Sophie Devine: 'It must be something in the Kerr family, nerves of steel'

Amelia Kerr won the match for New Zealand but sister Jess started it in fine style as well

Andrew McGlashan30-Sep-2020One Kerr sister started the final T20I in Brisbane in style and another was there to finish it. Amelia Kerr will rightly take the headlines for her matchwinning all-round display of 2 for 18 and a nerveless 18 off 10 balls when New Zealand looking like messing up the chase, but Jess Kerr did what many cannot manage: bowl a maiden over to Alyssa Healy in the powerplay to open the match.Medium-pacer Jess, who had not played the first two matches, did not end up with a wicket next to her name – she didn’t even complete her four overs – but the string of dot balls she sent down to Healy was key in one of her less fluent innings as she departed for 8 off 14 balls, falling shortly after the end of the fielding restrictions in a period where New Zealand took a grip on the innings.”It must be something in the Kerr family, nerves of steel,” the visiting team’s captain, Sophie Devine, said. “It was great for her – that’s what you want from any player that comes into the team is to make an impact and she did it straightaway against one of the world’s best batters.”Huge credit to her. We thought she was a great match-up against both their [opening] batters, and to start a T20 match with a maiden is pretty incredible. It’s credit to her and Jacob Oram, the bowling coach, in terms of honing those skills and when she does come into games she can have a great impact for us.”ALSO READ: Jacob Oram interview – ‘Spin bowling one of the strongest skills in the women’s game’Then it was over to Amelia. As is so often the case for legspinners, it was a pair of her worst deliveries that earned her the wickets: a drag down that Rachael Haynes pulled to midwicket and a big full toss clubbed to mid-on by Meg Lanning. Her four overs included 10 dots and just one four. However, for a period in New Zealand’s chase when Katey Martin and Amy Satterthwaite fell in quick succession it looked like her work with the ball would go to waste. The equation blew out from less than a run-a-ball required to 25 off 18 deliveries, memories of the poor chase in the opening game still fresh in the mind.Amelia Kerr connects with the winning shot•Getty Images

This time, though, New Zealand held their nerve thanks to Amelia and some help from Hayley Jensen who struck a vital boundary off the last ball of the 18th over. Kerr then drove Sophie Molineux for a boundary before consecutive fours in the final over against Megan Schutt. There will likely come a time when she bats higher in the order, but despite being around international cricket for four years is still only 19.”We all know how much talent Amelia has got; for us it’s about nurturing her,” Devine said. “She has a pretty calm head on her shoulders as we saw today and she’s done it before, not only for New Zealand but also in the WBBL. The world is her oyster; I know she wants to bat up the order in time but the great thing is she’s only 19 or something ridiculous, so she’s got all the time in the world to figure out where she wants to be.”There were nerves; not sure there was panic as such,” Devine added about the closing stages. “We got ourselves into a really good position and from 10, 11 overs out we had the run rate under control. We saw in the first game, we probably blinked first so for us it was about keeping calm and taking it deep. We knew we had the batters and could get over the line.”A talking point from Australia’s point of view was Lanning’s decision to pull Georgia Wareham out of the attack after she had claimed the wicket of Martin and then not to use her final over on a worn surface. Instead she returned to the pace of Schutt with the New Zealand batters able to use her extra pace.”I’d brought her [Georgia] on to get the wicket and the run rate got up to about eight and a half and I felt that was a good opportunity to bring Schutter, JJ [Jess Jonassen] and Soph [Molineux] back in to really try and close the game down which they have done really well for us over a long period of time,” Lanning explained. “That was the thinking, getting that wicket then trying to squeeze as much as we could.”The teams will now prepare for the ODI series, where the Rose Bowl will be contested. It begins on Saturday. Australia have held the trophy since 1999.

27-year-old now set to join new club after quitting Tottenham

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has been forthright in admitting the squad needs an overhaul this summer, with a 27-year-old now swapping N17 for Europe.

Players who could leave Spurs with Joe Rodon

Wales international Joe Rodon has become the latest player to depart Spurs, coming four years after Jose Mourinho signed him from Swansea City for around £11 million.

Postecoglou is looking to sign another starlet after the Yorkshire sensation.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 2, 2024

The 26-year-old was out of favour in north London for quite some time, despite arriving with plenty of potential, and spent the last two seasons on various loan spells at Rennes and Leeds United.

