Real have revealed their squad list and the official numbers that they will wear at the Club World Cup, with Alexander-Arnold forced to leave his iconic Liverpool shirt number, No.66, behind. Instead, the right-back is set to wear the No.12 shirt, as every player in La Liga must have a shirt number between one and 25.

The No.12 shirt was previously made famous by Marcelo, the Brazilian left-back who won the Champions League five times with Los Blancos, and was most recently worn by Eduardo Camavinga. Alexander-Arnold wore the 66 from when he was a youth player, and never chose to update it at Anfield. Now, he appears to have added the numbers together, although it is subject to change later in pre-season.

England named unchanged XI for Oval Ashes finale

James Anderson to play amid speculation about future after low-key returns so far

Matt Roller26-Jul-2023England have named an unchanged team for the fifth and final men’s Ashes Test at The Kia Oval, which starts on Thursday, with veteran seamers James Anderson and Stuart Broad both retaining their places. The final day of the drawn fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford was wiped out by the Manchester rain, effectively giving England’s bowlers an extra day to recover. “Everyone’s pulled up well,” Ben Stokes, their captain, said. “Everyone is fit from the last game.”It’s been a tough four games. One little, tiny positive we could maybe take from the rain is that the bowlers got a bit more rest. It’s a strange one to look at from that point of view. But with the quick turnaround and the game we have here, knowing what we need to do, you could see that as a tiny, tiny little positive – although it’s very hard to say it’s a positive.”Anderson turns 41 on the fourth day of the fifth Test but said in his newspaper column this week that he has had “no thoughts about retirement”. Stokes was unequivocal when asked about Anderson’s future in the England team: “He’s quality, man. It’s very hard for you guys to sit here and say he’s not.”Although he’s not had the impact or the wickets he would have liked to in this series, he’s a quality bowler and quality performer. Jimmy’s come under a bit of flack for that but if Joe [Root] hadn’t scored the runs he would have liked, you wouldn’t be questioning him staying in the team as a batter.”James Anderson is the greatest fast bowler to play the game and he’s still looking as good as he was two years ago, although he hasn’t had the impact that he would have liked in this series.”Related

Broad’s retention means that he will be the only England seamer to play all five Ashes Tests at the age of 37. “It was always going to be hard for one bowler to play every game this series but he’s been incredible for us,” Stokes said.”He’s put in some incredible performances throughout the Test matches, but also been very good at coming on with the ball and changing the game numerous times, which is something he’s done throughout his whole career.”He’s the leading wicket-taker and it’s very hard to look past someone like that. At 37 years old that’s testament to how much work he puts in off the field to keep turning out for England on the field.”Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have also been declared fit and will play their third consecutive Tests, having come into the side for England’s win at Headingley.Stokes felt “pretty flat” at the end of the fourth Test•Getty ImagesStokes admitted to feeling “pretty flat” after the washout in Manchester. “I’ve never left a field, a game, pretty emotionless,” he said. “It was a bizarre feeling. The game petered out the way it did because of the weather. You look back and think, ‘Do you wish we’d got beat?’ or we had played and Australia pulled a draw off.”We leave the ground when you can’t do anything. It’s a strange place to be. It makes you feel very odd. Shaking hands at the end, you could feel it from both sides, emotionless. Australia retained the Ashes, we couldn’t win it back but it was very bizarre… it was a pretty flat feeling but we’ve got rid of those emotions and we’re ready for this week.”But he believes England will have to “start all over again” at The Oval, despite their dominance at Old Trafford. “It’s a new game and things can play out differently,” Stokes said. “We just need to go out there and put the same amount of pressure onto Australia as we’ve been trying to throughout this series.”I thought the way we did that at Old Trafford, Australia didn’t have an answer, particularly when we had the bat in hand. It was great viewing, watching the lads go about their business with the bat. But [it’s the] same old things: completely different game, and we’ll just have to start all over again.”

Jubilant Netherlands secure ODI World Cup ticket

Team chases down 278 inside 43 overs to overhaul Scotland’s net run rate

Danyal Rasool06-Jul-2023Netherlands have qualified for the ODI World Cup in India later this year after beating Scotland in Bulawayo by six wickets. They sealed qualification with a stunning win spearheaded by Bas de Leede, who smashed 123 off 92 balls, to take the team to the 50-over World Cup for the first time since 2011.It seemed an uphill task for the Netherlands, who needed to win by a comprehensive enough margin to overhaul Scotland’s superior net run rate. Scotland were inserted into bat and scored 277 thanks to a century by Brandon McMullen, leaving the Dutch requiring 278 in 44 overs to qualify.Related

