assistant manager Duncan Ferguson has scouted the highly-rated 22-year-old ahead of a potential move.

The report states that Souttar has been identified as a potential replacement for Yerry Mina after the Colombian centre-back expressed his desire to leave Goodison Park next summer.

It’s believed that Mina has his heart set on a move to Serie A with both Inter and Fiorentina keen to secure his services, while Souttar is continuing to impress in the Championship.

Benitez would love him

After departing boyhood club Dundee United to join Stoke back in September 2016, the youngster has enjoyed multiple loan spells away from the Bet365 Stadium.

A 12-month stay at Fleetwood Town during 2019/20 proved to be the turning point in Souttar’s career to date, though, and his eye-catching performances at Highbury Stadium were enough to secure a place in Michael O’Neill’s first-team plans.

“We drip-fed him in using the cup games to begin with and he found his way into the starting XI,” said O’Neill. “I said to him that he just has to keep up the levels he’s been doing. Sometimes young players drop off a little bit. He can’t allow that to happen.

He’s a player blessed with great natural attributes. Obviously his height, but also, he’s got good game intelligence, and he’s a great user of the ball as well. That’s something which I think will set him apart from the other defenders in this league,” he concluded.

Souttar made 38 league starts for the Potters last term as he found his feet at the heart of defence and has continued his good form into the current campaign, making ten Championship outings as Stoke sit fourth in the second-tier table.

As a result, Everton’s director of football, Marcel Brands, must sanction a move for the Australian starlet if Mina departs for Italian football.

Benitez would surely relish the opportunity to work with such a talented young player, providing the Merseyside outfit with a solid defensive foundation for many years to come. After all, the Spanish coach has already been keen to blood young players in his team this season.

Jarrad Branthwaite, Anthony Gordon and Lewis Dobbin have all become more regular parts of the furniture this season. Souttar must join that talented crop coming through at Goodison Park.

Liverpool fans fume at transfer update

A number of Liverpool supporters after fuming after a fresh update claimed any new Reds signings will likely be put off until next year.

Jurgen Klopp’s side scraped to a third-place finish in the Premier League last season, despite constant injury problems holding them back.

The hope from some fans was therefore that Liverpool would have a busy summer in the transfer market to alleviate that issue, but things haven’t panned out that way to date.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Ibrahima Konate is still the only signing to come in, while the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri have moved on to new clubs.

There is still time for new faces to arrive before next Tuesday’s transfer cutoff, but The Daily Mail [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] claim that signings won’t happen until next summer now, even though David Marshall and Mikkel Damsgaard are mentioned in the report.

Erik Ten Hag interested in Man United job

Manchester United confirmed the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday morning, after over three years in charge at Old Trafford.

In a statement, the Manchester United board thanked Ole and outlined their intentions moving forward;

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision.

“Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season.”

The dismissal follows an embarrassing result for the Red Devils that saw them lose 4-1 to Watford on Saturday afternoon, which was seemingly the final nail in the coffin for the Norwegian manager, after an emergency meeting was held in the hours following the game, eventually leading to the club’s announcement.

Many names have been thrown into the mix for the highly speculated Manchester United manager job, and although the initial position to be filled is for an interim manager to take over for the next six months, moves are being made to find the right long term manager to lead them into the 2022/23 season.

One journalist has dropped a huge development on one particular popular candidate for the long term position next summer.

Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth claimed;

“It’s my information that Ajax simply wouldn’t entertain releasing a manager mid-season. However, I’ve been told that Erik ten Hag would 100% be interested in the Manchester United job in the summer. His contract runs out in the summer of 2023.”

Fans will surely be buzzing with this revelation, as Erik Ten Hag is said to be one of the ‘most promising’ managers in world football right now.

The 51-year-old Ajax boss has led the Dutch side to two league titles and to their first Champions League semi-final since 1997 beating Real Madrid and Juventus on their way.

He also has connections to a Manchester United player who, ironically, scored the final goal for the side against Watford.

Ten Hag developed Donny Van De Beek into the player that scored 41 goals and 34 assists for Ajax, before making his move to Manchester United.

The 24-year-old midfielder would clearly welcome Ten Hag with open arms after having a turbulent time so far at Old Trafford with not being able to get into the team and would hope that his presence could boost his game time, and ultimately make him more of a key player in the starting team.

With that in mind, everyone associated with the 20-time English champions would surely be elated to see him arrive at the club next summer.

Manchester United are set to face Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday with Michael Carrick leading the team in their must-win in Spain.

Journalist would be surprised if Origi joined Crystal Palace

Journalist Matt Woosnam has told Football FanCast that he would be surprised if Liverpool’s Divock Origi joined Crystal Palace this summer.

Earlier this month, the £60,000-a-week striker was linked with a move to Selhurst Park, with 90min claiming that Palace were one side who were monitoring his situation at Anfield.

