How Peter Siddle put the wobble back into Australia's attack

The adoption of a key skill has helped propel Australia to the Ashes, and it’s one that England recently mastered

Daniel Brettig at The Oval10-Sep-2019Durham, 2013. Ryan Harris, newish ball in hand, fizzes it down towards the top of Joe Root’s off stump. It takes a little wobble through the air, hits one side of the seam, and darts perfectly away to beat a flummoxed Root and hit the outside of the off stump. It’s a cracker, but almost completely accidental, as Harris admits later to Ian Ward.”Probably not, but I don’t try to do it, I just try to put it in the right spots and let the ball and the wicket do the rest. I’m aiming for the top of off, it doesn’t always go there but it’s great to get one in the right area now and then.””No, not really. When I went off after our spell I said to our analyst ‘how’s my seam’ and he said it was a bit wobbly and I wasn’t very happy with it. So I’m trying to get it nice and straight, but if it comes out like that it’s natural variation.”Later that same year, Harris would bowl a far more famous delivery to Alastair Cook, albeit with the seam so straight that it swings after pitching to hit the top of off. England, victorious at home, are beaten out of sight Down Under. But they still possessed a weapon, particularly at home, that Australia’s bowlers had not yet truly grasped: Harris’s wobbly seam at Durham could be done deliberately, and cause mayhem.James Anderson and Stuart Broad had, in fact, been bowling this type of delivery for years – Anderson’s series-winning haul of 24 wickets on the 2010-11 featured the wobble-seam prominently. Ironically, he’d learned of it from watching Stuart Clark in the Ashes whitewash four years previously, but after watching Mohammad Asif’s impact in England in 2010, he went off to the nets with David Saker, then England’s bowling coach, and set about mastering a skill that wasn’t actually all that complicated. For Australia, there seemed an initial reluctance to divert from trying to land the seam as straight as possible. The chief advocate for the method has been Peter Siddle, helped by the advice of Saker, Broad and Alastair Cook, via their time together in Victoria, Nottinghamshire and Essex respectively. Siddle, though, was on the outer in 2015, not playing until the Ashes had already gone to England.”David Saker who I’ve spent a lot of time with and he’s mentored me for a long time, talking to him even when he was still England coach around how they went about it,” Siddle told ESPNcricinfo. “You mix that in a little bit with having that time with Broady and chatting to him first-hand, rather than just watching him bowl it, how he holds it, how it feels, how to release it. From then it’s just about finding your way, what feels good for you and it’s just something that grew and adapted over time.”Even in the last couple of years playing with Alastair Cook, and this is my fourth series over here, so in that time you do watch the opposition and see how they go about things and what they do with the ball. It is something that in the last couple of years I’ve got better at, and had a lot more success with it.”Repeatedly, Siddle was the most challenging opponent for Australia’s batsmen in the nets in 2015, but there was an element missing: collective unity about which plans to follow, how and when. There was, to some extent, variation, until this January, when there was a very public disagreement between the pacemen and Tim Paine about how to bowl on day one at the SCG against India. A unified plan to strangle England, and a unified method of how to use the Dukes ball, was required.I thought Peter Siddle was almost the bowler of the first Ashes Test – Justin Langer•Getty Images

