Senior Man Utd figures now unhappy with Erik ten Hag for one main reason

Senior figures at Manchester United are now believed to be unhappy with manager Erik ten Hag for one specific reason, according to a new claim.

Ten Hag feeling the heat at Man Utd

Last weekend’s 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League hasn’t done much to take the pressure off the shoulders of the Dutchman, whose future continues to be under the microscope on a weekly basis.

In fairness to Ten Hag, United actually played well for chunks of the game at Selhurst Park, having more of the ball than the Eagles and creating enough opportunities to pick up all three points.

The bottom line is that the Red Devils failed to win for a third time in five league outings this season, however, and their current 11th-place ranking is nowhere near good enough, in terms of wanting to get back into the Champions League. Granted, it is still very early days, but the table is already taking shape and Ten Hag’s men don’t want to start losing further ground on their rivals.

A recent report has claimed that the 54-year-old is safe currently, with the likes of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Dan Ashworth, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox all happy to give him more time. Replacements for him have still been mooted, however, including Max Allegri and Simone Inzaghi, with the latter inspiring Inter Milan to Serie A title glory last season.

Senior Man Utd figures unhappy with Ten Hag

According to Give Me Sport, senior Manchester United figures are unhappy about the lack of goals on show under Ten Hag currently, with further unrest on show at Old Trafford.

The report states that “patience is beginning to wear thin” with the Red Devils’ profligacy in front of goal, even though they have largely been performing well in a defensive sense. Only five league goals have been scored in as many games, three of which came in one game away to newly-promoted Southampton.

Erik ten Hag

For all the reports claiming Ten Hag isn’t under genuine threat of being sacked currently, it does feel as though there is still plenty of speculation over his future, which is going to be extremely hard for him to change.

The former Ajax boss deserves undoubted credit for winning the EFL Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons at Old Trafford, not least because he beat Manchester City in the final of the latter last term, but the negatives still arguably outweigh the positives under him.

Despite some fans possibly having high hopes of a genuine top-four push in 2024/25, United are already in the bottom half of the table, and it is still hard to identify a genuine playing style, with performances often requiring moments of individual brilliance, rather than grinding down teams in the way City, Liverpool and Arsenal do.

Sunday’s home clash with Tottenham feels like a big afternoon for Ten Hag, and defeat against their rivals could crank up the pressure on him. That being said, a convincing win may ease the level of scrutiny, so he needs his attackers to step up, with no player scoring more than once in the Premier League yet this season.

That has come as some surprise to City – who made Premier League history last season when claiming a fourth-successive title triumph – but they have been locked in a 115-charge Financial Fair Play battle and other legal arguments with the English authorities and are still waiting to discover what punishments, if any, they will face when it comes to supposed financial misconduct in Manchester.

The two Lionesses stood out as Sonia Bompastor's side inched closer to the first of four pieces of silverware on offer this season

Chelsea will compete in a sixth-successive Women's League Cup final next month, taking on either Arsenal or Manchester City as they bid for a first triumph in the competition since 2021 after comfortably beating West Ham by a 2-0 scoreline. First-half goals from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sjoeke Nusken were enough to secure their place in the showpiece, with the Hammers simply beaten by the better team in the end, despite an encouraging start.

There were 20 minutes played when Rytting Kaneryd broke the deadlock, catching Kinga Szemik out at her near post with a powerful strike, and Nusken doubled that lead before the half-hour mark. It was a reward for the tenacious pressing by herself and Guro Reiten, who slipped Nusken through on goal after the pair had harried Eva Nystrom to great effect.

There was little in the way of goal-mouth action at either end after that. Viviane Asseyi hit the frame of the goal with a free-kick in first-half stoppage time for West Ham, while there were chances for Mayra Ramirez and Maika Hamano that went begging for the hosts. It always felt comfortable for Chelsea though, even if it wasn't relentless, as they were able to see the game out despite a late flurry from the trailing Hammers.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Hannah Hampton (6/10):

Had one heart-in-mouth moment when a clearance ricocheted off Asseyi, but it bounced well out of harm's way. Was proactive with her decision-making and made a couple of smart saves.

    Ashley Lawrence (7/10):

Got forward relentlessly to offer an effective outlet in attack.

    Nathalie Bjorn (7/10):

Tidy on the ball and perfectly solid in her defending.

    Millie Bright (8/10):

Strong, decisive and timely in her tackles. Stood up really well to West Ham's attacks.

    Niamh Charles (6/10):

Was quieter than Lawrence, as Chelsea found a lot of joy down the right in particular, but still motored up and down the left well.

    Midfield

    Keira Walsh (8/10):

A wonderfully classy performance on her full Chelsea debut. Ran the game.

    Sjoeke Nusken (7/10):

Pressed well and enjoyed some attacking freedom with Walsh holding things down behind her. Both of those facts led to her goal, which doubled Chelsea's lead.

