Opportunities galore as Harmanpreet looks to build team for T20 World Cup

“I want this team to grow in a way that everyone says that this is the best team,” says India captain

Harmanpreet: We need to think about having a third pacer in the side

India have started preparing for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup and captain Harmanpreet Kaur wants to “build” for the event by giving the new faces in the T20I squad “as many opportunities as possible” to prove themselves on the big stage. The selection, in the end, will not only be about their performances on the field but also how they contribute off it, she said.”Whichever player you play with, you will know how they can contribute to the team just by looking at their body language and the way they think about cricket,” Harmanpreet said ahead of the second T20I against England in Mumbai. “Just like how there’s no surety about anything in life, we also can’t be always sure about a player. At the same time, it’s about how they improve by the day and how they help the team win, all that is important. All that also plays a role in how many opportunities you want to give a player.”In the team there are so many youngsters now who have done well in domestic [cricket] and WPL. We’ve picked those who have done well in T20s. We want to build this team. We have so many matches coming up. As a captain, I want to build this team. The support staff is also balanced now. Amol [Muzumdar, head coach] has so much experience as player and coach. When all these things are sorted, you know that you just need to go out there and play. As a captain, I have a lot of trust and belief. They are the best and that’s why they are here. I want to give them as many opportunities as I can because they are the best right now. I want them to do well for the country.”Allrounder Shreyanka Patil and left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque, who were among the breakout stars at the inaugural WPL this year, received maiden call-ups for the T20Is series against England, while youngsters Titas Sadhu, Kanika Ahuja and Mannat Kashyap have also been named in the squad. Patil and Ishaque made their India debuts in the first T20I, where the hosts lost by 38 runs, and finished with decent returns. Patil bagged two wickets, while Ishaque dismissed the on-song Danni Wyatt for 75.Related

Ishaque, 28, had finished the WPL as the joint-second-highest wicket-taker and was also the top wicket-taker in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy this season with 18 wickets in nine matches. Twenty-one-year-old Patil, meanwhile, impressed for India A leading up to the T20I series, picking up five wickets in three games. She also had a prolific Women’s CPL in March, where she was the only Indian and ended up being the highest wicket-taker, with nine wickets in five games.Harmanpreet was clear the duo needs to make use of these opportunities to cement their spot at next year’s T20 World Cup, which is slated for September-October in Bangladesh. Following the England series, India are set to play a full series against Australia at home, which includes three T20Is.”The team which we have picked for this T20I [series] is the one we want to build for the upcoming World Cup,” she said. “Saika and Shreyanka have done really well in the last game. They’re quite confident and after the game we did sit with them and discuss what best they can do in the upcoming games. For them, they just need opportunities and so many opportunities are there now. They just need to go out there and execute in the best way.”Saika Ishaque was impressive in WPL 2023•Getty Images

India suffered heartbreak at the T20 World Cup this year, losing to Australia in a close encounter in the semi-final. They also came close in 2018 (semi-final) and 2020 (final). Harmanpreet, who is now a globally recognised player – she is one of BBC’s 100 Women and Time Magazine’s 100 Next this year – has only one thing on her mind: to win a World Cup for India.”I want this team to grow in a way that everyone says that this is the best team,” she said. “For me winning a World Cup is a dream and I’m just working towards that and that is the only reason I requested BCCI to get a young team. These games are very important. England are not going to give us anything easily. So we are putting ourselves under pressure. We want to work hard towards that and I don’t count my personal achievements to any level because I’m playing a team sport. If the team is doing well I’m happy.”At the same time, when you’re not feeling great, you see people are you telling ‘you’ve done this and that’ to make you feel good. For me, team performance and winning a World Cup for the country is very important, and my aim is towards that. I just want us to stay together and grow together and do something great for our country.”In the first T20I, India fielded only two fast bowlers in the XI, whereas the spinners bowled 12 overs and were expensive. Fast bowler Renuka Singh returned to international cricket after close to 10 months and impressed immediately with figures of 3 for 27 while medium pacer Pooja Vastrakar went for 44 runs in her four overs. Sadhu, the other fast bowler in the squad, was out ill. Harmanpreet said that spin was among India’s strong suits and trusted her spinners to come good, adding that Sadhu “should be ready” for the second game to bring more balance to the side.”In our domestic set-up so many spin bowlers are doing really well. It’s something which has always been our strength. Among pacers, Renuka is doing really well, other end Pooja is helping her. At the same time, Titas was not well. She should be ready for the next game and secondly, I feel spinners are more confident and they’ve always done really well whenever they’ve got the opportunity. That’s why we went with the spin attack.”

