Aston Villa line up £52m "magician" who’d be perfect for Barkley

Aston Villa are at a critical juncture in their journey under Unai Emery. Now that the dust has settled following the euphoria of qualifying for the Champions League with a fourth-place Premier League finish, the hard graft must begin.

Of course, competitive club football will not be contested until mid-August, but the interim must see some shrewd and purposeful work conducted in the transfer market.

Luton midfielder Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley is closing on a shrewd return to Villa Park after spending a season on loan under Dean Smith in 2020/21, but Monchi is moving swiftly and has entered the race for an exciting attacking talent.

Aston Villa transfer news

As per Spanish sources, Aston Villa are in the mix to sign Barcelona winger Raphinha. The La Liga giants would be reluctant to part ways due to concerns about finding a replacement, though he is valued at €60m (£52m) and such a bid could be too tempting to ignore.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

Emery's team are up against Premier League heavyweights Chelsea and Manchester United, though both superpowers fail to offer something that Villa have in their clutches: Champions League football.

How Raphinha could fit in at Aston Villa

Signed from Leeds United in a deal worth up to £55m in 2022, Raphinha has scored 20 goals and added 25 assists from 87 matches for Barcelona, winning the 2022/23 La Liga title.

He has, however, only started 43 league matches across the two campaigns, and at 27 years old he will be eager to play a prominent role that reflects his patent quality, described as a "magician" by former Whites teammate Dan James.

Raphinha might not have had the easiest time in Catalonia but he has maintained an impressive level of potency throughout, ranking among the top 13% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 1% for assists and the top 12% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

If the Brazilian can translate such qualities back to the Premier League, Villa would land a real asset to aid them as they take a seat among Europe's elite.

The 5 foot 9 winger's stylistically similar Premier League players would certainly speak of a tailor-made ability for Emery's squad, with Raphinha scoring 11 goals and adding three assists from 34 Premier League starts for Leeds during his last campaign in England.

Principally, Raphinha would sit on the right and look to maximise his playmaking skills by hitting winding balls above hapless heads and threading surgical passes through to the forward-surging Ollie Watkins, Jhon Duran.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

But to achieve this, he would find a brilliant partner from deep in the aforementioned Barkley, who was remarked to be "not far off Player of the Season" by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson after his excellent campaign with Luton Town.

As per Sofascore, Barkley posted five goals and four assists from 32 top-flight appearances in 2023/24, completing 85% of his balls and averaging 1.5 key passes, tackles and clearances, 2.1 dribbles, 6.3 ball recoveries and 6.1 successful duels per game.

The 6 foot 2 Englishman ranks among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, effectively using his pace and power to plough forward and rent open midfield structures, freeing up space for Raphinha.

A dynamic and creative new partnership could be formed with these signings, allowing Emery's system to shift through the phases and fire on all cylinders next season, both domestically and overseas.

CPL: Courtney Walsh and Mark O'Donnell step in after St Kitts & Nevis Patriots lose top coaching staff

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots have had to rejig their backroom staffers’ line-up just two weeks before CPL 2020 after Simon Helmot, their head coach, and Malolan Rangarajan, the assistant coach, were forced to miss the tournament for different reasons. The franchise has brought in former West Indies captain Courtney Walsh and Mark O’Donnell from New Zealand, who had worked together with Jamaica Tallawahs in 2015, to fill the gaps.Helmot tested positive for Covid-19 on July 27, the day he was to fly out of Melbourne to the Caribbean, while Rangarajan is a talent scout at Royal Challengers Bangalore, and is expected to be involved in the team’s pre-season camp in the UAE from the end of August. Rangarajan will, however, continue to assist the Patriots remotely as a strategic consultant.Current CPL guidelines require all players and support staff to clear Covid-19 tests before they fly out to the Caribbean and fulfil a two-week quarantine period in Trinidad & Tobago, where the entire season will be played.”I tested positive five hours before I was to fly out, and I’m shattered that I won’t be able to be part of Patriots this season,” Helmot told ESPNcricinfo. “I was asymptomatic, and my second test has come back negative, but I’m still in home isolation until the department of health and human services give me a green signal.”Victoria is currently in stage four of lockdown, after a recent spike in cases. Because of my quarantine restrictions, I wouldn’t have been able to make it in time for the season owing to the quarantine protocols. I’m incredibly thankful to Mahesh Ramani, the franchise owner, and the CPL team of Pete Russell, Tom Moody and the others for working incredibly hard behind the scenes to put it together.”Helmot, who was coach when Trinbago Knight Riders won the title in 2015, has a multi-year contract with the Patriots, and is hoping to return to the Caribbean next year. He has also previously been involved with Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash league, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, apart from stints in Bangladesh as head of their high-performance centre.Patriots were also hit by the news, reported by , that 33-year-old left-arm spinner Dennis Bulli has also tested positive for Covid-19, and has been replaced in the squad by 36-year-old Trinidad & Tobago legspinner Imran Khan.Meanwhile, Tallawahs have been hit by the withdrawal of two squad members, Andre McCarthy and Jeavor Royal, who had come into close contact with another player who had tested positive for Covid-19. “To lose both players… it is a big blow,” Tallawahs CEO Jeff Miller told . “But at the end of the day, the safety of the players comes first.”Jermaine Blackwood, West Indies’ leading run-scorer on their Test tour to England, will come in as a replacement player, while young Australian allrounder Antum Naqvi replaces Tabraiz Shamsi, who has had to opt out because South Africa’s borders remain closed.