    Maika Hamano (6/10):

Showed nice glimpses and was tidy in possession in all areas.

    Attack

    Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (7/10):

Was guilty of being wasteful on some occasions but balanced it out with plenty of excellent moments as well, including her strike to open the scoring.

    Mayra Ramirez (6/10):

Worked incredibly hard and did essentially everything but score. It just didn't fall for her, despite her best efforts.

    Guro Reiten (7/10):

Like Charles, she was quiet at times because of Chelsea's joy down the right, but still came away with a neat assist for Nusken.

    Subs & Manager

    Lauren James (5/10):

Came on just past the hour but struggled to make a real impact as Chelsea took their foot off the gas and just managed the remainder of the game.

    Aggie Beever-Jones (6/10):

Led the line for the final half hour but didn't get much service, though she did have some nice moments trying to create.

    Wieke Kaptein (6/10):

Introduced with 20 minutes to play to help Chelsea see the rest of the game out. Showed good initiative on the ball when she had the chance.

    Oriane Jean-Francois (N/A):

Replaced Rytting Kaneryd for the final 10 minutes.

    Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Didn't underestimate the opponent and gave the occasion the respect it deserved with a strong XI. That was needed to break West Ham down, too, as they didn't give Chelsea anything easily. Made her substitutions early and while they couldn't make a real impact on the game, they brought fresh legs and energy to see the game out.

Bid prepared: Rangers wanted £17m star in the making but got Cantwell

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement made plenty of changes to his playing squad during the summer transfer window to shape the team in his image.

The Light Blues manager was ruthless with his decisions as he allowed a number of experienced, long-term, Gers players to move on from Ibrox.

Jon McLaughlin, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, and Kemar Roofe were all allowed to depart on free transfers at the end of their respective contracts.

That allowed head of recruitment Nils Koppen and Clement to bring in the likes of Nedim Bajrami, Vaclav Cerny, Robin Propper, Connor Barron, and Jefte, among others, during the summer transfer window.

The Rangers chiefs were not finished gutting the squad of experienced, ageing players, though, as they also sold Connor Goldson, Scott Wright, and Todd Cantwell, whilst allowing Ben Davies to join Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season.

They decided to invest in young talent and had to remove the growing group of experienced duds with little room to improve and develop in the years to come.

One of the younger stars to depart, however, was attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell, who endured an odd time at Ibrox during his spell at the club.

How much Rangers paid for Todd Cantwell

In January 2023, former Rangers head coach Michael Beale swooped to sign the former England U21 international from Norwich City for a reported fee of £1.5m, with his contract at Carrow Road due to expire that summer.

The English maestro hit the ground running in Glasgow and caught the eye with his impressive performances as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

Cantwell made 16 appearances in the second half of the 2022/23 Scottish Premiership campaign and contributed with six goals and four assists under Beale, whilst creating five ‘big chances’ and making 1.3 key passes per game.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

The 26-year-old, who was deployed on the left of a front three or in the number ten role for Rangers, then had mixed success in his second season with the club.

Beale, who signed him for the Light Blues, was sacked and replaced by Philippe Clement in October of the 2023/24 campaign, which may have impacted his progress.

As you can see in the table above, he only started 24 games and had to come on as a substitute in six matches last season for the Scottish giants.

In those 24 starts, though, Cantwell did provide seven goals and created seven ‘big chances’, which showed that he can produce regular quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

However, the forward then decided that he wanted to leave Ibrox this summer, handing in a transfer request, and was sold to Blackburn Rovers for £500k.

This meant that Rangers made a £1m loss on Cantwell in his 18 months at the club. Things could have been so different for the Gers, however, if they had landed one of their other winger targets from the January window in 2023 – Antoine Semenyo.

Rangers' reported interest in Antoine Semenyo

Ahead of the January transfer window in the 2022/23 campaign, it was reported that Rangers were one of the teams interested in signing Bristol City attacker Antoine Semenyo.

His contract with the English Championship side was due to expire at the end of the season and SportsWorldGhana reported that the Gers were preparing an offer of £5m to sign him in January.

The Bristol Post then added that Rangers and Celtic were both keeping tabs on the talented forward’s situation ahead of possible swoops for him in that window.

It remains unknown as to whether or not the Light Blues officially submitted the £5m offer that was prepared for his services but both Rangers and the Hoops were ultimately blown out of the water by Bournemouth.

The Premier League side showed their financial muscle with an offer of £9m plus an extra £1.5m in potential add-ons to land the 23-year-old star, despite him being available on a free transfer later that year.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Rangers may now regret not moving quicker to seal a deal for the Ghana international as his form for the Cherries since then suggests that he is one that got away.

