Everton fighting Tottenham for Garner

Everton are reportedly fighting Tottenham Hotspur to sign James Garner, as Nottingham Forest pull out of the race for his signature.

The Lowdown: Impressed at Forest

Garner impressed a lot during his loan spell at Forest from Manchester United last season, and so it is not a surprise to see him linked with a move to a Premier League club.

Hailed for his ‘unbelievable’ set piece delivery by former Forest teammate Ryan Yates, Garner managed an impressive eight goals and ten assists in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt), helping Steve Cooper’s team win promotion up to the top flight.

The Latest: Everton in race

As per Football Insider, Forest are out of the running to sign Garner, following his successful loan spell at the City Ground.

It leaves just the Toffees and Spurs in the race for his signature, with United demanding between £14-15m to sell him before the transfer window closes.

The Verdict: Prioritise a striker

The Goodison Park outfit should be prioritising signing a striker first before they bring in another central midfielder in Garner.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They have already signed Amadou Onana from Lille, and look set to announce the capture of Idrissa Gueye from PSG, so while Garner created more chances than any Reds player last season, his signing should not be the first port of call.

They have still not brought a new striker in following the injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and so this must be their priority before recruiting anyone else.

Liverpool linked with £75m Valverde bid

Liverpool have been name-checked in connection with a mystery £75m bid for Real Madrid star Federico Valverde.

The Lowdown: Midfielder wanted

The Reds’ midfield crisis was clear to see during their 2-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester United on Monday night, with Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all currently sidelined.

Jurgen Klopp admitted before the game at Old Trafford that he would like to add another central player to his ranks before September 1, which has been further backed up by journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos.

The Anfield outfit have been linked with several players, including Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, but now a new name has entered the fold.

The Latest: Valverde’s secret admirer

According to Spanish publication El Debate (via The Mirror), it’s claimed that Liverpool are set to ‘move forward’ with a new midfield signing, with Valverde being the subject of a €90m (£75m) bid from an ‘unnamed’ Premier League club.

The outlet assumes that the team sending the offer is likely to be one of the ‘big six’, or Newcastle United, who now ‘could afford’ this price following their takeover.

It’s believed that the proposal has been ‘rejected’ by Real Madrid, who view their maestro as ‘untouchable’, with a ‘substantial fee’ required to be sold.

The Verdict: Too much money

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool are the club who have approached Valverde, but this deal is not one that they should consider pursuing.

The Uruguayan, dubbed ‘world class’ by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is undoubtedly a household name, but £75m is a huge sum of money to pay for a panic buy to cover injuries, and it’s not even guaranteed that he would be a starter when the out of action players do return.

It’s obvious that Klopp is a massive fan of Jude Bellingham, and any potential deal for him next year is likely to break the bank, so the Reds should hold off and find a cheaper short-term alternative.

Top 5 contenders for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022

The football season has just started again. And the recent Champions League draw has had fans on the edge of their seats. But the main football event of the year is just around the corner. The upcoming FIFA World Cup will be underway from November 20 to December 18, leaving supporters worldwide to prepare for an unusual winter tournament. So, who will emerge victorious in Qatar? We look at five teams that might make it to the top.

France

The French head into the competition as the defending champions. Coached by Didier Deschamps, who already led Les Bleus to victory in 2018, France appears ready to repeat the feat. However, no nation has claimed back-to-back titles at the World Cup since the Brazilian squad in 1958 and 62. Still, the French squad looks threatening enough to pull it off. While some of the 2018 champions have been out of form lately, such as midfielders Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté, the attacking line boasts two of the most prolific players at the moment. Thus, PSG star Kylian Mbappé will undoubtedly shine alongside Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema.

Argentina

Argentina has already won the World Cup twice in the past century. But a final triumph keeps eluding the Albiceleste for decades. The Argentinian team tasted victory again in 2021 with a narrow win over Brazil at the Copa America. In 2022, Messi and his co-stars beat Italy in the first-ever Finalissima. What’s more, the squad managed by Lionel Scalani hasn’t lost a single international game since 2019. So, could it be Argentina’s lucky year? With a blend of experienced players like Ángel Di Maria and young talents like Lisandro Martínez, the Albiceleste can aim for the title. And it would only be fitting for Lionel Messi to land, at last, the only prize yet missing in his trophy cabinet.

England

England came close to securing the European title in 2021. At the Russia World Cup in 2018, English fans buoyed their national squad all the way to the semi-finals. But the Three Lions failed to reach the top and end an ongoing trophy drought since their first and only World Cup win back in 1966. Still, the English national squad is up in arms to bring a 56-year wait to a much-anticipated close. On top of seasoned players such as Harry Kane and Kyle Walker, the Three Lions boast promising young talents like Phil Foden and Jack Grealish. And in a pool comprising Iran, Wales, and the United States, England should find a fairly straightforward way to the knock-out stages. So, has Gareth Southgate’s squad what it takes to bring it back home? English fans certainly hope so.