The penny dropped in Southampton, with 25 Australian cricketers plus just as many support staff squeezed into the Hilton at the Rose Bowl. Among many meetings the use of a scrambled seam stock ball, with straight seam swingers for variation on a rigorous top-of-the-off stump length – plus the occasional bouncer – crystallised as the only way forward. For Siddle, this meant being as much a coach and mentor to the other bowlers as a competitor for one of bowling spots in each Test team.”It’s a pretty simple game-plan, but it takes everyone to buy into it,” he said. “It’s good to see the boys having a crack at it and getting some success, because on wickets over here even when they flatten out, they have still got that little tinge of grass scattered around so they still tend to offer a little bit.”I think it’s showed for both teams that the team that have stuck in there and been patient enough, you’ve been able to get the rewards.”Cummins, Siddle and James Pattinson used the method to good effect at Edgbaston, before Hazlewood subbed in at Lord’s and raised the level a notch further. At Headingley, Pattinson returned, and Australia razed the hosts for 67. And even when Ben Stokes conjured a second-innings miracle on a pitch that flattened out into the easiest batting surface of the series, there was plenty of reason to stay the course. The last piece of the puzzle was Mitchell Starc, who was perhaps the hardest sell. For nine years, he had been a Test cricketer committed to seeking swing, and often benefiting enormously from doing so at his great pace. But through many net sessions, plus tour games at Worcester and Derby, he too learned to get the seam wobbling, and at Old Trafford the variation was critically important: Jonny Bairstow was bowled by the inswing variation in the first innings, then Stokes nicked off to a wobble seamer. Starc had adapted.”It’s been a series where there hasn’t been as much swing, even though this ball they went back to the old Dukes ball because the new one doesn’t quite seam as much,” Siddle said.”That brings the wobble back into it, but that is exciting to see for Starcy. I bowled loads with him early on in the series in the nets and he was just asking questions, having a go at it, and then trying to see what would work for him.”At times it didn’t feel right, and for a bloke that naturally keeps the seam up to swing it, it’s going to feel very awkward because it’s just not natural. But to see him bowl some of those balls and have the success that he did I think it showed that actually listening to what is needed in the conditions sometimes going away from what you normally do, having that success has given the guys a lot of confidence.”Compared to 2013 and 2015, Australia have swung the ball far less, and seamed it far more. They have moved the ball off the pitch even more than England.Amid the adaptation, a revelation too. Australia’s faster bowlers, Starc and Cummins in particular, are able to get additional variations from wobble seam that Anderson, Broad and Siddle cannot.”I think like the scattered grass, sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not,” Siddle said. “If the quicker bowlers are getting it off the little bit of grass patches that are there, it does sometimes look to shoot on. Sometimes they do and it doesn’t bounce as much.”Jimmy and Broady and I, they’ll seam and stand up even though I’m a lot shorter and Jimmy’s a bit shorter, but that extra pace it skids on and probably keeps a bit lower. That’s all a part of England, the natural variation. The big thing too is bowling the right length with it. You can see over here you get a lot of plays and misses, which is pretty natural, but the fuller you are, making them have to 100% commit to the ball, you get the breakthroughs. LBWs and bowleds, there’s probably been a higher number of that than just caught behind the wicket.”So a method first glimpsed in use by an Australian, perfected by a Pakistani, then co-opted by England, found its way back where it started, in the nick of time for the 2019 Ashes. “The teams that have had the most success are the teams where everyone buys in, you bowl in the partnerships at both ends, you build pressure, and you get the rewards,” Siddle said.”I think that’s what’s been so strong about this group, not just the fact there’s six strong, quality fast bowlers in the group, but i think when blokes have come in and out of the team, they’ve been able to fit straight in, stick to the plan and have the success.”

Derby County would love to have Rooney’s "excellent" young talent back

Derby County shrugged off any signs of complacency at the top end of League One by confidently beating Port Vale 3-0 on Saturday, Paul Warne's Rams thankful for the straightforward three points after disappointingly falling to back-to-back defeats before.

Warne would have been delighted for his new recruit Dwight Gayle in the convincing victory, the 34-year-old former Newcastle United man firing in Derby's second of the afternoon to break his Rams duck.

In a hypothetical world, the experienced third-tier boss would love to have a certain Derby wonderkid of days gone by at his disposal to slot into the side alongside his brand-new veteran centre-forward.

Indeed, the idea of Malcolm Ebiowei still lining up in Derby colours would have given the promotion chasers something new in attack away from the seasoned heads currently making up the numbers.

Malcolm Ebiowei's time at Derby

Still just 20 years of age, young Derby hotshot Ebiowei certainly left a lasting impression on the Rams fanbase in such a short period of time when bursting through to the senior fold at the club.

Scoring a staggering seven goals from just eight games for the U18s, then Derby boss Wayne Rooney would thrust the teenage gem into the Pride Park spotlight amidst his side's growing relegation concerns during the 2021/22 season – handing the exciting attacker 16 appearances under his up-and-down Rams tenure.

Ebiowei would dazzle second-tier defences even when everything was turbulent at Derby, helping himself to a goal and two assists in this patch of matches given to him by Rooney.

Described as being "the best player on the pitch" during a 1-1 draw that same campaign against Coventry City by his manager, on top of being an "excellent" talent", it wasn't a shock to see higher-up suitors take advantage of Derby's eventual relegation and circle for the explosive attacker on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

Crystal Palace would win his services, in a move that now – with the beauty of hindsight – hasn't really worked out for the ex-Derby wonderkid.

Malcolm Ebiowei

Never really leaving his mark on the Eagles' first-team set-up – with only five fleeting first-team chances to date – Ebiowei now finds himself out on loan in Belgium playing for RWD Molenbeek away from Palace.

