Vimos um time apático no primeiro tempo.

Fifties for Ben Charlesworth, Ollie Price and Miles Hammond push lead to 341 on third day

Gloucestershire 343 and 246 for 5 (Charlesworth 64, O. Price 53, Hammond 53) lead Somerset 248 (Imam-ul-Haq 90, Rew 44*, T. Price 5-75) by 341 runsHalf-centuries from Ben Charlesworth, Ollie Price and Miles Hammond left Gloucestershire poised for a challenging declaration on the third day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Somerset at Taunton. The visitors began the day by bowling out their arch-rivals for 248, from an overnight 209 for 8, Tom Price completing figures of 5 for 75.That gave Gloucestershire a first-innings lead of 95, which they cemented by scoring 246 for 5 in their second innings, Charlesworth contributing 64, Price 52 and Hammond 53.A deficit of 341 will mean a testing final day for Somerset’s fragile batting line-up if the thunderstorms that have been forecast throughout the game continue to stay away. After the start of play had been delayed by ten minutes following rain, the hosts added only four to their overnight score before Sajid Khan was caught behind looking to guide a short ball from David Payne over the slips. The Pakistan off-spinner made it clear he did not agree with the decision, repeatedly pointing to his shoulder as the contact point.James Rew, unbeaten on 35 at the start, and Jack Brooks added 35 for the last wicket, the latter top-edging a six off Price before falling for 21 to the next delivery, caught at third slip.Teenager Rew finished unbeaten on 44 after nearly four hours of intense concentration. But Somerset fell two runs short of a second batting point and soon their seamers were again struggling to find any assistance from the Cooper Associates County Ground pitch.Charlesworth and Marcus Harris took the Gloucestershire second-innings score to 35 before Harris was bowled off stump by a good delivery from Josh Davey.By lunch, the score had progressed to 49 for 1 and the visitors led by 144. Soon Charlesworth and Ollie Price were building on it comfortably in the afternoon sunshine.Price went to his second half-century of the match, off 97 balls, with nine fours, before becoming a first Somerset victim for Sajid, caught at slip attempting a reverse sweep.Sajid bowled tightly from the River End until Hammond launched him for a straight six and had figures of 1 for 39 from 17 overs at tea, which was taken with Gloucestershire 143 for 2.The lead was 238 and Charlesworth was four short of fifty. The tall left-hander remained patient at the start of the final session and reached the landmark off 179 balls, with 4 fours.Sajid continued to show excellent control and there was no urgency to Gloucestershire’s batting, with Charlesworth and Hammond content to accumulate steadily. The floodlights were turned on with 18 overs still left in the day’s play. Tom Lammonby supported Sajid with a tight spell of left-arm seam and claimed the wicket of Charlesworth, caught at slip driving with the score on 192.The stand with Hammond had added 68, but occupied 32.2 overs at a time when their team might have pressed for a declaration before the close. With Gloucestershire’s innings becalmed, Somerset opted not to take the second new ball at 196 for 3. Brooks replaced Lammonby, who had conceded just 14 runs from ten overs. The stranglehold was broken as Brooks’ first two overs cost 14. James Bracey survived a stumping chance off Sajid in a bid to further lift the tempo.Hammond moved to a watchful half-century off 137 balls, with 3 fours and 2 sixes, before Bracey fell to a stunning Kasey Aldridge catch off his own bowling, the tall seamer diving to his right to take the ball an inch off the ground. At 218 for 4, Gloucestershire led by 313. Skipper Graeme van Buuren wasted no time extending the advantage with a six over long-on off Sajid.Hammond was caught at slip to give Sajid a second wicket and Somerset could take some comfort from having restricted their neighbours to a run rate of just 2.67 an over.

Chelsea spending sprees, City’s £181m splurge: The biggest Jan windows ever

Clubs across Europe’s top five leagues spent a massive total of £1.1bn on transfers this January, more than doubling the amount spent last year in the same period.

Manchester City were far and away the biggest spenders, splashing out £181m on five new players, including Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, Nico Gonzalez from Porto, Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens, Vitor Reis from Palmeiras and Juma Bah from Real Valladolid.

But how does City’s spree compare to previous record-breaking windows? Here’s an in-depth look at the 9 biggest January window spends of all time, with the help of data from Transfermarkt and news sources.