Rodon managed to impress for the latter club, making 46 appearances in the Championship last season under Daniel Farke and playing a crucial role as they narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds were heavily linked with re-signing the centre-back on a permanent deal, which has now become reality, with Rodon making the move back to Elland Road for around £10 million and English sensation Archie Gray going the opposite direction to Spurs.

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy will be happy with the business conducted, as the club make most of the money they paid for Rodon back off his sale, whilst also sealing a deal for one of the country's most exciting talents.

Rodon now officially joins Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic and Tanguy Ndombele in leaving north London for pastures new. The aforementioned crop could also be joined by Bryan Gil, Djed Spence, Giovani Lo Celso, Troy Parrott, Richarlison, Sergio Reguilon, Yves Bissouma, Manor Solomon, Emerson Royal and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – who have all been named as players who could be sold by Tottenham this summer.

Postecoglou suggested that a number of his squad could leave Spurs, while reliable insider Paul O'Keefe has recently claimed that Levy is open to offers for over a dozen Tottenham stars.

Genoa have been in recent talks to sign Spence on a permanent deal, but things have gone quiet on that front. AC Milan remain locked in negotiations over Royal as well, so we could see more exits in the coming weeks.

Perhaps the most crucial departure was that of Ndombele, who endured a nightmare stint at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after previously signing for a club-record £55 million deal from Lyon. The Frenchman earned a reported £200,000-per-week at the club, so Levy will be glad to vanquish his high salary off the books.

Tanguy Ndombele agrees to join Nice after leaving Tottenham

Ndombele was sent out on various loan spells during the latter stages of his Spurs career, having put pen to paper on a temporary spell back at Lyon, Napoli the season afterwards and Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasaray last campaign.

Former Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele

The 27-year-old was also criticised for being out of shape over 2023/2024, with the Turkish press claiming Ndombele was 6 kilograms overweight last season.

Now, after leaving Tottenham, Foot Mercato state that he is in much better shape fitness-wise and determined to reignite his career. They add that Ndombele has agreed to join OGC Nice after quitting Spurs, having chosen the Ligue 1 side despite receiving "several exotic offers".

It will be interesting to see if the midfielder can truly make something of his obvious ability, with England star Declan Rice even once calling Ndombele one of the toughest opponents he's ever faced.

Sussex appoint James Kirtley, Ian Salisbury as Jason Gillespie replacements

Sussex become third county to have employed a specialist T20 coach

James Kirtley and Ian Salisbury will split head-coaching responsibilities at Sussex•Sussex County Cricket Club

Sussex will promote from within to fill their vacant head coach position after Jason Gillespie’s departure from the club, with current assistant coaches Ian Salisbury and James Kirtley splitting the role across formats.Sussex will become the third county after Derbyshire and Middlesex to have employed a specialist T20 coach, with Kirtley, a Twenty20 Cup winner with the club in 2009, taking on the job for the Vitality Blast. Salisbury, who played 15 Tests for England as a legspinner, will be in charge for the County Championship and the One-Day Cup.Sussex are a club in transition, having lost several senior players over the last few months. Laurie Evans and Danny Briggs have moved to Surrey and Warwickshire respectively, while David Wiese is unlikely to return – unless as an overseas player in the Blast – after the expiration of his Kolpak registration. Luke Wells, the opening batsman, is in discussions with other counties after the end of his deal, while Harry Finch and Will Sheffield were both released. It is understood that Sussex made contacts with some external candidates for the job, including Warwickshire’s sport director Paul Farbrace, but they instead decided to back their own men. The club announced “a limited number” of redundancies last month and a reduction in playing budget amid a £3 million loss of income.”As we head into the winter with so much uncertainty, we wanted to give clarity to everyone involved with the club,” Rob Andrew, Sussex’s chief executive, said. “Ian and James have worked well together both here and elsewhere, are passionate about the club and have a clear vision for all formats.”The county game will evolve further next year with the launch of the Hundred, and this is a move taken with that in mind. We have developed a strong T20 team and now have several players who focus on white-ball cricket only. We believe that is a trend that will continue to grow in the future and we need to be able to cater for this.”The Royal London Cup will be played during the Hundred, when we will have players missing. This will enable us to continue to develop our young players during the 50-over competition. Our four-day form has been disappointing for a few years and we have a clear strategy to build a successful team over the coming years, primarily with home-grown players and high-quality overseas where appropriate.”ALSO READ: Gillespie not turning his back on county cricket as he heads homeSalisbury said that he was “immensely proud, honoured and humbled” to have been awarded his role. “The chance to work in unison with James is one I’m hugely excited about,” he said. “Our shared vision and strategy is to bring sustained success to Sussex. We have the talent within the squad and the potential talent coming through from the most impressive academy in the country to achieve this.”Kirtley said: “I am thrilled to have been given this opportunity with the T20 team and very grateful to the club for entrusting me with this role. I am very much looking forward to working with Luke Wright [T20 captain] and the rest of the squad in delivering silverware to this club.”It will be exciting to help find the next level with the T20 side and with the help of the coaching staff, senior players and analysts I am confident we will be successful in discovering the small margins and making the changes necessary to take us further in the competition.”Keith Greenfield, Sussex’s performance director, said that he expected to see more counties using different coaches for different formats going forward. “This is a great opportunity with us,” he said, “with split coaching roles a proactive new course for the club and one that you will see others follow in the future.”