Imagine him & Eze: Spurs could sign "explosive" star who will "rival" Saka

Tottenham Hotspur took a stride forward last season but Ange Postecoglou is searching for improvements across the board as he looks to take his team further, with patchy form pulling Spurs away from the Premier League's top-four, settling for the Europa League.

Is this a cloaked blessing? Postecoglou has been adamant that the Champions League will not define success as he continues to build, but Europe's elite club competition attracts the finest players, provides the firmest footing.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

A defensive midfielder is coveted but, equally, Tottenham are hoping to sign a versatile wide forward to strengthen and dynamise the existing options. The Londoners might have found a big boost in that regard.

Spurs lining up talented forward

According to Tutto Juve, Tottenham are set to tussle with Manchester United and Newcastle United for the signing of Samuel Iling-Junior, who has been transfer-listed by Juventus for €15m (£13m).

The 20-year-old left winger broke into the Serie A side's first team this season but has been deemed expendable as the Old Lady seek to strengthen this summer.

For such a cheap price, it would almost be foolish not to at least lodge an offer and enter formal discussions; Iling-Junior is highly talented and might even have the perfect skill set to partner up with another summer target.

Dream Eberechi Eze partner

Speaking of Iling-Junior's qualities, former Chelsea and Tottenham academy coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst said in 2022: “Samuel brings the full package to the party, he has got everything. He is almost like a street footballer with his skill and balance. He brings almost everything to the table. He can play seven, eleven, a 10 or even in central midfield.”

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

Iling-Junior featured 27 times across all competitions, scored one goal and added two assists, with his "explosive" ability – as described by analyst Ben Mattinson – making him a tailor-made prospect for an ambitious Premier League outfit, and he could be the perfect partner for fellow Spurs target Eberechi Eze, someone who would no doubt be an exciting acquisition for the Londoners.

The Juve starlet is a maverick, ranking among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for progressive carries and the top 19% for tackles per 90, as per FBref. Pace, power, creativity, and combativeness all feature prominently in Iling-Junior's game.

The former Chelsea youth product, furthermore, has also been praised for his "high energy and work volume as well as dreamy ball skills" by journalist Antonio Mango, suggestingly that he is exactly what Postecoglou needs to add a layer to his left side.

And if Daniel Levy matches Postecoglou's ambition with incisive action and secures Eze's signature this summer, who, as per the Daily Mail, has a £60m release clause in his contract and is attracting interest from Tottenham, then a wonderful new partnership could be born.

Both players favour the left but Eze played regularly as a No. 10, attacking midfielder, last season, scoring the lion's share of his goals when central. Moreover, the Eagles phenomenon averaged 2.6 dribbles and five ball recoveries per top-flight match and thus would bring the energy needed to succeed at Spurs and bounce off the facets of Iling-Junior's game.

With Richarlison among those mooted for a departure this summer and Heung-min Son featuring prominently at centre-forward – which may maintain its regularity even if a new striker is signed – Iling-Junior could find himself earning ample opportunity to impress down the wing, with his playmaking skill leading him to be described as an "assist machine" by journalist Michele Neri.

This would prove especially beneficial in regard to his partnership with Eze, who brings a host of attributes to the table but notably thrives through his goalscoring, actually ranking among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers for non-penalty goals scored and the top 5% for shots taken per 90.

