West Ham Eye £21m "Gladiator" As A Zouma Upgrade

West Ham United are planning a summer swoop for a defender who is thriving in a major European league.

What’s the latest West Ham transfer news?

According to the ever-reliable EXWHUEmployee, West Ham are targeting Konstantinos Mavropanos and have held talks with the Stuttgart defender.

The respected insider took to social media to say: "As we exclusively broke on our Patreon last night [Tuesday]. West Ham are in talks with Stuttgart for former Arsenal defender and Greek international Konstantinos Mavropanos. We will bring you more as we have it."

The club’s renewed search for a centre-back has become a priority after Harry Maguire’s proposed £30m move to the London Stadium was abandoned.

Alongside £21m-rated Mavropanos, Bayer Leverkusen’s Odilon Kossounou is also on the West Ham radar according to further reports, as David Moyes searches to bolster his defensive options.

What does Konstantinos Mavropanos offer?

English football fans will remember Mavropanos for an uninfluential and scattered stint at Arsenal, in which he forged just eight appearances for the senior team and failed to pinpoint any notable consistency.

The Greek actually featured on more occasions for the U21 side and was sent out on two loans. The second of those came with Stuttgart in 2020, and in Germany, he has flourished into a wonderfully accomplished presence at the back.

In total, he has played 89 times for Stuttgart in all competitions, and he sealed a permanent move to the club in May 2022 after avoiding relegation.

On the ball, he is an embodiment of a modern-day defender – ridiculously comfortable and composed, and this is mirrored through his rank within the best 10% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for shot-creating actions per 90, progressive carries per 90, progressive passes per 90, and successful take-ons per 90.

konstantinos-mavropanos

These technical tendencies are then complemented by dominant defensive intelligence and positioning, as he sits within the top 5% for interceptions and aerials won per 90, as well as the highest 19% for blocks per 90.

His former manager Pellegrino Matarazzo has showered the £13k-per-week titan with praise, saying: “He always shows in training that he can produce magic. He's got heart, energy, and determination. We need guys like him. "He's our gladiator – a monster in terms of physique.”

This acclaim has been echoed by ex-Stuutgart sporting director Sven Mislintat, who added: “Dinos is a prototype of everything this team stands for: always working, with a desire to win and to constantly improve.”

From a West Ham perspective, the 19-cap international could be a crucial addition to the squad, and he could be a necessary upgrade on Kurt Zouma.

The Frenchman is a solid defender, and undoubtedly a useful component of squad depth, whilst also possessing a commendable amount of experience.

But, his mobility and patchy fitness record are two issues that can be exploited and to rely upon the 6 foot 3 mountain in yet another gruelling season of balancing multiple competitions is hugely risky.

In two seasons for the Hammers, he has already missed 22 games through injury, and in Mavropanos, Moyes would possess a more dynamic, technically astute, and equally physical option.

The 25-year-old outperforms Zouma for progressive passes per 90 (5.00 vs 1.37), progressive carries per 90 (1.32 vs 0.14), tackles per (1.92 vs 0.33), interceptions per 90 (2.52 vs 1.28), and blocks per 90 (1.50 vs 0.85).

Zouma’s passing statistics are understandably low, given Moyes’ low-possession, rigidly deep, counter-attacking style of play, but you would expect his defensive numbers to boom. But Mavropanos trumps his peer in all metrics and on paper, it would be an extremely logical transfer.

Wouldn't turn down vice-captaincy duties – Anderson

The England fast bowler feels he has held a leadership role for a long time in the team, and will happily accept the position of Joe Root’s deputy if asked

George Dobell in Adelaide06-Nov-2017James Anderson would happily accept the vice-captaincy for the Ashes tour if offered it.With Ben Stokes, England’s official vice-captain, currently unavailable, Joe Root has confirmed he will name a deputy for the Ashes series in the next few days. That vice-captain will be expected to captain the team should Root be injured at any stage during the series.Alastair Cook, who has captained England in more Tests than anyone, remains the most likely choice. But Anderson and, perhaps Stuart Broad – who used to be England’s T20 captain – are also sure to be considered. And while England may be reluctant to give the role to a seam bowler for fear that injury should cause further complications, Anderson feels he has long held a leadership role within the team.”Of course I wouldn’t turn it down,” Anderson said. “In the last couple of years, I’ve seen my role in the team as a leader. It’s kind of your responsibility to be a leader. It’s part and parcel of the job as a senior player having played over 100 Tests.”There are a lot of players on this tour who have not played in an Ashes series before and not toured Australia before. So our job is to try and help as much as we can. It’s kind of your responsibility to be a leader. With young bowlers coming into the team I’ve tried to help out as much as I can. I think it’s important that Joe has people he can rely upon.”England arrived in Adelaide on Monday ahead of the first first-class fixture of the tour on Wednesday. The match, a day-night affair, will provide an opportunity to gain experience with the pink Kookaburra ball that will also be used in the day-night Test in the city at the start of December. England have played one previous day-night Test – at Edgbaston in August – but they used a Duke’s ball.James Anderson limbers up during England training•Getty Images