Man Utd discussed move for striker who Alan Shearer says batters defenders

With attacking reinforcements clearly a high priority for Manchester United this summer, it appears that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dan Ashworth are currently discussing new attacking options for the Red Devils.

Zirkzee just the start of United's attacking rebuild

The big news out of Old Trafford this week has been the seemingly imminent arrival of Bologna talisman Joshua Zirkzee. Erik ten Hag's men have long been the favourites to land the Netherlands striker with a recent update from Fabrizio Romano suggesting that all personal terms have now been agreed and Zirkzee has informed his current side of his intention to move to Manchester.

£120,000-per-week player set to leave Tottenham as Man United chase him

Erik ten Hag is among his summer suitors.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 4, 2024

United's quest for attacking talent does not stop with Zirkzee however as the club are currently linked with deals for a number of highly-rated forward players.

Jaden Philogene has been a surprise name that has done the rounds in recent days, but the Red Devils look set to lose out to Ipswich Town for the signature of the English winger. Bologna and Switzerland’s versatile attacker Dan Ndoye is also said to be a target for United with the Swiss press claiming that the 23-year-old's current side are asking for a fee in the region of £21million to secure his services.

With Ratcliffe and Co still targeting forward players, it appears that the club have been having internal discussions over a new striker to support the incoming Zirkzee.

Premier League duo in United's sights

As first reported by The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell, Manchester United have discussed both Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin internally as they look to further reinforce their striking options. Whilst talks have not progressed beyond these initial discussions, it is interesting to see a striker still high on the club's list of priorities.

Whilst it is unlikely that Toney would want to come to Old Trafford and be the third-choice option behind Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, Calvert-Lewin could be enticed with a fresh start in Manchester.

Across his time in the Premier League, Calvert-Lewin has scored 54 goals in 213 appearances, however has struggled for consistency in recent seasons. The 27-year-old managed just 7 goals in the league last season, suggesting that it may be time for him to leave Goodison Park this summer.

Despite his recent issues, when Calvert-Lewin is on form he is among one of the most dangerous strikers in the league. Speaking after the 27-year-old scored twice in a 3-1 win over Chelsea back in 2019, the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer was quick to praise the striker: “I was hugely impressed with [Calvert-Lewin] today because he absolutely battered the two centre-halves, Zouma and Christensen,

“He didn’t give them a moment’s peace. When you’re a forward, if you can’t win the header then make sure the defender doesn’t win it either. He did it all afternoon."

Whether he arrives as a back-up option or a temporary leading man, United could do a lot worse than an established top flight striker like Calvert-Lewin.

Both teams have one eye on next year's T20 World Cup as internationals resume in New Zealand

Both New Zealand and West Indies will be missing a number of big names due to injury and workload management

West Indies players prepare for the T20I series against New Zealand•Cricket West Indies

Big PictureInternational cricket is back in New Zealand. The last time they played at home – the Christchurch Test against India that ended on March 2 – the coronavirus had just started to send shockwaves across the globe. And things spiralled very quickly. Their tour to Australia later that month was cut short after a behind-closed-doors ODI in Sydney, and they became the last teams to play an international cricket match before the world went into lockdown.Four months later, West Indies became the first international side to embark on a tour during the pandemic, when they visited England in July. New Zealand, though, have had to wait despite their relative success at controlling community spread of the virus. Strict protocols are still in place, but – excitingly for the teams, no doubt – they will be playing in front of a crowd.Watch the cricket on ESPN+

