Bowlers dominate opening day

Round-up of the first day of the fifth round of Division One of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Nov-2010Eighteen wickets fell on the first day of the contest between Islamabad and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. In conditions that proved a gift for fast bowlers, the batting line-ups of both teams crumbled but SNGPL performed marginally better to take an important 45-run lead with two wickets still in hand. The fast-bowling pair of Asad Ali (6 for 50) and Imran Ali (4 for 22) ran through the Islamabad line-up, sharing all ten wickets, and skittled out Islamabad for 97 in just under 29 overs. In their reply, SNGPL struggled to measure up to the medium pace of Fakhar Hussain, who bagged four wickets. But useful contributions from opener Yasir Arafat (39), Usman Arshad (32) and an unbeaten 32 from Khurram Shehzad guided SNGPL to 142 for 8 at stumps. On a day where only 219 runs were scored, extras made up for 39 of them.Kamran Akmal helped end the first day of the contest between National Bank of Pakistan and Faisalabad in Sargodha on even terms. His unbeaten 135 helped NBP recover from trouble at 26 for 3, and he was helped by opener Rashid Riaz who contributed 77. The pair added 138 for the fourth wicket and Akmal, who batted fluently, consuming just 204 balls in his innings thus far, is left with the responsibility of ensuring his team gains control of the game from 276 for 6 at stumps. Part-time offspinner Hasan Mahmood picked up three wickets.Pakistan International Airlines recovered to 224 for 4 at stumps on the opening day against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Shoaib Malik, the former Pakistan captain, notched up a century and added 167 with captain Kamran Sajid for the fourth wicket after Sialkot had been reduced to 53 for 3 at one stage. Malik’s was an attacking innings, laced with 16 fours and a six; his 102 came off just 117 balls. Sajid was unbeaten on 72 and his presence at the crease will be crucial if PIA are to build a more substantial score.Karachi Blues capitulated against the pace bowling of Naved-ul-Hasan and Nawaz Sardar as Water and Power Development Authority took control at the National Stadium in Karachi. Only opener Naved Khan offered any significant resistance, fighting it out for 42 off 127 balls, while the rest, for the bulk, came and went. Naved-ul-Hasan, opening the bowling, grabbed 4 for 66 but it was Sardar’s performance that stood out, as he caused early damage as well as ran through the tail. He picked up 4 for 5 in 7.5 overs, a spell that also piled on the pressure with four maidens. Karachi could only manage 128, and an unbeaten half-century from opener Rafatullah Mohmand set the foundation for a significant lead for WAPDA, who finished the day on 116 for 1.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited took control of their game against Multan at the end of the opening day at the Multan Cricket Stadium. Half-centuries from opener Zohaib Khan, who fell just three short of three figures, captain Imran Nazir, and allrounder Abdul Razzaq steered ZTBL to 325. Multan, for their part, did well with the ball, as seamer Abdur Rauf and Mazhar Bashir, with his offspin in his maiden first-class game, picked up four wickets each to keep ZTBL down to a score that would have meant things were pretty much even at the end of the innings. However, the game turned in ZTBL’s favour when left-arm seamer Mohammad Khalil picked up two wickets in Multan’s reply to leave them at stumps at 19 for 2.A collective batting effort from Rawalpindi helped them reach 334 for 5 on the first day against Habib Bank Limited at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The effort centered around useful partnerships between the top and the middle orders. Naved Malik dominated an opening stand of 56 and added a further 73 with captain Babar Naeem, who top scored with 80. There was a slight wobble when three wickets fell for 46, but Muzammil Nizam, with an unbeaten 49, and wicketkeeper Jamal Anwar helped revive the innings with a still ongoing 71-run stand. Seamer Kamran Hussain took three wickets for HBL.

Arsenal eye Everton striker Calvert-Lewin

Everton reportedly now risk losing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Arsenal in the summer.

