Aussies abroad: Warner and Hazlewood continue to shine while David's form adds to mystery

On the county scene, Peter Handscomb, Daniel Worrall and Michael Neser helped their teams to victory while Georgia Redmayne churned out runs in Dubai

Bishop: Mumbai have to own up to mistake of dropping David

IPLDavid Warner insisted he did not need any extra motivation against his former franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, but he still made a big statement against the side that dropped him last season when he plundered 92 off 58 balls to set up a Delhi Capitals victory. Warner was going nicely against Chennai Super Kings as well before missing a reverse sweep against Maheesh Theekshana in what became a heavy Capitals defeat to dent their hopes of progression. However, with at least three innings remaining, Warner has a chance to become the first overseas batter to reach 6000 runs in the tournament.Related

Is Tim David ready to take the baton from Kieron Pollard for Mumbai Indians?

Dan Worrall, Gus Atkinson lead Surrey's seam battering of Northants

Barring a miracle it has come too late to save Mumbai Indians’ season, but Tim David has been making up for lost time after mysteriously sitting on the bench. Following his handy cameo against Rajasthan Royals last week he went further with a match-defining 44 off 21 balls against Gujarat Titans. He sensibly played out Rashid Khan before plundering the final overs from Lockie Ferguson and Mohammed Shami. It brought praise from ESPNcricinfo analyst Daniel Vettori. “There’s a lot going on to be impressed with,” he said. “You just don’t see such clean hitting with such pure shot-making at the back end of an IPL innings.”Mumbai’s victory in that game was sealed by Daniel Sams’ nerveless final over when he managed to defend just eight runs, made more impressive by the fact it came against the finishing power of Rahul Tewatia, David Miller and Rashid. It was a show of strength from Sams who was taken for 35 off an over by Pat Cummins earlier in the competition.Marcus Stoinis turned on the power•BCCI

Josh Hazlewood continued to excel as he helped Royal Challengers Bangalore to back-to-back victories to create some daylight between fourth spot and the chasing pack. In a combined eight overs against Super Kings and Sunrisers he conceded just 36 runs. For a pace bowler who has delivered a minimum of 20 overs in this year’s edition, Hazlewood has comfortably the best economy rate and the third-best of any bowler. In the match against Sunrisers, Glenn Maxwell also produced a handy display with 33 off 24 balls followed by a wicket in the first over the chase. That came after a crucial return of 2 for 22 against Super Kings.Marcus Stoinis gave a display of his power against Kolkata Knight Riders when he took Shivam Mavi for three consecutive sixes at the start of the 19th over. Just when thoughts were turning to what could be, Stoinis picked out deep midwicket but the pain continued for Mavi when his last two balls also went for six against Jason Holder. Stoinis’ 28 off 14 balls became his 10th innings of 20-plus at a strike-rate of 200 or more, with seven of them coming in just over the last 12 months in a sign of his batting development in his various middle-order roles.Dan Worrall celebrates another breakthrough•Getty Images

CountyPeter Handscomb, who will be part of the Australia A squad in Sri Lanka next month, played an important hand in Middlesex’s outstanding chase against Sussex as they hunted down 370 with time to spare. He made 79 out of a second-wicket stand of 209 with Sam Robson who dominated with 149. After the match, Handscomb endorsed Australian-born Robson, who has previously played seven Tests, as worth another look by the England selectors.Daniel Worrall has swapped Australian domestic cricket for the county scene as a local player with a British passport and after a wicketless start for his new team Surrey had an important part to play in a convincing victory over Northamptonshire. Across the two innings, he claimed five wickets including the scalp of New Zealand batter Will Young. It had not been an easy start for Nathan McAndrew at Warwickshire with 0 for 100 in his first outing against Somerset, but he got off the mark with a hard-working haul of 4 for 85 against Lancashire. It prevented the home side from building a more substantial lead which may have left Warwickshire under more pressure as they batted out the final day amid some scares against Matt Parkinson.Michael Neser’s three second-innings wickets were an important part of Glamorgan’s victory against Leicestershire. Neser was left out of the Australia A squad for Sri Lanka with national selector George Bailey saying he saw more value in him continuing to bowl in English conditions with a view to the 2023 Ashes tour. After four games Neser is Glamorgan’s leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets at 25.50.Georgia Redmayne has found form in Dubai•FairBreak Global