Following Roman Abramovich’s takeover of the club in 2003, Chelsea often made a habit of spending big in the summer, but took it a little easier in January.

That was until 2011, when they decided to splash £69m – a club record at the time – on two big new signings.

First was the high-profile and controversial arrival of striker Fernando Torres from Liverpool, who Chelsea splashed £50m on. Then, on deadline day, defender David Luiz arrived from Benfica for a reported fee of £21.3m.

Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

All of the money Liverpool spent in the January 2019 transfer window went on one player: Virgil van Dijk.

The fee, which was a world record for a defender at the time, has since proven to be money extremely well spent, with Van Dijk establishing himself as one of, if not the, best defenders in world football, helping Liverpool win everything there is to win, including the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Champions League.

His stellar performances this season have the Reds and new manager Arne Slot on course for another top-flight triumph.

After years of trying to land him, January 2022 finally marked the arrival of Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic at Juventus, with the Old Lady splashing a massive £66m to bring him to Turin from Fiorentina.

While he can’t exactly be considered a flop, he’s not reached the heights many perhaps would have hoped, finding the net 54 times in 129 games – an average return for a player who is netting around a cool £350,000 per week.

Defender Federico Gatti, signed in the same window for just £7.5m, on the other hand, has proven to be far better value for money.

The only non-European club to be included on this list, Chinese side Jiangsu Suning spent around £81m in January 2016 to sign Alex Teixeira from Shakhtar Donetsk, Ramires from Chelsea and a number of other low-profile stars – including former Manchester City striker Jo.

The window was supposed to be the start of a revolution for the club, but it never materialised. Suning went on to have just one successful season, finishing second in the 2016 Chinese Super League and the Chinese FA Cup, before eventually dissolving in 2021.

Shortly after Newcastle United were taken over by a Saudi-led consortium in October 2021, the Magpies went big in the 2022 January transfer market.

The club brought in Chris Wood from Burnley, Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion and Kieran Trippier from Atlético Madrid, but their marquee acquisition was that of Bruno Guimaraes, who completed a £41.6m move to Tyneside from Ligue 1 side Lyon.

The Brazilian has since gone from strength to strength at St James’ Park, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders.

4 Paris Saint-Germain (January 2024) Money spent: £105m

In January 2024, Paris Saint-Germain forked out a massive £105m to reinforce all over the park, signing striker Goncalo Ramos from Benfica, midfielder Gabriel Moscardo from Corinthians and defender Lucas Beraldo from Sao Paolo.

The revamp, however, hasn’t exactly yielded the results that the French giants would have hoped.

Moscardo spent last season on loan with Reims, making just four appearances before returning to PSG, where he has yet to play a game, while Beraldo is a mere squad player.

Ramos, who cost £70m as PSG made his loan move permanent (technically outside of the January window), has managed 22 goals in 56 games. It’s a respectable figure, but no doubt PSG would have been hoping for more given the money they paid for him.

Philippe Coutinho signs for Barcelona

Barcelona spent a huge £152.5m in January 2018. £10.5m of that went on Colombian defender Yerry Mina, who joined from Brazilian side Palmeiras. The remainder was spent on signing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool.

Still the club’s record signing, the midfielder was never able to show the form he displayed at Anfield, being loaned out twice in four years before eventually being sold to Aston Villa in 2022 for the measly fee of £17 million.

Former Arsenal and England star Ian Wright once described the move as the “worst transfer of all time”.

2 Manchester City (January 2025) Money spent: £181.2m

After a quite dreadful (at least by their own lofty standards) start to the 2024/25 season which saw them lose six Premier League games before the new year, Manchester City decided to fix the problem the only way they know how – spending a ton of cash.

Pep Guardiola went big, spending a combined £181.2m on six new players, the most expensive of whom was Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, who City paid Eintracht Frankfurt £63m for.

A 5-1 defeat to Arsenal on the eve of the transfer window closing, however, suggests the spending hasn’t done too much good.

Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea

No club in football history has ever come close to spending as much money in a January transfer window as Chelsea did in 2023. The Blues splashed a quite unbelievable £330.1m on an array of new talent that included the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto.

Their only sale that month was Jorginho to Arsenal, who cost the Gunners just £9m. That was lower than their cheapest incoming, with Joao Felix arriving on loan from Atletico Madrid for a £9.7m fee.

