Despite the massive influx of spending throughout the summer transfer window, Arsenal star Bukayo Saka still remains as one of the club’s key men in 2025/26.

The academy graduate has worked his way through the youth system, before cementing his place in the first team squad – racking up over 250 appearances for his boyhood side.

However, last season was one tarnished by injury for the 23-year-old, suffering a hamstring injury back in December that would see him miss nearly four months of Premier League action.

The Englishman still managed to end the year on 25 goal contributions in his 37 appearances across all competitions – helping the side reach the Champions League semi-finals.

If the Gunners are to win England’s top-flight under Mikel Arteta’s guidance, he will need to be joined by numerous players at the Emirates – as seen by their attempts in the market as of late.

Arsenal’s hunt for reinforcements to help Saka

Despite £200m being spent this summer, Arsenal have made a move to land Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie over recent days – with Spurs also interested in the defender’s signature.

It’s been claimed that the player himself has already held talks with Arteta over a switch to the Emirates, and potentially been keen on a switch to England – but could cost around £52m to prise him away from the German outfit.

However, he’s not the only player currently in their sights, with Girona right-back Arnau Martinez another star they’re considering, according to one journalist.

He claims that the Gunners have made a €10m (£8.5m) offer to land the Spaniard, who made 40 appearances in 2024/25 – including five in the Champions League.

It’s currently unclear whether the player or his current employers are open to the move, but Arteta’s side appear to be making key moves for the youngster’s signature.

Why Arsenal’s latest target would be perfect for Saka

Whilst the new season is only two games old, winger Saka has already managed to impress for Arsenal – playing a role in the side being top of the table at present.

The England international has already opened his account for the 2025/26 season, scoring in the recent outing against Leeds United – helping Arteta’s men claim a 5-0 victory.

However, his progress may appear to be halted after he limped off in the same game with a hamstring issue – an injury that massively restricted him in the previous campaign.

It’s unclear how long the winger will be sat on the sidelines for, but the manager will be hoping that it will only be fatigue and not another serious issue, given his previous struggles.

Upon his return to action, he could be handed a boost in his attempts for individual and team success – especially if the hierarchy land a deal for current target Martinez.

Whilst the youngster is a full-back by trade, he’s managed to impress in possession over recent months, which could provide Saka with added opportunities in front of goal.

Martinez, who’s been labelled “complete” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, ranked in the 91st percentile for progressive passes (5.6) and the 92nd percentile for passes into the final third (5.3).

Such numbers showcase the talent he possesses with the ball at his feet, subsequently being comfortable in possession – something which is a need in Arteta’s possession-based system.

However, given his defensive role, he also needs to be able to thrive out of possession – but that’s no issue, with Martinez displaying such talent in abundance.

He made 1.8 tackles per 90 in LaLiga last season, along with 1.1 interceptions made per 90, having the tools to add another option to the Gunners’ impressive backline, which has been the best in the division for the last two years.

If a deal can be agreed at the rumoured £8.5m fee, it would be another superb piece of business – especially given his tender age of 22, which could see him improve further in the years ahead.

Such a deal would also benefit Saka massively, offering the youngster another opportunity to build on his impressive figures at the Emirates in the past few campaigns.

With the deadline approaching, Aston Villa have reportedly set their sights on a shock late hijack to sign a player who is already in the final stages of a move to Manchester United.

Latest on Aston Villa targets

It’s been a difficult summer for Aston Villa. Not only have they been limited by PSR issues, but they’ve also missed out on targets when they have attempted to welcome incomings – the latest of which being George Mikautadze. Reports emerged that Villa had agreed personal terms with the Lyon forward, before Villarreal swooped in to agree a late deal.

The fact that Unai Emery revealed that he wants two players in every position indicates that Villa could work on further deals before the end of the window, but it remains to be seen just who arrives.

The Spaniard told reporters: “The club are working hard to get our structure as strong as possible with the players in the squad, trying to get two players for each position. There is still work to do, maybe even some players leaving more and we will have to sign and complete the squad with some players.

“The first reason now why we are missing something other in our structure and in our squad with our players because some players left one week or two weeks ago when we were expecting to a deal before.”

Since those words, rumours have suggested that former loanee Marco Asensio could be on his way back to the club, whilst a shock hijack on Manchester United could also take place.

Aston Villa eyeing late Lammens hijack

As reported by The Daily Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Aston Villa are now eyeing a last-ditch move to sign Senne Lammens ahead of Manchester United. Earlier reports from Sacha Tavolieri revealed that the Royal Antwerp goalkeeper is closing in on a move to Old Trafford and the transfer is in the “final stages”. The door, however, is still ajar for Villa to swoop in.

It would be an almighty blow for the Red Devils, but an excellent hijack by Aston Villa. The talented shot-stopper would instantly become the long-term successor to Emiliano Martinez, whose future is far from guaranteed in the Midlands these days.

Devon Conway became the second batter to be retired out in IPL 2025, after Tilak Varma in Mumbai Indians’ (MI) chase against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) earlier in the tournament. On Tuesday, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pulled out Conway when he failed to get a move on with the asking rate against Punjab Kings (PBKS) rising. But, in the opinion of Piyush Chawla and Wasim Jaffer, CSK might have waited too long for the decision to have an effect on the result.”Conway is the kind of batter who is more technically strong and he doesn’t try to play that [many shots] in the air. You saw that in the middle overs also, when he was trying to hit a pull shot also, he was rolling his wrists like a proper technical batsman,” Chawla said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show. “That’s where they missed that point. When Shivam [Dube] was trying to hit those bit shots, Conway didn’t even try that. At one point, I felt he just wanted to take it deep. “You expect that change [of gears] to happen at some point of time when you know the batsman is struggling,” Gaikwad said of the decision at the presentation ceremony. “Initially we thought that he was still striking the ball [well]. We waited, waited until we thought it was necessary and then we thought, yes, why not change.””If they wanted to do that, they could have done that at least two-three overs before that also,” Chawla said. “Because if he is not getting those big shots, you want somebody to come in and you want to give that kind of a sighter, at least two to three balls, and then got for it. Speaking in 2024, with quotes provided by Give Me Sport, Shearer claimed that Dalglish’s decision to sell Les Ferdinand in 1997 was among the worst calls in Newcastle’s history.

Shearer is spot on in his assessment regarding Ferdinand, and while he clearly still sees Dalglish as a hero of his own, there is no question that selling his former attacking teammate was a bad call looking back.

Ferdinand and Shearer were devastating together, with both scoring in the iconic 5-0 win at home to Manchester United in the Premier League in 1996, and the former still had plenty of years left in him.

Granted, the Englishman was 30 years of age when Newcastle opted to move him on to Tottenham, but he showed over a six-year spell in north London that he could have continued scoring goals for the Magpies.
