Mitrovic’s Serbia performance helped Newcastle fans make their mind up on keeping him or not

Newcastle United fans weren’t impressed with Aleksandar Mitrovic on Sunday, believing he should not be at the club next season after watching him in action for Serbia against Costa Rica.

The two countries met in the group stages of the World Cup, with the Serbians emerging as 1-0 winners thanks to a sumptuous free-kick from Aleksandar Kolarov.

Newcastle striker Mitrovic had a couple of gilt-edged chances to put the game beyond doubt but failed to make an impact, leaving fans of his club frustrated with his performance.

The 23-year-old was in lethal form for Fulham in the Championship last term, but has yet to prove he has what it takes to shine in the English Premier League and many Magpies supporters now believe his time at the club is up.

Is it time for Rafa Benitez to ensure he exits St James’ Park this summer?

William Carvalho proved vs Morocco he isn’t the solution to Everton’s midfield issues

Everton manager Marco Silva is reportedly keen to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho this summer having worked with him during his spell in charge of the Portuguese giants previously, but perhaps he isn’t the answer to the Merseyside outfit’s midfield issues if his latest Portugal performance is anything to go by.

While The Telegraph reported on June 13 that the Toffees new Portuguese boss is ready to give Morgan Schneiderlin a fresh start at Goodison Park following a tough 2017/18 campaign in which he was heavily criticised by his own fans on Twitter and at matches, also report that he wants to be reunited with Carvalho, rated at £22.5m by Transfermarkt.

The 26-year-old could well be available on a free transfer this summer if he succeeds in terminating his contract with Sporting after he and his teammates were attacked by a group of supporters at the training ground last month following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

His nervous and generally disappointing display for his country in their narrow 1-0 defeat against Morocco in their latest 2018 World Cup fixture has hardly done himself any favours of securing the move he wants this summer.

The 6ft 2in defensive midfielder is usually good on the ball but only had a passing accuracy of 75% against the African nation, while he made just one interception and one clearance, giving away two fouls as well as failing to complete a single successful dribble, as per WhoScored.com.

Silva will want a big upgrade on Schneiderlin if he is to bring a player in for that central area ahead of the new season, but Carvalho’s latest display suggests that he isn’t the man for the job and that the Toffees boss, who has been urged to sign another £22.5m-rated 2018 World Cup attacker, should focus his attentions elsewhere.

West Ham eye summer Bernard move

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, West Ham United are interested in signing Brazilian attacker Bernard on a free transfer this summer.

What’s the story?

New West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has already been busy in this summer’s transfer window, with Lukasz Fabianski, Issa Diop and Ryan Fredericks all arriving at the London Stadium.

[ad_pod ]

Pellegrini is also keen to improve his midfield, and has seen a bid for Fulham captain Tom Cairney rejected as the Hammers prepare to splash the cash this summer.

Signing quality in the final third of the field is also on the agenda, and according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Hammers are interested in a deal for Bernard.

The 25-year-old scored 10 times in 29 appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk last season, but he will be available on a free transfer this summer with his contract running out at the end of June.

Pellegrini is believed to have had a look at Bernard when he was managing in the Chinese Super League, and the Chilean could now bring the attacker to the Premier League.

Should West Ham have a punt?

It is a bit of a no-brainer when considering that Bernard is available for free this summer, but there is no question that the attacker will want a healthy weekly pay packet.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”258359″ player=”12034″ title=”The World Cup Twitter Report”]

Indeed, Bernard is a 15-time Brazil international, and has scored 28 goals and registered 35 assists in 157 appearances in all competitions for Shakhtar.

A number of clubs are sure to be in for Bernard this summer, but the chance to play in the Premier League will surely appeal.

Boasting the ability to create, score goals and dazzle in the final third of the field, the Brazilian, who won three Ukrainian titles with Shakhtar, has the potential to be a real crowd favourite at the London Stadium next term.

Much will depend on just how high Bernard’s wage demands are, but there is no question that West Ham should be having a serious look at this particular deal.

If Liverpool want to win silverware they need to sign this £40.5m-rated South American star

Liverpool fans should be pretty happy with the club’s business so far. The fans from the Transfer Tavern will be eagerly awaiting who the club will sign next following the deal for Fabinho and Naby Keita.