With the £100m-plus Fernandez flattering to deceive, Mudryk banned for failing a drugs test, Madueke seemingly being unable to pass the ball in the final third and Gusto warming the bench, Chelsea fans will probably be wishing they can have their Champions League-winning Italian midfielder back instead.

'It's part of the game' – Harmanpreet defends Deepti running out Dean

England players express disappointment with final act of Lord’s ODI

Valkerie Baynes24-Sep-2022

Harmanpreet Kaur contended that no “crime” had been committed. England were “not fans”. The two opposing views summed up the divide that inevitably follows the dismissal of a batter who is run out while backing up.So when Deepti Sharma held the ball as she started her action with Charlie Dean out of her ground and broke the bails to seal victory for India by 16 runs and a 3-0 ODI series sweep at Lord’s on Saturday, it was met with booing as well as cheers among the crowd of 15,187.Dean had scored a fighting 47 batting at No. 9 and shared a 35-run stand with No. 11 Freya Davies to put England within reach of what had looked like being an unlikely win when the hosts had slumped to 65 for 7 chasing 170.Related

Jhulan Goswami's fairytale Lord's farewell takes unexpected twist

Stats: Jhulan Goswami, the most prolific bowler of women's cricket

Goswami farewelled with victory as last wicket Dean is run-out backing up

“Today whatever we have done I don’t think it was any crime,” Harmanpreet said during her post-match press conference. “It is part of the game and it is an ICC rule and I think we just need to back our player.”I’m actually very happy she was aware of that, and the batter she is taking too long a stride I think. I don’t think she has done something wrong and we just need to back her.”Harmanpreet also suggested her team had been hard done by when Sophie Ecclestone took a catch to dismiss opener Smriti Mandhana in the third match of their T20I series, which England won 2-1, that touched the ground but was deemed to have been controlled beforehand and therefore legal. She also rejected suggestions that the incident detracted from Jhulan Goswami’s final match of an international career spanning two decades.”I don’t think so because, like I said, I don’t think we have done any crime,” Harmanpreet said. “It’s part of the ICC rules, it’s called a run-out and we’ve done that.”I don’t think we need to talk about that because the first nine wickets were also very important and everybody was working so hard. It was a chaseable total but the way our bowlers bowled and the whole team putting in the effort, there were a lot of things to celebrate other than just talking about the last wicket.”Kate Cross, England’s senior seamer who took 4 for 26 to help bowl India out for 169 inside 46 overs, said it was a mode of dismissal she would not use.”Losing any game of cricket is disappointing,” she said. “Ultimately it’s Deepti’s choice how she goes about that, and we’ve lost that game of cricket. What we did say in the dressing room was that we didn’t lose that game of cricket because of that last wicket.”I think it’s a dismissal that’s always going to divide opinion. That’s all that’s ever going to get said about it: some people are going to like it, some people aren’t. Deepti chose to dismiss Charlie Dean that way. I’m more disappointed for Charlie Dean that she couldn’t get a fifty at Lord’s today because she looked set to do that.”If we’re looking at the real positives, then maybe that’s the only way they could have got Deano out today.”After an initial show of anger, throwing her bat to the ground and shaking her head with tears streaming down her face, Dean composed herself and walked over to the Indian team huddle to shake their hands.”That’s professional sport,” Cross said of Dean’s reaction. “Everyone is human before they’re a cricketer, whatever sport they play. The emotion is always what you get first, and it’s how you react to that.”I thought Deano was absolutely brilliant – the way she went over and shook hands immediately. If you’re talking about the spirit of cricket, I thought that was just fantastic from Deano.”Kate Cross knocked over India’s top four•Getty Images