FairbreakThis new T20 competition – an innovative creation bringing together some of the leading players from women’s game with those from the Associate nations – got underway in Dubai. While most Australians have stayed at home to rest there are a few taking part. Georgia Redmayne, who was a travelling reserve at the recent World Cup, has shown some terrific form for Warriors including an unbeaten 80 in the opening match. Nicola Carey struck 70 off 43 balls for Spirit as they recovered from 15 for 3 to comfortably beat Sapphires who have Elyse Villani, Grace Harris and New South Wales legspinner Jade Allen in their team. Villani struck an unbeaten 62 in his previous outing against Warriors.Did you see?It will have been a frustration to Marnus Labuschagne that he had a quiet week with the bat – falling for 17 and 13 against Leicestershire – but he made a mark with the ball on the opening day of the game. His 3 for 65 played a key part in restricting Leicestershire’s first innings. He broke an opening stand of 90 then, with the visitors solidly placed at 199 for 3, put himself on a hat-trick by sliding quicker deliveries through Wiaan Mulder and Scott Steel. The hat-trick delivery finished with Labuschagne’s hands on his head as the inside edge squirted safely into the leg side. Performance of the weekIt goes to Tim David. It could easily have been David Warner, but his T20 credentials are secure. David is still forging his path and it would have been easy for him to become frustrated and confused by warming the bench for a struggling franchise. However, offered the opportunity in recent matches he has taken it with both hands. It will take something remarkable for Mumbai to progress this season but they need to look to the future and David, surely, is a big part of that. And then there’s Australia.

He’s like De Bruyne: Rangers could finally bin Dowell by signing £3.3m star

The January transfer window is now officially open for business and that means that Glasgow Rangers can make moves to improve their squad in the coming weeks.

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen could look to bring players in to bolster the squad, with the Gers currently 14 points adrift in the Scottish Premiership but still having the Europa League and the SFA Cup to play for.

Oscar Cortes, Mohamed Diomande, and Fabio Silva were all brought in to Ibrox in the January transfer window in 2024, which shows that the Gers chiefs are prepared to be busy in the winter market.

However, Rangers could need to move on some players to create space in the squad for new additions, and Kieran Dowell is one dud who should be moved on.

Why Kieran Dowell should be moved on

Signed on a free transfer from Norwich City in the summer of 2023, the English attacking midfielder has failed to make his mark at Ibrox over the past 18 months.

The former Everton academy graduate only made 12 appearances, starting five of those games, in the Premiership last season, and contributed with two goals and two assists.

Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell.

Dowell’s campaign was heavily disrupted by injuries because he missed a whopping 26 matches with two separate issues, that both kept him out for over 50 days.

So far this term, the 27-year-old dud has produced zero goals and zero assists in 11 Premiership outings, which illustrates how little the midfielder has contributed for Clement.

Therefore, the Belgian boss should bin the midfield flop, who has scored two league goals in 18 months at Ibrox, and use the January window to sign a replacement for him, with reported target Darius Olaru a potentially fantastic option.

Why Rangers should sign Darius Olaru

Rangers are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the Romania international, who has a £3.3m release clause in his contract with FCSB, and signing him would allow them to ditch Dowell from the squad in that position.

Olaru is an attacking midfielder whose form in the Romanian top-flight since the start of last season suggests that he would come in as a big upgrade on the Englishman, if he can translate those performances over to Scottish football.

The 26-year-old star, who was compared to Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne for his quality as a scorer and a creator of goals by FCSB chief Mihai Stoica, has only missed six games through injury since the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Olaru has provided regular contributions of goals, assists, and ‘big chances’ created in the league since the start of last season, something that Dowell has been unable to do in his time at Ibrox.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for the De Bruyne-esque star to come in and offer Clement more quality at the top end of the pitch than he has been getting from the former Norwich man, who should be ditched from the squad and replaced by the £3.3m-rated star.

Olaru has the availability, as shown by his impressive fitness record, and the ability, as evidenced by his form in Romania, to be a far more valuable asset to the club than Dowell.

Liverpool plotting to sign their best CM since Thiago in £314k-p/w talent

Liverpool were quite clearly tired against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, and you could maybe say the same for their Premier League draw against Manchester United last weekend.