Liverpool need some quality depth to help support their dazzling front three. Dominic Solanke, Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge are not reliable enough if Liverpool want to win a league. The Merseyside club had been heavily linked with Brazilian winger, Malcolm last season and he would be the ideal player for the club to sign.

The Breakdown

According to news outlet, Calciomercato via Talksport, Liverpool have been given a boost in their pursuit of the Brazilian forward. Malcom’s agent revealed that Inter Milan have made a loan offer but that the deal is not good enough.

The winger is ready to leave the Ligue 1 club this summer. He had been heavily linked with a move away last year and had his move away blocked by Bordeaux in January.

Malcolm is one of the hottest prospects in Europe. The winger had a superb season last year in France, scoring 12 goals to go along with seven assists in the league according to Transfermarkt, where he has a £40.5m rating.

At 21-years-old, Malcolm is destined to become one of the biggest players in Europe and it is only a matter of time before he makes a move to a big club. His transfer fee might be reasonably large for a player who will likely be behind Salah and Mane but if one of those two were to leave in the near future, Malcolm would be an ideal replacement.

Would you take him Liverpool fans?

Liverpool journalist James Pearce defends Keita from criticism

The Athletic’s Liverpool journalist James Pearce has defended Naby Keita amid criticism from supporters, per The Red Agenda podcast (February 26, 09:35).

What’s the word?

The Reds are cantering towards their first ever Premier League title and sit 22 points clear of second-placed Manchester City. They have yet to lose.

Keita has made just nine Premier League appearances this season, with only four of them being starts.

One of those came against West Ham United on Monday evening, but he lasted just 57 minutes, and supporters went to town on the 25-year-old on social media following their 3-2 win.

Pearce has previously written that Liverpool paid £52.75m to sign Keita and he claims that he simply needs a period of adjustment in the top-flight.

He said: “It just feels like one step forward two steps back with him, you know. He’s had so many injury problems during his two seasons at the club.

“When you think back to the impact we all expected him to make when Liverpool paid £52.75 million for him, he absolutely lit up the Bundesliga and we just haven’t seen that yet.

“I think you have to cut him some slack because I think the first year was always going to be a period of adjustment, you know, new language, new culture.”

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

Injury issues

Keita, rated at £37.8m by Transfermarkt, has struggled with injuries throughout his time at Liverpool.

He has missed a total of 23 games with various issues, including muscular injuries and, most recently, a groin strain.

In total, that equates to 153 days missed, whereas, during his time at Leipzig, he missed just 20 days and four games.

Misfortune has befallen Keita a number of times this season and one has to believe that he just needs this season to end and for pre-season to begin so that he can get back to his very best.

Pearce is potentially right; next season is the litmus test.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans have hailed one man!

£59.7m Manchester United flop in awe of new PSG team-mate

Manchester United flop Angel di Maria has revealed his surprise at the talents of new team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

Di Maria arrived at PSG from United during the summer following a disastrous season with the Red Devils, in which the Argentina international struggled for regular playing time despite being the most expensive player in Premier League history.

And since his £44million move to France, Di Maria stated that he was shocked at how good Ibrahimovic actually is, comparing him to the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I have played with Leo [Lionel Messi], Cristiano [Ronaldo], [Wayne] Rooney, and now I have the chance to play with Ibra. I’d never realised how good he is, all the moves he has, despite him being so tall,” he said.

“I was very surprised, honestly, from the day I arrived. So hopefully we’ll get along well, because I think he has a lot of quality and a lot to bring to this team.”

The 27-year-old went on to add that after his difficult campaign at Old Trafford, he is now enjoying his football and is hoping for a successful season in Ligue-1 as well as the Champions League.

“It’s really nice here,” he added. “I train every day with a smile on my face – I’m happy to be here, and I have been settling in well with my team-mates. Paris is a really nice city.

“My family has felt very good here from the first day they arrived. That makes it a lot easier for me to focus on football. From the day I arrived here, I could see the quality of the players here and the ambition they have to win – the desire they show in every training session and in every match.”

Di Maria started his career with Argentinian club Rosario Central, joining Benfica in 2007 as a youngster before being picked up by Real Madrid in 2010, helping the La Liga giants to their 10th European Cup in 2014 with a Man of the Match display in the final.