Chaudhary's fifty in vain for Hurricanes as Heat win thriller

Heat moved to 14 points with the win and are now assured of a finals berth

Brisbane Heat have beaten Hobart Hurricanes by one run to remain undefeated and wrap up a BBL finals spot in a rain-interrupted low-scoring thriller at the Gabba. The Hurricanes needed 13 runs from the final over and three off the final delivery, but skipper Nathan Ellis could manage just a single off the last ball as Pat Dooley was run out.The Hurricanes restricted the Heat to 132 for 7 but were soon 22 for 4 in reply. Rain forced the players off after 4.4 overs and the target was revised to 118 from 16 overs.Heat late-over specialist Spencer Johnson (2-21 off three overs) took two wickets in the penultimate over, including the dangerous Tim David (27 off 21).Hurricanes allrounder Nikhil Chaudhary (55 off 38) walloped a six and four from the opening two deliveries of the final over before falling to Heat seamer Paul Walter, who kept a cool head when the pressure was on.The Heat had the perfect start with the ball.Michael Neser had Caleb Jewell (4) caught at third man in his first over. Player of the Match Xavier Bartlett (3-30) then dismissed Macalister Wright and Sam Hain for ducks with consecutive deliveries with both batters nicking superbly directed away cutters.Corey Anderson (two) was cleaned up by a rampant Bartlett and the Hurricanes were on the ropes. They finished on 116 for 9 after David and Chaudhary almost got them home.Earlier Heat skipper Colin Munro top scored with 56 from 47 deliveries as Ellis rotated his bowlers superbly to prevent the hosts from getting away. After Ellis had won the bat flip, the Hurricanes’ seamers contained the Heat well in the early overs on a Gabba pitch that had plenty of zip in it.Riley Meredith, Ellis (2-23 off four) and England international Chris Jordan (3-19 off four) were all impressive. Jordan was in the zone and cleaned up Matt Renshaw (5) with a fast and straight ripper.Munro took a while to find his timing but when he did it was worth the wait with the New Zealander taking 20 runs from spinner Chaudhary’s second over, including two towering leg-side sixes. The Heat moved to 14 points with the win and are now assured of a finals berth. The Hurricanes are fifth on six points, two points behind fourth-placed Melbourne Stars who have played one more game.

Rahane called back by Assam after being given out obstructing the field

Assam withdrew the appeal during the tea break right after the dismissal and the decision was accepted by the umpires

Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane was given out obstructing the field for the first time in his 16-year professional career, before he was dramatically called back to bat because the opposition, Assam, withdrew the appeal in the last league game of the Ranji Trophy at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai.Rahane was batting on 18 with Mumbai on 102 for 4 in the last over before the scheduled tea break, when he drove his 52nd delivery, from Assam fast bowler and debutant Dibakar Johri, to mid-on and took off for a single. But by the time his batting partner Shivam Dube denied the single and sent Rahane back, Assam captain Denish Das fired in a throw at the keeper’s end and hit Rahane who was trying to get back to the crease. The Assam players went up in an appeal immediately for “obstructing the field” and Rahane was given out by the on-field umpire on the fourth ball of the 25th over. Tea was taken two balls early with Mumbai 102 for 5 in reply to Assam’s 84 all out.Related