To nail the point home, the aforementioned Mattinson has even predicted that Iling-Junior, England U21 international, could become a “[Bukayo] Saka rival” for England, offering the kind of snap and style in his athletic play to rival that of the Arsenal star, who scored 20 goals and supplied 14 assists in all competitions last term for Mikel Arteta's elite side.

Saka, while catching the eye with his clinical touch, solidifies his position as one of the Premier League's finest with remarkable underlying numbers, ranking among the top 9% of attacking midfielders and wingers for shot-creating actions and the top 10% for tackles per 90. It's for this reason that Spurs' transfer target could successfully imitate his countryman.

Arsenal right winger Bukayo Saka

Tottenham undoubtedly lack an element of pace down the left, and when athletic full-back Destiny Udogie found himself sidelined in the later stretch of the campaign, this was accentuated and then some, with Brennan Johnson pulled away from his favoured right side to try and inject some speed, proving to be less effective however.

With the requisite natural prowess and the ever-improving ability in important moments, Iling-Junior would be a credit to Postecoglou's project and would add the depth and skill needed to impress across multiple fronts next year.

Postecoglou will demand silverware of his players and without signing the likes of Iling-Junior, the Lilywhites simply won't have the firepower to maintain the charge across these different roads of the campaign.

What Spurs' starting lineup could look like after £201m spending spree

Spurs will want to give Postecoglou everything he needs to build a successful side this summer.

Já o Fortaleza aposta no bom retrospecto contra clubes paulistas na temporada.Até aqui, o Leão cearense está invicto contra os rivais estaduais do Tricolor. Tammy Beaumont 'so grateful' to West Indies as women's summer prepares for late beginning

England batter refreshed by enforced break from game during lockdown

Matt Roller02-Sep-2020

England opener Tammy Beaumont•Getty Images

2020 was meant to be a huge year for women’s cricket in England and Wales. Following a T20 World Cup with a favourable group draw, England were set to play home series against South Africa and India; 40 new domestic contracts would be awarded as the new professional domestic structure shifted into place; and the launch of the Hundred would put women’s cricketers on the same platform as the men.But things have not panned out as planned. After their T20 World Cup hopes were wiped out by the Sydney weather, England returned home and were in lockdown within a matter of days as the world began to face the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, the bad news has been relentless: the Hundred was postponed, full domestic contracts were mothballed – albeit with 25 players signing summer retainers – and India and South Africa pulled out of their tours. In that light, you could forgive Tammy Beaumont’s cynicism when England’s enlarged squad were told that the ECB hoped to bring West Indies women over for a late-season tour.”It felt like they might have just been trying to soften the blow of some really rubbish news,” Beaumont admitted. “We thought that was a carrot, but something that might not necessarily happen. As far as I was concerned, it looked like we weren’t going to get any international cricket.”ALSO READ: ‘Women’s cricket needs this’ – Stafanie Taylor on the return to actionBut not for the first time this year, Cricket West Indies (CWI) came to the rescue. Fixtures were ratified and announced less than two weeks after the ECB had first made contact with Johnny Grave, CWI’s CEO, and the touring squad arrived in Derby on Monday ahead of five T20Is at the end of the season.”All we’d had this year was bad news: India pulling out of the tri-series, then South Africa, and the 2021 World Cup not going ahead,” Beaumont said. “For quite a while, it was knockback after knockback. For the West Indies to pull through and help us out was a relief more than anything.”I thought it was an amazing effort by their men’s team to come, as well as their women’s team now agreeing to. They’ve had hardly any training, either together or even within islands, so it’s a really big commitment. We’re so grateful to them for taking up this opportunity to come and play; we really would have had nothing without their generosity and willingness to come.”For Beaumont, the break came at a good time. She is only 29, but has now been playing international cricket for more than 10 years, and the disappointment of the World Cup semi-final washout at the end of another busy winter left her feeling “a bit burned out”.She hopes that an enforced sabbatical from the game during the early weeks of lockdown will eventually prolong her international career – though having waited for so long since returning to individual training in June, she was itching to play competitively before making 2 and 51 in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy’s opening weekend.Tammy Beaumont practises at her home•Matthew Lewis/Getty Images