Spurs stars can make England boss think twice about Euro 2016 squad

As England prepare for litmus test friendlies against Spain and France, Tottenham Hotspur stars Eric Dier and Dele Alli will know they have a chance to move inward from the peripheries of Roy Hodgson’s plans.

The Spurs duo may boast just two England caps and 49 Premier League appearances between them, but with engine room regulars Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere both absent, this is unquestionably their opportunity to make Hodgson think twice about his Euro 2016 selections.

The Liverpool captain’s place at next summer’s tournament is ironclad. He outperformed every English midfielder last season and the national team desperately needs players taking on big responsibilities at club level. The Arsenal star’s inclusion, meanwhile, largely depends on fitness. But Hodgson has made special allowances for Wilshere before, seen as the jewel in England’s midfield diamond, and probably will again.

The rest of the midfield slots in Hodgon’s 2016 squad, on the other hand, perhaps excepting the ever-dependable James Milner, are still up for grabs.

[ffc-gal cat=”tottenham” no=”5″]

Michael Carrick’s experience may or may not be called upon, Fabian Delph has plummeted from the limelight since his move to Manchester City, Adam Lallana is struggling to exceed bit-part roles for club and country, Ross Barkley’s robust arrogance certainly isn’t to everybody’s liking and Jonjo Shelvey’s England fate could well depend on whether Swansea turn their stuttering season around.

All have earned Hodgson’s consideration, but none have proved themselves to be indispensable.

Although Dier and Alli won’t be able to earn such status with just four friendlies to go until the tournament in France, they’re entering Three Lions reckoning at just the right time. Both have been nothing short of outstanding for Tottenham this season and their presence in the England camp is a testament to that. If the Spurs starlets can transition their form to international level whilst glossing over their inexperience, they’ll certainly give Hodgson something to think about.

It may be early days, but it’s impossible not to get excited about Dele Alli. Only ten games into his Premier League career, the 19-year-old already looks the part; physical, technical, positionally intelligent and confident enough to blast his senior Spurs team-mates – particularly Erik Lamela – for not passing the ball. Sometimes you can just tell a young player is destined for great things.

His goal against Aston Villa, in which the midfielder simply waited on the edge of the box as chaos ensued inside it until the ball finally fell to him via an expert take, and his impressive performance against Arsenal last weekend, in which Alli effortlessly switched between deep midfield and the No.10 role, both suggest a maturity far beyond the teenager’s years.

Considering how quickly he’s made the step up from League One level with MK Dons to Premier League level with Spurs, it doesn’t seem too outlandish to suggest he could rise to international standard with similar ease.

Likewise, Dier’s influence on Spurs’ impressive defensive record this season, conceding ten times in twelve games, has been immeasurable. Whether defensive midfield becomes his ultimate position remains to be seen but the 21-year-old has shielded his centre-backs as effectively as any other Premier League play-breaker this season, including the likes of Francis Coquelin, Lucas Leiva and Morgan Schneiderlin, averaging 3.1 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 2.4 successful aerial duels per match.

Hodgson may view Alli as too similar to his other options when adding the all-action midfielder’s inexperience to the equation. He doesn’t particularly differentiate from what England already have and Hodgson will feel the natural urge to stick with more established names.

Dier, however, is something a little different; England lack a utility man and a midfielder quite like him, prepared to sit deep and reserve himself purely for the nitty-gritty. Whilst the former Sporting Lisbon starlet’s versatility adds further depth to the squad, his defensive mindset when deployed in midfield could have huge significance for the Three Lions at Euro 2016, should they encounter one of the tournament’s top contenders.

Of course, there is still a long way to go until next summer and countless scenarios could materialise in the meantime. When the honeymoon period is over, Alli may well start looking like what he actually is – a teenager recently plucked from League One – just as the inconsistencies of youth could equally catch up with Dier. Previous call-ups, such Jack Colback and Tom Cleverley, may re-emerge from the wilderness, whilst established options like Carrick and Milner may suddenly fade away.

But the Spurs duo have the opportunity to impress and the talent to make an impact. If their England performances are positive and Tottenham’s impressive start to the season is sustained until its conclusion, both can feel deserving of a place in Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad.

Whether they’ll actually get the call-up remains another matter. But for now, it’s all about taking their chances against Spain and France.

