Arsenal now leading Spurs in race to sign "extraordinary" £58m striker

Arsenal are now leading Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign an “extraordinary” striker, who has emerged as Mikel Arteta’s top target ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report.

Arteta's striker search

Arteta was known to be keen on signing a striker in January, with the likes of Ollie Watkins and Dušan Vlahović among the players linked with moves to north London, but it ultimately wasn’t possible to get a new forward through the door.

Since then, the Gunners’ title hopes have been seriously dented, with Kai Havertz being ruled out for the season, and they have now started to work on bringing in a new striker in the summer.

Plans have been put in place to hold talks with Inter’s Lautaro Martinez, who reportedly incoming sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be a big fan of, while Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is also known to be a target, with a number of Premier League clubs keen on the Nigerian.

Another striker who has attracted widespread interest is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with it recently being revealed that Arsenal are set to battle Tottenham for the forward’s signature.

However, according to a report from Football Insider, the Gunners have the edge over Spurs in the race to sign Sesko, as they have now moved ahead of their rivals in the race for his signature.

The north Londoners are said to be among the favourites to sign the Slovenian, who has now emerged as their top target for the summer transfer window.

Although the Leipzig star is contracted until 2029, there is a £58m release clause in his contract, which makes a summer move more likely – and he would prefer a move to Arsenal over Spurs.

"Extraordinary" Sesko impressing in Germany

The 21-year-old has scored 17 goals for Leipzig in all competitions this term, including four in the Champions League prior to his side’s exit from the competition, but he is far more than just a goalscorer.

Tony Cascarino has also praised the former RB Salzburg man for his dribbling ability, saying: “He will run at people and he will literally go around them.

“That’s the extraordinary thing he has got, I have not seen a 6 foot 5 player play like him. I have seen him in wide positions. He is not as traditional as a No 9, but he can certainly go into a deep area and pick up the ball and he will go past people.”

As such, it is exciting news that Arsenal are seemingly in a strong position to win the race for Sesko, and a release clause of just £58m seems very reasonable, given that he is young enough to lead the line for the Gunners for the next decade.

Andrew McDonald: Australia batters wilted under 'perceived pressure'

Chappell on the sweep shots: Australia panicked and did something not natural

Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald has described his side’s batting collapse in Delhi as “pretty poor”, but said he would not change anything about the pre-tour preparation despite Australia not playing a tour game in the lead-up to the first Test.Australia were 85 for 2, leading by 86, on the third morning of the Test before suffering a staggering collapse to lose eight wickets for 28 in 74 balls and be bowled out for 113. India knocked off the target of 115 prior to tea on the third day to take a 2-0 series lead.McDonald lamented that Australia’s batters had wilted under perceived pressure from a position of strength in the match. “We’ve got to be better than that, that’s the bottom line,” McDonald said. “We’ve got to own it and we are not here to shy away from the fact that wasn’t good enough.Related

