Yorkshire defy the rain as Dawid Malan, Harry Brook fifties see them home over Durham

Malan’s 73 and Brook’s unbeaten 66 secure six-wicket victory after delayed start to final day

Paul Edwards at Chester-le-Street04-Aug-2020
As if to remind us of something else we had missed during four blank months, it rained at the Riverside this morning. Gently at first, the drizzle scarcely compelling the use of windscreen wipers on the 21 bus to Durham, but soon with such severity that the whole square was covered and an early lunch announced. In their dressing room Yorkshire’s cricketers worried, without need as it turned out, whether they would get a chance to score the 68 runs needed for victory, while Durham’s toyed with the notion they might escape with eight points for the draw. Over at the indoor school the county’s Cricket Board held its first summer camp and cars carrying keen young players queued outside the ground at breakfast time. So much, so admirable, so normal. But these are abnormal times and not even the cherished scaffolding of first-class cricket has convinced anyone otherwise. On Monday afternoon Alex Lees made a six-hour century and Matthew Fisher changed the game in four memorable overs. Yet the cricketers were playing in a one-off competition, watched by no spectators and with their lives so wreathed in protocols that Yorkshire’s players have been forbidden to leave their hotel and must drive to grounds singly. Elsewhere in England policies are being contemplated that will affect the livelihoods of millions. Perhaps it was valuable to focus narrowly on the skills of Lees and Fisher; to think about what we can see rather than worrying about invisible threats. But when play got under way at 1.45 the threats to Durham’s bowlers were all too clear. They were apparent in the batting of Dawid Malan, who made 73, and even more so in the cultured hitting of Harry Brook, who finished the game with successive straight sixes off Gareth Harte. And those maximums were only two of four sixes Brook struck during a 50-minute session which was curiously alien to the general tempo of the previous three days’ cricket. He and Malan clearly had little inclination to hang around on a chilly afternoon at the Riverside and the consequence of this resolve was that Yorkshire scored 64 runs in 10.4 overs, Lees’ one over costing 12 runs and Harte’s four deliveries being tanked for 17.Durham did take one wicket during all this mayhem but Lees’ removal of Malan, caught at long-on by Sean Dixon, was only of much interest to collectors of bizarre trivia. The very occasional spinner, though he barely merits that noun, has taken only three first-class wickets but has twice dismissed Malan. On the first occasion Lees was playing for Yorkshire and was trying to give Middlesex runs during the famous championship decider at Lord’s in 2016; this afternoon Malan had whacked Lees for a six and a four before he perished when attempting another mighty heave.Brook’s batting in those final overs had rather less of the Barley Mow about it. He began with a cultured back-foot four off Ben Raine and then hooked Chris Rushworth into the grey metallic splendour of the stand sponsored by Newcastle Airport. When Paul Coughlin also dug it in Brook adjusted his position adroitly in order to pull a straighter delivery slightly backward of square for a second six. Quite regardless of the end-of-term atmosphere then prevailing, this was high-quality demolition and Brook’s unbeaten 66 off 90 deliveries was the final highlight of a match that has rewarded attentive study. The first ball hooked for six was lost. The second was recovered although umpire Graham Lloyd insisted on it being sanitised before Rushworth was allowed to touch it again. The players took advantage of this delay to have a general cleansing of hands. These interruptions have already been labelled sanity breaks by club cricketers and one sees their point.

Nicolas Jackson admits he 'wasn't very happy' with maiden Chelsea season as striker signs two-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge

Nicolas Jackson has revealed he was not very happy with his first season at Chelsea after signing a two-year contract extension with the Blues.

Jackson pens contract extensionScored 17 goals in debut seasonWants more in new campaignWHAT HAPPENED?