How Arsenal & Man United could benefit from La Liga giants’ managerial shift

It’s rare that a football news story from abroad captures English fans more than matters inside the Premier League during a transfer window, but on Monday afternoon Real Madrid’s decision to axe former Liverpool and Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez made headlines and dominated search engines well beyond Spain’s borders.

Although Los Blancos are only four points off the summit of La Liga, the notoriously ruthless Bernabeu chiefs once again wielded their managerial axe and rid themselves of Benitez, who has, if speculation is to be believed, lost various members of his senior squad and the support of the crowd. Real icon Zinedine Zidane has since stepped up from his role in charge of their reserve outfit – Castilla – and is in temporary charge, but what does this mean for some of the team’s star names?

Well, their futures may be unclear and clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal are sure to be looking over towards Madrid, planning for the possibility of 2016 transfers. Although any moves this month appear unlikely, here are FIVE players that may be interesting Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal.

Gareth Bale to Manchester United

The BIG ONE… reports are already circulating that Man United are ready to take full advantage of any form of uncertainty at Real with a £75m move for Gareth Bale. In reality, it’s more likely that the Red Devils will have to pay close to double that figure for the player who still holds the record as being the most expensive in the history of the game (Los Blancos paid Spurs £86m in 2013), but if any club on the planet could fund such a move it would be the Manchester giants.

We’re yet to see how Zidane opts to use Bale – who is ‘disappointed’ by Benitez’s exit – or how a potential experienced manager to come in at the end of the season, or earlier, views the Welshman, but with the ex-Southampton flyer having endured some tricky times in Spain, he could be tempted by a move to familiar territory in the very prime of his career.

Jese Rodriguez to Arsenal

https://vine.co/v/e9KDJZq5rB6/embed/simple

Although not quite a player of the calibre Arsenal fans may be seeking as they look for their club to move up to the next level, Jese is by no means an option to be overlooked. The young forward has been in and around the Real first-team for much of the past few seasons, but with his game time having been relatively limited, at the age of 22 he’s at somewhat of a crossroads in his career.

Perhaps Zidane will look to use the starlet more often, but with players like Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco, James Rodriguez, Karim Benzema and Luka Modric all available, it appears unlikely that he’ll be made a figurehead of a new-look team.

James Rodriguez to Manchester United

https://vine.co/v/eIeQ7OhUUXw/embed/simple

Another high-profile player to be linked with catching a flight from Madrid to Manchester is Rodriguez. The Colombian was one of many stars to have grown ‘unsettled’ under Benitez at the Bernabeu, with the Spanish coach’s more defensively responsible style of play having restricted the talented ex-Porto and Monaco man.

If ‘Zizou’s’ playing style is anything to go by, he’s probably appreciate Rodriguez’s talents, but the Frenchman has plenty of options and may even be eager to bring a few names from his ‘Castilla’ side up to the big time, which could have an impact on the 24-year-old’s status.

Isco to Arsenal

Although Arsenal have a wealth of attacking midfielders, a player of Isco’s quality would be a welcome addition. The creative playmaker has long been talked about as one of Spain’s best youngsters, but since his 2013 move from Malaga to Real, he’s found it difficult to cement a regular role in the starting XI, either as a ‘No.10’ or in a deeper, central midfield position.

Arsenal are one of many sides to have been aligned with a move for the silky passer, who at the age of 23 is sure to be desperate to play week in, week out for a top quality club side. Will Zidane use him? We’ll have to wait and see.

Toni Kroos to Manchester United

This would be a stunner of a move, but according to respected football journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Kroos could be “tempted” by Man United. And we’re sure the Manchester side will be equally as tempted by the German playmaker, who looks to possess the sort of creativity LVG’s midfield appears to lack.

Although it could be seen as a step down from Kroos’ perspective, it remains to be seen what role he will play under Zidane or his eventual successor, who may opt to partner Luka Modric with a more defensively resolute option.

Man United boss hints at Old Trafford exit following latest defeat

Louis van Gaal has hinted that he may resign before being sacked as Manchester United manager, as reported by The Independent.

United are on a run of seven games without a victory and have lost their last four outings, including this afternoon’s 2-0 away defeat at Stoke City.

And with the Dutchman’s Old Trafford future hanging in the balance, van Gaal hinted earlier that he may decide to walk the club can make drastic action.