The Lowdown: Injury misery

Calvert-Lewin has endured an injury-plagued season, playing just 14 times in total over all competitions.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

In turn, the Goodison Park faithful have struggled massively, lurking just outside of the relegation zone.

There is no doubting his ability and how vital is to the team, after all, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘one of the best’ in his position ahead of the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Latest: Arsenal lurking

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist and transfer expert David Ornstein has revealed that Calvert-Lewin is now among the options considered by Arsenal to strengthen their attack this summer.

However, the Gunners are also considering signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

The Verdict: Keep

Yes, Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries this term, but he has already shown his worth to the Toffees and remains one of their key players.

The striker has 56 goals in total for the club over six consecutive campaigns, while also contributing a handy 17 assists (Transfermarkt).

At 25 years of age, the England international still has his best years ahead of him, and so Frank Lampard’s side will not want to let him go cheaply, especially to another club in the Premier League.

However, if they were to get relegated, they may not have a choice.

Everton: Myers reacts to penalty shout

Everton were denied a penalty in the Merseyside derby yesterday against Liverpool at Anfield, according to Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers.

He replied to a tweet from Everton player Anthony Gordon after the game, which was a video of the incident, saying “All day long, penalty!”. Many are likely to agree with him and believe that it was harsh not to give the decision in favour of the Toffees.

Liverpool ended up claiming a 2-0 victory with goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi, but it wasn’t made easy for them with Everton battling it out in a heated game that was still all square at half time.

The decision will leave Everton supporters fuming as the opportunity could have brought them back into the game at a time when they are desperate for the points. Frank Lampard’s men sit in the relegation zone and are in a huge battle for survival.

These days it’s never a game of football, let alone a local derby, without a controversial decision. With the addition of VAR technology, officials have no excuse not to be getting the big calls right. The challenge on Gordon yesterday was quickly dismissed by referee Stuart Attwell, and despite being in the box, the tackle wasn’t even reviewed by VAR.

Even The Professional Game Match Officials Board said they would have had “no complaints” if the penalty was awarded to Everton with manager Lampard stating that it was “a clear foul” but that “you don’t get them here.”

It raises the question once again as to whether the size of a club and its home crowd have any influence on the decisions that officials make? Gordon was booked for diving earlier on in the game before the penalty denial so did that play a part in Attwell’s decision too?

Former Toffees striker Kevin Campbell seems to think so, saying that the referee “bottled it” and that the decision was there to be made but he didn’t make it.

In games as big as the Merseyside derby, when there is a lot riding on the result for both sides, the referee is going to take a lot longer to think about the decisions he makes which allows doubt to creep in. The point of VAR is to prevent this and to assist the official on the field with the aid of replays and footage from different angles.

We certainly think that the technology should have been used a lot more in the game and if it was it would have produced a much fairer outcome for both sides. Last season VAR awarded 29 penalties and so has proven to be used successfully when it comes to these decisions, however, yesterday wasn’t one of those.

World Cup or bust, says Jacob Oram

Jacob Oram has said that participating in the 2011 World Cup is motivating him to continue his injury-ridden career but failure to make the squad for the tournament could prompt him to retire

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Dec-2010Jacob Oram, the New Zealand allrounder, has said that the hope of participating in the 2011 World Cup is motivating him to continue his injury-ridden career but failure to make the squad for the tournament could prompt him to retire. Oram is presently recovering from a knee surgery he had in September.”I remember talking to Shane Bond prior to his retirement, when he had that abdominal strain, and he told me that, for him, that was the one injury too many,” Oram told the . “I think I’m at that point and in that mindset right now.”I’m very highly motivated to go to the World Cup and if it wasn’t on I may have already hung the boots up by now. It’s a very big carrot for me and it may also be the swan song of my career. If that’s to be the case, I’d like to give it everything to try and make it.”Oram’s career has been interrupted by injuries to his knee, back, calf and Achilles tendon. In August, he suffered a recurrence of a patella-tendon injury during the tri-series in Sri Lanka and had surgery for it on September 2. He will not be fully fit in time for New Zealand’s Twenty20 matches against Pakistan before the year ends though he hoped to ease back into action around Christmas for Central Districts during the HRV Cup, New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