Jackson has committed his future to Chelsea by penning a two-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge that now runs until 2033. The striker moved to the Premier League club in 2023 from La Liga side Villarreal and went on to score 17 goals in his first campaign in west London. It's a decent return by the 23-year-old, but he says he was not completely happy with his first season in English football.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT JACKSON SAID

He told Chelsea's website: "The first season for any player or any striker that comes to Chelsea is not easy, but I did okay. I am not happy with 17 goals because I played the whole season without injuries, but it’s okay. I did good, now I hope to continue and do amazing. I am still in the learning process, learning every day, and trying to improve what I can do, and work on what I cannot do. It was not hard to adapt to the club because I could speak English and I’m a social person. It was easy to talk to everybody and get to know people. The only problem was the weather, but I got used to it! On the pitch I’m friends with everybody. It will always be like that. I hope this year together we will do more than last year and win something."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea will be hoping for more goals from Jackson this season, and he has started the current campaign well. The Senegal international has two goals and an assist in the club's first three Premier League games under new coach Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea are back in action after the international break on Saturday against a Bournemouth side who are yet to taste defeat so far in the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Celtic eyeing "exceptional" signing to replace hero who started 48 games

Celtic ended their 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign in style on Saturday as they came from behind to beat St Mirren 3-2 at Parkhead on the final day.

The Hoops were then able to lift the top-flight trophy, which they secured with a thumping 5-0 win over Kilmarnock earlier in the week, after the match.

However, the season is not done and dusted yet as the Scottish giants have an SFA Cup final clash with their closest rivals at Hampden Park this weekend.

Brendan Rodgers has the opportunity to win two trophies in his first year back at Paradise and will have his focus on that match, before he can start to think about the upcoming summer transfer window.

One player who will need to be replaced ahead of the 2024/25 campaign is veteran goalkeeper Joe Hart, who is set to retire from football upon the expiry of his contract at Parkhead this summer.

Joe Hart

His pending retirement means that Celtic will need to be in the market for a new number one to play between the sticks in Glasgow next term, and they reportedly have their eye on a player who has just been relegated from the Premier League.

Celtic's interest in Burnley star

According to The Scottish Sun, the Hoops are considering a swoop to sign Burnley shot-stopper Arijanet Muric to bolster their options in goal in the window.

The report claims that Rodgers wants to sign a new first-choice, rather than bringing through a current player to replace Hart, and that the Clarets star has emerged as an option for the club.

However, it does not state how much it would take to snap him up from the soon-to-be-Championship side, who have just been relegated from the English top-flight.

The Scottish Sun also do not reveal whether or not the Kosovo international would be interested in ditching English football to be the number one in Glasgow.

This means that it remains to be seen whether the Hoops can convince him to join up with Rodgers' squad to take over from Hart ahead of next season.

The outlet did, however, add that Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin and Southampton's Alex McCarthy had also been linked with possible moves to Parkhead, which shows that Muric is not the only goalkeeper on the club's radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

If Celtic can land a deal to sign the Burnley colossus, though, then they could secure an exceptional replacement for Hart, who has been a regular starter throughout the current campaign.

Joe Hart's last season at Celtic in numbers

The former England international, who was signed from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2021, has been the undisputed first-choice for Rodgers this term.

He has racked up 48 appearances in all competitions, with a 49th to come against Rangers at Hampden Park on Saturday, and played over 4000 minutes in total.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The 37-year-old titan started all six of the club's matches in the group stages of the Champions League and failed to step up to the mark in that competition.

Hart ranks within the bottom 1% of goalkeepers in the Men's Big 5 Leagues and European competitions over the last 365 days for percentage of crosses stopped (1.2%) and defensive actions outside of his penalty area per 90 (0.17), which shows how little he commanded his box in Europe.

He also ranks within the bottom 8% for post-shot xG minus goals allowed per 90 (-0.28), which essentially means that the veteran goalkeeper let in too many poor quality efforts on his goal.

As you can see in the table above, Hart did enjoy a successful season in the Premiership, though, as he only conceded 29 times in 37 appearances in total.

The former Manchester City star ended his final league campaign with 14 clean sheets to his name and, hopefully, supporters will remember that, rather than his struggles in the Champions League earlier in the season.

His poor form in Europe does, however, suggest that there is scope for the Hoops to land an upgrade on him this summer, and that is exactly what Muric could be, based on his form for Burnley.

Why Ari Muric could be an upgrade on Joe Hart

Rodgers could land an exceptional signing to replace Hart by landing the Clarets star, as the £25k-per-week titan is a dominant goalkeeper who is also a fantastic shot-stopper.

