Deal For £34m-Rated Player On Horizon For Manchester United

A move by Manchester United to land Jeremie Frimpong looks increasingly likely, with a report from SportBILD (via Sport Witness) suggesting that a deal to send the player to Old Trafford "beckons".

Are Manchester United signing Jeremie Frimpong?

The defender has become a first-team regular for Bayer Leverkusen this season, playing in 33 Bundesliga outings – the most he has managed over the course of his career to date. The club have reaped the rewards of getting the player on the field more, too, with Frimpong managing eight goals and seven assists so far – again a career-best for the wing-back.

And while achieving an average WhoScored rating of 7.15 for the club in the league, the 22-year-old has become hot property. Showcasing his ability to do it at the top level, his rating puts him as the 17th-best player in the entire division (min. 18 apps) and above people like Alphonso Davies – understandably catching the attention of sides who now want to sign him in the process.

One of the most heavily interested sides are Premier League giants Man United, who have been linked with a switch for the defender on several occasions over the last few months. Erik ten Hag remains keen to add some more depth to his side in the right-back position and the Bayer Leverkusen man would fit the bill in that respect.

Jeremie Frimpong slides for the ball as Bayer Leverkusen play AS Monaco in the Europa League.

Now, it seems that a deal to send him to Old Trafford is becoming more likely. That's because a report from SportBILD (via Sport Witness) states that a move to the Red Devils "beckons" for the player.

Who are Man United signing at right-back?

If United do pull off a deal to bring in Frimpong, they could have themselves a top-level player – and for a good fee, too.

For starters, the CIES Football Observatory suggests that his value is around the €40m (£34m) mark, which, if accurate, makes him not too expensive considering what he could potentially offer to United.

He's also been praised highly by Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who stated that the defender is a "special" player and has a "big impact" for the team when he is on the field. It's high praise indeed from a manager who accomplished plenty as a player himself.

Frimpong would also offer plenty offensively. Despite his position on the field, he is the second-highest goalscorer in the Bayer Leverkusen squad this season, while his assist tally also ranks him second in the side. He would therefore enable United to get on the front foot more and could offer them a real upgrade on that right flank if he was able to replicate his Bundesliga form in the Premier League.

Pakistan deserve No.1 ranking after thriving in exile – Misbah

Pakistan deserve to be rated the No. 1 Test side, according to their captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, in recognition of their success despite being unable to play any games at home

George Dobell at The Oval14-Aug-2016Pakistan deserve to be rated the No. 1 Test side, according to their captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, in recognition of their success despite being unable to play any games at home.Pakistan won the final Test against England at The Oval to square the series 2-2. It means that, should Sri Lanka defeat Australia by a margin of 2-0 (or better) and West Indies draw the Port of Spain Test, Pakistan would claim the No.1 spot for the first time since the official rankings were introduced in 2003. Their highest placing to date is second, which they achieved following the series win over England in the UAE at the end of 2015.Misbah believes that, for a side obliged to host its home series in the UAE due to concerns over the security situation in Pakistan since 2009, that is a remarkable record.”This team deserves that for six years of not playing any games at home,” Misbah said. “Sometimes people think it’s really easy for us playing in the UAE. They think the wickets suit us and we win there.Misbah on …

Mohammad Amir:”He did OK. He was unlucky a lot of catches were dropped off his bowling. But overall his behaviour and attitude and commitment were there. He played a crucial innings with Younis Khan, too.”

England playing in Bangladesh: “It’s their decision but if a team is not playing at home, it’s really not good for cricket. People in Bangladesh love cricket. They have a craziness for it. If they are deprived of hosting cricket, it could be a big loss for them.”