Southee's five help New Zealand end losing streak

The youngsters shone for New Zealand as they defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the first Twenty20 at Eden Park

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTim Southee’s hat-trick is the second by a New Zealand bowler and the third overall in T20s•Getty ImagesThe youngsters shone for New Zealand as they defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the first Twenty20 at Eden Park. Tim Southee ripped the heart out of the Pakistan line-up with a brutal spell of five for 18 in four overs, and Martin Guptill’s fearless half-century ensured the chase went smoothly for the hosts. The visitors had rocketed to 58 for 1 in 5.5 overs before Southee struck five times in nine deliveries to derail the middle order, using his height and pace to torment the batsmen on the quick, hard surface, and throwing in the odd slower ball to keep them guessing. Guptill then attacked the Pakistan bowling with style and chutzpah, to get his team off to a rapid start, and continued to attack throughout his innings, despite the fall of wickets at the other end.Guptill began with gusto as he flayed Abdul Razzaq for 15 in his first over with two commanding strikes and a tickle down to fine leg, before hoisting Shoaib Akhtar for a giant six over square-leg. The pace of the Auckland pitch showed up three balls later as Jesse Ryder’s thick edge off Shoaib flew at shoulder height to slip, almost at the edge of the circle. Guptill continued to make merry despite the loss, hitting Shoaib for another six on the leg-side before the bowler struck again, this time to remove debutant Dean Brownlie for five.Scott Styris uppercut his second ball for six, but was undone soon after by Shoaib, attempting an ugly slog across the line to an indipper that pegged back leg stump. Shoiab had another, and the aeroplane was on show for the third time in three overs, but although there were breakthroughs, Guptill’s fireworks at the other end boosted the score to 55 in five overs. The Pakistan spinners provided some respite, but Guptill motored to his maiden Twenty20 fifty in 23 deliveries, hitting Wahab Riaz for consecutive boundaries and lofting Mohammad Hafeez over long-on. The dazzling knock came to an end when he was run out attempting an ill-advised single on 53, after having pushed the Pakistan fielders to the limit with swift singles during his stay.Ross Taylor was content to cruise alongside James Franklin while the spinners operated, with his side well ahead of the required rate. Hafeez picked up his second wicket when he hurried one onto Franklin, but with 29 runs to get in more than five overs, the victory was all but secured. A couple of trademark slog sweeps later, New Zealand were within striking distance, and Peter McGlashan finished the job for the hosts with 2.5 overs to spare. The Pakistan innings too was off to a rollicking start, thanks to some aggressive intent from the Pakistan openers. Shahid Afridi, having promoted himself to the top, wasted little time unfurling his signature slogs, while Hafeez also swung away with abandon to propel Pakistan to 36 in 3.5 overs, before the wickets began to tumble.Afridi was caught at mid-on by a backpedalling Ross Taylor, after New Zealand’s other debutant, Adam Milne, had shelled a chance off the previous delivery. Pakistan kept the foot on the pedal as they raced to 50 in five overs. Southee then came on to cripple the innings with pace, movement and bounce to leave Pakistan reeling at 68 for 6. Southee’s barrage included a hat-trick – New Zealand’s second in Twenty20 internationals, and third overall – which accounted for Younis Khan, Hafeez and Umar Akmal, who was wrongly given out lbw.Umar Gul and Riaz were on hand for Pakistan, scoring invaluable thirties as the tail pushed Pakistan towards respectability with some sensible batting and a flurry of late boundaries. Southee’s spell, however, had done the damage, and 143 proved too few to defend on a ground with a hard surface and short straight boundaries.

Celtic: Postecoglou must unleash Liam Shaw

Celtic saw a lot of players come in and out of Parkhead during last summer’s transfer window.

One big departure which took place in the summer was Scott Brown’s exit from the club after 14 years with the Hoops.