Over the last 365 days in the Men's Big 5 Leagues and European competitions, Muric ranks within the top 1% of goalkeepers for percentage of crosses stopped (14%), defensive actions outside of his penalty area (3.10), and average distance of his defensive actions (17.2 yards) respectively.

These statistics show that the Burnley giant has been one of the most commanding goalkeepers in Europe over the last year, as he is sublime at coming off his line to clear danger and coming out to collect crosses to alleviate pressure on his defence.

Muric, who journalist Josh Bunting hailed as "exceptional" with his distribution, has also caught the eye with his shot-stopping quality in the top-flight.

As you can see in the table above, the Kosovo international has prevented 0.66 xG per 90 in the Premier League, whereas Hart let in 0.28 more than expected per 90 in the Champions League.

In just ten top-flight appearances for Burnley, Muric prevented a staggering 6.09 xG with his sensational shot-stopping. This meant that he ended the season with the second-best xG prevented tally in the division, second only to Wolves star Jose Sa's 8.45 prevented.

These statistics suggest that Celtic could land a major upgrade on Hart by completing a swoop to sign Vincent Kompany's number one, due to both his shot-stopping ability and his impressively dominant and front-footed command of his box.

Pundit thrilled by £85 million Richarlison replacement Tottenham could sign

A pundit has been left thrilled by an "interesting Richarlison replacement" who Tottenham Hotspur are targeting for manager Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Postecoglou says Spurs need to sign new attackers

Timo Werner is expected to stay at Tottenham for another year on loan from RB Leipzig, but Spurs are reportedly open to selling the likes of Bryan Gil, Manor Solomon and Richarlison when the transfer window reopens on June 14.

The aforementioned trio are not the only players who chairman Daniel Levy could opt to let go either, as reliable insider Paul O'Keefe stated earlier this month that Spurs are open to offers for over a dozen members of Postecoglou's squad.

Fabrizio Romano has also predicted a very active summer transfer window for the north Londoners, even claiming they could make as many as five major signings this summer, as they look to back Postecoglou following a positive debut campaign for the Australian as head coach.

“They’re looking at different options as a centre striker or as a winger," said Romano last week.

"I expect Tottenham to be really busy. I don’t want to throw out like six or seven names, but they are considering several players and several positions. I see Tottenham being really busy, I think it could be four or five signings this summer for Spurs.”

Postecoglou has been forthright in his desire to upgrade the squad, and recently stated that Tottenham need to sign new attackers this summer given the plethora of injuries they suffered in that area last term.

"Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area," said Postecoglou on the need for new attackers.

"We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

Tottenham are thought to be looking at signing a number of strikers, and one of them is RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.

The £85 million Belgian, who scored 24 goals and bagged seven assists in the Bundesliga alone last season, is on Spurs' transfer shortlist as they decide which striker to move for (Paul O'Keefe).

Speaking to Tottenham News, pundit John Wenham has praised Openda as Spurs target his potential signing – explaining why he'd be an excellent addition.

“I watched Openda in the Champions League a couple of times this year and I was impressed,” Wenham said.

“He has a real mix of pace and excellent finishing ability. He looks like someone who could also play out wide, so he would be an interesting replacement for Richarlison."

Reports in Spain this week claimed that Zubimendi was having some regrets over turning Liverpool down, with the Spain international said to be hoping for a renewed approach from the Premier League side in January.

However, Slot poured cold water on the links and admitted that, while the club could benefit from bringing in good players to help with rotation, the form of Ryan Gravenberch gave him no regrets over Zubimendi.

Gravenberch has featured in every minute in the Premier League for Liverpool this season, with Slot fielding the 22-year-old in the defensive midfielder spot that Zubimendi was expected to play.

Zubimendi, meanwhile, has seen Real Sociedad struggle to build on their sixth-placed finish last season, with the Basque side sitting 16th in La Liga.

WHAT SLOT SAID

Slot said: "If I could have bought [Zubimendi] then maybe I could have rotated a bit more and [the media] would be a lot more happy about it!

"But there is no point talking about Zubimendi any more because he stayed with Real Sociedad and we've moved on and we are really happy with Ryan.