Antoine Semenyo's current market value

At the time of writing (07/10/2024), Transfermarkt has his current market value at a whopping €20m (£16.7m) and that is significantly more than £5m the Gers were willing to pay for him, and more than the £9m that Bournemouth initially paid for the attacker.

Like Cantwell, Semenyo is a versatile forward who is comfortable playing on either flank or through the middle, and could have been signed by Beale to play on the left ahead of the Englishman.

The Bristol City star had scored six goals in the Championship during the first half of the 2022/23 campaign and did not hit the ground running in the Premier League, with one goal in 11 outings for the Cherries.

However, the 24-year-old dynamo, who was described as “powerful” by Lewis Cook, hit his stride in his first full season with Bournemouth and contributed with eight goals and two assists in 25 starts in the top-flight on the wing.

This means that he scored more goals in a Premier League season than Cantwell ever managed in one Premiership term with the Light Blues.

As you can see in the table above, Semenyo has also enjoyed a superb start to the current league season with Bournemouth, scoring three goals and creating two ‘big chances’ in just seven appearances.

The 24-year-old winger has proven himself to be more than capable in the English top-flight and that has resulted in his Transfermarkt value soaring up to £17m since his move from Bristol City at the start of last year.

Whereas, Cantwell’s value dropped by £1m during his 18 months at Ibrox and this suggests that Semenyo is one that got away for the Gers and Beale, as they missed out on a Premier League star in the making.

£180,000-per-week Arsenal star could also miss Bournemouth after injury

It is believed that one more Arsenal star could also miss Bournemouth after picking up an injury, with manager Mikel Arteta facing a possible shortage.

Arsenal injury absentees and concerns ahead of Bournemouth

Club captain and chief creative midfielder Martin Odegaard remains weeks away from returning following ankle ligament damage, which he sustained on international duty with Norway last month, and the former Real Madrid ace isn’t Arteta’s only absentee.

Even if he is unlikely to feature much, Kieran Tierney is thought to remain out with that hamstring injury he picked up at Euro 2024 with Scotland as well. There are numerous other concerns ahead of Bournemouth, with both Jurrien Timber and Ben White being assessed after not featuring for their countries on international duty.

White has missed Arsenal’s last four matches with a groin problem, while Timber didn’t travel to represent the Netherlands after being forced to sit out the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League.

The good news for Arteta is that star forward Kai Havertz could be fit for Bournemouth, while Thomas Partey is also expected to be available for Arsenal’s next game after missing Ghana’s tour of duty because of illness.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has been “progressing well” in his recovery from injury after missing the last few weeks, and Arteta suggested before their win over Southampton that the Ukraine international could make a return this weekend.

Arsenal were dealt a very serious scare when Bukayo Saka went off in the second half during England’s 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley last week, with fears surrounding a hamstring injury for the winger, but Lee Carsley then eased that anxiety for Arteta by confirming it wasn’t serious.

“Bukayo would have been close, but it would have been unfair to take a risk with him,” Carsley said ahead of their win over Finland.

“He’s a positive person and I expect him to be fine.”

One player who looks certain to miss Bournemouth, though, is versatile defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Japan international made his first appearance of the season against Southampton after recovering from knee damage, but according to TEAMtalk this week, Arsenal fear Tomiyasu could be out for another month following a reoccurrence of the issue.

Arsenal could also be without Gabriel Martinelli after a calf injury

Gabriel Martinelli suffered a calf issue on international duty with Brazil, and it is believed the £180,000-per-week winger could now also miss their game against Bournemouth with Odegaard and Tomiyasu.

The 23-year-old was forced to sit out Brazil’s 4-0 win over Peru, with doubts now surrounding Martinelli’s availability for Arsenal this weekend as well. Journalist Charles Watts, writing for CaughtOffside, claims that Arsenal will make a decision on Martinelli’s inclusion on Friday.

The South American is travelling back to north London right now, and will undoubtedly be assessed ahead of their return to action at the Vitality Stadium. Martinelli is a mainstay forward under Arteta, bagging two goals and two assists over seven league appearances this season, so he would be a sore miss.

“His pace is frightening,” said pundit Micah Richards on Martinelli last year.

“Everyone has talked about Saka and Odegaard, and the two defenders, Gabriel, Saliba, Ramsdale, but not that many people talk about Martinelli. In transition, he is frightening.”

    WHAT NEYMAR SAID

The ex-Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain playmaker is still searching for a spark, but has told reporters on when he expects to be back to something resembling his best: “Physically, I'm getting better and better. Today I felt better than in the last game, so it's little by little. I won't be able to get back into shape all of a sudden. But in two or three games, I'll be 100%.”

Pundit wants "one of the highest paid players" at Rangers on £23k-p/w gone

“One of the highest paid players” at Rangers currently should be sold by the Ibrox club, according to a fresh claim from pundit Derek Ferguson.

