James Anderson nears his End-game with a rare point left to prove

Living legend returns to XI with Ashes on the line, and a number of career loose-ends to tie up

Vithushan Ehantharajah18-Jul-2023″Is he not on there?!” asked a confused Ben Stokes, turning to look at the placard fixed behind him on the wall of the Emirates Old Trafford press conference room. “Got to say I’m amazed at that, yeah.”He might have an End named after him here, but “James Anderson” does not appear on the international honours board. Which is odd, considering this is his home ground, Manchester’s characteristic cloud cover, and the fact his record here is pretty good. And yet those 37 dismissals at 22.02 in 10 previous appearances have not featured one five-wicket haul. “It would be nice to get his name up on the board,” Stokes added. That might be a side-quest at any other time in Anderson’s career. But upon his return to the side after missing the victorious third Test, with England 2-1 down in the Ashes, it feels more like a wrong he could do with righting sooner rather than later. It’s no great stretch to say this will be Anderson’s last appearance at his home ground, and no longer too big a reach to suggest this may be his penultimate Test cap outright. Predicting his end has always been a fool’s errand. But off the back of an indifferent start of three wickets at 75.33 across the first two matches of this series, the idea that a player who turns 41 on day four of next week’s Oval Test might be on the way out has a bit more behind it.While Stokes has spent the week between Leeds and Manchester fixing his cultural blindspots with a first watch of “The Godfather”, the don of seam and swing has been going through his usual pre-match tapering with a bit more gusto.James Anderson is all smiles on the eve of his Test recall at Old Trafford•Getty Images

He used his column in to state he does not claim a right to a spot in the XI, adding that “nostalgia” would have no bearing on his selection. With Ollie Robinson always likely to sit this one out after a back spasm in the first innings at Headingley, not picking Anderson off the back of two low performances – particularly when he’s had three chances missed off his bowling – would have been to ignore his sizeable body of work from the previous 179. He finds himself in a unique spot – 12 away from 700 Test dismissals and yet engaged in an unexpected battle to re-state his worth for the first time in well over a decade.”When you’re a world-class performer for such a long period of time, you can understand the frustration for him that he has not felt like he contributed,” Stokes said. “Even when Jimmy doesn’t feel like he’s contributing, you look at what he’s doing in terms of the run-rate, even without that being his goal.”He’s such a high-quality performer, he doesn’t really bowl bad balls and the pressure he can put on the opposition can create chances at the other end. He’s not taken nearly 700 wickets without going through two games of not feeling at his best. World-class performers bounce back and deliver. I’ve got no doubt that at some point this week Jimmy Anderson will be very crucial for us.”It was not that long ago – well, the start of the summer – when even Stuart Broad assumed he would be the half of the talismanic new-ball duo to play the bit-part role. And yet Broad’s 16 wickets – the most on either side – at 24.93 has covered for his partner’s indifferent displays. Nothing typified the shift in status more than the Edgbaston Test, in which Anderson did not take the new ball at home for the first time in 14 years in the first innings, then went unused for the final 36.3 overs of the second as Australia triumphed by two wickets.Related

Whisper it quietly but Zak Crawley is so far nailing this Ashes

This feels like the start of Anderson’s series in earnest. The side feels in a better place, the pitches far better suited to his craft. He remains in good spirits, vibing with this squad as much as ever. While a handful of England players and staff based in the north headed home after the day-four finish in Headingley, Anderson stuck around to celebrate a memorable win. During the match, he assisted bowling coach David Saker, plucking golden nuggets out of his knowledge for the benefit of others. Now, he’ll need to dig deep for himself.Of course, winning the urn itself – for now, maintaining its live status for the Oval finale – is motivation enough, but he does have a couple of other offshoots to improve. He was injured on the first morning of 2019’s opening Test, meaning his last successful Ashes Test was at Edgbaston in 2015. And weirdly, his average against Australia is better away (34.01) than it is at home (36.06).As we approach what we fear is the end, even if he doesn’t, the side-quests and quirks to address are all rolled into the main objective. With the Ashes on the line, England have the unique luxury of calling upon a living great with a point to prove on his home ground.

Farooqi provides the spark as Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in the rain

The hosts were kept to 169 for 9 in a 43-over match in Chattogram

In between three rain breaks, Afghanistan sneaked a fine bowling performance to beat Bangladesh by 17 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the ODI series. Play was suspended in Chattogram for a total of three hours and 15 minutes, reducing the game to 43-overs-a-side. But even that wasn’t possible. A final downpour at 9.33pm forced everyone off the field with the visitors on 83 for 2 in 21.4 overs, and since that was 17 runs more than the DLS par score at that point of the innings, they were declared the winners.Fazalhaq Farooqi was the pick of the Afghanistan bowlers, taking 3 for 24 to continue the form he showed in the ODI series here last year. Their spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman also put Bangladesh under pressure, combining to take five wickets for 69 runs in 24 overs. They offered relief as well, with 24 extras in three dropped catches, but the home side couldn’t take advantage. Only Towhid Hridoy stood firm, making his third ODI fifty, but there was hardly any support from the other end. Bangladesh were guilty of several soft dismissals, as they collapsed from a potentially strong 103 for 3 to 169 for 9 in 43 overs. The groundstaff of the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, who were tireless in peeling and unpeeling the large tarps that covered most of the 30-yard circle to protect it from the rain, deserve high praise. Credit should also go to the near capacity crowd that struck around for most of the game, despite there being very little overhead cover at the ground. They had to scamper to the staircases to save themselves from the rain that swept in from south. The players they came to see though didn’t do them any favours. Merely flattered to deceive. Because apart from Tamim Iqbal’s dismissal in the seventh over, Bangladesh were actually going at a good pace in the first 20 overs.Tamim Iqbal leaves the field with his team-mates as the rain sets in•AFP/Getty Images

Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto promised plenty of runs, hitting five boundaries, including a six. But when they fell within six balls of each other – Litton timing a pull straight to deep square leg and Shanto top-edging a sweep to short fine leg – Bangladesh started to slow down.Shakib Al Hasan was focused on seeing out a few overs – a tactic that became necessary due to the stop-start nature of the game ever since the first rain break after 15.1 overs of play – but it gave Afghanistan an opening and they took full advantage. The fourth wicket added just 37 runs in 65 balls. Shakib himself laboured to 15 off 37 – his slowest ODI innings in eight years (min 30 balls) – before Nabi had him caught at cover. Rashid removed Mushfiqur Rahim for the tenth time in competitive cricket, a half-tracker slipping through the batter’s legs, glancing the inner thigh and hitting the stumps. Afghanistan’s legspin ace also got Afif Hossain lbw, with a little help from DRS, and when Farooqi returned to take out Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh’s batting was in freefall. After another rain break, Taskin fell lbw to Mujeeb before Towhid became Farooqi’s third wicket of the day. Mustafizur Rahman dead-batting what turned out to be the last over of the innings raised a few laughs but mainly it just summed up a poor show from Bangladesh, especially in the last 20 overs when they could only manage three runs an over.It wasn’t that Afghanistan didn’t offer up chances. Mujeeb dropped a return catch from Shanto on 10. Wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz dropped Hridoy when he was 16 off the same bowler, while in the last over, Rashid dropped Hasan Mahmud, though that last one didn’t really count much.Afghanistan also took a watchful approach to their 164-run chase. Openers Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran struck just four boundaries between them as they added 54 runs in 15.3 overs before Shanto had Gurbaz caught at short midwicket. He made 22 off 45 balls with just one four.Taskin then had Rahmat Shah caught at slip where Litton took a good low catch. Ibrahim ended up not out on 41 off 58 balls with five fours. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi accompanied him when the third rain break came, unbeaten on nine off 13 balls.

Originals jump to fourth on the back of Overton and Mir heroics

Mir’s four-for proved too much for Superchargers after Overton smacked an unbeaten 83 off just 30 balls

Jamie Overton smashed a superb 83 to lead the Manchester Originals to a dominant 40-run victory against the Northern Superchargers at Headingley.Overton’s maiden T20 fifty, which included nine fours and six sixes, was assisted by some fantastic spin bowling by Pakistan international Usama Mir, who took four for 19.Originals struggled with the new ball as they lost captain Jos Buttler and fellow opener Phil Salt in Reece Topley’s first 10 deliveries, with the England left-armer finishing with figures of three for 29. However, their progress with the ball was stemmed by brutal hitting from Overton.Superchargers did offer periods of resistance in their chase through Matthew Short and Saif Zaib, but Originals’ total of 182 proved far too much for the Leeds-based team.It was a second home defeat in three days for the Superchargers, who remained second on the table, while the Originals jumped from seventh to fourth.Having elected to bat at the toss, Originals had a nightmare start after Topley removed Salt, who had mistimed his shot which found Zaib at point, after only three balls. He then removed Originals captain Buttler for two, who edged a delivery into the gloves of Tom Banton.Originals then recovered with some powerful hitting from Laurie Evans, which included a delightful scoop shot for six off the bowling of David Wiese. After a rain delay, which meant the contest was reduced to 90 balls per side, Superchargers struck back with two wickets in two balls.Usama Mir jumps in celebration after dismissing Tom Banton•Stu Forster/Getty Images

First, Paul Walter departed for 22 after he skied a Brydon Carse delivery to a running Callum Parkinson at deep third, before Adil Rashid struck with his first ball to remove the dangerous Evans for 41 off 19 deliveries.Coming in at six, Overton smashed a Rashid delivery over the long-on boundary for six before Originals lost the wickets of overseas pair, Ashton Turner and Mir to Parkinson and Topley respectively. Then the Overton massacre began, in a partnership worth 72 with Tom Hartley, 62 of them came from the blade of the Surrey man, including a magnificent six from a Carse short ball, which sailed into the Western Terrace.Overton then hit the impressive Topley’s final set for 20, which included two fours and two sixes, to dent the figures of the tournament’s top wicket-taker. He then smashed 16 off the final set of the Originals’ innings to lead them to a total of 182 for six, with the all-rounder finishing not out on 83 from 30 balls. In their reply, Superchargers got off to a slow start, with just 18 runs coming from the first 15 balls.Australian Short hit the first six of the innings when he pulled a short ball from former Superchargers man Ben Raine over the ropes. The opener then hit a picture perfect cover drive for six before being bowled by the magical Mir for 37 off 16 balls. Two balls later, Mir took the wicket of the in-form Banton, who was bowled for 12 and then removed Adam Hose, after he tried to find the boundary with a reverse sweep, but could only find Walter at backward point.England’s Harry Brook looked good for 20, which included a six over the Rugby stand akin to Liam Livingstone’s one against Pakistan in 2021, but he became Mir’s fourth victim after he holed out to long-off.Superchargers’ hopes of victory then faltered, with only Zaib and Wayne Parnell putting up some resistance. The rest of the batting line-up departed cheaply to leave the Superchargers 141 for nine, resulting in a 40 run victory for Originals.
