Rangers: James Tavernier is right to lay out high European ambitions

“Minimum we have to be qualifying for the group stage and then I want us to set a target that we can go into the knockout stages.”

Those were the words of Rangers captain James Tavernier to the club’s official website following the Europa League qualifying draw, and after last year’s European disappointment, the Scottish side will be eager to go one step further.

After being knocked out in the group stages in the previous season, Steven Gerrard and his side should realistically be aiming for a round-of-32 finish at the minimum for the upcoming season, especially given the events of what happened last season that still keeps a bad taste in Rangers fans.

A tough draw with the likes of Villarreal and Spartak Moscow saw the Gers claim just one win in Group C of the Europa League, a 3-1 win over Rapid Vienna, leaving the club four points off progression to the knockout round after the dust had settled, but Tavernier’s comments could be an indication the club are ready to step up this year.

The right-back added: “I do believe you get the luck of the draw in the group stages, but I believe we have a good enough team to push ourselves into the knockout stages.”

With transfer speculation of Alfredo Morelos leaving cooling down rapidly and Rangers set to announce more signings soon via the Daily Record, there is a feeling in the air that the club can genuinely do one better than last year, and it would be a massive accomplishment for Scottish football.

Rangers fans, how far can the club go in the Europa League? Let us know!

Sheffield Wednesday: Quality over quantity for Steve Bruce

Sheffield Wednesday will head into the 2019/20 season buoyed by a positive finish to the season under Steve Bruce.

Hillsborough looked back to being something of a fortress under Bruce, and if the Owls can continue that form into the new campaign, then they might just surprise a few people and push on for a shot at promotion.

However, the summer is going to be key for Wednesday, who will be looking to add some quality to the squad following the release of several senior players such as Gary Hooper, George Boyd and Daniel Pudil.

Wednesday have had some quality players on the books in recent times and there have been periods where perhaps they should have been performing better than they have shown over the last 12 to 18 months.

One of the big problems for the Owls which Bruce will be looking to address is quality within the squad, rather than simply adding players for the sake of it who can often sit on big wages and occupy places in the squad to minimal effect.

We have seen this in S6 with the likes of Daniel Jones and Almen Abdi in recent times, both players who were brought in for big wages but offered little to the cause for the Owls in the end.

And it is this sort of player which Bruce will have taken note of no doubt, as he looks to use all his managerial experience to bring success to a Wednesday team which has been starved of any sort of joy for far too long now in the eyes of their passionate fans.

Wednesday have the tools to compete, and while the money might not be there as it was under Carlos Carvalhal a few seasons back, expect Steve Bruce to go out there and get value for money and real quality when it comes to his summer transfer dealings.

Wanyama set for talks over his Tottenham future

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Victor Wanyama is set for talks over his Tottenham Hotspur future as they close in on the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

The report claims that Spurs are in advanced talks with the France international as they look to reinforce a squad that reached the Champions League final and finished fourth in the Premier League.

However, such a deal could throw the Kenya international’s future into doubt, with Ndombele likely to occupy a central midfield position under Mauricio Pochettino.

And Football Insider claim that Wanyama will seek talks with his manager over his plans for the future.

Indeed, the likes of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier all appear to be ahead of Wanyama in the pecking order, even before the looming acquisition of Ndombele.

A shame

Wanyama is clearly a lieutenant of Pochettino, as he has been signed twice by the Argentine.

Indeed, he brought the midfielder to Southampton before again signing him at Spurs but it simply hasn’t worked out for him.

But, after a sensational debut season in north London, he has struggled with injury and has seen his playing time significantly reduced.

He made a total of four starts in the Premier League and he simply can’t be trusted to play for any length of time.

Pochettino warned of a “painful” rebuild this summer and shipping out the defensive midfielder may be a key part of that after all his injury woes.

Liverpool Transfer Roundup: Ceballos interest, Clarkson deal, Reds want to keep Lovren

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s Liverpool transfer roundup included news on a French winger, the departure of a youngster to Serie A and an update on the future of a Croatian defender. Today’s edition features interest in a Real Madrid midfielder, a new contract for a 17-year-old and a development in the Dejan Lovren saga.

Reds interested in Ceballos

According to Marca, Liverpool are interested in signing Real’s Dani Ceballos this summer. The club’s desire to bring the 22-year-old in has reportedly grown in recent weeks, and it is Jurgen Klopp himself who is backing the transfer.

Clarkson to sign professional contract

Liverpool youngster Leighton Clarkson has reportedly agreed terms on a three-year professional contract according to Football Insider. The paperwork has apparently been finalised in regards to the new deal for the 17-year-old midfielder.