"But a club like ours should always try to bring in good players who can help the team to win because it is going to be a long season and therefore you need a lot of good players."

Mel Jones: Need to be 'more strategically smart' about scheduling women's domestic competitions

CA hopes that the doubling up of WBBL and the Women’s T20 Challenge is a one-off scenario created by the pandemic

Andrew McGlashan27-Aug-20201:53

Alyssa Healy: South Africa’s T20 World Cup semi-final run part of WBBL’s success

The women’s game needs to ensure there is clear communication and a smarter approach to scheduling in the future to avoid clashes of domestic competitions such as the WBBL and the Women’s T20 Challenge, according to former Australia player and now CA board director Mel Jones.CA hopes that the doubling up of two major women’s domestic events which will occur in November is a one-off scenario created by the huge challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, but beyond that there will need to be clear planning both domestically and internationally amid “massive concerns” that the women’s game could be left behind in the resumption of sport. With the T20 Challenge overlapping with the WBBL it means that India players won’t be able to appear in Australia this year, just six months after they played a starring role at the T20 World Cup, and on the flip side the likes of Alyssa Healy, who has been very outspoken on the topic, will not be able to feature in Indian competition for the second year running following last year’s stand-off between CA and the BCCI.ALSO READ: Alyssa Healy: ‘There’s no need for domestic competitions to clash in the women’s game’ “Who’d have thought maybe five years ago that I’d be pulling my hair out that women’s domestic competitions are clashing and we can’t get players from around the world,” Jones said. “It’s a great space to be in. In some ways it has been a bit of a rush and everyone is so excited about what they can do that sometimes the communication has been missed a little bit.”But what it has done is open up a few more doors and say let’s be a little bit more strategically smart about the way we are running our domestic competitions so we can see a free flow of players around the world.””From my perspective I’m rapt in the sense the Challenge was still on and giving a pathway for young Indian players to come through because we want to see young Indian players get better and better because it makes world cricket better as well. For this once off it’s not ideal in the sense it clashes with the WBBL and we’d love to see the Indian players here but moving forward we’ll have the clear windows for our players to go there and their players to come here.”

“The reality is you have the whole IPL infrastructure in Dubai. Hopefully it’s a one-year anomaly given a lot has been disrupted this year. Going forward, [it would be] fantastic to have the likes of Harmanpreet play in the WBBL.”Nick Hockley, CA interim CEO

The natural split for the major women’s domestic events would be the WBBL in October-November, the T20 Challenge in April or May and the Hundred in England during their summer months. CA are committed to staging a full WBBL in October and November this year with the likelihood it will be in a single-state hub”Australia should be very proud of the WBBL as being the preeminent domestic league in the world,” Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia interim CEO said. “This year is an atypical year with everything going on. The reality is you have the whole IPL infrastructure in Dubai. Hopefully it’s a one-year anomaly given a lot has been disrupted this year. Going forward, [it would be] fantastic to have the likes of Harmanpreet play in the WBBL.”Alyssa Healy was a part of the Women’s T20 Challenge match in 2018•BCCITop-level international cricket is set to resume with England-West Indies in September followed by Australia-New Zealand a few days later. CA remains hopeful that India will still tour in mid-January for a one-day series while talks are ongoing with New Zealand Cricket for matches in the space created by the World Cup postponement.ALSO READ: Alyssa Healy: ‘Opportunity to play four big events in 2022 daunting but also exciting'”There is a massive concern, without a doubt,” Jones said about the impact of the pandemic. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a few chats with the ICC in the last week just about that. It’s not to say people don’t have it in the forefront of their minds. The fact they postponed next year’s World Cup was a huge blow to them.”They’re mindful of that, and they’re trying to figure out ways how we can be a little bit smarter and collectively work together to make things easier. It’s an issue across global sport but I think we’ve got enough cricket brains at the table to make sure we can at least take advantage of as many opportunities as we can the next 12 months.”The Under-19s is something we’ve been pushing for for many years. It will be critical for us, but it might be one that unfortunately for the moment will have to take a bit of a pause to work out where it fits in but also so the nations providing those teams can send teams.”Jones and Hockley were speaking around the release of Cricket Australia’s third Press For Progress report which documents their aspiration to become Australia’s leading sport for women and girls. On the back of the record-breaking T20 World Cup and the first standalone WBBL, Hockley said the 2019-2020 season was “undoubtedly the greatest year for the women’s elite game in Australia.”Among key outcomes in the report were that representation on boards reached 32% – the first time it has passed 30% – and more than 1,600 all-girls cricket teams have been created in the past three years, with women and girls representing 32% of all participation for the first time. The Australia team had also previously been named the country’s most loved sports team. However, the introduction to the report emphasised the challenges ahead: “The highs of the past year were quickly followed by significant lows as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic spread globally. This once-in-a-century event is being felt throughout our game…with all sports impacted to varying degree, we call on our peers to join Australian Cricket in publicly sharing their commitment to create better opportunities for women and girls in sport. Now is not the time to revert to ways of old.”