If Derby could rewind the clock and change history, the Rams wouldn't say no to having their former tricky winger back to terrorise League One defences on their way to promotion.

Why Ebiowei would be perfect for Gayle

Derby haven't quite cracked the perfect attacking formula this season, not helped by the likes of James Collins, Martyn Waghorn and Conor Washington causing selection headaches up top with injuries.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

That has been further troubled by the likes of Corey Blackett-Taylor failing to settle since making a major move from Charlton Athletic, leaving spots going forward potentially up for grabs.

Ebiowei would fancy his chances at breaking into the current Derby XI to help Gayle become prolific again, allowing the 34-year-old to be deadly after blowing off the cobwebs to pick up his debut goal against the Valiants.

The 20-year-old attacker would twist and turn third-tier defences on his arrival back to Pride Park, teeing up Gayle at the end of a mazey dart forward to fire home potentially.

Able to play down either the right or left wing, with the ability to even start as the striker if required, the likes of Tom Barkhuizen would be kept on their toes by Ebiowei's emergence back onto the Rams scene alongside key first-teamer Nathaniel Mendez-Laing needing to up his game.

In reality, Ebiowei will need to show Palace he deserves more chances at Selhurst Park playing out in Belgium – already impressing those at Molenbeek with an assist on his first league start against Standard Liege.

Warne and Co will just focus on picking up more wins back in England, hoping that Gayle ends up being a promotion-clinching hero down the line without Ebiowei by his side.

David Warner 100*, Australia 233, Sri Lanka 99

Opener’s maiden T20I ton hands Australia their biggest win and Sri Lanka their heaviest defeat

The Report by Daniel Brettig at Adelaide Oval27-Oct-2019
A yawning victory for Australia, a pugilistic century for David Warner, Steven Smith not even required to bat? Do not adjust your browsers.Aaron Finch’s team set down a brutal marker for the start of their 12-month run to next year’s Twenty20 World Cup by swatting Sri Lanka aside with their highest-ever total on home soil and fourth highest overall, as the captain and a promoted Glenn Maxwell provided the perfect complement to Warner’s triumphant return home after a nightmarish tour of England.Smith, the single biggest reason for Australia’s Ashes retention, was listed to bat at No. 3 but found himself demoted below Maxwell and Ashton Turner in recognition of their relative hitting power. But on a day where the bowlers followed up by holding the decidedly underwhelming visitors for a mere 9 for 99, in the process securing the home side’s biggest ever T20I winning margin and Sri Lanka’s biggest ever T20I defeat, the lack of reliance upon Smith augured well for the rest of Australia’s summer.Warner’s century was surprisingly his first in T20Is, remarkable given his very first innings for Australia had been 89 against South Africa at the MCG more than a decade ago. In control of proceedings from the very start, he reached or cleared the boundary to all parts of Adelaide Oval, delighting a crowd of 16,268 who responded by giving Warner a consistently warm reception following his running battle with persistent booing and abuse in England.Little less significant were the scene-setting innings of Finch – who had not passed 28 in a T20I since July 2018 – and the murderous finishing of Maxwell, leaving Sri Lanka’s captain Lasith Malinga with virtually nowhere to turn to for economy. The most punishment was reserved for Kasun Rajitha. Sri Lanka’s most parsimonious bowler in their recent, unexpected triumph in Pakistan, Rajitha was left wincing at the most expensive T20I figures, an eye-watering 4-0-75-0.He will wonder, in years to come, how Sri Lanka came to be bowling first on what quickly flattened out into a perfect batting track – Malinga electing to send the Australians in on the basis that the tourists did not know what to expect from Adelaide’s drop-in pitch. Its even covering of straw-coloured grass should perhaps have been a giveaway, and after a handful of early plays and misses, Finch and Warner were able to punch their way to the off and leg side boundaries with something approaching impunity.Glenn Maxwell brought out all the shots•AFP