Latest Rangers news

The Gers could look to bring in new faces during the January transfer window, with one report claiming that a defensive midfielder is at the top of Philippe Clement’s wishlist. A “cut-price deal” is being looked at by the Scottish Premiership club, with the manager wanting “two defensive-minded midfielders to shield the back-line”, but only currently having Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande to call upon.

Midtjylland attacking ace Dario Osorio is also reportedly admired by Rangers, but are far from alone in expressing an interest, with Celtic among the other suitors. He has been compared to Angel Di Maria, who enjoyed a spectacular career for the likes of Real Madrid and Argentina, which could whet the appetite of supporters.

Away from possible incoming signings for the Gers, there are injury problems for Clement to contend with at the moment, not least with Oscar Cortes. The young winger could now be a “long-term” absentee, as his loan spell from Lens struggles to spark into life because of constant fitness issues.

On the plus side, it looks as though Rabbi Matondo could be back in the fold after the international break, having hinted at as much on social media recently, giving Rangers more firepower moving forward. Now, a big claim has emerged regarding the Welshman’s future.

Pundit wants £23k-p/w Rangers player gone

Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson claimed that Matondo should be sold by Rangers, clearly not seeing a future for him at the Scottish giants:

“Ah! Matondo, he’s one of the highest paid players. He gave one of his best performances against a team that’d been beaten by one of the lower-league teams, that’s Spartans beating Ross County, then he had a good game against them at Hampden. That, plus the other moment that he’s given us was the goal against Celtic. No, Matondo should have been out the door.”

Ferguson certainly hasn’t held back in his comments regarding Matondo, with supporters likely to be divided when it comes to the Wales international, of whom his former international manager Rob Page once said:

“I love Rabbi to bits, he’s such a threat with his pace. He’s a great character in and around the group. He’s earned the right to be back involved. I’d have had him in before this, but because of his injuries we couldn’t. To get Rabbi back is a positive.”

There have been moments of real quality from the £23,000-a-week Matondo in the three seasons since he joined, especially a stunning equaliser in the 3-3 draw at home to Celtic last season, but he has also flattered to deceive.

A tally of just eight goals in 65 appearances for the Gers is disappointing for an attacking player, with injuries often holding him back, so for that reason, looking to sell him next year when he only has 12 months remaining on his contract could make sense, rather than losing him on a free transfer in 2026.

Transfer expert: Arsenal weighing up bid to sign £45,000-p/w ace in January

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a January move to sign a new forward as they look to find cover for Bukayo Saka in a season that is threatening to expose some gaps in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal drop more points and suffer more injuries

Despite taking the lead twice, Arsenal were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino, his first for the club, were cancelled out by Virgil van Dijk and a late strike from Mohamed Salah.

The result leaves Arsenal five points off the pace set by Premier League champions and leaders Manchester City, and four points behind Liverpool, though they have still only lost once in their opening nine games.

Worse still, Arsenal seemed to pick up yet more squad problems. Centre-back Gabriel was forced off just before the hour mark with a problem, while the returning Jurrien Timber was also taken off fourteen minutes from time, five minutes before Salah exploited his absence to draw Arne Slot’s side level.

It came amid Saka already facing a race for fitness, which he won, while Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu both lost their battles to feature and captain Martin Odegaard rermains sidelined with an ankle injury, though there is hope that he will return before the international break.

They will be boosted by the return of William Saliba from suspension when they take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park next Saturday lunchtime, but defeat against the Magpies could see them eight points off the early pace, a gap that they may struggle to make up against the winning machine that is Manchester City.

Arsenal tipped for January signing

Now, former Manchester United scout turned transfer insider Mick Brown has claimed that Arsenal are weighing up a move to sign an attacking reinforcement as early as January, in the form of Brentford’s in-form man Bryan Mbeumo.

The Brentford star has stepped seamlessly into the gap left at the G-Tech stadium left by Ivan Toney, and scored twice against Ipswich Town to take his tally for the season to eight, a record only bettered by Erling Haaland in the Premier League.

Speaking 18 months ago, Thomas Frank was full of praise for his “fantastic” striker: “He has grown more and more to be a key player for us. He works so hard, he’s a fantastic pressing player and can score goals and get assists, but maybe lacked enough goals. He works very hard on his finishing.”

However, he admitted that a January move looks complex, and that the 25-year-old may be one more for the future transfer windows rather than the one immediately ahead.

“I don’t think Brentford would entertain an offer in the middle of the season, but he could be one to watch next summer.”

Any move would likely be pricey in January, with Mbeumo still having 18 months to run on his £45,000 a week deal in Hounslow, though the summer could see a more affordable deal available as Brentford look to avoid losing their newfound talisman for nothing.

And the Gunners would likely face significant competitiion, with Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Liverpool all linked with the Cameroonian forward. Arsenal have also been linked with a move to sign Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as they seek cover for Saka, but will any signing help them catch City this season?