While Scott Edwards’ side appeared on track for victory through the chase, reaching the target within that threshold looked unlikely. However, needing 45 off the last four overs, talisman de Leede, instrumental to the chase, shot through the gears in an astonishing onslaught, smashing four of the five sixes that Netherlands hit off the next two overs. Those overs saw 42 runs scored, and all of a sudden, the qualification that looked a distant dream was suddenly a foregone conclusion. De Leede was run out just before the winning runs were hit, but the Netherlands got home with seven balls to spare. That means Netherlands and Sri Lanka will go through to the final of the Qualifier, as well as to the World Cup proper. Regardless of the result in the final, the Netherlands go through as Q1, and Sri Lanka as Q2. The Netherlands are the only Associate side to qualify for the World Cup since the tournament shrunk to include just 10 teams. The final will be played on Sunday in Harare.

Ball change had 'a significant bearing' on Oval result, says McDonald

“I’ve never seen tactics shift so dramatically on the back of a decision,” Australia coach says, but admits that his batters “should have been able to navigate that”

Andrew McGlashan02-Aug-20231:43

McGlashan: Bazball puts oppositions under such pressure

The ball change which took place during Australia’s second innings at The Oval continues be a significant talking point, with Australia head coach Andrew McDonald saying he had never seen a replacement ball have such an impact on a game. When Usman Khawaja was struck on the helmet by a short delivery from Mark Wood in the 37th over of Australia’s chase, umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Joel Wilson ruled that the ball had been damaged enough to warrant being replaced. The ball that was chosen looked considerably newer (England had been trying to get the previous one to reverse swing) and, after play had been curtailed on Sunday by rain, provided the quicks with considerable assistance on the final day.Khawaja and David Warner were both removed by Chris Woakes after an opening stand of 140 while Wood claimed Marnus Labuschagne. However, Steven Smith and Travis Head got Australia down to needing 120 with seven wickets in hand when the defining collapse occurred after a two-hour rain delay.Related

Australia go home with the mace and the urn, but no gold star

“I’ve never seen tactics shift so dramatically on the back of a decision,” McDonald said. “Went from catchers in front of the wicket to behind the wicket, and there’s no doubt in some ways changed the shape of the game and the tactics within the game.”So I will say that ball change did have a significant bearing on the tactics, the way that England went about it. But in saying that, I think we still should have been able to navigate that.”There were two clumps where we lost 3 for 30 and 5 for 50, and that’s part of us owning it. The umpires are out there to make a decision and they had a box of balls to choose from, and they made the best decision at that time from what they saw was there.”It ultimately meant that Australia had to settle for a 2-2 Ashes scoreline for the second time in four years, which allowed them to retain the urn but left them short of the ultimate ambition of a first series win in England since 2001.”We didn’t quite achieve what we set out to achieve,” McDonald admitted. “We clearly wanted to come here and win the Ashes but the cricket we played, the cricket both teams played was fascinating.”I think the whole series was fascinating. People should be proud of what they’ve been able to achieve, even if we didn’t quite get to where we wanted to in winning the Ashes.”McDonald stood by the team’s preparation and planning for a tour that included six Tests overall, including the World Test Championship final where Australia claimed the title with victory over India.”There’s no doubt in some ways [the new ball] changed the shape of the game and the tactics within the game”•AFP/Getty ImagesThere was some rotation among the quick bowlers with Josh Hazlewood held back for the Ashes – where he played four games out of five and sat out at Headingley – but captain Pat Cummins was part of all six and Mitchell Starc, who was named Australia’s Player of the Series against England, appeared in five.Australia had a great chance to close out the series at Headingley when England were still significantly behind at lunch on the second day with only three wickets in hand. But England fought back, won that game by three wickets, then dominated at Old Trafford before two days of rain. The Oval Test was closely fought, but missed chances in the field by Australia and the lack of a sizeable first-innings lead was another opportunity squandered.”We felt as though we were as fresh as what we could be,” McDonald said. “The mental and physical toll of this tour, before we got here, what we were in for. And to have guys still running in and still hitting top speed late in the series I think was a true reflection we got that side of it right. And I wouldn’t say that we dropped off.”The Manchester [Test], we owned that result but Leeds and [The Oval] I think everyone was in the game and both teams had their chances, and we had a really good look at winning this series.”And that’s probably the part when we sit back and reflect, once we let it all settle down and go back through it, there was definitely some opportunities for us to win. And I think England can equally say the same. As it settles, two-all seems about right, and I think everyone’s said that.”