Last season, Origi barely featured for Liverpool. He made just nine league appearances, failing to score in any.

It means an Anfield exit in this transfer window makes sense as the 26-year-old looks for more game time. Woosnam, however, doubts Palace will be the club to offer him a way out.

“I’ve not heard that one at all,” The Athletic journalist said when discussing the Origi to Palace speculation.

“I would be surprised. Again, I wouldn’t rule it out completely, but he would be on big wages. I would think that if Palace were looking to sign someone, they’d be looking at someone slightly less established, slightly younger.

“I wouldn’t have thought that one would happen, but I’m prepared to be wrong on that!”

While Christian Benteke is still at the club after signing a new contract, Palace still look a bit light up front following Michy Batshuayi’s return to Chelsea.

Bearing that in mind, they could do with another striker, though Woosnam’s words suggest Origi seems unlikely in this moment of time.

Everton in the race for Leon Bailey

Everton are one of the clubs battling for the signature of Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey, according to 90Min.

The lowdown

It currently seems to be Aston Villa who are at the front of the queue for Bailey. Dean Smith’s side reportedly submitted a £25million bid but saw it rejected.

Bailey caught the eye after he was directly involved in 17 goals (scoring nine and assisting eight) in just 25 Bundesliga starts last season (via WhoScored).

He also ranked in the league’s top five for successful dribbles per match with 2.5. For context, Richarlison led the way for Everton in this department with only 1.8.

The 23-year-old has predominantly been used as a left winger, but can also play on the right (via Transfermarkt). Intriguingly, Everton have already signed a wide player from the Werkself this summer in Demarai Gray.

Back in 2018, former Bayer 04 coach Heiko Herrlich described Bailey as a player who ‘can do anything’.

The latest

Everton are named by 90min as one of the many clubs ‘keen’ on beating Villa to the signing of the Jamaican attacker.

Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers are Southampton are also identified as suitors.

The report also notes that three Champions League sides in the form of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have previously monitored Bailey, but currently ‘there’s no indication’ that they’ll enter the fray.

The verdict

Whilst it would raise eyebrows if Everton signed a third winger on the back of Gray and Andros Townsend, it’s clear that Bailey is a cut above in terms of his quality.

However, Leicester’s interest has perhaps changed the landscape. They’re the only named suitor who can offer Bailey European football, having already broken into the top six.

It seems that we’ll either see a bidding war or Bailey will defuse the situation by making his preferred destination known.

For the mid-table clubs in the frame, he’d represent some coup based on his considerable potential and production so far.

In other news, Everton also face a battle for the signature of this defender.

West Brom handed Derek McInnes boost

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a boost in their bid to appoint Derek McInnes as Sam Allardyce’s successor at The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Express & Star, who claim that the former Aberdeen manager is interested in taking over the vacant managerial position at West Brom this summer.

The Baggies have so far endured a rather tedious search in their bid to appoint a new manager, with David Wagner rejecting the club’s offer in favour of taking over at BSC Young Boys, while the West Brom owner, Guochuan Lai, also vetoed a move for Chris Wilder.

Fans should be buzzing

While McInnes might not be the most attractive of names linked with the West Brom job, there are plenty of reasons why, if the 49-year-old does go on to become Sam Allardyce’s replacement this summer, fans of the club should be buzzing.

After taking over a mid-table Scottish Championship St. Johnstone side back in 2007/08, McInnes led the side to the second tier title in just his second season at the club, before gradually going on to establish the Saints as a solid Scottish Premiership side, finishing eighth in back to back seasons, before leaving the club in 5th place in the top flight of Scottish football.

The 49-year-old then moved south of the border to a Bristol City side that were rooted to the bottom of the Championship table, leading the Robins on an eight-game unbeaten run that saw the club remarkably survive the drop in 2011/12, eventually finishing in 20th place.

A move back to Scotland followed, where McInnes would spend eight full seasons at Aberdeen. At Pittodrie, the Paisley-born manager would never finish lower than fourth place in the Scottish top flight, and on four occasions finished as league runners up.

He also took the Dons to 11 cup semi-finals and five finals in his time at the club, in addition to winning Aberdeen’s first trophy for 19 years by lifting the Scottish League Cup in 2013/14, as well as guiding the team to the third qualifying round of the Europa League, only to lose out to Real Sociedad.

Furthermore, McInnes has built something of a reputation for developing young players, while Sir Alex Ferguson has also labelled the 49-year-old a “top-class” coach.

As such, while he may not have a great deal of experience in the English leagues behind him, McInnes certainly has the pedigree for building and subsequently sustaining a side in the top flight of their respective division, something that West Brom and their fans would undoubtedly grasp with both hands regarding a return to the Premier League.