Report: Man Utd likely destination for £85m man if he leaves current club

Manchester United have been tipped to make an astonishing move this summer as they look to begin life under Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ownership with a bang.

Red Devils transfer news

Despite recent reports that there may only be shoestring budget at Old Trafford this summer for any manager following their eighth placed Premier League finish, finance expert Kieran Maguire has suggested that more may be available than the measly £35m claimed.

There is certainly the need for plenty of spending, but more importantly plenty of smart spending. The Red Devils are a shell of their former side and if they are aiming to catch the sides above them then savvy additions will be needed.

Michael Olise is one name that has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford amid reports that there is a £60m price tag on the head of the Crystal Palace man, who has scored three times in three starts when facing the Red Devils.

There is also the need to add fresh faces in defence, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both of out contract this summer, while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof will be down to the final 12 months in their respective deals and Lisandro Martinez saw injuries restrict him to just nine Premier League starts last campaign.

They have been strongly linked with a move for England youngster Jarrad Branthwaite, but Everton are thought to be holding out for a fee in the region of £70m to sanction a deal, while the likes of Barcelona pair Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo have also both been mooted as options as well as young defender Dean Huijsen. Now, a new name has been thrown into the mix.

Report claims Man Utd most likely destination for Benfica star

That comes in the shape of Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva, who Manchester United have reportedly been scouting "almost every week".

Now fresh insight has been forthcoming via a report from Portugal, which claims that though PSG and Real Madrid have both previously shown interest in the 20-year-old defender, it is Manchester United who are "more likely" to "take a step ahead" when it comes to signing the centre-back this summer were he to leave Benfica.

Any deal wouldn't be cheap though; the defender has a release clause in his contract set at 100m euros (£85m) and though Benfica are not expecting that to be triggered, the report goes onto claim that the "expectation is to receive offers that get close to that" all-in, which could include some substantial performance bonuses.

As a result, a move seems unlikely given Manchester United's desire to sign Branthwaite unless a deal for the Everton man cannot be struck. Should that prove the case, Silva may be an excellent alternative for Ten Hag's side.

Flick benched four regular starters on Saturday evening for their away trip to El Sadar. Given the hectic footballing schedule this season, the German decided to rest the likes of Inigo Martinez, Alejandro Balde, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal with Barca Atletic's Sergi Dominguez and Gerard Martin coming into defence while Pau Victor and Ferran Torres went up front alongside Robert Lewandowski.

Within the first half hour, Barcelona realised the strength Osasuna possessed on the counter as goals from Ante Budimir and Bryan Zaragoza put the hosts 2-0 up. Pau Victor pulled one back for the visitors, however, Budimir was then on target before Abel Bretones gave Osasuna an unassailable lead despite Yamal scoring a late goal. Flick has now defended his decision to rotate this heavily but also shouldered the blame for the loss.

Speaking to the media, Flick said: "We have to accept this loss. We didn't play well. I take responsibility. It wasn't a good game. We made a lot of mistakes, we made a lot of rotations to the team and maybe that's one reason why, but they were necessary, there are a lot of games and a lot of minutes accumulated.

"I told the team that I am responsible. We have an important match on Tuesday and we're on the right track. After the international break, many players will return, we will have more to choose from. The many rotations are no excuse, but we had no other option. It's my responsibility to take care of the players, and some of them had played too many minutes. Their rest was necessary."