Arne Slot’s side have been fantastic this year, mounting a title challenge that has seen them outplay their rivals to take a six-point lead (with a game in hand) at the campaign’s midpoint.

Liverpool managerArneSlot

Sometimes in football, things don’t go to plan. Liverpool’s 24-match unbeaten run was snapped at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in controversial circumstances, but the plain truth is that the Reds were toothless in attack and wobbly at the back.

Perhaps a good way to counter these problems and restore the feel-good factor would be to work somewhere in the middle and strengthen Liverpool’s midfield this month.

An opportunity for a new number six might have emerged. Ryan Gravenberch has been sensational this year though has started all 15 matches across the Premier League and Europe, and needs support.

Liverpool eyeing another midfielder

As per German reporter Christian Falk, Liverpool are interested in signing Joshua Kimmich this year, with the Bayern Munich star out of contract at the end of the season.

The 29-year-old midfielder is engaged in discussions with his employers to extend his £314k-per-week deal, but Liverpool are now in a position to canvass their proposal and could tempt him to try his hand outside his homeland for the first time.

If FSG are serious about their interest, it might be wise for them to act prudently and bring him in this winter, for Manchester City are also sniffing around and keen on landing him this month for a bargain £10m fee.

What Joshua Kimmich would bring to Liverpool

Typically, Liverpool like to sign players before their prime, identifying exciting talents and shaping them into elite-level superstars. Typically. FSG do make exceptions, Thiago Alcantara being the most salient.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara

In 2020, Thiago joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich (what d’ya know) in an eye-catching £25m deal. The Premier League champions saw an opportunity and grabbed it, the Spaniard being one of the eminent midfielders of his generation.

It wasn’t a skillset that Liverpool were used to under Jurgen Klopp’s tutelage, but Thiago was arguably the most technically talented midfielder in Europe and added something different to the team.

Indeed, the Reds were treated to some incredible football with Thiago at the centre, but unfortunately, injuries limited him to partial success, less so than his thrilling years with Bayern and Barcelona, winning Champions League titles with each and many lifting many league trophies too.

Back to Kimmich. FSG might be wary about repeating the move with a player of a similar age from the same stadium, but the German’s fitness record is far better than his one-time teammate’s. Moreover, he could replicate the ball-playing quality in a Slot system that is better tailored to it.

The now-retired Thiago only started 51 Premier League matches across his four-year stay at Liverpool, averaging out at around 13 per term. The fact that he left such an indelible impression on the Anfield fanbase despite his fitness struggles suggests that Kimmich could have an incredible effect.

TalkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino has actually hailed Thiago as “maybe the most gifted player I’ve seen in the Premier League.” Liverpool are grateful for the time they spent with the distinguished Spaniard, but it could have been so much more.

Certainly, there are tactical similarities between the players. Comparing Kimmich’s statistics from this term against Thiago’s in 2021/22, when he received the aforementioned praise from Cascarino and was at his ostensible Liverpool peak, you can see that his quality is indeed recognisable through elements of Kimmich’s skill set.

It’s food for thought. Slot would relish the opportunity to enhance his team with a different variety of “world-class” deep-sitting midfielder – as hailed by Julian Nagelsmann – one who differs from Gravenberch, to be sure.

Looking at the two players, you can see that both bring the gold standard when it comes to pulling strings with their influence, threading an obscene number of progressive passes each match while showcasing athleticism through their ball recoveries.

Furthermore, Kimmich may not be as active a defensive force in the Bayern first team but he’s still more than reliable in that regard, having won 66% of his ground duels in the Bundesliga this season, as per Sofascore.

Given that Thiago is regarded as, perhaps, the most technically gifted player to have graced the Premier League, and that Kimmich is able to go punch-for-punch with him across similar metrics, there’s a solid case to be made that Liverpool would get their mitts on their best midfielder since the Spain star, should Kimmich be brought in.

Slot’s long-term project could prosper with him in the mix, jockeying with Gravenberch for that number six spot, but it could also be that FSG launch a £10m move this month to give Liverpool that added something in the centre. It might make all the difference.

Liverpool may look to strengthen their frontline this year, but perhaps not on the right flank.