“I’ve heard the pink Kookaburra does swing a bit more,” Anderson said. “I guess finding out how much the ball swings and what time of day it swings will be really useful for us. We spoke to the South Africans in our summer and they said it was difficult for batsmen in the twilight period and when the lights came on.”While Steven Finn and Moeen Ali remain unavailable for the game in Adelaide due to injury, the rest of the squad emerged from the warm-up game in Perth unscathed. They will train at the ground under lights on Tuesday.”The couple of days in Perth was more about getting the cobwebs out and trying to get the body moving again,” Anderson said. “As bowlers we’ve got to find our feet and get overs in our legs quite quickly. It was a good run out for us.”Anderson also revealed that he had watched “as much of the Australia team as possible” over the last year or so in preparation for the Ashes.”The main thing is for us to focus on what we do well and our strengths,” he said. “But we need to know things about the opposition, so keeping tabs on them is a sensible thing to do. I’ve tried to watch as much as possible of the Australia team over the last year or so knowing that we had an Ashes coming up. I’m sure in the next couple of weeks we’ll do more research.”

From Bruce Reid to Mitchell Johnson: Five memorable Ashes collapses

ESPNcricinfo recalls five occasions in which England’s batting malfunctioned after a seemingly serene start to an Ashes innings.

Andrew Miller15-Dec-2017England let slip a golden opportunity on the second day at the WACA, as they lost their last six wickets for 35 runs to squander the gains made in a 237-run stand between Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow. It was not, however, an unheard-of turn of events. ESPNcricinfo recalls five other memorable Ashes collapsesBruce Reid appeals for an lbw against Alec Stewart•Getty Images

8 for 47 – Melbourne 1990-91: 103 for 2 to 150 all out In the early days of England’s 1990s ignominy, it was possible still to dream – even after a rancid defeat in the first Test at Brisbane had left Graham Gooch’s men playing catch-up as the focus shifted to the MCG. And for three-and-a-half days they brawled above expectations. A David Gower century and six wickets for Angus Fraser secured a precious lead of 46, which Gooch and Wayne Larkins then extended to 149 with nine second-innings wickets intact – the perfect platform for an epoch-altering win. Enter Bruce Reid, Australia’s Metal Mickey left-arm seamer, who dropped it on a length from the full extension of his 6’8″ frame to claim innings-wrecking figures of 7 for 51. Give or take a couple of ducks, England’s final scorecard bore an uncanny resemblance to a toll-free helpline – 0800 810010 – as that winter’s Ashes campaign was declared a national emergency.Australia celebrate the wicket of Mark Ramprakash which began England’s collapse•Getty Images

7 for 40 – Adelaide 1998-99: 187 for 3 to 227 all out Another series in the balance, another innings of flickering hope. England had been baked alive on the opening day at Adelaide – put out to field in 40-degree heat and made to suffer by a Justin Langer epic. But Darren Gough and Dean Headley performed heroics to keep Australia below 400, and while Nasser Hussain and Mark Ramprakash were adding 103 for England’s fourth wicket, Australia were just beginning to rue the absence of the injured Shane Warne. But the meltdown was only ever a matter of time. It came soon after the resumption on the third morning when Ramprakash edged to second slip. The rest “strode on and off again as fast as models on a catwalk,” wrote Wisden, as Hussain was left high and dry on 89 not out.Michael Vaughan pulls during his 177•PA Photos

7 for 47 – Adelaide 2002-03: 295 for 3 to 342 all outIf careers could be judged by their zeniths alone, then the Michael Vaughan who tore into Sri Lanka, India and Australia in 2002-03 would have a serious case to be considered the greatest England batsman of all time. He attained a fever pitch of elegance, aggression and durability to rack up seven mighty hundreds in the space of as many months, including arguably the finest of the lot – 177 on the first day of Adelaide. His onslaught, in the shadow of a bruising Brisbane defeat, featured drives, pulls and a tint of controversy after a disputed catch on 19. But most of all, it featured head-scratching impotence from one of the finest Test attacks ever assembled, and as he carried England to 295 for 3 in the final over of the day, England had a toe-hold in the campaign. But then, in tore Andy Bichel for one last tilt. Vaughan nibbled fatally to slip, and England knew there and then that they were toast.Ian Bell avoids a short ball by Mitchell Johnson•Getty Images