Brazil

Vinicius Jr., Neymar, Lucas Paquetá, Gabriel Jesus. The skills and creativity among the Brazilian squad are unparalleled. And the defending line-up is proving more solid than ever, with players such as Marquinhos and Thiago Silva gaining maturity over the years. Brazil is heading to Qatar in dazzling form as they haven’t lost a match since their Copa America final. Twenty years after their last triumph, the Seleção could knock a sixth World Cup title. And bookmakers have made it clear the Brazilian squad was one to watch out. So, from South America to Asia, punters can place their bets on the best football betting sites in 2022. Even in countries where gambling is illegal, such as Vietnam, football fans can find the perfect platform online. Experts have scoured the internet to single out the most favourable odds on a range of reputable betting sites. Better yet, newcomers and seasoned punters alike may claim hefty bonuses to keep their bankroll in the green.

Belgium

Keen football observers already knew of the tremendous potential of the Belgian squad. Still, Belgium appeared as the surprise team of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Bested by France in the semi-finals, and again during the 2021 League of Nations, Belgium is yet to secure any international title. But the Red Devils are looking to make history at the upcoming tournament. From Kevin De Bruyne to Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard, their golden generation is going strong, still. And while they slipped to second place in the world FIFA rankings, the Belgian squad could prove hard to beat, anyway.

Wolves blew chance to sign centre-back

Wolves reportedly missed out on the chance to sign Strasbourg centre-back Alexander Djiku, due to them turning their attention to failed target Craig Dawson.

The Lowdown: Centre-back shortage at Wolves

While Bruno Lage will be happy with his overall efforts in the summer transfer window, the centre of his defence does currently look light.

Granted, Nathan Collins has come in from Burnley, but Wolves have also seen former stalwarts Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Willy Boly all move on.

It looked as though Dawson was going to come in late in the window but it was a move that ultimately failed to materialise.

The Latest: Djiku could have been signed

According to L’Equipe [via Sport Witness], Wolves had the chance to sign Djiku from Strasbourg, only to focus on snapping up Dawson instead.

It is stated that Wanderers ‘did have the €6m requested’ to sign the 28-year-old  ‘but preferred to sign’ the West Ham man.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398117″]

The Verdict: Could be a big error

Djiku has been an impressive performer for Strasbourg in recent times, winning an average of three aerial duels per game in Ligue 1 so far this season.

[freshpress-poll id=“399044″]

It could be that he was a younger, superior target to Dawson, who not only then didn’t join Wolves but also scuppered their chances of signing the Ghanaian.

Hopefully, it won’t look like a big error over time – free agent Jason Denayer is being linked with a move, which could alleviate the issue – but there is every chance that it could be a big opportunity missed.

Celtic agree deal to sign Justin Osagie

Celtic have completed the signing of West Ham United youngster Justin Osagie, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

The Lowdown: Summer of negotiations

The defender joined the Irons following a spell with Southend United, and his performances in the youth ranks at the London Stadium clearly caught the eye.

The Hoops had been in advanced talks to sign the 17-year-old for the majority of the summer, and after weeks of negotiations, the talented prospect has now swapped the Premier League for the Scottish Premiership.

The Latest: Celtic complete Osagie deal

According to the Daily Record, Michael Nicholson and the Hoops hierarchy have now agreed a deal to sign Osagie ‘on a three-year contract’, and he will link up with their ‘B team squad’.

It’s stated that he will be playing in the ‘Lowland League under coaches Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus’.

The Verdict: Another star in the making?

Francis Turley recently put pen to paper in Glasgow from Glentoran, and Osagie is now following in his footsteps to be the next player to walk through the doors north of the border.

The ‘highly rated’ youngster, as dubbed by former BBC journalist Fraser Fletcher, has already been selected to represent the Republic of Ireland’s U19s, despite only making one appearance for the Hammers before making the switch.

Osagie will have no doubt been looking for a fresh challenge given his lack of game time in London and it’s great to see the Bhoys building for the future after losing a few youngsters of their own.

Ben Arfa a perfect fit for Howe’s Newcastle

Newcastle United are currently enjoying a solid start to the new season with five draws and one win from their opening seven league games, with manager Eddie Howe having impressively stabilised the club following his appointment last year.

After the turbulence and doom and gloom that surrounded his predecessor Steve Bruce’s stint in charge, the former Bournemouth boss – as well as a change of ownership – has renewed belief among both the club and its supporters, with the Magpies no longer merely looking over their shoulder.