They were aided by some loose Sri Lankan bowling, summed up by how Rajitha offered Warner a wide no-ball that was sent scurrying to the backward point boundary and then a free-hit of obliging line and length that was smote well and truly into the western stands. None for 57 from the powerplay, strong as it looked for Australia, proved to be only a foretaste of the carnage to follow in a temperate afternoon.Finch and then Warner took turns to dominate in an opening stand worth 122 from 65 balls, including 112 from the first 10 overs of the innings. Finch may have been a tad frustrated to see his innings ended at 64 by a top edge to Lakshan Sandakan, but there was soon the reward of seeing Maxwell mix power with invention in the manner that has always made him one of the world’s most compulsively watchable cricketers. All up, no fewer than eight of the innings’ 20 overs went for more than 12 runs, a ledger that thrust Australia inevitably to the tallest tally of all their T20I matches at home, surpassing the 221 fetched against England at the SCG as far back as January 2007.Warner, having lost Maxwell after a union worth 107 from a mere 52 balls, scrounged a single from the final ball of the innings to reach three figures and celebrate in his customary, leaping manner. Amid all the scoring, some credit was due to Nuwan Pradeep’s figures of 0 for 28 from four solid overs. So overpowering was the Australian batting display that Sri Lanka always looked unlikely to get close to their target. Nevertheless, the procession of visiting batsmen was rapid, as Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa all enjoyed their work. Of particular interest to Australia’s planners was Cummins’ comfort bowling first-change, whereupon he claimed two victims in as many balls, and the considerable economy of Agar, who mixed his pace and lengths handily against batsmen determined to dance down to him.Otherwise, though, this was a day for Warner, Finch and Maxwell, and the rare chance for Smith to experience a quiet, uneventful afternoon at the cricket.

Celtic make breakthrough and agree new contract with "powerhouse"

Celtic are now thought to be closing in on a new deal for one Parkhead gem, according to an update on Thursday.

Celtic transfer rumours

It has been a busy season at Celtic Park which began with Ange Postecoglou leaving for Tottenham and Brendan Rodgers returning for a second stint in charge.

A plethora of players were brought in and sold, with the most high-profile exit being Jota’s big-money move to Saudi Arabia, a transfer which has helped the club bring in so many new signings.

On the pitch, things haven’t exactly been how Rodgers would’ve been hoping for, with rivals Rangers currently topping the Scottish Premiership and already winning the Scottish League Cup. In fact, if the Northern Irishman fails to win the league title, there are rumours he could be sacked after just 12 months back at the club.

New additions to the Celtic squad are also expected at the end of the campaign, with a new goalkeeper, winger and striker top of the agenda ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been heavily linked with a move to replace Joe Hart, whereas a permanent move for loanee Adam Idah from Norwich City has also been mooted.

However, alongside any new signings, the Hoops are also working to keep a number of their potential future stars at the club, with a positive update emerging on one of those in question.

Celtic agree new contract with Hoops gem

Scott Burns of The Daily Record reported this week that Celtic are close to agreeing a new contract with youngster Daniel Kelly. The Hoops tabled an extension to the 18-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, and were confident of a deal being signed.

Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke has since issued a further update on talks, revealing Hoops chiefs have made a breakthrough to actually agree a deal with Kelly already, who will net a "significant" pay rise.

Kelly has made an impact at Parkhead since the turn of the year and is highly rated in Glasgow, with the central midfielder making four senior appearances in all competitions this season. He even scored his first professional goal in the recent 7-1 win over Dundee.

Kelly has also come in for praise from Billy Stark, former Celtic player and current Scotland Under-19 boss, who labelled the Hoops gem a “powerhouse”.

“It was great to see young Daniel get that opportunity and I’m looking forward to him joining up with the Under-19s next week. He scored a good goal against Dundee with his right foot, which is his swinger.

“Daniel is a real powerhouse who is strong and committed, with lots of energy. He has a lot of attributes that are needed for a top midfielder and we hope he continues to develop the way he has.”

Aston Villa’s 7/10 star enjoyed his best performance yet vs Wolves

Aston Villa recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

The result means the Midlands side leapfrog Tottenham Hotspur back into fourth place in the league table, strengthening their chances of securing a Champions League space for next season.

Unai Emery deployed a 4-4-2 formation which has worked wonders throughout the current season, partnering Ollie Watkins with Moussa Diaby up top.

The Frenchman enjoyed one of his finest displays in a Villa shirt. Not only did he open the scoring towards the end of the second half, but the winger also provided an assist for Ezri Konsa to score Villa’s second with 25 minutes left.

It was plain sailing after that as the club now head into the tie against Manchester City in a confident mood.

It was Morgan Rogers who perhaps enjoyed his best display since joining from Middlesbrough in January, enhancing his chances of a start in midweek.

Rogers started on the left of a four-man midfield, but he looked to get forward down the flank as often as possible.

Indeed, the youngster succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts (5/5), while showing he was no pushover in his one-on-one battles, winning eight of his 12 ground duels during his time on the pitch.

Rogers also lost possession just four times, along with being fouled twice, and it finally looks as though he belongs in this Villa side.