During that time, the midfielder racked up a total of 611 appearances for the Bhoys across all competitions. Over those 14 years, the veteran scored 46 goals and provided 63 assists along the way.

Given the impact that he had at the club both on and off the pitch, along with the trophies he won there, it’s safe to say that his exit was a big moment for the Hoops.

In addition to seeing numerous players leaving the club last summer, the Bhoys also brought in a raft of new signings.

One player in particular who was signed last year and could potentially fill the massive shoes of Brown since his departure is Liam Shaw.

Shaw could be Brown 2.0

Signed from Sheffield Wednesday in February 2021, the midfielder made the move to Parkhead in the summer.

After making just two appearances for the Hoops earlier in the campaign, the 21-year-old joined fellow Premiership side Motherwell in January on loan until the end of the season.

Upon Shaw’s arrival at Fir Park, the Well’s assistant manager Keith Lasley said: “Liam’s in training with us and he has been for a few days now. He looks a good athlete and he looks technically good.”

Since then, the former Wednesday starlet has gone on to make five league appearances for his current club.

Labelled by journalist Dale Johnson as a player who “could turn out to be the real deal”, Shaw has made nine tackles in total for Motherwell, showing the defensive capabilities he has despite not being a regular figure in the team.

Next season could be the ideal time for Ange Postecoglou to finally give the young midfielder a proper chance to shine and play regularly in the league for Celtic after getting his first taste of Premiership football in the current campaign.

While it may take him some time to reach his full potential, the club may well find themselves with an ideal long-term replacement for Brown, along with saving millions in potential future transfer fees.

Man United face Laimer transfer blow

Manchester United could be faced with a big transfer blow as Erik ten Hag prepares to rejuvenate the squad following a terrible season.

What’s the word?

That’s according to transfer Guru Fabrizio Romano, who tweeted that Bayern Munich are preparing a bid of around £20m for RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer.

He said: “Julian Nagelsmann is pushing to sign Laimer – as Premier League top clubs are interested too. He’s out of contract in 2023.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

Julen Nagelsmann is pushing to sign the player ahead of next season and this is a major blow to Manchester United, who seem to be falling behind other clubs in their pursuit of the highly-rated talent.

Transfer blow for ten Hag

Man United are set to target a new midfielder, with constant rumours of Paul Pogba leaving the club on the expiration of his contract in the summer gathering pace.

This would leave a gaping hole in the middle of the Red Devils’ midfield and Laimer could be a cut-price addition to the squad which would give ten Hag funds to splash the cash on other problem areas.

The Austrian has scored four goals and provided a further four assists in 25 Bundesliga matches this season, which is three more strikes than Pogba during the campaign.

In addition to scoring more goals than the Frenchman, Laimer offers a more solid set of defensive stats too, making almost double the number of tackles (39 to 20), fewer fouls (42 to 45), and more blocks (27 to 16).

Granted the France international can be one of the finest players on the planet when in form, but it has never materialised at Old Trafford during his disappointing six-year stint and it looks like it’s time to part ways.

The Austrian, judging by the stats, could be a perfect replacement if Pogba does leave the club. If the price being quoted by Romano is true, then United should grab the opportunity before Bayern Munich, or it would be a big disappointment.

Hutton reacts to latest Paul Pogba news

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has claimed that personal reasons could have been the deciding factor behind Manchester United star Paul Pogba snubbing a move to rivals Man City this summer.

The Lowdown: Pogba available for transfer

The Frenchman first joined the Red Devils in a world-record £89m move from Juventus six years ago, where he has since gone on to make 233 appearances for the club during that time.

The 29-year-old’s current contract with United is set to expire at the end of the season, making him a free agent to any potential suitors interested in securing his services, and as a result of this, has been linked with multiple clubs in recent weeks, one of those being Pep Guardiola’s side.

As reported by The Athletic journalist David Ornstein earlier this week, the Sky Blues are thought to have made a proposal for Pogba which the player did seriously consider, but he has since informed City that he will be moving elsewhere.