“But just living every day away from your country, without your family and friends, and playing every game away from Pakistan, is really difficult. It’s mentally tough.”I can only see my mother once a year. I only see my sister once a year. Some of my friends, I could not see for three or four years because of these commitments. We are out of the country all the time. There are a lot of tours and even our home series are in the UAE. We go from West Indies to New Zealand to Australia. It’s not easy.”But still the team is winning. Still the team is playing competitive cricket. There were lots of questions before we came here about whether we could only play in Asian conditions, but we have shown that we are good enough to play even in these conditions. At one stage we were winning this series.”I’m really proud of this team and I think that, if we can be No. 1 after all these results, then we really deserve that.”The key to Pakistan’s success was, according to Misbah, their self-belief. Despite a thumping loss at Manchester and a final-day collapse that cost them the Edgbaston Test, they showed admirable resilience to fight back at The Oval. And while he admitted that losing from an apparently strong position at Edgbaston still hurt, he felt the final result was “not a bad score”.”I am happy with the character shown by the Pakistan team,” Misbah said. “After two defeats, they fought back in this game and won. This is pleasing for me. This team has character and stood up the occasion, fought hard and levelled the series. Winning this match means a lot.”The important point is that you should keep believing as a team and individuals. These players have been playing for six years and they have performed in difficult situations. Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali and Younis Khan have played winning knocks under pressure and our bowling always stands out. We knew that, when the batsmen found form and we were able to combine our performances with the bat and the ball, we could do well. We had belief throughout the series.”After the situation we were in after the third day at Edgbaston, I am a bit disappointed that the series is level. Losing from there is a little disappointing. But credit must be given to England.”While recent Pakistan tours to England have sometimes ended in acrimony – the Oval Test of 2006 was awarded to England after Pakistan refused to return to the field after an interval following allegations of ball-tampering, while the 2010 series was overshadowed by the spot-fixing scandal – it was noticeable this time that supporters of both sides gave the Pakistan team a warm ovation as they completed a lap of honour around the boundary. It was, Misbah felt, a fitting celebration for a team and a nation making the anniversary of their Independence Day.”Cricket matches are won and lost,” Misbah said, “but to win people and supporters, that is really important. This series has been played in good spirits. Both teams fought well and everyone will remember this series for the sort of cricket we played. There were no off-field issues. We are really happy to conclude the tour on a pleasing note. On and off the field we made friends.”Keeping in mind it was Independence Day, it was something special to draw the series here after being 2-1 down. The way the team fought back… I’m a really happy captain.”

Jones the history boy makes Middlesex toil for the upper hand

A maiden first-class century from Rob Jones left Middlesex with work still to do if they are to seal the victory that would all but seal the Championship

On the day when a group of probably well-intentioned executives pondered changes which might push the County Championship to the back of domestic cricket’s broom cupboard, a 20-year-old batsman with a sound technique and guts to share showed why it should occupy a precious place on the game’s mantelpiece. It is doubtful whether many of those meeting at Lord’s this dreamily perfect Wednesday had a clue who Rob Jones was when they commenced their discussions. However, by the time they broke up in early afternoon at least four chief execs were surely keen to discover more about the 20-year-old makeshift opener whose maiden first-class century had frustrated Middlesex’s title ambitions and given a major fillip to Lancashire’s hopes of avoiding yet another demotion to the Second Division. Those hopes may yet be smashed. Having conceded a first-innings lead of 68, Middlesex’s curiously dozy batting in the evening session left them with a lead of just 140 and only six wickets in hand. Their best chance of winning the game – we can forget about a challenging declaration – may rest in their being bowled out for a modest score and Lancashire messing up a run chase when trapped between boldness and restraint. Such an outcome would leave James Franklin’s side at least 20 points clear of their two rivals.Jones reflects on his maiden hundred

“Words can’t describe it, it’s so special. I can’t believe it, it’s a bit of a blur. My job now is to go again tomorrow! I’ll savour this, because it’s pretty special. The moment meant so much. I love playing for Lancashire, I really do. It’s a boyhood dream.
“This morning we spoke about trying to bat the whole day and grind it down. It was a tough ask to rebuild from 6 for 4 but I just stayed in my bubble, it didn’t matter how many balls I faced, just soak up the pressure.
“Dot balls are fine at that stage of the game and you have to keep soaking it up. I don’t know what I was thinking! You have to have a good attitude, a positive mindset, block but also put the bad ball away.”