Neil Jones provides key Liverpool update

Liverpool have received no bids for unwanted Reds pair Loris Karius and Sheyi Ojo, according to reliable journalist Neil Jones.

The Lowdown: No future for duo

Jurgen Klopp has had a quiet summer window overall, only bringing in Ibrahima Konate and selling the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Two players with no future at Liverpool are Karius and Ojo, with the former fourth in the goalkeeping pecking order and the latter not playing for the Reds’ first-team since the 2016/17 season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326â€]

The Latest: Jones provides key update

Taking to Twitter on deadline day, Goal‘s Jones claimed that there have been ‘no developments’ regarding Karius and Ojo moving on.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-2/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Sell them on, Reds

Neither Karius or Ojo have any kind of future at Anfield, so it is for their own good that they find a new club before the transfer window closes.

If not, they risk stagnating further at Liverpool and enjoying no first-team football, with Klopp highly unlikely to even play them in the domestic cups based on how little action they’ve seen in recent seasons.

Karius has never recovered from his 2018 Champions League final nightmare, while Oyo simply isn’t at the level required to be a handy squad player, spending time at Wigan Athletic, Wolves, Fulham, Reims, Rangers and Cardiff City in the past.

Leicester are linked with Jonas Hofmann

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach winger Jonas Hofmann ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to German outlet Bild, the Foxes are keen to prize the 28-year-old away from the Bundesliga outfit as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad over the summer.

The report also claims that fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are vying for Hofmann’s signature.

Rodgers needs him

Leicester enjoyed an impressive 2020/21 campaign, sealing their maiden FA Cup crown before narrowly missing out on a Champions League qualification spot.

Injuries to several key stars badly affected Rodgers’ charges throughout the season, with a lack of strength in depth noticeable upon their absence.

Harvey Barnes was flying before a serious knee injury ruled the 23-year-old out for the remainder of the campaign, and the drop-off in quality among his direct replacements led to a slight change of system for the Midlands outfit.

AS Roma forward Cengiz Under arrived on a season-long loan last summer and was expected to add an exciting and intriguing option to the Leicester attack.

However, the Turkey international failed to settle in England, with Rodgers seemingly remaining unconvinced over his tactical discipline.

Although Under would have been the most natural alternative to the injured Barnes, Rodgers often opted for either Ricardo Pereira, a full-back, or Ayoze Perez, an attacking midfielder, to fill the void out wide.

Under made just one Premier League start during his time at the King Power Stadium, failing to find the back on the net while on league duty throughout a bitterly disappointing loan spell.

His return to Rome leaves the door open for a replacement which Rodgers desperately needs, and director of football Jon Rudkin may have found the perfect one in Hofmann.

The Germany international has impressed at Monchengladbach for many years now and was particularly impressive in 2020/21, bagging eight goals and providing 13 assists in all competitions.

If Leicester want to finally break into the top four next season, then the addition of Hofmann could prove to be pivotal.

Preview: Spurs vs Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur will make the trip from north to west London this evening to take on Brentford as Antonio Conte’s men look to strengthen their hold on a place in the Premier League’s top four.

Spurs are currently fourth but their place in the Champions League spots is feeble, with goal difference the only factor separating them and fifth-placed Arsenal.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Having been dealt a setback last weekend when losing 1-0 to Brighton, Conte’s men can’t afford to slip up again against the Bees.

It is a must-win for the Lilywhites and so here is how Football FanCast believe Spurs will set up.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Romero, Dier, Davies, Emerson, Sessegnon, Betancur, Hojbjerg, Kulusevski, Son, Kane (3-4-3)

In terms of formation, we expect Conte to stick with his preferred 3-4-3 set-up at the Brentford Community Stadium, with Sergio Reguilon dropping out of the XI in favour of the £58k-per-week Ryan Sessegnon.

The Spaniard returned to the starting lineup against the Seagulls having come on as a substitute the week before against Aston Villa, with Matt Doherty sustaining an injury that has since ruled the wing-back out for the remainder of the season.

However, it was a poor display from the 25-year-old who completed just 63% of his passes whilst failing to provide a single interception, clearance or block whilst making only one tackle.

Labelled as “pathetic” by journalist Tom Young, the £43m left-wing-back has featured in six of Spurs’ last seven matches having regained his place after Ryan Sessegnon sustained a hamstring injury.

The 21-year-old has since returned from his setback, making the bench for the north London outfit’s last two games and could be in contention for a return to the starting lineup.

Prior to his injury, the Englishman had arguably his best run of games in a Spurs shirt, featuring in seven out of eight matches from late January to early March.

Tottenham insider John Wenham was full of praise for Sessegnon after a 3-0 win over Norwich City, calling the wing-back “amazing.”

Conte will have to get his team selection spot on against Brentford with there being no more room for slip-ups with just six games to go.