Both sides will be missing a number of big names due to injury or workload management. Many players coming into the series have hardly played any cricket for a while, while a few others are having to deal with the rigours of moving from one biobubble to another. The IPL returnees hardly got to train with the squad, having finished their quarantine just a day before the series. Both teams will look to shake off the rust and brace themselves for relatively busy schedules over the next 12 months, leading to the 2021 T20 World Cup in India. They will also be looking to begin work on sorting out their best XI and back-up options for that showpiece tournament.Form guideNew Zealand LLLLL (Last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlightMany have likened the batting style of wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert to that of Brendon McCullum. The big-hitting top-order batsman had an incredible run in the Super Smash last season and also impressed with two half-centuries against India in the T20I series at home earlier this year. He was part of the champions Trinbago Knight Riders side at the CPL and then flew to the UAE to join his IPL team the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he didn’t get a chance in the starting XI. McCullum himself, who’s the guest coach at the Managed Isolation Quarantine and has been part of the coaching set-up of the Knight Riders’ franchise in the IPL as well as the CPL, thinks Seifert is “in for a breakout season for the Black Caps”.Fabian Allen has shown promise, but the last few months have not been easy for him. He was ruled out of the CPL after missing his flight and did not get a chance in the Sunrisers Hyderabad XI in the IPL. The right-handed batsman provides the complete T20 package: a middle-order enforcer and an electric fielder, who can also chip in with his left-arm spin. He has shown flashes of brilliance in previous CPL seasons and in West Indies’ domestic games, and has earned high praise from the likes of Ian Bishop. He did show what he is capable of in the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka earlier this year, and now Allen’s got a good 12 months to prove why he should get on the flight to India next year.Ross Taylor tunes up at the nets•Getty Images

Team newsKane Williamson and Trent Boult had a great run in the IPL but have been rested for the T20Is. Devon Conway, whose exploits with the bat in the domestic circuit earned him a place in the national side, and pacer Kyle Jamieson could make their T20I debuts in the duo’s absence. Colin Munro’s Big Bash League commitments kept him out of the squad, so Tim Seifert is set to open with Martin Guptill.New Zealand (possible): 1 Tim Seifert (wk), 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Glenn Phillips, 4 Devon Conway, 5 Ross Taylor, 6 James Neesham, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Tim Southee (c), 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Lockie Ferguson, 11 Ish SodhiThe absence of Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo has opened up two middle-order spots in West Indies’ XI. Allrounder Kyle Mayers could get an opportunity, while Keemo Paul, who had opted out of the series against England, provides another right-arm quick option.West Indies (possible): 1 Andre Fletcher, 2 Brandon King, 3 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 4 Rovman Powell/Kyle Mayers, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Kieron Pollard (c), 7 Fabian Allen, 8 Hayden Walsh, 9 Sheldon Cottrell, 10 Oshane Thomas/ Keemo Paul, 11 Kesrick WilliamsPitch and conditionsA run-feast can be expected, but teams defending have not had much luck in recent games at Eden Park. Six of the last seven matches have been won by the chasing team even when the totals have been in excess of 200.There’s a slight chance of a shower in Auckland tomorrow.Stats and Trivia New Zealand have lost their last two bilateral T20I series at home – against India and England. If West Indies beat them here, it will be the first instance of them losing three consecutive T20I series as hosts. Kieron Pollard’s strike rate of 160.26 across all T20s since the start of 2019 is second-best among the 63 batsmen who have scored 1000-plus runs during this period. Only Russell (174.34) has a better strike rate. Pollard has scored 1944 runs at an average of 38.88 since January 2019. Ross Taylor needs 91 more to complete 2000 runs in T20Is and join two other New Zealanders in the club: Martin Guptill (2536) and Brendon McCullum (2140).Quotes”I guess with the schedule we’ve got, we’re obviously looking forward to the back-to-back World Cups coming up. I guess there’s going to be a little bit of rotation with the Test boys coming and going. So, give me an opportunity in the future if the other guys aren’t available as well.”
“We’ll continue being positive and playing our brand of cricket. It’s sometimes tough – winning two T20 World Cups and ranking No. 9 in the world is kind of off-balance, but I believe we’ll get back up there in the rankings.”