Faced with vague threats, the blessed County Championship is producing a climax to cherish, one which illustrates both its complexity and fascination. If Middlesex lose, the top three teams in Division One would be covered by five points going into a final week of the season when two of them meet and the other wonders if this might be the best September anyone in Somerset can remember. We may find that we can place a value on a city franchise but you cannot put a price on the Championship. And as if to demonstrate cricket’s gloriously different tempi, a day which reached its climax with Jones’s six over long-on and a century celebration which would not shame an Oscar winner began as something of a slow burner. The morning’s cricket was very careful and quite marvellous. Needing 76 runs to avoid the follow-on when play began, Lancashire’s batsmen had scored all but ten of them in 33 overs before spectators were allowed to amble on the outfield in the lunch interval. Some people seemed to do nothing more purposeful at this time than stroll around, perhaps pondering that they would be granted this gentle privilege on only one more day this summer. But if Lancashire’s progress had been stately, its pace was unresented. Saving the follow-on is a serious business, even at times like these when it is unfashionable to enforce it. Yet there seemed little doubt that Franklin would have done so had his seamers enjoyed early success. Instead of that, though, they were met with bats both broad and straight as Jones and Liam Livingstone took the score to 138 – and their sixth-wicket partnership to 102 – before Livingstone’s unusually crooked stroke edged Steven Finn to Ollie Rayner’s safety-deposit hands. That wicket fell after an hour’s play and the very ball after Livingstone had reached his fifty off 117 balls. His was a fine innings because it was played under pressure and against type; moreover it helped Jones set a Lancastrian pattern characterised by stern resistance rather than supine decline. That theme was followed either side of lunch by Tom Bailey, who made 53 in 148 minutes during and put forward a fair case that his maiden first-class fifty might justify his being reclassified as a bowling allrounder. It was Bailey’s edge off Murtagh which saved the follow-on 11 overs after lunch, although by then he and Jones were batting so securely that Lancastrian goals were becoming more ambitious.Once the score reached 178, a brisk rate of scoring was added to simple crease occupation. Both Jones and Bailey looked to chip away at Middlesex’s lead and it came as a surprise when Finn had Bailey caught at slip before inflicting the same fate on Kyle Jarvis next ball. That threw Jones’s century into doubt but, on 94, the 20-year-old cast such doubts to the four winds in gloriously assertive fashion by whacking Rayner over long on. He had opted not to reach his goal in ones and twos.Jones’s haste was understandable. He had just lost Bailey and Jarvis and a few overs later he watched as Simon Kerrigan and Toby Lester fell in successive overs to Finn and Rayner. This left him as the youngest Lancastrian to carry his bat since Cyril Washbrook managed the feat against Worcestershire in 1935 – and on that occasion, Washbrook made just 49. But batting through an innings is all the sweeter when you have three figures against your name and Jones milked the moment for all it was worth. He watched as the ball cleared the fielder and then brandished his bat about six times. This is a cricketer who is so proud to represent his county that he walks round the dressing room wearing his Lancashire cap. It showed.Middlesex’s cricketers also showed what sort of people they are when Jones reached his century. A few minutes before that six Finn told him that he hoped he got to three figures because he deserved to do so; then when the brouhaha had died down, Rayner and his colleagues congratulated him. And all this respect was shown to a batsman whose innings may have denied Middlesex the Championship. This is still a lovely game. All the same, Middlesex’s frustrations on this last day were expressed in their batting during the evening session. Nick Gubbins edged Jarvis to Livingstone without scoring before Sam Robson, Nick Compton and Stevie Eskinazi all fell leg before to Kerrigan in the space of ten overs. If Middlesex are to win this title, they may need to regroup quickly.

Chelsea Could Sign £67k-p/w Ace "Next Week"

Chelsea have had a bid for Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana rejected, but could still seal his signing "next week", according to a fresh transfer claim regarding his future.

Have Chelsea been linked with Onana?

The Blues will be looking to sign a new 'keeper during the summer transfer window, with neither Kepa Arrizabalaga nor Edouard Mendy looking like the long-term solution between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.

