A half-century from the opener Mithali Raj, followed by a four-wicket haul from the left-arm spinner Sravanthi Naidu helped India Women to a 16-run win against Bangladesh Women in Cox’s Bazar. India, batting first, made 101 for 1 on the back of a 98-run stand for the second wicket between Raj and Poonam Raut after Latika Kumari had fallen for a duck in the fourth over. Raj struck four fours during her 55 not out while Raut’s 46-ball 42 included two fours.India did not let Bangladesh settle at all during their chase, as Shikha Pandey and Jhulan Goswami ran through the team’s top order. Rumana Ahmed (21) was the only batter to make more than 20, as Naidu and Gouher Sultana dented Bangladesh’s progress with wickets at regular intervals. Naidu eventually finished with 4 for 9, her best figures in limited-overs cricket, as Bangladesh folded for 85 in their 20 overs.

No dia seguinte, o Cuiabá enfrenta o Atlético-GO, na Arena Pantanal.

A partida

Pace variations working for Ashwin

India’s spinners have been among the standout performers of the World T20 and what has worked for them is that they have varied their speeds, R Ashwin said

Abhishek Purohit in Dhaka29-Mar-20144:05

‘Why should I lag behind in the advantage’ – Ashwin

‘I wouldn’t want to swim in a tsunami’

R Ashwin on similarities between this campaign and the 2013 Champions Trophy: “There are lots (of similarities) but there are smaller things which obviously nobody hears of. We’re enjoying ourselves. For once we’re not looking at results. We’re not looking at what we need to achieve. If we’re lucky enough we’ll be here until the 6th (of April). The camp is pretty upbeat in terms of having some good football. You keep playing cricket all your life, so playing soccer gives you leisure time. Those are the things we’re associating with. We’re having a real good atmosphere in the dressing room as well.”
On whether India would bat against Australia to challenge themselves: “I wouldn’t want to swim in a tsunami. I wouldn’t want to challenge conditions. If we win the toss, we’ll again bowl first if that is what is required. You’ll be fighting against a wall if you’re fighting against conditions.”
On whether India would test its bench: “Not so sure about that because it’s pretty much like how we played the Champions Trophy. We take one game at a time. What suits us to win that particular game will be what we’ll look to do.”
On the role spin will play: “It’s not just about spin; it’s about conditions as well. It’s what’s going around in global cricket. Everybody is playing to their strengths and not really prepared to test the other waters. They come here and if you’re looking at playing more spinners, that’s probably the way forward.”
On the threat Glenn Maxwell poses: “They’re a side any team will be threatened by. They have some quality batters and really quick bowlers. Maxwell has been playing some awesome cricket, in real honesty. I heard a few words, that he’s a free spirit. He just comes and keeps banging, you don’t know what happens. When somebody is in such form, you have to take your hat off and say he’s done pretty well.”

India’s spinners have been among the standout performers of the World T20, helping their side become the first to make the semi-finals by setting up three successive victories over Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh. While Amit Mishra has dismissed most batsmen for his team, R Ashwin has been harder to score off, his three wickets coming at an economy-rate of 5.16.Not too long ago, Ashwin had a return of two wickets in nine matches in South Africa and New Zealand. Back in more helpful conditions in the subcontinent, he had a good Asia Cup during which he took nine wickets from four games at an economy-rate of 4.21.After the semi-final spot was sealed with the win over Bangladesh, MS Dhoni said India’s spinners had prospered in conditions which had given them some purchase. There has been decent turn and some bounce, but it is not that they have just had to pitch the ball and let the surface do the rest. While the dew has not been as copious as it has been in Chittagong, it has been a factor, Ashwin said. What has worked for the Indians is that they have varied their speeds, according to the offspinner.”It’s a bit of variation in pace more than anything else,” Ashwin said. “That’s what I’ve been looking to do – vary the length and vary the pace. You slow it down, you can get a bit of purchase. There were a few occasions when I slowed it down and the ball actually spun the other way (against Bangladesh). So I don’t know what it is. The wicket is quite slow. You can’t say it’s been gripping. Obviously a leggie bowling over the top and slowing it down will give some revs on any wicket. That is one advantage but if you’re prepared to slow it down and take pace off the ball, you’re in with a chance here.In death over, you have to be prepared to swallow your ego, says R Ashwin•AFP