Journalist John Townley hailed Rogers’ performance against Wolves, giving him a match rating of 7/10 while saying that the winger ‘caused problems when he drifted inside and carried the ball forward’, which is further evidence of how well he played last night.

Morgan Rogers must now start against Manchester City

John McGinn will serve the final game of his three-match suspension against City, while Nicolo Zaniolo and Jacob Ramsey have been less than convincing on the left wing when utilised there this term.

Following his display on Saturday evening, Rogers has done his chances no harm at all with regard to securing a spot in the starting XI against the champions in midweek.

Morgan Rogers

During the reverse match earlier this season, Emery tactically outmanoeuvred his compatriot Pep Guardiola to secure a 1-0 win for the Villa Park side and plenty of bragging rights.

Heading into the clash undefeated across their previous three fixtures, it is clear Emery will be aiming for a positive result against City, while a win could have serious ramifications with regard to where the Premier League title ends up at the end of the season.

In his five top-flight matches, Rogers has succeeded with an impressive 92% of his dribbles, indicating that he could be a major attacking threat against the City backline.

He could use the display against Wolves as a platform to push even harder against the side who are going for their fourth league crown in a row.

Should Villa win, it could be the catalyst which sees them end the season on a high note.

Gabba Test against Afghanistan 'a possibility' – Roberts

Australia may also host India for a day-night Test next summer

Brisbane’s inferior facilities may yet see it hosting Afghanistan under lights in the first Test match of next summer, before the better-equipped venues in Adelaide and Perth claim the first two of four matches against India who are expected to be open to a day-night fixture for the very first time.Cricket Australia’s negotiations with the BCCI for next season’s Test fixtures will be aided by the fact that India will have finally played day-night matches by then, starting with a Test against Bangladesh in Kolkata on Friday. However as the Indian board’s administration makes numerous moves back towards more traditionally bullish postures – under the new presidency of Sourav Ganguly – there will be the question of how many concessions the BCCI will make to CA’s tour schedule preferences, which will include at least one day-night Test. The Test team will be eager for the advantage of hosting India at the Gabba, where they have been unbeaten against all comers since 1988, but this must be balanced with India’s desires and also the fact that Adelaide Oval and Perth Stadium are a long way ahead of Brisbane in terms of amenities, likely crowds and capacity. Kevin Roberts, Cricket Australia’s chief executive, admitted to the possibility of the Gabba hosting Afghanistan for the first Test of summer before the India matches are played elsewhere.”If the Test summer proper did start that way, it’s a possibility, but there’s a lot to work through,” Roberts told SEN Radio. “We don’t have any preconceived ideas on that, we’re in the middle of executing the season, making sure we can deliver a really good experience to fans at the ground and through our broadcasters, and then we’ll get on to planning next season. We’re really keen on making sure we can learn from each season before we approach the next one.”From a playing perspective there’s no doubt there’s a very strong case for the Gabba to host the opening Test from a playing perspective, and that’s consistent with the comments from Shane Warne and Michael Vaughan and others. There’s a number of other perspectives though, we’ve seen governments around the country invest significantly in venues – a new stadium in Perth, the government’s invested upwards of a billion dollars in that, and that adds another dimension.”So you’ve got to consider the fan perspective, the players’ perspective, government perspectives, and that’s the beauty and complexity of sport, everyone has a piece of it, and it’s never simple to balance things across all of those different groups.”The Gabba has long drawn complaints about both its issues of accessibility – being surrounded on two sides by two of Brisbane’s major arterial roads – and also the lack of ambience within a concrete bowl suited far better to football than cricket. An investment of some A$35 million has been pledged by the Queensland state government to improve these areas in concert with the construction of a cross-river rail service linking the Gabba to the Brisbane CBD, though this is not expected to be completed before 2024. In a five-Test Ashes series, the Gabba is guaranteed the first match, but India’s preference for four matches makes things somewhat more complex for CA.”That $35 million will go basically into better amenities for the fans and it all leads towards the cross-river rail opening in about 2024, so a very different experience for fans not only getting to the match but a better experience of the facilities,” Roberts said. “So more contemporary spaces for fans to mingle rather than just coming along and sitting in a seat as you might’ve done 10 years ago.”Either way, the prospect of a day-night Test against India is growing by the day. “There’s no question day-night Test cricket needs to play a stronger role in the Test landscape going forward,” Roberts said. “We’re having productive conversations with India about the prospect of us playing day-night tests against each other in the future. Let’s hope this week’s experience in Kolkata is a really powerful one for them and a good experience that gives them more confidence about more day-night Test cricket to keep going forward.”