India get the better of Australia, one flick at a time

“We felt like we had India in a really vulnerable position, it was the first time in the series we saw the fielders back and [R] Ashwin having to control the tempo. Usually it’s pretty much a ring field and hard to rotate the strike and we felt like Marnus [Labuschagne] and Smudge [Steven Smith] had the game in their control at 2 for 85 looking to extend that lead.”The rest was pretty plain to see, pretty poor.”It’s once again pressure and, in this case, more perceived pressure than anything. In the first game we were coming from a long way behind.”It felt like at times we wanted to rush to a total. We were in a hurry to build that lead and as we know here it is attritional cricket, you can do that over time. Our methods are going to be critiqued and rightfully so. There were some people who went clearly away from the game plan that made them successful over a period of time and that’s for us to own as a collective.”Andrew McDonald: ‘Some went away from the method they usually use’Much has been made of the fact that five of Australia’s eight wickets fell to a combination of sweeps and reverse sweeps. Those shots are part of the batting plans for some players in Australia’s squad including Usman Khawaja, Matthew Renshaw and Alex Carey, who all fell trying to execute their plans. But McDonald was more concerned about those that departed from their plans, with Smith and Pat Cummins both being dismissed playing wild sweeps when neither are regular sweepers.”You talk about sweeping, Uz was sweeping first innings and gets applauded for it, so there is a balance,” McDonald said. “Uz was outstanding sweeping and reverse-sweeping. Even Marn day two put [Ravindra] Jadeja under clear pressure with the sweep shot. We don’t want to go away from that as part of that method is finding that balance and you do need an element of good fortune on surfaces like that. There are a lot of balls that spin past the outside edge and I thought the way that Travis Head applied himself and his dismissal, he easily could have played and missed or found the edge and it goes down and then you get an opportunity to build your innings. There is an element of chance off the surface.”I’m not saying the conditions were diabolical by any stretch of the imagination. If you apply the method over a period of time, as we saw with Uz and Pete Handscomb, they did it totally differently.”Pete did it more on the vertical plane and Uz did it more on the horizontal plane with sweeps and reverse-sweeps. Everyone is going to have a different way of doing it and what we need to do is be clear on what works for the individual and it is clear that some went away from the method they usually use and you know who they are.”Australia did not play a tour game prior to the first Test in India. They instead opted for a weeklong camp in Bengaluru involving nets and centre-wickets for the batters to acclimatise to both spinning conditions in India and red-ball cricket after the entire batting group was playing T20 cricket in the BBL for three weeks prior to their departure to India. But McDonald said he would not change the preparation despite Australia folding for 177, 91, 263 and 113 across the four innings of the tour so far.”I still wouldn’t have changed what we did leading in, there’s no doubt about that,” he said. “I think they had really good preparation in Bangalore. So there’s not any excuses. I think at the end of day two, if you said our preparation was good, you’d probably have a different slant on it. But within an hour then people start to critique what happened in the past.”I think at that point in time that the preparation was really good and the way we’re going about our work was good. I don’t think that had a great bearing on what happened in that hour.”We were prepared for that and day three as well as we could have been, and we failed under the examination of India.”2:35

Chopra: Head is potentially Australia’s long-term Test opener

The challenge for McDonald and his coaching staff now is how do they turn things around ahead of the third Test in Indore to avoid Australia’s batters going in with a clouded mindset.”Does every ball have someone’s name on it? No, I don’t think so,” McDonald said. “There’s parts of the wicket that are very bearable for batting and we saw that.”I’m not sure how we clear their minds at this stage. The best way to clear the minds is to get away from the game for a couple of days for those who have been fully invested in those two Test matches. Other players will have different programmes and then we come back together again and build toward the next Test match.”Let’s not veer away from the fact we were in a strong position as well. So are we good enough? I think the answer to that is yes if we apply our best. Unfortunately for one hour of the game we were not at our best and you can lose it that quickly over here.”

Inclusive, chegou a morar no CT.

West Ham eye £34m ace who's open to moving as Potter plots transfer surge

West Ham United are in transition under Graham Potter and the summer window will arrive with much anticipation surrounding the type of signings the Englishman could bring to the London Stadium.

West Ham's lack of firepower on show again at Everton

Stability has been the watchword for Graham Potter since his arrival in East London, but his side have continued to deliver a series of inconsistent results over the last few months.

Learning plenty about the options at his disposal, suspicions coming out of the club indicate that the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager will react once the summer comes around. Injury problems and a lack of strength in depth have led to makeshift solutions in forward positions, with Tomas Soucek relied on for goals from midfield in recent weeks, bagging in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Saturday.

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek

Undoubtedly then, the frontline has became a pressing priority amid Michail Antonio’s unfortunate circumstances. Making himself clear, Potter wants to sign Lille forward Jonathan David as part of his transfer surge once the window opens for business.

A lack of firepower has indeed been the story of his side’s flat-footed season – Jarrod Bowen has been his usual productive self in front of goal, though not even he has reached double figures this campaign.

Niclas Fullkrug has been another to succumb to fitness issues, so it won’t come as a surprise to hear that Fenerbache’s Youssef En-Nesyri is also on the Hammers’ radar, given his similar stature.

West Ham will stave off any threat of relegation, but they will still feel frustrated at their lack of tangible progress. Seeking ways to improve their Premier League predicament, Potter is now lining up a swoop for a striker with a proven track record that may be available this summer.