Amy Jones, England’s stand-in captain throughout India’s tour with regular skipper Heather Knight recovering from hip surgery and vice-captain Nat Sciver taking a mental health break, echoed Cross’s disapproval of the dismissal.”Obviously not happy with the result,” Jones told Sky Sports. “We bowled really well and we just needed a bigger partnership in the middle. The last wicket divides opinion, not a fan, but depends on how India feel about it. It is within the rules… Disappointing but hopefully doesn’t take shine off a what was a good summer and a good series in the end.”In March, the MCC changed the wording that covers a player being run out by the bowler while backing up – often referred to as Mankading – moving it from Law 41 (Unfair play) to Law 38 (Run out). The change, due to come into force next month, attempts to remove some of the stigma around such dismissals.Cross added: “It’s going to divide opinion and it’s going to get talked about. There are a lot of things that are going to get talked about as well – Jhulan’s last game is a massive thing in Indian cricket, and for her to retire at Lord’s is a very special occasion for her and the Indian team. Them winning the series 3-0… there’s a lot to talk about and a lot to dissect.”From our point of view, we were 2-0 down going into this, we’d lost the series already. We were out there to win [ICC women’s] championship points and we didn’t lose that game by losing that 10th wicket there… The game was lost because we weren’t able to keep them to 150 and then we weren’t able to build those partnerships earlier on and back for a little bit longer.”Cross could have had her own piece of history at Lord’s, hosting its first women’s international since England defeated India in the 2017 World Cup final. She bowled brilliantly to remove India’s top four and then returned to the attack towards the end of their innings, only to fall one wicket shy of her third international five-for.”I don’t think I’m ever going to get a better chance to get my name on the honours board than having a four-for bowling at No. 11,” Cross said. “But what frustrated me most about not being able to get the five-for was that it felt like an opportunity that we don’t get often.”It feels like probably a wider picture, but it feels like in women’s cricket, when you get these opportunities you have to take them because you don’t know when the next game is going to be at the home of cricket.”Hopefully that’s what’s going to start changing. We’ve seen that with the way that the Ashes fixtures have come out and we’re playing at some really high-profile grounds. But it definitely felt like when I was on the four-for I was probably thinking about it a little bit too much.”But you know what? The girls were unbelievable. All of them came up to me and said I’ve never wanted someone to get a five-for more which was really sweet. But yeah, not to be.”

Three out of the four matches were drawn after the first two days, October 24 and 25, were rained off, with only Barishal Division beating Dhaka Metropolis by four wickets in mostly dry Rajshahi. The lowest number of overs was played in the drawn game between Dhaka Division and Chattogram Division at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra. The matches between Sylhet Division and Rangpur Division and Rajshahi Division and Khulna Division, both played in the Sylhet International Stadium premises, were drawn too.Best batters
The 18-year old Rangpur opener Abdullah Al Mamun struck his maiden double-century, which was also his first century in first-class cricket, against Sylhet. He was unbeaten on 210 with 16 fours and 13 sixes. He batted for more than nine hours, to help his side get a 400-plus score in the shortened game. When Sylhet replied, Towfiq Khan blasted 92 off 62 balls with eight sixes and as many fours.Khulna’s Amit Majumder and Dhaka Metro’s Marshall Ayub struck the other two hundreds in this round. Amit made 101 off 196 balls with nine fours and a six, while Marshall struck ten fours in his century against Barishal.Best bowlers
The fast bowlers were quite successful during this round. Left-arm quick Abu Hider took his fifth five-wicket haul but it was in Dhaka Metro’s losing cause against Barishal. Abu Jayed had figures of 4-71 against Rangpur, while Kamrul Islam Rabbi took seven wickets in Barishal’s win over Dhaka Metro. Barishal were also aided by left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam’s 5-35.Best match
In the only match where play was possible for at least three days, Dhaka Metro were bowled out for 255. Marshall’s century propped them up but he got little support at the other end. Hider’s five-wicket haul ensured Dhaka Metro led by 90 runs after Barishal were bowled out for 165.But Dhaka Metro squandered their advantage when they were bowled out for 124 in the second innings, with Tanvir taking the five-for and Rabbi taking four more wickets.Rafsan Al Mahmud’s 71 set up the fourth innings chase before Salman Hossain and Kamrul got them home with the unbroken 17-run seventh-wicket stand.Points to ponder
Sylhet are well settled at the top of the Tier-1 points table, while Chattogram are languishing at the bottom with just two points. In Tier-2, Barishal are strong favourites now for promotion to Tier-1, while Khulna remain at the bottom.Players to watch
Many of the top first-class cricketers were out due to the BCB XI’s tour of Tamil Nadu, India, so it was left to stalwarts Marshall and Kamrul to pick up the slack. They did so manfully, while the rest of the players had to wait in the dressing rooms to see off the cyclonic weather.