While both have certainly had good moments in a Blues shirt down the years, neither consistently impressed during the 2022/23 campaign as they played their parts in the west Londoners' huge struggles in the Premier League.

One player who has been strongly linked with making a move to Chelsea this summer is Onana, who has caught the eye for Inter throughout the season. The £67,000-a-week stopper has played a key role in his side reaching the Champions League final against Manchester City, starting all 12 prior matches in the competition in the process.

Despite this, he has been made expendable by Inter this summer and is expected to leave, handing the Blues the opportunity to snap him up.

What's the latest on Onana to Chelsea?

According to Tuttomercatoweb [via Sport Witness], Chelsea have had a €40m (£34.2m) bid for Onana rejected by Inter, with work set to be done "next week" in order for a deal to be agreed that suits everyone involved.

A move to the Premier League is thought to appeal to the 27-year-old, but the Blues will likely have to table a better offer to get their man.

Onana could be a clear upgrade on both Kepa and Mendy heading into next season – immediately making Chelsea a stronger defensive outfit – as Mauricio Pochettino looks to come in and make his mark immediately as manager.

The Inter hero is now a very experienced player in his position, racking up 34 caps for Cameroon and also making a combined 254 appearances for Inter and Ajax heading into this weekend's Champions League final. Meanwhile, at 27, he is still young for a goalkeeper, so there is no reason why he couldn't come in and be the Blues' No 1 for years to come.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has hailed Onana as both "exceptional" and "one of the best in the world" in his position, further outlining why he could be such an influential signing for Chelsea before the 2023/24 season gets underway.

India Women’s opener Smriti Mandhana has signed a one-year deal with Brisbane Heat for the second edition of the Women’s Big Bash League, the franchise announced on Tuesday. Mandhana became the second India Women’s player to sign for the BBL, after Harmanpreet Kaur, the vice-captain, signed a contract with defending champions Sydney Thunder. Mandhana will join Deandra Dottin, the West Indies vice-captain, as Heat’s second international recruit for the season.ESPNcricinfo understands the signing had been in the works for over a month now, with the formal announcement coming following BCCI’s no-objection certificate.”I am looking forward very much to working with the Australian girls in the Heat squad after playing against them last season,” Mandhana told Cricket Australia. “That was a good series, and I noticed there was a definite difference between their preparation and our preparation so I am keen to learn from the differences.”Things like fitness and how they train for a series like the WBBL and the way they work on their fielding are areas I am interested in. It will be exciting to live in a different city and meet new people as well as travel around Australia again.”Heat coach Andy Richards said Mandhana was high on their wish list following strong words of recommendation from a number of Australia Women players, who featured in the ODI in Hobart earlier this year where Mandhana struck her maiden international century. She followed that up with scores of 55, 55 and 46 in her next three ODIs.”When the opportunity came about that some of the Indian players were going to be available for the WBBL, the Brisbane girls were onto us straight away about Smriti,” Richards said. “It’s going to be an enjoyable experience for all of us as a squad, with her and Deandra joining us. I think it’s going to make the second season of the WBBL even more exciting.”Mandhana came to international limelight in 2014 when she made a half-century in India’s historic Test win over England in Wormsley. She also played a key role in India’s maiden series triumph against Australia earlier this year, when she struck 29 and 22 not out in the team’s T20I series win.

Players chase share of new revenue streams

Players will be chasing a slice of Cricket Australia’s digital revenue, arguing the content could not exist without them, when negotiations for a new payment memorandum of understanding (MOU) formally begin in Melbourne on Friday