Labuschagne, Smith centuries put Australia in the driver's seat

Sri Lanka have stayed in the game, but with batting likely to get tougher in the next few days, they might have conceded the advantage already

Andrew McGlashan08-Jul-2022Stumps Significant centuries, but for different reasons, from Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith gave Australia control on the opening day of the second Test in Galle. Labuschagne made his first Test hundred overseas and Smith just his second in 32 innings overall, going back to 2019, to form the centrepieces of a measured display by their team.On a surface that started much truer than the one used for the opening Test – but still offered help for the spinners with more likely later on – life was easier for the batters. But the first innings remains the time to score the runs. Labuschagne and Smith added 134 in 37 overs, dominating the second session, before Sri Lanka fought back somewhat through debutant left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, one of three new caps handed out by the home side.Labuschagne made Sri Lanka pay for giving him a life on 28, when Niroshan Dickwella fluffed a stumping chance which would have left Australia three down before lunch. Instead, he went on to reach his seventh Test century from 147 balls, the second fifty taking 63 deliveries, before he was lured out of his crease by Jayasuriya on the stroke of tea – this time Dickwella completed the dismissal, 76 runs later.Except for his reprieve, it was a beautifully compiled hundred from Labuschagne. After a quiet resumption following lunch, where six overs brought just ten runs including the first maiden by a Sri Lanka spinner in the series, from Ramesh Mendis, Labuschagne got himself going again with a strong pull off Kasun Rajitha, which brought up his fifty from 84 balls.Marnus Labuschagne scored his first Test century away from home•AFP

Then, in the next over from Ramesh, he collected consecutive boundaries. He had a moment of fortune when a bottom-edged sweep against Jayasuriya went mighty close to off stump, but he followed it with a perfectly timed punchy drive. Good footwork, as he came down the pitch to Jayasuriya to reach the ball on the full, brought him his 12th boundary to get to 99.Until now, his 11 overseas Tests had brought five half-centuries – four of them in a row during his memorable performance during the 2019 Ashes in England – so ticking it off was an important milestone, especially to do so in Asia with the tour of India next year.Smith’s century, his 28th in Tests, was just his second since the end of his remarkable 2019 Ashes and his first for 16 innings. It came late in the day against the second new ball, when he sent Rajitha through the off side with a commanding cover drive. There was a big smile, and perhaps a hint of relief in the celebration. He had attracted criticism for his angry reaction to being run out in the opening Test and on occasions over the last couple of years has not appeared settled at the crease. But here Smith was in control throughout with his crisp footwork. A brace of full tosses from Ramesh helped him towards his fifty, but some of his best strokes came when he put Jayasuriya through the leg side – playing against the turn, but with strong wrists and superb placement.Sri Lanka did well to stay in touch either side of tea as they managed to bring some control to Australia’s scoring rate after breaking the third-wicket stand. They had started the day nicely when Rajitha, one of four changes to the Sri Lanka side, produced a testing six-over opening spell and found a bit of assistance with the new ball. In a fashion that has become familiar over the last few years, he removed David Warner from around the wicket when a good-length delivery nipped away sharply and clattered the stumps.Steven Smith scored his first Test century since January 2021•AFP

Usman Khawaja had been very secure, picking up from where he left off in the first match, making an early statement when he crunched Ramesh through mid-on, before receiving a brute of a delivery that spun to beat his edge and take the top of off stump. It would be more than two hours before Sri Lanka struck again, with Jayasuriya showing impressive character on debut after a difficult start, which had seen him concede nine boundaries in 12 overs before taking Labuschagne’s wicket. He was able to add to his tally Travis Head, whose struggles on the road continued when a delivery slipped past the edge to clip off stump. Then he claimed Cameron Green with a borderline lbw, the batter missing a sweep. Green had been given a life when Dickwella missed another stumping.Jayasuriya’s day could be split into two parts: 12-0-54-0 and 16-2-36-3.Smith, though, remained solid through to the close with Alex Carey for company. Australia had resisted changing the balance of their side by recalling Glenn Maxwell at No. 8. Whether he would have added more value than Mitchell Starc will become clear in the next couple of days, but Australia are well placed to push for 2-0.Sri Lanka, meanwhile, introduced three debutants – Kamindu Mendis, Maheesh Theekshana and Jayasuriya – following the Covid-19 outbreak in the squad.