“There’s been a conscious effort to vary the pace, not just slow it down. I’ve been bowling at different paces – 100kmph to 80 to 75. That’s what I’ve been looking at, and trying to use the crease much more – whatever cues I took from the Asia Cup.”Tossing it up slowly and tempting batsmen has worked wonders for Mishra in the tournament , making him one of India’s “potent forces”, Ashwin said. “As a combination, every bowling unit benefits from each other’s success and bowling strengths. Amit has been one of our potent forces in this tournament. We’ve been using him in all the situations where they actually have to go for it. He doesn’t give you a lot of pace so when the batsmen are going after him, it’s a big chance. Because he’s going to slow it down even more.”Ashwin himself has often been used by Dhoni at the start as well as the closing stages of an innings, both times where batsmen are looking to get after bowlers. When asked how his approach changed on both occasions, Ashwin said that at the death, a bowler needed to “swallow his ego” so that he could restrict the batsmen.”When you’re starting off, you look to bowl as many good balls as possible in the areas you want. The disadvantage with that is that a good ball can be hit for four with less amount of risk because of the fielders not being on the fence. Whereas in the death, you have to be – this is my take on it, not that this is how it has to be – swallowing your ego and trying to make sure you’re not giving runs away. Because there are people around who want to pick wickets at that time. For me, it’s about swallowing your ego and making sure you’ve done the situation bit pretty well.”At the start of the Bangladesh innings, Ashwin did toss it up liberally, and picked up two wickets in two balls, his return of 4-0-15-2 making him the Man of the Match. Ashwin said such recognition did increase a bowler’s confidence, the same way it did for a batsman. “For a batter who has not got runs for five-six games to actually get runs and get a man-of-the-match award – it’s going to really boost his confidence. It’s the same for a bowler. Unless you appraise the bowler with something like that you’ll never find good bowlers coming through. That is one thing I really believe in. As much as a batsman is important, a bowler’s confidence is also important. In that regard, yes, it’s a big boost. But I’ve been living with it for the last three-four years, so I’m used to it right now.”

Tavare does family name proud with ton

Several names of times past reappeared last season. Cowdrey, Shrewsbury, Procter, were among the famous names to once again grace the county game. Tavare is the latest and 24-year-old Will did the family name proud with a century on his first-class debut.Chris Tavaré played 31 Tests for England in the 1980s and his nephew, Will, hinted at following in his footsteps with an unbeaten century to give Gloucestershire a strong start to the 2014 season.Chris enjoyed a fine career for Kent and Somerset with almost 25,000 first-class runs. Will showed a similar appetite by seizing his chance in just his second first-class match to become the eighth Gloucestershire player to make a century on debut.Joining a club including David Shepherd, Andrew Symonds, Chris Taylor, Craig Spearman, Hamish Marshall and Ed Cowan is a good way to begin a career.Tavare was only included in the XI at the last moment after wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick – supposedly the answer to Gloucestershire’s troubles in finding a regular gloveman – was ruled out injured. Tavare ensured he was not missed and took his chance with a 198-ball ton.Hampshire will say it should not have happened. He was dropped twice, one of them a straightforward chance to first slip off Matt Coles when just 32. But he survived to add 163 in 47 with his captain Michael Klinger – the Australian returning for the second season of his two year deal with Gloucestershire very keen to extend his stay.Klinger made 81 off 168 balls before being caught behind off Hampshire’s new South African signing, Kyle Abbott who struck two balls later to remove Alex Gidman for a duck as Gloucestershire lost two wickets just before tea. Hamish Marshall followed after the break for only four as James Tomlinson picked up his second wicket of the day after dismissing Chris Dent in the seventh over for his 300th first-class wicket for Hampshire.A wobble took Gloucestershire from 180 for 1 for 186 for 4 and threatened to undo the work of Tavare and Klinger but the ever-dependable Will Gidman made a steady half-century and raised a century stand with Tavare as Gloucestershire rebuilt to almost claim a third batting point before the close. Gidman couldn’t last to the end of the day, being caught behind as Sean Ervine took the second new ball but Hampshire have not done enough damage to justify deciding to bowl first.