West Ham United want Tammy Abraham to head up transfer surge

According to Football Insider, West Ham have entered the frame to sign AC Milan loanee Tammy Abraham and there is scope for a relatively cheap deal to occur amid Roma deeming him surplus to requirements at the Stadio Olimpico.

Said to find the prospect of a move to the London Stadium ‘hugely appealing’ because of the chance to work with Potter, the former Chelsea man has scored 26 times in 89 English top-flight appearances. The 27-year-old is also wanted by Everton and Leeds United.

Cost £18m, now worth 1150% more: West Ham have struck gold on the new Noble

Far from the only position Potter has earmarked for improvement, the Hammers want a full-back, central defender and midfielder to plug the gaps across their squad. Signing on for a £34 million fee at Roma in 2021, Abraham has been a peripheral figure on loan at AC Milan this campaign and isn’t likely to be a permanent fixture at San Siro or his parent club moving forward.

Spying an opportunity, Potter may feel West Ham could be the perfect environment for the Three Lions international to get his career back on track should a deal be thrashed out this summer.

Rishi Patel hundred steers Leicestershire to safety against Glamorgan

Opener scores second hundred of season as teams shake hands on draw

Rishi Patel celebrates reaching his hundred•Getty Images

An impressive, unbeaten first century on his home ground from Leicestershire’s Rishi Patel brought pleasant compensation to spectators who witnessed their side’s LV=Insurance County Championship match with Glamorgan fizzle out as a draw on the final day.Patel, 24, whose potential has excited the coaching staff at Grace Road since his move from Essex in 2020, seems now to be realising it. This was his second hundred in three matches after breaking his duck by driving his team to an epic victory over Yorkshire at Headingley three weeks ago.He played superbly, rarely making an error let alone offering a chance, hitting 18 fours and three sixes in his career-best 134 not out before Leicestershire declared their second innings on 252 for 3, most of them coming cleanly off the bat as he picked off boundaries all round the wicket. His captain, Lewis Hill, was unlucky not to join him on three figures, dragging one on to his stumps for 82 having never looked in any trouble, the two sharing a 203-run partnership for the second wicket.Earlier, Glamorgan had extended their overnight lead from 39 to 58 in losing their last two first-innings wickets as they were all out for 465, Chris Cooke the final man to depart after hitting 132. Veteran Leicestershire seamer Chris Wright finished with 5 for 89.Bottom of the table last season, Leicestershire are beginning to look like a team with promotion potential this year, having topped 400 first-innings runs in all three Championship matches played so far and compiling seven partnerships of 100 runs or more in those games, compared with nine in total in the 2022 campaign.Cooke’s century for the visitors followed his unbeaten 191 in the corresponding fixture last season, when his contribution was somewhat overshadowed by Sam Northeast’s epic 410 not out in Glamorgan’s record 795 for 5 declared. It was a match that was arguably the nadir of a desperate Leicestershire season as they lost by an innings despite themselves making 584 in their first innings. This time, in the lead rather than supporting role, Cooke lost his middle stump making room to swing hard as Wright completed a five-wicket haul for the first time since September 2021.Two overs earlier, Andrew Salter had departed in unfortunate and uncomfortable circumstances, a ball from Wright jagging back to strike him somewhere around his protective box and rolling on to the stumps as he dropped to his haunches.Having been 155 for 5, Glamorgan will have felt well satisfied that their second five wickets had put on double that runs tally. Doing so had taken so long, however, on top of overs lost earlier to the weather, that there was little prospect of fashioning a positive result.Glamorgan’s only hope was that they could bowl Leicestershire out in around 50 of the 87 overs still to play and give themselves a modest target in such time that remained. Michael Neser gave them an encouraging start, having opener Sol Budinger out for a single when he prodded at one outside off stump and gave David Lloyd the simplest of catches at first slip.Yet such optimism as that wicket might have stirred was tempered in the next over as Patel pounced on a leg-side delivery from Timm van der Gugten with such timing and vigour that the ball sailed out of the ground and into Milligan Road, coming to rest under a parked van. He followed up with a crisp drive through cover for four.It was an indication of what was to come as Patel picked up boundaries all round the ground. He hammered 18 in one over off Salter soon after lunch, back-to-back swept fours taking him to 51 from 74 balls with nine fours and a six, which he celebrated with another six down the ground off the offspinner, followed by a clip for four through midwicket.Salter recovered well and with Neser taking over from van der Gugten at the Bennett End the flow of runs was temporarily stemmed. But Patel got going again when Marnus Labuschagne replaced Salter, reverse sweeping the Australian to the fence to go to 98 before driving Jamie McIlroy’s medium pace through mid-off to complete a hundred off 137 balls, containing 17 fours and two sixties.Hill went past fifty off 91 balls soon afterwards as Leicestershire’s lead topped 100 with very little doing for any of the bowlers under high cloud. The Leicestershire skipper must have had an eye on his second century of the season but missed out, falling just before tea on 82 as his counterpart Lloyd picked up a first wicket in the second innings, to which he added a second when Colin Ackermann holed out to deep midwicket soon after tea, before the teams shook hands on the inevitable draw at 4.50pm.