Liverpool do not want to sell Lovren

Sky Sports is reporting that Liverpool are not looking to sell Dejan Lovren this summer. AC Milan are reportedly interested in a deal, but the Serie A outfit have not yet approached the Reds, and no price has been set for the former Lyon defender.

Tottenham linked with Martin Dubravka, fans react

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react after The Daily Mail reported that Spurs are interested in signing Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka.

The report states that clubs are looking to take advantage of the situation over at St James’ Park, where the Magpies are still manager-less after the departure of Rafa Benitez.

Before Tanguy Ndombele, Spurs fans haven’t been able to vlog about a transfer since January 2018! Judging by the video below, it’s been worth the wait…

Dubravka, 30, is said to be unsettled on Tyneside after the Spanish boss’ exit, and Spurs, Monaco, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Porto are looking to capitalise on the situation.

The 6 foot 3 glovesman is rated at £12m, and has impressed for the Magpies since arriving initially on loan from Sparta Prague in January 2018, before the deal was made permanent the following summer.

Spurs currently have Hugo Lloris, Paulo Gazzaniga and Alfie Whiteman as their three keepers for next season, although their first-choice stopper Lloris did have some wobbly moments at times last term – he redeemed himself with penalty saves from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sergio Aguero in crucial games towards the end of the campaign.

Let’s see what the Tottenham fans on Twitter have been saying about the Dubravka links…

Brighton: Interested in Inter defender Ryan Nolan

Brighton and Hove Albion are interested in an Inter Milan youngster this summer in preparation for the new season, according to Pundit Arena.

Ryan Nolan – an Ireland U18 international – is set to leave the club this summer and has a host of clubs from England and around Europe interested in his signature.

The 20-year-old centre-half was born in County Clare but moved to Murcia when he was just eight years old. After playing the majority of his youth football in Spain, he eventually moved to Inter in 2015 after being scouted in a tournament in Spain.

The youngster is yet to play competitively for the first-team, but featured on the bench for the club away at Rapid Vienna in the Europa League final 16. He has been playing U19 football for Inter and captains the side.

While the Irishman still has a year to go on his contract, a source close to the player allegedly revealed to Pundit Arena that he is looking for a move away from the club this summer as he looks to secure more football.

The report suggests that Brighton, Leicester, Leeds and Celtic are all showing interest in the defender.

It is perhaps not a surprise for Nolan to be searching for a new club, especially considering what he told Pundit Arena in January, and the fact he is now 20.

He said: “In Italy it’s very hard to get into first teams, there’s not that much of a chance unless you’re exceptional so I think especially at a big club like Inter you have to be top class.

“A lot of the lads decide go on loan to Serie B and Serie C which is the equivalent to the Championship or League One, for a year or two or whatever and they learn the trade down there with tough lads and hopefully do well, play well and come back to original team then in the future. It’s very hard to break straight into the first team directly.”

Considering that Nolan identifies that it is hard to break into the first team at Inter, and that he only has one-year left on his contract, it could make sense for his career to move to England.

However, without any first-team experience behind his back, it’s hard to tell what standard the footballer is at. It may be difficult to get into Inter’s team, but that doesn’t mean that he will get a lot further in the Premier League with Brighton, with the English top-tier having similar problems with getting youngsters from the academy into the first-team fold.

Within the first-team squad, Brighton have Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk, Dan Burn, Leon Balogun and new signing Matt Clarke – and it’s hard to imagine him leapfrogging any of those.

However, in England, there are good options available for a loan move, and he also will be under the eye of Ireland coaches more – who he admits he has struggled to attract due to the logistics of playing in Milan.

It could be a good move for Brighton, and with little risk involved.

Even though Nolan is highly unlikely to get into the first team for The Seagulls, the pros outweigh the cons in these circumstances. For example, with Nolan having less than a year remaining on his contract, he will be available at a very cheap price. If Nolan goes on loan to the Championship or League One and has a successful season, then he could either be brought back to be worked into the first team or has the potential to be sold on for a large profit. If he doesn’t succeed and nobody really wants him, then Brighton haven’t lost very much because his wages and transfer fee will be so low.

The player has already shown he is very adaptable after living in three different countries in Ireland, Spain and Italy – who’s to say he couldn’t blossom in England.

He admits that he has learnt skills that are very different due to his upbringing: in Spain he was taught to bring the ball out from the back – something which Potter might appreciate – and in Italy he learnt how to properly defend, especially from a tactical point of view.