For all the plaudits that the 44-year-old has been receiving of late – having been praised for the “top-class job” he has done by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola – there is still a long way to go before the newly-ambitious Tynesiders can truly begin to threaten at the top half of the table.

Despite having only recently signed Alexander Isak for a club-record fee to help bolster their attack, the northeast side still appear somewhat light on attacking options, with far too much responsibility still on the shoulders of the mercurial, Allan Saint-Maximin, who led the way last term for the club with ten goal contributions in all competitions.

The Frenchman had enjoyed a fine start to the season prior to his recent injury absence, with one goal and two assists from his opening four league games, with his average match rating thus far of 7.53, as per Sofascore, the highest among the Newcastle squad, as well as the eighth-best record in the Premier League.

The former Nice man offers a real potent threat down the left flank as a result of his devastating speed and sheer unrivalled trickery, with his innate quality in possession seeing him rank in the top 1% among those in his position across Europe’s top five leagues for dribbles completed.

The £36m-rated ace could well benefit from having another figure to also chip in creatively, however, with Miguel Almiron seemingly not a natural fit on the right flank, with a potential icon from the past in Hatem Ben Arfa one man that may well have been a possible solution in his prime.

Although it may appear something of a creative overload to have two maverick talents in the side in the form of the former France international and his compatriot Saint-Maximin, the latter man’s importance to Howe’s side would seemingly illustrate that the Magpies boss would also allow Ben Arfa to flourish.

The now-veteran playmaker had originally been signed by the St James’ Park outfit on an initial loan deal back in August 2010, with manager Chris Hughton bringing him to England from Ligue 1 side Marseille.

While the “majestic” fleet-footed star – as dubbed by journalist Liam Canning – was not able to remain consistent during his time at the club, for a brief time he was simply a true genius, notably registering 11 goal contributions in just 26 league games during the 2011/12 season.

The former Lyon man – who had been snapped up permanently by Alan Pardew in January 2011 – notably netted a stunning solo goal in a win over Bolton Wanderers in April 2012, picking the ball up from inside his own half before expertly weaving his way through the opposition.

With the club already having a figure such as Saint-Maximin who can produce such moments of quality, it would pure, joyful attacking carnage to also see Ben Arfa terrorising defences with his sheer brilliance, with it a mouthwatering thought as to having both men lining up on either wing.

Of course, the latter man’s time at the club ultimately ended in frustration as he struggled for form and fitness, before departing in 2015, although supporters would likely jump at the chance to have a peak version of the now-35-year-old back at Newcastle.

Leeds can bin James with Pulisic

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta added some extremely exciting attacking talent to Jesse Marsch’s first team squad over the summer transfer window, with the likes of Luis Sinisterra, Brenden Aaronson, Sonny Perkins and Wilfried Gnonto all sealing a move to Elland Road prior to the September 1 deadline.

The Spaniard also moved a number of the Whites’ current attacking options onto pastures new, with Raphinha joining Barcelona in a £55m move, Tyler Roberts joining Queens Park Rangers on a loan-to-buy deal and Daniel James – a £25m signing in the summer of 2021 – linking up with Fulham on a season-long loan.

And, with the director of football already said to be eyeing a €35m (£31.5m) move for Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic in the not too distant future per reports in Italy (via Leeds Live), James’ time at Elland Road could very well be up come the end of the season, with the USA international very much looking to be a like-for-like replacement for the 24-year-old.

This is an opinion Conor McGilligan clearly agrees with, with the YouTuber stating his belief in a recent video for the One Leeds Fan Channel that the Blues forward would indeed appear to be a direct replacement for the Wales international – before stating that James’ days in LS11 very much already appear to be numbered.

“The interesting part of this is it’s going to be fascinating to see why Leeds would be going in for Pulisic,” McGilligan said. “Is it a direct placement for Dan James? We know his days are numbered at Leeds United.”

And, considering just how poor the winger was for Leeds last time out, coupled with the undoubted ability that Pulisic possesses, it would appear an extremely wise move for Marsch to cut his losses on the Welshman, before replacing him with the former Borussia Dortmund starlet.

Indeed, over James’ 34 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, the £27m-rated forward endured a disappointing campaign, scoring just four goals – despite often being deployed at centre-forward – and missing eight big chances for the Whites.

These returns saw the £50k-per-week winger average a disastrous SofaScore match rating of just 6.64, ranking him as Marsch’s joint ninth-worst performer in the top flight of English football last time out.

For comparison, despite Pulisic featuring just 22 times – only 13 of which came as starts – in the Premier League last season, the £45m-rated forward scored six goals, registered two assists and created one big chance for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.3 shots, making 0.7 key passes and completing 1.1 dribbles per game.