'We take corruption personally' – Clarke, Harris

Ryan Harris has said he has taken cricket’s current corruption storm personally, and Michael Clarke expressed hope the game’s followers did not now assume that every match now needed to be viewed through cynical eyes

Daniel Brettig21-May-2014

Michael Clarke: “I don’t think we should be tarring all the players with the same brush as well.”•Associated Press

Ryan Harris bowled himself halfway to crippledom for Australia last summer, culminating in a Cape Town effort where he routinely charged in on a right knee that sported fragments of bone visible through the skin. Two months later, he confesses that surgery has allowed him to walk properly for the first time “in about two years” though it will likely cost him a place in the Test squad to face Pakistan. In that same Newlands Test match, Michael Clarke was battered by Morne Morkel and later revealed to have carried a fractured shoulder through the latter part of his unbeaten 161. Since then he has weathered plentiful criticism about a level of aggression on the field that suggests he wants to win a little too much, rather than too little.Little wonder then that Harris said he has taken cricket’s current corruption storm personally, and that Clarke spoke with pained idealism that he hoped the game’s followers did not now assume that every match now needed to be viewed through cynical eyes. Australia are presently the world’s top Test and ODI team, and neither Harris nor Clarke want to contemplate the possibility that they are at the pinnacle of a rotten game.”I’ve been out there and done my best, my teammates have, it’s just a very unfortunate thing that we’re talking about corruption,” Harris said. “Corruption in any sport I think is wrong and it damages the credibility of the sport. That’s something that as players we take personally, because every time we go out as an Australian cricket team, and I know a lot of other teams do as well, they go out to win.”Clarke expressed no worry whatsoever that any of his Australia team-mates, past or present, had dabbled in the kinds of fixes daubed across the pages of the world’s press this week. “I’m extremely confident about the players that I’ve played with,” Clarke said. “For this Australian team they all know very clearly that there is no room for corruption in our team. A big part of our job is to uphold the integrity of our sport and I think we do that well.”Everybody involved in the game is disappointed that things like this happen but I want to pay credit to the ICC and Cricket Australia for the work they put in to try and stop this, stamp it out of our game. Players have a big role to play as well, making sure that if you are approached or if something does come up, to go and speak to your captain, your team manager, the people at Cricket Australia.”I don’t think we should be tarring all the players with the same brush as well. What we’ve seen of late it’s a minority that we’re dealing with in these type of issues. I’d be disappointed if the supporters and the fans of cricket think that this is happening a lot more than it is. I am very proud of what this current team has done and achieved and I think we are educated well on what is right and wrong.”Australia’s players, both international and domestic, have been the beneficiaries of comprehensive education on corruption issues down the years. Clarke made his debut for Australia in 2003, and has watched the growth of integrity procedures from their initial concentration on Test and ODI players to the wider net now cast to ensure all those entering into the Sheffield Shield, limited overs and Big Bash League competitions were fully aware of what not to do and what to report.”What was I, 21, when I played my first ODI for Australia? And I think it probably started then in regards to international cricket,” Clarke said. “But these days you get educated from a very young age. Once you come into the first-class system, even on a rookie contract, so for some guys it starts at 16 years of age. I think the educational process that Australian cricketers go through is extremely thorough – we know the differences between right and wrong and what is accepted and what isn’t.”More unsettling for payers traversing the world for domestic Twenty20 tournaments, in addition to their international commitments, is the realisation that they cannot always be sure the inexplicable run-out, the surprising dropped catch or the heedless wide may all have far more deliberate and sinister implications. Harris admitted that hindsight was now murkier than it once was.”It’s a tough question … you don’t know,” Harris said. “For me I’ve played to win and it’s not until afterwards you find out that things have gone wrong or things are under suspicion. At the time I don’t think of it, no one thinks of it.”For Harris, Clarke and other honourable competitors, that uncertainty is every bit as uncomfortable as the physical ailments they have so often pushed through in pursuit of victory. Because if the game isn’t pure, is it really worth such pain?