Players will be chasing a slice of Cricket Australia’s digital revenue, arguing the content could not exist without them, when negotiations for a new payment memorandum of understanding (MOU) formally begin in Melbourne on Friday.Ahead of talks that are set to be among the most willing since the threat of a player strike, in 1997, led to the creation of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, ESPNcricinfo has learned that the players union will be seeking a more expansive definition of Australian Cricket Revenue (ACR), the pool of money from which the players’ fixed revenue percentage of around 25% is drawn. The last MOU, negotiated in 2012, predated CA’s current broadcast rights deals, which included a substantial digital component for the first time. Lavish funds have been spent on the project, including the CA website, a subscription-based mobile app and extensive live streaming services. Yet the players, whose cricket the project covers, only have access to the money brought in by television deals, not their digital equivalents. While the players have been happy to help the project get off the ground over the past three summers, there is an eagerness now to “future-proof” the next MOU so new sources of revenue are not excluded from ACR. Though the cricketers’ pay model is the envy of the Australian sporting world, the ACA argues that the players actually get less than a fifth of all money in the game, termed Total Cricket Revenue. There has already been some furious spin on both sides of the argument, which will be led on the players’ side by the ACA chief executive Alistair Nicholson and on CA’s by the senior executive and former board director Kevin Roberts. While CA has said little about the looming talks, even to the point of refusing to guarantee the retention of the fixed revenue percentage model, Nicholson moved onto the front foot on Thursday.”It’s important that the facts are known because they paint a very different picture to that suggested,” Nicholson said. “Most think that the players are getting a bigger and bigger slice of the cricket pie. This is wrong. The opposite is actually true. And this is despite the fact that it is the players who have helped grow the game to make it what it is.”For the last 20 years, Cricket Australia and the players have worked together as genuine partners in the growth of the game, and the game in Australia has never been stronger. To suggest that players try harder or perform better due to the size of their contracts is not only wrong, but doesn’t respect the work that the players put in.”In reality, the players know more than anyone that they need to continue to fight to be the best in world cricket, and every time they pull on the Australian cap, they do so with immense pride and respect. The players have outlined their priorities including ongoing investment in grassroots cricket and a greater say on scheduling. This, along with including all cricketers, male and female in the one MOU, provides cricket with a fantastic opportunity to grow in the right way.”

Door Opens For Celtic To Hire ‘Genius’ New Manager

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to replace Ange Postecoglou ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…

What's the latest on Brendan Rodgers to Celtic?

According to the Daily Record, former Hoops head coach Brendan Rodgers has not ruled out a sensational return to Parkhead this summer.

The report claims that the Northern Irishman is one of the top contenders to take over as majority shareholder Dermot Desmond is a 'huge admirer' of the tactician.

It states that Rodgers will not rule anything out after he left Leicester prior to their relegation from the Premier League earlier this year, which leaves the club with hope that they can get a deal done in the coming weeks.

Which Celtic player would thrive under Brendan Rodgers?

Desmond bringing the ex-Liverpool boss back to Paradise could be a dream come true for current Hoops forward Liel Abada as the 50-year-old would be perfect for him.

The manager typically deploys a 4-2-3-1 system and enjoyed great success with James Forrest during his previous spell with Celtic as a right winger.

Celtic forward Liel Abada.

Forrest, who only played 16 league games in 22/23 under Postecoglou, produced an impressive 38 goals and 41 assists in 148 matches in all competitions under Rodgers, including 22 goals and 23 assists in 82 outings in the Scottish Premiership.

The Northern Irish coach departed for Leicester in 2019 and since then, the Scottish winger has only plundered 14 goals and eight assists in 72 matches across all competitions, which shows that his production has diminished under the subsequent managers.

This proves that Rodgers, who was once lauded as a "genius" by journalist Sid Lowe, was able to get the best out of the electric right-winger and he could do the same with Abada, who plays a similar position.

The Israel international, like Forrest, is a right-footed forward who plays on his strong foot and is capable of producing goals and assists on a regular basis.

He racked up ten goals and created ten 'big chances' in 34 Premiership appearances in 22/23, despite only starting 13 times, with that coming after the whiz scored ten and produced 13 'big chances' in 24 starts and 36 outings in the previous campaign in the division.

These statistics suggest that Abada, who has played the vast majority of the games in his career as a right winger, would slot in perfectly for Rodgers on the right in his 4-2-3-1 system in the same way that Forrest did.

He would be able to stay high and push forward to score and create goals week-in-week-out as a regular starter which could lead to his numbers rocketing, as the Isreal ace would be playing more than Postecoglou allowed him to.