These metrics saw the £150k-per-week talent – who is comfortable operating from attacking midfield, on either wing or even as a centre-forward – average a SofaScore match rating of 6.74 – a rating that would have seen the American rank as the Whites’ joint 12th-best player in the top flight last term.

Furthermore, with the 24-year-old also having the experience of winning the tournament back in 20/21 – this is yet another string to Pulisic’s bow that James lacks – with the Welshman having made just two appearances in the competition.

As such, it is clear to see that, should an opportunity arise for Marsch to cash in on James at some point this season, the Spaniard simply must do so, before reinvesting the funds received into signing the player who Hakim Ziyech dubbed “crazy” – as is it evident that Pulisic would represent a huge upgrade on Leeds’ £25m flop.

Manchester United: Harry Maguire suffers thigh muscle injury

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire looks set to be unavailable for selection this weekend against Manchester City due to a muscle injury.

The Lowdown: England display

Maguire began the campaign as first choice under Erik ten Hag, however, he fell out of favour after back-to-back opening league defeats against Brighton and Brentford and hasn’t started a Premier League fixture since.

The 29-year-old was backed by Gareth Southgate though and played every minute against Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League, conceding a penalty against the latter of the two countries.

Southgate and Maguire reportedly had a private chat at Wembley following a disappointing performance against Germany, and it looks as if things have gone from bad to worse for the centre-back.

The Latest: Thigh problem

The Sun shared a story on Tuesday evening regarding Maguire, claiming that he is set to be out of action for two weeks through injury.

The defender suffered a thigh muscle injury but played through the pain, however, that has resulted in the player being sidelined for the immediate future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates-7/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Not ideal

You’d expect that Maguire wouldn’t have started at the Etihad on Sunday anyway, however, knowing he is out through injury isn’t exactly good news for Ten Hag.

The Red Devils have a whopping nine fixtures in October so may need to call upon Maguire at some point to provide cover to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. However, it seems as if United won’t have their club captain fit for a while, starting this Sunday.

West Brom: Journalist drops Bruce claim

West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Bruce still has people ‘backing him’ despite calls for the sack, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: Bruce under pressure

The Baggies have made a disappointing start to the new Championship season having taken just ten points from 33, and now find themselves just one place above the relegation zone heading into the game against Preston North End.

As a result, the 61-year-old has come under increased pressure, with rumours circulating that he could be relieved of his duties at the Hawthorns should results not improve imminently.

The Latest: Nixon’s verdict

Asked during a Twitter Q&A whether he thought Bruce’s time in charge would come to an end should West Brom lose to the Lilywhites, Nixon responded:

“He’s made it through to another game … clearly has people still backing him …”

The Verdict: Right time to go

Bruce has undoubtedly been a top manager throughout his career, but surely now is the right time for the hierarchy to make a change before it’s too late.

The Corbridge-born coach has only won eight of his 30 matches in charge in the Midlands, having secured just one win in the last ten (Transfermarkt), which is a pretty worrying statistic to say the least.

West Brom are already being dragged into a relegation battle, so if the club want to turn things around and start battling it out at the opposite end of the table, they need to act fast before the season becomes no longer salvageable.

Predicted Aston Villa XI vs Chelsea

Aston Villa return to Premier League action on Sunday as they face Chelsea at Villa Park, with Steven Gerrard still under pressure after a poor start to the season.

While the Villans are now unbeaten in their last four top-flight games, they have endured disappointing draws against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest in their previous two outings.

Gerrard’s side will have to be much better if they are going to take anything from Sunday’s game against Chelsea, who are unbeaten since Graham Potter arrived as their new manager.

Here is how Football FanCast expects Gerrard to line his side up on Sunday, with two changes from the team that started against Forest.

Emiliano Martinez looks unlikely to lose his place in between the sticks after a strong start to the season which sees him ranked as their second-best performer according to WhoScored.

With Lucas Digne still injured, Ashley Young will continue at left-back, with Matty Cash on the opposite flank, while Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa will maintain their partnership in the middle.

There is one change in midfield, as Leander Dendoncker making his first start after his summer switch from Wolves, in the hope that the Belgian can provide some steel in the middle of the park against tougher opposition, with John McGinn dropping out in what is a refresh to the central areas.

He is joined in midfield by Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz, fresh from the Brazilian signing a contract extension in midweek.

Finally, in attack, the “magical” Philippe Coutinho – as dubbed by Roberto Firmino – drops to the bench after another game without a goal or assist, with Cameron Archer finally getting his chance to start up front. The forward has 17 goals in 36 outings for the U21s and deserves an opportunity to showcase himself.

[freshpress-quiz id=“659225”]

The youngster will be flanked by Ollie Watkins and Emi Buendia, in the hope that Villa can finally find their attacking rhythm, in what promises to be a tough game against Chelsea this weekend.