Babar hints that Naseem may miss start of World Cup

There is more confidence over Haris Rauf’s recovery after Pakistan’s Asia Cup campaign was hit by injuries

‘Pakistan lack in batting intent and quality spinner’ – Urooj Mumtaz

Babar Azam has raised the possibility that Naseem Shah may not recover in time to take part in Pakistan’s opening games at the World Cup in India. While the PCB has not made public any timeline for Naseem’s recovery from a right shoulder injury, Babar appeared unsure as to whether Naseem would be fit for from the outset of the tournament next month. There is more confidence that Haris Rauf, who is nursing a side issue, will be fit for the start of the World Cup; Pakistan did not even officially rule him out of the Asia Cup or formally induct his replacement, Shahnawaz Dahani, into the squad. Speaking post-match after Pakistan’s last-ball defeat and elimination from the Asia Cup at Sri Lanka’s hands, Babar was similarly confident about Rauf’s chances, while seeming to equivocate over Naseem’s full World Cup availability. When asked what plans Pakistan had should Naseem and Rauf miss out, Babar was coy about back-up plans but did expand on the prospects of both.”I’ll tell you later,” he said. “Not telling you our Plan B now. But yes, Haris Rauf is not bad. He’s just got a little bit of a side strain, but he’s recovering before the World Cup. Naseem Shah also… they have a couple of miss matches, I don’t know [how long] the recovery [is], but in my opinion, Naseem Shah also [will be] in the World Cup later on. But let’s see.”The PCB has not yet detailed how severe the nature of Naseem’s injury is. He is currently in Dubai undergoing scans for the muscle injury below his right shoulder, one he appeared to sustain while bowling at the death against India on Monday. He went off in the middle of the over and was ruled out of the tournament soon after. Rauf didn’t bowl that day either, with the issue in his side keeping him out, and Pakistan rested him out of an abundance of caution with the World Cup fast approaching.Naseem, 20, has had injury issues in the early stages of his career. A back injury he sustained one year into his international career when he was 17 years old kept him out of cricket for 14 months. Six weeks after his return, he was sidelined for a month with a shoulder injury he suffered on his debut in the County Championship with Gloucestershire. In the 18 months since, his workload has increased significantly. While only a red-ball player at the time, Naseem has become a crucial bowler for Pakistan across all three formats. He is their most potent bowler since making his ODI debut, with 32 wickets in 14 matches at under 17.In the absence of the two fast bowlers, Pakistan played Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Zaman Khan in their must-win game against Sri Lanka. Wicket-taking proved a problem for much of Sri Lanka’s chase, with neither able to make an impression, their combined nine overs going for 64 runs as Sri Lanka sneaked home at the death.Pakistan’s squad will return home from Sri Lanka on Friday via Dubai.

Gyokeres has been granted permission to join Sporting's pre-season camp a week late, according to . The Swedish international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League and the decision comes after reports he was prepared to go on strike to force through a transfer.

While this does not necessarily indicate that Gyokeres is any closer to a move, it does give both club and player more time to resolve the situation surrounding the 27-year-old's future. Sporting want a reported £68 million ($92m) for their top scorer, which goes against a reported 'gentleman's agreement' that he can leave for less. This agreement was denied by club president Frederico Varandas, leaving Gyokeres furious.

Portuguese publication claims that the reason for Gyokeres' delayed arrival to the pre-season camp, which begins on July 1, is his involvement with the Swedish national team earlier this month. But he in fact dropped out of Jon Dahl Tomasson's squad for a minor fitness issue and it has not been confirmed whether this was the reason for Sporting's decision.

It is in the best interests of both player and club for this saga to be resolved soon. It is evident that Gyokeres wants to move on, but the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool may be unwilling to meet Sporting's asking price. The 27-year-old is likely to be at his peak value this summer, so it remains to be seen whether player or club are to soften their stance as the situation develops.

The Red Devils couldn't muster up any sort of consistency and failed to win eight of their last nine Premier League matches of the campaign. The Portuguese coach also came under intense scrutiny after his side were beaten by Tottenham in the Europa League final, denying them any sort of continental football for the upcoming term.

Big changes are needed at United if they are to thrive in Amorim's first full campaign at Old Trafford. Defender Martinez was a big miss after rupturing his cruciate ligament in February but the Argentina international has seen enough from his new boss to believe brighter times are ahead.

WHAT MARTINEZ SAID

Martinez told : "The club is obviously going through a process of change. Since Six Alex Ferguson's departure, they haven't found a manager who hits the right note. Ten Hag did a remarkable job at Ajax, which is why he went to United, and thanks to him, I joined the club as well.

"It's like everything in life: you take a gamble, and sometimes it works out well, sometimes it doesn't. I think that, like any club, if something isn't working, it needs to be changed. It's necessary to analyse what's working and what isn't and make changes accordingly because that's how great clubs operate. Manchester is one of the best clubs in the world.

"Now Ruben Amorim has arrived with very good energy and willingness. I believe he will make the necessary changes. Without a doubt change is needed, because where we ended up in the table over the last two seasons is unacceptable."