However, Assam decided to withdraw the appeal during the tea break and told the umpires as much. As per the laws, the appeal for a dismissal needs to be withdrawn before the next ball is bowled and has to be accepted by the umpires for the batter to be recalled. Luckily for Rahane, there was a break in play after his temporary dismissal and both teams were back in the dressing room. The withdrawal of the appeal was accepted by the umpires and Rahane walked out to bat again about 20 minutes later.Shardul Thakur later said Rahane was reluctant to bat again “because his ethics didn’t allow him,” but also explained what he saw on the replays in the dressing room, which could have led to the withdrawal of the appeal.”We were playing the video [in the dressing room] and all we saw was he turned and he was running in a straight line,” Thakur said after the day’s play. “So at no point he changed his direction. The only direction that was changed was when he took that turn and after that he didn’t change his direction looking at the ball and he wasn’t trying to obstruct the field. But yes umpires felt that he could be given out since the throw was aimed at the stumps but I think the Assam coach also saw the video and he didn’t feel Rahane had done it purposely and obstructed the throw.”Thakur emphasised that Rahane had not changed his direction while running because as per Law 37.1, as stated by the MCC, “Either batter is out Obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances of 37.2, and while the ball is in play, he/she wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.” Law 37.2 further states: “A batter shall not be out Obstructing the field if the obstruction or distraction is accidental, or the obstruction is in order to avoid injury…”Thakur further said the Assam coach Trevor Gonsalves walked up to the Mumbai dressing room during the tea break to “apologise” for the appeal and asked Rahane to resume batting after the break.”They wanted to withdraw the appeal and since it was tea time, they couldn’t convey it immediately but their coach walked up to us and he said, ‘we apologise for the appeal because it was in the heat of the moment and we want to withdraw the appeal.’ He conveyed the same thing to the umpires also and probably it was mutually agreed that Rahane would go on to bat. But Ajinkya was not keen on going back again because he said once he’s given out, it’s out. But we convinced him that if it’s not out then you can go and bat again and if you do that, it’ll be for the team. His ethics didn’t allow him to do that but for the team it was needed that he goes back again and bats.”Rahane padded up again and went out with Dube but couldn’t capitalise on his luck and was bowled by the same bowler four overs after the tea break. He survived only 17 more deliveries and was eventually sent back for 22 off 69 balls.Rahane had earlier struck three fours in his innings – two through the covers and one wide of mid-on – and was reviving Mumbai’s innings with Dube after they were 60 for 4 in the 16th over. Their partnership was worth 50 off 77 deliveries, including 16 runs from Rahane, 30 from Dube and four extras.Rahane has so far had an unimpressive Ranji season with just 112 runs from eight innings at an average of 16.00. He had missed two league games with injuries when the team was led by Shams Mulani against Bihar and by Dube against Bengal.Assam were earlier bowled out in just 32.1 overs as Shardul Thakur, who returned from a niggle in the last round, ran through the visitors with figures of 6 for 21 from 10.1 overs after Mumbai had opted to bowl.It was Thakur’s first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket in two years and he was playing only his second Ranji game of the season after recovering from an ankle niggle that had kept him out of action for a few weeks. He said he was now back to full fitness and ready to bowl as many overs as required in a day.”All I tried to do was pitch in the right areas and once we got a couple of wickets, the whole idea was to take four to five wickets before lunch time,” he said. “We weren’t targeting them to take all 10 wickets but the whole idea was to take as many wickets we could and if we could take five wickets in a session that would be brilliant. Shams also chipping in after my spell, he got those two wickets, and the last three or four wickets were the icing on the cake.Mumbai are currently leading the Group B table with 30 points after four wins, one draw and a loss from six games and have already qualified for the quarter-finals.

Yorkshire granted women's Tier 1 team from 2026, one year ahead of schedule

ECB change plans after outcry about omission of largest county from initial competition

Yorkshire, England’s largest county, will be granted a Tier 1 women’s team from 2026 onwards, in time for the second year of the new domestic competition, following a rethink by the ECB board.Yorkshire was initially overlooked when the ECB unveiled its eight host counties for the competition’s inaugural year in 2025, with Durham instead chosen to represent England’s northern-most region. They were due to be added to an expanded ten-team competition in 2027, along with Glamorgan, with Richard Gould, the ECB chair, insisting that the club was not being “punished for past sins” following their long-standing racism scandal. That, however, was met with widespread criticism within Yorkshire, notably from the club’s first female president, Jane Powell, who told the Yorkshire Post that the decision ignored “logic or facts”, including the presence of 313 women’s and girl’s teams within the county. The impact on the current playing squad at the Headingley-based Northern Diamonds was also a consideration in the ECB’s change of heart, with Lauren Winfield-Hill last week telling Wisden’s Women’s Cricket Weekly podcast how “unsettled” the players had been at the prospect of relocation. Now, the ECB has decided that Yorkshire’s elevation to Tier 1 will take place a year ahead of schedule, and with their funding increasing to £1.5 million per year from 2026, subject to a series of conditions relating to governance, strategy and finance. Earlier this week, Colin Graves, Yorkshire’s chair, issued a warning about the club’s levels of debt, currently in the region of £20 million, adding that a process of demutualisation “appears essential to the club’s future”.Related

ECB Director of Women’s Professional Game Beth Barrett-Wild said: “We talked in April about the strength of the bids brought to the ECB and about the pace with which we all want the game to progress to the next level.”Yorkshire’s desire to be part of Tier 1 as soon as possible is clear, and we believe it’s the best decision for them, the women’s game, and most importantly for the players as they enter a phase of contract negotiation, to provide as much certainty as we can about the introduction timeline for both Yorkshire and Glamorgan.”As Yorkshire are existing regional hosts they are starting from a different position to Glamorgan, who we think will benefit from having two years between 2025-2027 to develop their talent pathway across Wales and experience running a women’s senior team in Tier 2. This extra lead-in time will therefore enable them to establish a solid platform from which to build a competitive Tier 1 team and proposition in due course.”We look forward to getting the new three-tiered structure underway next summer, and setting in motion the next exciting stage of women’s professional domestic cricket.”The new women’s structure, which builds on the existing Regional model, will be spread across three Tiers, but with no promotion or relegation for the duration of the first four seasons up to and including 2028.