Pep can finally axe Foden by unleashing Man City's 19-year-old "superstar"

Winless in their last two games in all competitions, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City head into Sunday’s FA Cup quarter final tie with AFC Bournemouth worrying that another poor result could be on the cards.

If the Citizens were to crash out of the esteemed competition at the hands of Andoni Iraola’s Cherries, the season would have to be written off as a definite disaster with no trophy coming City’s way, alongside a Premier League collapse that could still see the damaged outfit finish out of the top four.

Man City

Guardiola will be looking ahead to City’s near future with caution, therefore, knowing that the old guard at his disposal are no longer at their dynamic best, as Phil Foden continues to see his career unfortunately fall by the wayside.

The numbers behind Phil Foden's poor form for club and country

Foden was once viewed as one of English football’s brightest shining gems, with Guardiola just last year labelling the Stockport-born ace as “world-class.”

The Spaniard’s words weren’t hyperbole either as Foden collected a hefty 27 strikes for his side in all competitions last season, culminating in the 24-year-old picking up the PFA Player of the Year accolade.

Six Premier League titles down at the Etihad too, it’s undeniable that Foden is seen as a modern day great to the sky blue half of Manchester, even if his performances this campaign have exposed an attacker that’s low on confidence.

Foden’s weaknesses as an attacker have notably come to the forefront whenever he pulls on England white, with the 24-year-old only boasting four strikes for the senior side from 44 caps, next to his 97 goals lining up in Manchester.

Phil Foden for England

Despite his poor form, he was included in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad and started the game against Albania last Friday, only to attract criticism from the new manager after a game in which he failed to have a shot, make a key pass or complete a dribble.

With no goal contributions in the Premier League since January also holding him back, his once-concrete first-team spot has been regularly filled by Savinho, with an exciting youngster now fancying his chances at breaking into the senior side subsequently.

Man City's new "superstar" could replace Foden

It’s not just Savinho that has benefitted from the 54-year-old taking risks with his team selections, seen in the emergence of 21-year-old gem Abdukodir Khusanov defensively.

Therefore, new signing Claudio Echeverri will fancy his chances at breaking into the first team picture having arrived only a few weeks ago. Tthe 19-year-old cost City £12.5m to obtain back in early 2024 before being loaned straight back to his native Argentina to continue his development.

This looks to have been the right decision on City’s end with Echeverri scoring stunners on a regular basis back at Enzo Francescoli’s side.

In total, the teenage sensation – who has been noted as possessing an “exceptional” first touch by football journalist Juan Carlos Pasman – has notched up a promising four goals and eight assists lining up for Los Millonarios, with his ability to line up as a number ten or as a winger making him an an obvious replacement down the line for a waning Foden.

Echeverri isn’t the finished article by any stretch of the imagination, but City’s blessed track record with buys from Argentina in the past stands the 19-year-old in good stead to become a rip-roaring success in England, with Guardiola working wonders when Sergio Aguero and Julian Alvarez entered the building.

Foden won’t be written off completely, with an assist on international duty with England demonstrating his ability to fashion a chance at a moment’s notice, but the “future superstar” – as he has been labelled by football analyst Ben Mattinson – will surely be utilised by Guardiola when he leaves South America for good.

It does feel as if City are on the brink of a new dawn at the Etihad, with some tweaks here and there perhaps opening up a chance for Echeverri to be a revelation in Manchester.