Southampton fans in savage attack on Wesley Hoedt after poor defending

[ad_pod ]

Southampton’s pre-season preparations continued with a 3-1 win over Preston on Saturday as the Saints managed to secure a relatively routine victory.

However, it didn’t come without a slight scare when the hosts equalised. Billy Bodin managed to cut inside and via some poor defensive play scored a fine solo goal.

The defending left a lot to be desired with Wesley Hoedt appearing to be nut-megged and as a result of his weak showing, he took considerable flack on Twitter.

The 25-year-old was berated mercilessly as one fan urged for him to get out of the club immediately. A further supporter said he was stuck in cement. Another claimed the Dutchman didn’t even care.

Hoedt played 13 times for the Saints last season but ended up being loaned out to Celta Vigo in La Liga.

Throughout his time in Spain he played ten times, winning 3.2 aerial duels per game. It was a stat that improved upon the 2.5 he was successful with in the Premier League.

Judging by his defending against Preston, though, it doesn’t look like fans want him to stick around for much longer again.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Aston Villa could have perfect Dean Smith player if they sign Mattia Perin

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Juventus’ Mattia Perin this summer.

What’s the word?

Villa ramped up their preparations for the new season on Wednesday by confirming their ninth signing of the summer as they brought in Trezeguet from Kasimpasa before making it ten on Thursday with Douglas Luiz joining too.

It’s been an exceptionally busy market for the Villans who have also clearly been in the market for a goalkeeper.

Earlier in the window they had a bid rejected for Neil Etheridge and Tom Heaton whilst moves for stoppers like Alex McCarthy and Jack Butland have also been touted.

However, their latest target in that department appears to be Perin.

Di Marzio has laid down claims that Villa want to sign him and Juventus’ sporting director Fabio Paratici is in England to potentially discuss terms.

Perfect for Smith

In one particular manner, Perin would be perfect for Aston Villa and Dean Smith, especially if you take into account the way they played last term.

The Villans were one of the best passing teams in the division and kept possession excellently, maintaining an average of 53.4% throughout the campaign. In terms of their overall pass success, it was 79.8%.

That final statistic was one which put them third out of everyone in the Championship.

Therefore, if we focus on the £11.7m-rated ‘keeper, he’d be ideal.

In Serie A last term, the 26-year-old only played nine matches but he finished the season with a remarkably impressive pass success of 75.3%, something which would be brilliant for Smith’s passing style of play which he’s implemented.

Based on that number, he’d be fully equipped to help the Midlands outfit play from the back, something their previous targets can’t do as well.

Butland finished last season with an average rate of 56.6% whilst Heaton was even worse. He ended the campaign with a number of 46.2% which could severely hinder the team if they chose him instead.

If you consider this area of their respective games, Perin would undoubtedly be the better signing.

Liverpool fans discuss Philippe Coutinho’s £27m loan fee

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Philippe Coutinho’s £27m loan fee, which has been reported by Catalunya Radio (via The Daily Mail).

The story states that Barcelona have offered the Brazil international to Premier League clubs on a season-long loan deal for a sum of £27m, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal said to be in the running.

The Reds sold Coutinho back in 2018 for a sum of £142m, but things haven’t quite gone to plan for the former Inter Milan man at the Camp Nou.

He has scored just 21 goals in 76 appearances, and was booed by his own supporters last season – his future with the Spanish champions is certainly looking bleak.

The 27-year-old still possesses enough talent to make an impact on the big stage and fans of the Premier League will know all about what he can do after his time at Anfield, but a fee of £27m for just one season seems rather steep.

Let’s take a look at what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying about the news…

Crystal Palace fans want to sign Daniel Sturridge after deadline day disappointment

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have urged their club to sign free-agent Daniel Sturridge following their deadline day disappointment.

Coming into Thursday it looked as though the Eagles could sign a right-back and a striker to complete their summer business, with Kyle Walker-Peters, Fedor Chalov and Jean-Kevin Augustin among those heavily linked with a move to Selhurst Park.

However, manager Roy Hodgson confirmed 90 minutes prior to the window slamming shut that there would be no more incomings, and that Wilfried Zaha would be staying after he handed in a transfer request earlier this week.

The news left many Eagles supporters fuming – with some taking personal aim at sporting director Dougie Freedman and owner Steve Parish – as they now have Joel Ward and Martin Kelly fighting for the right-back spot, and Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham as their only out-and-out centre-forward options.

While Palace can no longer sign any players on loan or permanently until January, they can still bring in those who are currently unattached, including former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.

That is the name on the lips of many of the Selhurst Park faithful on Twitter as you can see below, and why not seeing as he has 77 Premier League goals in 218 top flight appearances to his name.