9 for 81 – Brisbane 2013-14: 55 for 1 to 136 all outIt’s hard to recall now quite how optimistic England had been at the end of the first innings of the 2013-14 Ashes. Stuart Broad had risen above the bear-baiting from the Aussie crowds and media to claim 6 for 81, and though a certain Mitchell Johnson claimed, prettily brazenly, that Australia’s 295 would prove to be more than enough, England quietly scoffed at his assertion – this was the same Johnson, after all, who had been ridiculed in his previous two Ashes campaigns, and had played no part at all in the 3-0 defeat in England earlier that year. Whoops. Even during a disarmingly erratic start, it was clear that Johnson’s pace was of a register few have ever matched. Sure enough, he returned before lunch to brand England’s batting with some of the most searing heat imaginable.A collapse that didn’t matter: David Gower acknowledges his century•Getty Images

9 for 93 – The Oval 1985: 371 for 1 to 464 all out But, it’s not always doom and gloom when England’s batting goes haywire – as was amply proven in a run-laden sixth Test at The Oval in 1985. Needing only a draw to reclaim the Ashes, after an innings win at Edgbaston, David Gower and Graham Gooch ground Australia’s resistance to dust with a mighty stand of 351. Gower’s 157 capped the most glorious year of his career – victory as captain in India, and now 732 runs in a triumphant home summer – while Gooch’s career-best 196 confirmed his second coming after a three-year ban for touring South Africa. But thereafter the innings turned a little odd. Geoff Lawson and Craig McDermott tore through a middle order in which England’s next-highest score was 16. But it mattered not. Australia folded twice in the space of a day and a half to wrap up a 3-1 series win.

Tottenham Remain Keen On Signing "Important" £60m Star

Tottenham Hotspur have now been provided with a new update on their pursuit of FC Porto winger Pepe, who they have already submitted a bid for this summer.

Who are Tottenham signing this summer?

By now, Tottenham fans will be well aware that Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson has shot right up to the top of their shortlist, with journalist Alasdair Gold reporting that the winger is Ange Postecoglou's "number one attacking target."

Postecoglou believes Johnson is the "perfect fit for his Spurs system", but Gold makes it clear that it will be a tough deal to orchestrate, and if it does happen, it will be late in the window, with Forest keen to hold out for a fee of around £50m.

However, the manager does have some alternatives in mind, including Jota, who he worked with during his time at Celtic, although the Portuguese winger is not thought to be as high on the wanted list as the Nottingham Forest star.

Last week, the Lilywhites submitted a bid in excess of €45m (£38.6m), including an additional €15m (£12.9m) in goal bonuses for Pepe, but faced rejection from Porto, who are demanding a fee of €70m (£60m) if they are to sanction his departure.

Despite having their opening bid rejected, reports from Spain indicate Tottenham remain keen on signing the winger before the summer transfer window closes, with the board well aware that he could go some way to replacing Harry Kane's goal-scoring contributions (via Caught Offside).

Bizarrely, the report claims the FC Porto star has a market value of just €30m (£26m), far less than the bid Spurs initially made, which does not seem very likely, considering he has a release clause of €75m (£64m) included in his contract.

As previously mentioned, the Portuguese club are hoping to receive a fee of £60m, so you'd think there is no chance they let the Brazilian leave for less than half that amount, but it remains to be seen whether the Lilywhites come back with a higher offer.

How good is Pepe?

The 26-year-old has been a key player for Porto over the past two seasons, since arriving at the club from Gremio, and he has made year-on-year improvement, after picking up four goals and four assists in his first campaign.

Last season, the versatile winger amassed 11 goal contributions in the Liga Portugal, with journalist Fernando Campos claiming he's been "getting better and more important in Sergio Conceicao's team."

It is very impressive that the former Gremio man has regularly managed to weigh in with attacking contributions with his new club, but his main strength is his dribbling ability, ranking in the 99th percentile for successful take-ons per 90 in the past year.

When compared to his positional peers, the attacker also places in the 98th percentile for progressive carries per 90, and his attacking threat is also highlighted by the fact he is in the 94th percentile for touches in the opposition area.

Pepe could be a fantastic signing for Tottenham, but he will not come cheap, considering Porto are set to hold out for a fee of £60m.