WANT MORE? >> Man United transfer news | Latest transfer news

He said: “It is not always the club that has to fire or sack me.

“Sometimes I do that by myself, but I am the one who wants to speak first with the board of Manchester United and my members of staff and my players.

“I have received backing all the time but we have lost so there is a new situation.

“I feel the support of my players and my board. The fans will be disappointed but that is logical after four defeats.”

United’s title challenge is in serious danger of being over before the turn of the year following four straight defeats, one of which secured their exit from the Champions League having fallen to a 3-2 defeat to Wolfsburg.

Van Gaal’s side have not won in the Premier League for over a month now, with their last victory coming via a 2-1 scoreline away at Watford.

Since then they have drawn with Leicester City and West Ham and suffered humiliating defeats to the likes of newly promoted Bournemouth and Norwich, followed by today’s loss to Mark Hughes’ Stoke.

The Independent were reporting last week that the recently sacked Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is eager to take the Manchester United job should Louis van Gaal leave his post in the future.

Why struggling clubs should take a chance on this ex-Man United hero

It can hard at the top and especially when you’ve struggled with injuries.

Nemanja Vidic is a name most clubs would sit up and take notice of – as long as they could afford his wages, that is. A full international with European and Premier League experience, he is a player still worth considering and he is now a free agent.

The 34-year-old defender joined Inter Milan on a free transfer in July 2014, shocking Manchester United fans with his decision to leave and try somewhere new. In all, Vidic made just 28 appearances for the Nerazzurri, scoring one goal.

[ffc-gal cat=”manchester-united” no=”5″]

His limited time in the blue and black stripes of the San Siro side is all because of injury. Hernia and back injuries meant the centre-back failed to feature for Inter this season and he is now on the lookout for a new club.

Vidic recently told Italian media: “Thanks to all the Nerazzurro family and to the Inter fans. I wish the club all the best for the future. Forza Inter!”

Last season, Inter limped to an eighth-placed finish in Serie A, with former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini taking over midway through the season. Inter have enjoyed a revival under Mancini this season, despite losing top spot to Napoli, and after a couple of draws and a defeat they sit joint third with Fiorentina with 41 points, just six points adrift of top spot. However, Vidic has not been a part of that revival.

The Serbian has been dogged by injuries in Italy, as he was in the latter stages of his United career, but he is not thought to be considering retirement. A number of MLS teams have reportedly been in touch and a couple of clubs in the Premier League have taken notice following the announcement that he was leaving Inter.

Vidic won five Premier League titles with United, as well as three League Cups and the Champions League in 2008. He retired from international football in 2011 after making 56 appearances for his country.

According to Russian newspaper Izvestia, Vidic has sent out a plea to his former employers to sign him up next month. Vidic played for Red Star before joining Spartak Moscow and it’s the Moscow club Vidic has made his plea to. Spartak are expected to be active in the market as they aim to reduce the seven-point gap between themselves and league leaders CSKA Moscow.

But it is understood the Russian giants have reservations over Vidic’s fitness and would only consider offering him a deal if he was prepared to accept a significant pay cut. Vidic spent two years at Spartak before signing for United in 2006.

One of Manchester United’s problems this year is a defence, which is as solid as custard and in no way looks like the United defences of old. The days of Bruce and Pallister, rock solid at the back, and Ferdinand and Vidic are over, as Smalling and occasionally Blind play together, but resemble the Chuckle Brothers at times.

WANT MORE? >> Man United transfer news | Latest transfer news

Vidic came to United 10 years ago and became a lion in defence and a leader under Ferguson. Manchester United don’t have that type of player any longer – no one aggressive or as quick as Vidic was, and even the news that Vidic is available won’t alert the Old Trafford club.

To consider Vidic back in the red shirt is romantic at best, but will not work – not with the injuries he has had and it would be wrong to go back to a club where you are highly thought of, only to cough and splutter your way out of their belief in you.

United have their injury problems with Shaw out, Rojo recovering and Phil Jones’ career blighted by one injury after another, but Vidic isn’t the answer.

Teams that need that extra defensive cover until the summer might take a chance on him. Although nothing has been said, any of the bottom four or five could use his experience as they fight to stay in the division.

Long term, it would appear that time, age and injury have taken their toll on Vidic, but as a short term fix, it is entirely possible for someone.