The Latest: Manchester rivalry a deciding factor

Hutton has admitted that it didn’t come as any shock to him to see United’s Premier League competitors show interest in the maestro, but suggested that the famous rivalry between the two sides may have put the 91-cap international off a potential move to the Etihad. He told Football Insider’s Russell Edge:

“It doesn’t surprise me they’ve thrown their hat into the ring.

“There’s no doubting his talent. I think on a personal level, for him to make that move, thinking of his lifestyle moving forward, how difficult that would be for them, just in general life.

“That’s probably the sticking point because the wages and that wouldn’t be a problem.

“He has had a hard time at Manchester United. Then to go to their rivals across the city, I think, would be very difficult for him.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if you see him go to PSG or somebody like that. That kind of makes more sense, I think, for him and his family.”

The Verdict: Ten Hag’s squad rebuild

Pogba, although beloved by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has missed out on the last five games under Ralf Rangnick having sustained a calf injury in the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool back in April, and it’s fair to say that United have missed his creativity in the middle of the park during his spell on the sidelines.

Prior to being ruled out of action, the £49.5m-rated midfielder was averaging 1.6 shots and 1.2 key passes per 90 minutes in the top-flight, not to mention that he has provided nine assists throughout the current campaign, via WhoScored.

With the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag imminent, the Dutchman will no doubt be busy filtering through his squad to decide who has a long-term future at the club and who will be let go, and it looks like Pogba will be just one of many names set to depart Old Trafford ahead of the start of next season.

In other news… United are said to have initiated contact with a club regarding one of their summer transfer targets.

South Africa take series despite Yusuf blitz

Yusuf Pathan launched the sort of assault that has made him a rich man to ensure it wasn’t all one-way in Centurion but it wasn’t enough to prevent South Africa from snatching the series with a 33-run victory