“We started training before the men had their first Test of the summer. We’ve been doing an awful lot of waiting. For a while it was quite hard to keep going with training, thinking there might be nothing at the end of it.”It was like I’d never held a bat before when I came back, but I think I actually got rid of a couple of bad habits just through how long it had been since I’d played. Having a break was a bit of a blessing in disguise: it was the longest I’ve had off cricket for over 10 years.”I was getting towards a stage where I was almost resenting cricket: I was never at home, never seeing my mates, and it was always one thing after the next. I was always on the go and it was feeling a bit relentless. As much as it’s a privilege to play cricket as your job, it does get quite tiring – you get a bit burned out.”It was a good time to have a mental break from it, which reminded me why I play the game – cricket being taken away from me helped me to really start to appreciate it and be grateful again. It’s a shame to miss six months of playing at my age, but hopefully in the long run it will make me a lot more grateful that my job is to play cricket for my country.”As for the series itself, Beaumont hopes that the narrative that dominated England’s World Cup campaign about her batting position – she was initially used out of position as a finisher before shifting up to open – will be put to bed. Despite England’s convincing wins against West Indies last summer, she is taking nothing for granted against a “very dangerous” side containing some “outrageous T20 players”, and tipped Sophia Dunkley as a fringe player who could enjoy a breakout summer.”It’s a really interesting time for our T20 team: it’s a new cycle, and there are a few spots up for grabs. I don’t think you can ever really complain about your role, particularly with the world-class players we’ve got at the minute. Personally, I enjoy opening the most and that’s where I’d like to be, but if the team needs me to do something else then so be it.”But perhaps the most significant feature of this reduced summer is that women’s international cricket will be shown live on free-to-air TV for the first time since 1993, with the BBC due to broadcast the third T20I; with a peak audience of 2.7 million during the men’s T20I against Pakistan last weekend, Beaumont has high hopes that it will prove to be a seminal moment.”Getting it on terrestrial TV will open so many doors,” she said. “Hopefully young girls watching will tune in, see some role models and maybe see a path for them. It’s such a massive step for the women’s game to have that exposure. Sky have been incredibly supportive of women’s cricket over the years, but to get it onto free-to-air TV is the next step.”

Newcastle expected to make offer for £8.5m+ player from European Champions

As Newcastle United look to put last season's disappointing seventh-placed Premier League finish behind them, they are linked with a player who could fix a major problem at St James' Park.

Toon look to improve on disappointing campaign

The latest transfer news out of St James' Park suggests that Newcastle are looking to put last season's failure to capture European football behind them and build a squad ready to once again disrupt the Premier League's traditional big six.

Defensive reinforcements appear to be a high priority for the Magpies with the latest news linking the Toon with a move for AC Milan's Fikayo Tomori. The English centre back could be made available for £42million this summer, making him an attractive target for Newcastle. Another Englishman abroad linked with a move to Tyneside is Tammy Abraham. The ex-Chelsea man is currently at Roma, with the Italian outfit reportedly offering the player to clubs for just £28 million.

The main area of concern for Newcastle is between the sticks however. With Nick Pope's season-ending injury back in December placing his Toon future in doubt, a fresh face in goal is now their top priority. Additionally, it appears that current backup choice Martin Dubravka could follow Loris Karius out of the exit door.

Burnley's James Trafford is the name most frequently linked with a move to Tyneside with Newcastle reportedly close to completing a £20million move to secure the services of the England keeper. Despite conceding 62 goals as Burnley suffered immediate relegation back to the Championship, Trafford is still viewed as a goalkeeper with a bright future ahead of him.

With a goalkeeper at the top of the PIF's shopping list, Newcastle are also apparrently set to launch a bid for a goalkeeper who was crowned a European Champion last season.

Magpies ready bid for Atalanta's Musso

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Italian press are stating that Newcastle have made contact to sign Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso. The outlet reports that Magpies are joined by Villarreal and Genoa in pursuit of the Argentine shot-stopper.

If the Toon are serious about signing Musso, they will have to fork out more than £8.5 million to tempt the 30-year-old away from Bergamo. The Italian press go on to report that Newcastle see the South American as an "ideal reinforcement" and claim that they could "soon make a concrete offer" to secure his services.

Musso made just 11 appearances in the league last season, however excelled in Atalanta's Europa League campaign. The 30-year-old featured in all but one of his side's games in the competition and kept a clean sheet in the final as Atalanta ran away 3-0 winners against Bayer Leverkusen.

It is clear that Musso would be a perfect fit for Newcastle's situation – the 2-cap Argentina international is a goalkeeper that is comfortable playing back up but can step up when necessary. If Pope is to face an uncertain future at St James' Park, bringing in Musso would be an ideal option for the Magpies' higher ups.