The Bulletin by Siddarth Ravindran23-Jan-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Yusuf Pathan smashed eight sixes in his 105•AFPYusuf Pathan launched the sort of assault that has made him a rich man to ensure it wasn’t all one-way traffic in Centurion but it wasn’t enough to prevent South Africa from snatching the series with a 33-run victory. After a tough tour over the past month-and-a-half, the last day of the series seemed set to be an anti-climactic non-scrap courtesy yet another Hashim Amla century and a slew of reckless strokes from the Indians.Yusuf, though, blasted a century of utter violence when all looked lost at 119 for 8, and after an hour of Yusuf, the South African bowling was looking clueless and India were 49 short, dreaming of a miraculous win. Yusuf clubbed a 68-ball century but holed out soon after, much to the relief of the Sunday crowd at Supersport Park. The tour had begun with South Africa’s crushing Test victory in Centurion and ends with another defeat for the visitors at the same venue. One reason India’s bowlers will be thrilled to be heading back home will be that there will be less sparring with Amla, who has plundered more than 1100 runs in the past 11 months against India in Tests and one-dayers. He collected another 116 on Sunday to push South Africa to a tall total in a rain-hit match.MS Dhoni had chosen to bowl on winning the toss, perhaps swayed by Supersport Park’s reputation of being a ground where it is easy to chase in day games. No matter what the past record, it is unlikely any team can win when its top order combusts so spectacularly and heedlessly as India’s did. Barring Virat Kohli, the rest of the top six were dismissed not by unplayable deliveries but by attempts at extravagant strokes.Rohit Sharma’s horror series ended as he was bowled by Lonwabo Tsotsobe going for a loose drive through the line; Dhoni’s imperious cut ended as an edge to first slip; Yuvraj Singh edged two boundaries to third man before giving catching practice to JP Duminy at point; Suresh Raina smashed a couple of fours before an upper cut sailed to third man; Parthiv Patel was the only one in the top order to inspire confidence, middling nearly every ball for the second innings in a row before falling to a debatable diving catch by Faf du Plessis at cover. India were 74 for 6 in the 14th over, and their only hope of saving the series seemed to be if the ominous clouds circling the stadium brought a massive downpour which washed away the match before the 20th over.Enter Yusuf. He fell over reverse-sweeping Robin Peterson for a six early in his innings, but the wickets kept tumbling at the other end. With Zaheer Khan adopting a blithe step-away-and-swing approach, the end seemed minutes away, but he knuckled down after some initial scares and kept turning the strike over to Yusuf.Indian fans would have nursed little hopes even when intermittent bursts of hitting took Yusuf to 66 off 58, and India climbed to 175 for 8 in the 33rd over. All that changed as Yusuf pounded four sixes and three fours in the next three overs to reach his century – so quickly that few realised he had reached the milestone till he raised his bat. That frenzy, through which Yusuf remained completely calm, ended with a 21-run over from Tsotsobe that brought the required-rate below five. Yusuf skied another attempted blast down the ground soon after, which du Plessis clasped to settle South African nerves.Yusuf’s ton was in absolute contrast to Amla’s in the morning, when the South African chose patience over pyrotechnics to coolly compile his runs – he reached his half-century on the back of 30 consecutive singles. After Graeme Smith’s troubles against Zaheer Khan continued, Amla let No. 3 Morne van Wyk be the aggressor. van Wyk grew in confidence as his innings progressed, unleashing a series of powerful cuts whenever he was given width, and even pulled off an audacious lap-shot off Munaf Patel for four.India went in with only two quick bowlers, and their armada of spinners didn’t pose too many questions to the South African batsmen. South Africa glided to 113 for 1 before Yuvraj plucked a spectacular caught-and-bowled to send back van Wyk, and had AB de Villiers stumped with a sharply turning delivery.Amla and Duminy, the home side’s two form batsmen this series, both had lives – Duminy surviving a close lbw shout and Amla dropped at square leg – and revived South Africa with a 102-run stand. The standout shot in Amla’s innings was the dab to third man, perfectly timing the ball as he opened the face to pick up several boundaries, one of which brought up his century. In the four overs that remained after an 80-minute stoppage, South Africa lost their heads and plenty of wickets as panicky running, smart bowling and attempted slogging combined to result in a collapse of 6 for 24. Amla played only two deliveries in those last four overs. India went in to lunch on a high, but there was little joy for them after the break barring Yusuf’s heroics, and their dreams of a maiden series win in South Africa were shattered.

Former wicketkeeper KS Indrajitsinhji dies

KS Indrajitsinhji, the former India wicketkeeper who also played for Delhi and Saurashtra, has died at the age of 73

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Mar-2011KS Indrajitsinhji, the former India wicketkeeper who also played for Delhi and Saurashtra, has died at the age of 73. He was a nephew of Duleepsinhji’s and a grand-nephew of Ranji’s, and a cousin of the late Hanumant Singh, the former India batsman and ICC match referee. His death, in Mumbai on Saturday, followed a struggle with cancer.A competent wicketkeeper and a sound right-hand batsman, who could open or go in the middle order, Indrajitsinhji’s career coincided with those of Farokh Engineer and Budhi Kunderan, and his appearances for India were limited to when either of those was missing. His break came against Australia in 1964-65, when he played in all three Tests and helped Chandu Borde put on 32 runs for the unbroken ninth-wicket partnership to help India clinch a memorable two-wicket victory in Bombay. An injury to Engineer brought him back for one more Test – against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1969-70.He achieved greater success in the Ranji Trophy while playing for both Delhi and Saurashtra. He was one of the first wicketkeepers to complete 100 dismissals in the tournament and in 1960-61 claimed 23 victims, then the record. In a first-class career that stretched almost 20 years, Indrajitsinhji scored 3694 runs (26.76) with five centuries and had 210 dismissals, 133 of them caught.Paying tribute to him in , Yajurvindra Singh said “Inder” helped in the emergence of several Saurashtra players playing in Mumbai, including Karsan Ghavri. “Inder had an astute cricketing mind and knew the history of the game rather well,” he said.
